THE EDGE TORPOINT, CORNWALL Our client wanted to create a “James Bond-style” modernist home with a seamless connection to the Tamar Estuary, a place that is both their livelihood and playground. We worked with the natural topography, to create an infill home that rests comfortably on edge of this scenic tidal estuary. Conceived as a series of stepped forms that cascade towards the water’s edge, forming a series of external areas to be enjoyed by the family. Internally, the house is designed to provide a series of spaces that work together seamlessly over 3 levels to define the functions of living - Sleep, Live, Work and Play. These levels are all connected by a helical staircase, which acts as a focal point for the architecture both inside and out. All the living, sleeping, and entertainment spaces are orientated towards the river, whereby the more private and functional spaces are deliberately hidden, utilising the natural topography to create private areas within a semi-basement, including a cinema room & bar. A corner window extends the vista in the main living area to take in the rolling greenery of Thanckes Park, but importantly it allows a discreet view towards the rear of the client’s mother’s home, allowing interaction and creating a vital sense of connection. Harmony in architecture is a result of reciprocity with the site and its environment. This home cleverly negotiates its site and engenders a relationship with the Tamar Estuary that profoundly enhances the lives of the family it nurtures.

ROODSCROFT PLYMOUTH This distinctive home will rest in landscaped gardens overlooking the beautiful Tamar Valley. An area of outstanding natural beauty. We were commissioned to undertake the design of a high-end replacement home, located on the site of an existing bungalow. Using the same footprint and careful orientation, combined with crystal clear balconies and expansive windows, it maximises the opportunity for the owner to enjoy the spectacular views. The plot is located on just shy of an acre of picturesque surroundings. Utilising modern yet sympathetic materials, this project will sit comfortably in the landscape adding a visually striking intervention. The scheme integrates a large heated outdoor swimming pool and a sizable outdoor living space. In a new era of staycations, this is a consideration which has become of increasing importance to our clients. This space includes, among other features, a changing area and pool room, providing a self-contained area to relax, gather and entertain as well as a hidden basement with cinema room, games room, wine cellar and garage.

PEIRSON HOUSE A PA R T M E N T S PLYMOUTH Succeeding a former post-war nursing home, Peirson House injects a new lease of life into a previously tired site on Notte Street. Peirson House is a new residential development of contemporary apartments located in the heart of Plymouth. The development consists of 76 apartments, a mixture of one and two beds. The building contains a communal entrance hall, accommodating dual lifts that lead to a selection of design led apartments. All of the apartments benefit from balcony or terrace views. There is a south facing landscaped communal amenity deck for all residents to enjoy. Using locally distinctive materials such as Plymouth limestone, the architecture is bold and contemporary, yet sympathetic to its built environment. Located within the Plymouth Hoe Conservation Area, this contemporary development benefits from being within close proximity of all local amenities, and Plymouth’s iconic waterfront is just minutes away. Being one of the first centrally located apartment blocks in Plymouth, this development responds directly to the Council’s aspiration to bring vitality to the City Centre.

Q U E E N S T R E E T A PA R T M E N T S CHATHAM, KENT As part of the Medway Council’s aspiration for city status by 2035, this project in Chatham pioneers an innovative approach to rejuvenating neglected brownfield sites. The proposals are for the construction of 229 apartments disposed in four strikingly designed blocks. At street level there will be an entrance podium, carefully modulated in form and landscape to provide an exciting new addition to The Brook. Within this ground floor there will be resident leisure facilities including a pool, gym and meeting areas. Between the blocks are carefully designed courtyards as additional amenity space for the residents, elevated from the road and providing an oasis of calm. These spaces are further complimented by roof gardens with their panoramic views in quiet, sunlit seclusion. This innovative project has taken many years to evolve. The design has been developed to respond to the rich historic context of Chatham. This is evident in the detailing and choice of materials throughout, which reflect the maritime heritage and predominance of brick. The scheme not only maintains 100 public parking spaces, but improves the security, quality and functionality for the 21st Century. Spaces and infrastructure will be provided for electric vehicles and the new development will actively promote more sustainable forms of transport.

Green roofs and gardens will attenuate rainwater run-off assisting the existing sewerage system. The envelope will be heavily insulated to produce a ‘fabric first’ low energy development. Solar panels on the roof will assist the running cost of the swimming pool, whilst heat extracted in cooling the fitness gym will also contribute to the heating of the pool hall. The apartments will be heated via a central district heating power plant in each apartment block with heat exchangers in each apartment. This provides an efficient and energy saving system.

