Similar to the city itself, this public interior does not fit into one clear category or definition. It is open to adaptation and transformation, reflecting the culture of Seattle. The concept of adaptable familiarity plays a role in the design by responding to Seattle’s consistently changing nature while celebrating the constants, just as in nature itself.
Balancing life-enhancing ornamentation with modern design principles were key in creating a relevant and restorative environment for visitors. Reflecting the changes on the exterior, this new public space and spa takes into consideration all aspects of wellbeing.
As urbanization increases, people are seeking new ways of regenerating and maintaining personal wellness in urban environments. Inhabitants of Seattle often strive for more sustainable ways of living, enjoy active lifestyles, and spend lots of time in nature. Sustainability, accessibility, and connection to nature become all the more important as population density rises in Seattle. Visual and non-visual biophilic elements in the design reinforce this essential connection.

The Unknown There’s nothing safe about the unknown Yet calming still A feeling so familiar yet foreign It draws you in Begging to be explored The cold turns into warm The light dances with dark Uncertain and unsure No illusions of grandeur It all felt so real And imagined Content in the chaos At peace with the storms original poem
Celebrating the unknown, the Elsewhere project explores the affects associated with intrigue and exploration. 31 students were surveyed on how the space made them feel while engaging with the design through a 360 experience. The most common responses were energized, interested and playful. The least common responses to the space were vulnerable, protected, and comforted. 50% of the students surveyed found the space to be stressful, while only 9% found it to be calming. 80% of those surveyed described the space as exploratory.

light fixture design
05. Egmont luminaire spring 2018 | programs used: AutoCAD, SketchUp
The Egmont Luminaire initially drew inspiration from Composition IX by Wassily Kandinsky. A principal kit of parts was derived from the elements found within Kandinsky’s piece and eventually led to a refined kit of parts that drove the design. In the preliminary phases of the design process, it was evident that Frank Lloyd Wright’s work had an indirect influence on the design of the luminaire.
The name Egmont comes from a musical piece by Beethoven, one of Frank Lloyd Wright’s favorite composers. Successful designs and musical compositions evoke feelings from those who come into contact with them. Music and design share several similarities, and the relationship between music and design is represented by the Egmont Luminaire.
Using SketchUp, AutoCAD, and hand drawings, the design was carefully planned and executed. The fixture was constructed primarily using laser cut MDF board, paint, and glue. The Egmont Luminaire was created by utilizing a variety of techniques and skills, further emphasizing the importance of all design methods.
