A Wet Sheet and a Flowing Sea For Voice & Piano Quintet Robert Singer January 2019
A note to the ensemble To the singer: A sense of natural ow is more important than getting the rhythms absolutely precise, so please feel free to use your intuition as to what feels naturally right for each passage. To the pianist: Particularly from bar 40 onwards a sense of ow is more important than absolute rhythmic precision. To the strings: The piece makes particular use of autando. Directions such as ‘Warm’ or ‘Slightly Colder’ further explore the possibilities of this technique. If a particular section requires a departure from the desired tone in order to achieve the written note length, please feel free to do what is most practical. String techniques in each section Section A makes much use of autando Sections B to D are focused more on harmonics Section G uses the normal bowing technique to achieve most volume.
A Wet Sheet and a Flowing Sea A Wet sheet and a owing sea, A wind that follows fast And lls the white and rustling sail And bends the gallant mast; And bends the gallant mast, my boys, While like the eagle free - Away the good ship ies, and leaves Old England on the lee. "O for a soft and gentle wind!" I heard a fair one cry: But give to me the snoring breeze And white waves heaving high; And white waves heaving high, my lads, The good ship tight and free - The world of waters is our home, And merry men are we. There's tempest in yon hornèd moon, And lightning in yon cloud: But hark the music, mariners! The wind is piping loud; The wind is piping loud, my boys, The lightning ashes free - While the hollow oak our palace is, Our heritage the sea.