WAT E R LO O ST R E E T

WAT E R L O O S T R E E T BIRMINGHAM

Located in the centre of Birmingham a few minutes away from New Street Station, this Grade II seven-storey listed building had previously been used for offices and a bank hall on the lower floors. However, this Art Deco style building had been unoccupied for a few years when we were appointed by the client. One of our main priorities was to keep the character of the building and enhance its particular architecture. For this reason, all the communal areas were designed to remain in its original Art Deco style, the finishes were retained where possible, and for all the other elements that had to be constructed, we paid special attention to making them sympathetic with the existing building. For the apartments, on the other hand, we followed the opposite approach. We designed these to be more contemporary and tried to achieve all the comforts for the future users of the building. Our intention was for the building to have a unique feel for its future users, so each of the apartments was designed as an individual space. The building was thermally and acoustically upgraded to make it more sustainable.

THE NEST CAFE BARNES, LONDON A popular plant-infused Bohemian Café in South-West London. With sustainability and community at the core of the business ethos, our vision was to create a space with the feel of a luscious green terrarium, which nurtures its visitors, The owners wanted to create a sense of place, an extension of your home and a cosy environment to cultivate relationships and creativity. With this in mind, we created a fusion of contrasting textures, using rustic natural palettes, using upcycled furniture, and rich colours to add depth and intrigue. They approached us to do what we do best, create spaces where people choose to spend their free time. Creating an enticing environment that taps into prevailing values and offers an inimitable atmosphere is essential to securing a loyal customer base. Café, Bar and Restaurant interiors need to work practically and aesthetically, maximising the efficient use of space, while enhancing the wellbeing of both clientele and staff.

THE MAQAM CENTRE LONDON

We were appointed by the Yusef Islam Foundation to complete the renovations and conversion of a former Catholic church to provide a multi-faith centre to the community of Brent, North London. The foundation developed a concept to bring groups from different faiths together in a single building, which would foster community relationships and shared experiences. This exciting project was designed internally to provide an indoor swimming pool, health spa, a large multi-use performance hall, exhibition space, community facilities and a café. Internally, the design ethos was developed in close collaboration with various community groups and stakeholders to provide a series of spaces that allowed for a welcoming and peaceful environment. Natural materials used both internally and externally brought cohesion to the architecture and facilitated a sense of relaxation and harmony. Whilst maintaining the architectural integrity of the existing structure, BRL designed a series of external interventions to breathe new life into the former church, which had been vacant for a number of years.

B R AY W I C K L E I S U R E CENTRE WINDSOR AND MAIDENHEAD CONTRACT VALUE £35m Braywick Leisure Centre is sited at the heart of the town’s largest public open space, which covers 40 hectares. It is already the main outdoor sporting hub and the new centre perfectly compliments its location. What sets this design apart from a more conventional leisure centre is its relationship with the parkland setting. From the outset, the intention has been to create a route through the building to feed into the existing network of paths and activities. It is above all a community centre and the new destination offers opportunities for families to indulge their individual interests and enjoy varied experiences in one place together. Key to the design development was the close integration with the parkland setting. The building was positioned to accommodate three very high landscape value trees. The car parking is interspersed with lines of trees and the perimeter landscaping buffer has been retained to soften the impact of this significant development. The building is also unusual in that both of the main facades are given equal weight, so that there is no front or back. Great care has been taken in both the form and legibility of the building layout. The wet and the dry facilities are simply disposed either side of the central top lit street. The choice of materials also reflects its surroundings with natural products, such as the timber boarding and trusses.

34

B R AYWI C K L E I S U R E C E N T R E

Also fundamental to the design is the environmental performance, and the simple shape and sweeping form directly derive from this. Leisure centre pools are highly serviced buildings, as they need to create a warm, humid environment throughout the year. The distinctive roof form of the pool is to reduce volume, whilst containing 200 spectator seats for the numerous galas. This is a special location and the scheme has been developed in consultation with a dedicated and passionate community. As with all facilities, good design encourages participation, but it is ultimately people who will make it a success.

SIDCUP LEISURE CENTRE LONDON CONTRACT VALUE £13m Sidcup Leisure Centre was won in a competition bid alongside the Leisure Operator, Parkwood Leisure. The Leisure Centre is located in a parkland setting close to the Town Centre facilities of Sidcup. BRL Architects received an award for this project as the Best Sustainable Building in the whole of the Greater London area. The building’s sustainable features include solar/electricity panels, heat recovery system, and grey water recycling. Following planning permission, the project was procured on a Design and Build basis with BRL novated across to the Main Contractor. The unashamedly contemporary design acts as a ‘pavilion in the park’. The extensive full height glazing to the front entrance is shielded from overheating by an external steel frame with louvres inserted into the frame to create a ‘Brise soleil’. This architectural feature of the building with its light structure reduces the perceived bulk and massing of the building behind in this sensitive parkland setting. The curved frontage of the building is reflected in curved terracotta clad elements to the side of the building. This further softens the impact on the parkland setting.
