Galileo’s Look Into Space
Planetary Fun Facts! One day on Mars is 24 hours and 37 minutes almost the same length as an Earth day!
Galileo Galilei
was born on February 15, 1564 in Pisa, Italy, and he died January 8, 1642 in Tuscany, Italy. In 1609, Galileo heard about Holland’s invention of the telescope, and decided to build his own with improvments. He was able to see planets, discovered the four large moons around Jupiter, the phases of Venus, and also that the moon was not smooth, but has craters. “Philosophy is written in this grand book, the universe, which stands continually open to our gaze. But the book cannot be understood unless one first learns to comprehend the language and read the letter in which it is composed.” -Galileo Galilei Page 4
Because it is tipped on its axis, Uranus has seasons that last 20 years. 20 years of summer doesn’t sound too bad, right?
Jupiter is so big, all the planets in our solar system can fit inside it!

More DIY Telescope Planetary Fun Facts! In 2006, Pluto was reclassified as a dwarf planet because the Interntional Astronomical Union, or IAU, changed the definition of a planet.
The surface of Venus is full of many craters and very active volcanoes, often described as a “stormy desert.”

- 2 paper towel tubes - scissors (PARENTS ONLY) - masking tape - paint (choose your favorite colors!) - 2 conex lenses (you can get these from pair of magnifying glasses or order them online.
1. Paint your paper towel rolls and let them dry. 2. Create the inner tube of the telescope. Using scissors, cut one tube lengthwise on one side. Curl one side of the cut edge slightly over the other. Then tape the cut edge down.
Neptune was named after the Roman God of the Sea because of its blue ocean-like color.
3. Insert your inner tube into the second paper towel tube. It should fit snuggly into the second tube but still be able to slide in and out. If not, adjust the size of the inner tube. 4. Tape one of the convex lenses to the outer edge of each tube, only around the rim so you don’t cover too much of the lens. 5. Hold the telescope with the inner tube facing your eye. Aim it at an object in the night sky. (Never use a telescope to look at the sun.) You can focus by sliding the inner tube in and out. Page 9
