Balancing life-enhancing ornamentation with modern design principles were key in creating a relevant and restorative environment for visitors. Reflecting the changes on the exterior, this new public space and spa takes into consideration all aspects of wellbeing. Similar to the city itself, this public interior does not fit into one clear category or definition. It is open to adaptation and transformation, reflecting the culture of Seattle. The concept of adaptable familiarity plays a role in the design by responding to Seattle’s consistently changing nature while celebrating the constants, just as in nature itself.

APPENDIX
Abstract This design will contribute to the surrounding environment and culture of Seattle in the midst of constant change. With biophilia and the healing effect as drivers of the design, how can this public interior mimic nature without over-exaggerating it? How will the space impart comfort and familiarity while adapting the expectations for a public building? What are some methods for blending the natural landscape into the interior environment in an effort to connect users to nature while indoors? These questions will inform the concept of this Seattle project while also serving as a basis for design decisions. The Seattle Central Waterfront is undergoing major changes in favor of creating more accessible experiences and supporting sustainability. The City of Seattle is currently working to rebuild the central waterfront between now and 2024. As urbanization increases, people are seeking out new ways of regenerating and maintaining personal wellness in these urban environments. Inhabitants of Seattle often strive for more sustainable ways of living, enjoy active lifestyles, and spend lots of time in nature. Sustainability, accessibility, and connection to nature become all the more important as population density rises in Seattle. Applying visual and non-visual biophilic elements to the design will aid in this essential connection. Balancing life-enhancing ornamentation with modern design principles will be key in creating a relevant and restorative environment for visitors. Reflecting the changes on the exterior, this new spa and public space will take into consideration all aspects of wellbeing. This public interior will offer a cafÊ with health/environment conscious options, counseling services, fitness spaces, pool area, meditation areas, massage zones, and an adaptable large public space. Although the overall space is public, the ability to have privacy is another human need that will be acknowledged within the design. Similar to the city itself, this public interior will not fit into one clear category or definition. It will be open to adaptation and transformation, reflecting the culture of Seattle. The concept of adaptable familiarity will play a role in the design by responding to Seattle’s consistently changing nature while celebrating the constants, just as in nature itself. Seattle’s progressive and active essence will feed directly into the space and vice versa, ultimately supporting the purpose of this wellness hub.
