The beginning of our new European cinema strand which will look at different influential cinematic movements in European cinema.

ITALIAN NEOREALISM

This course will explore the new ways of making cinema that were introduced by Italian Neorealism: moving film sets from the artificial lights of studios to the daylight of street corners, professional actors and ordinary people filmed together, and light-hearted comedies were replaced by films with challenging themes. The course shows how the writers (Cesare Zavattini) and directors (De Sica, Rossellini) of Italian Neorealism presented to the audience reality rather than fiction, and changed the way in which Italian cinema was conceived.

TALK CINEMA

SERENA FORMICA Monday nights 6.30pm 5 weeks commencing 1 March £35/ £25

HELEN GASCOYNE Tuesday evenings 6.30pm 10 weeks commencing 12 January £60/£40

In the late 1950s a group of French film critics writing for the influential journal Cahier Du Cinema decided to take on the cinematic adventure. In the space of a little more than a decade, Truffaut, Godard, Rivette and Chabrol, among others, directed a series of films that is seared into the history of European cinema. The course examines some of the more significant films of the period, from Godard’s A Bout de Souffle to Truffaut’s The 400 Blows, and - briefly - explores the connections between the French New Wave, Hollywood, and Italian Neorealism.

Back by popular demand, this course is for the Cinephile who would like to dig a bit deeper and talk about the films they see at Broadway with like-minded individuals. The course will consist of bi-weekly films from the Broadway programme followed by in-depth discussions and illustrative analysis the week after.

Dr Serena Formica teaches film and television studies at the University of Derby and previously taught the Hitchcock course at Broadway

ALAN SEAMAN Wednesday Afternoons 2pm 10 weeks commencing 13 January £70/ £50

Helen Gascoyne conducted our hugely popular ‘Into film’ courses and more recently ‘What a Carry On’.

TEN MORE GREAT HOLLYWOOD DIRECTORS!

Last year’s Great Hollywood Directors course just wasn’t enough to cover the Classical Hollywood period! There wasn’t room for the likes of Nicholas Ray, Ernst Lubitsch, Anthony Mann, William Wyler, Douglas Sirk and (in case you haven’t done the maths) five more... We’ll look at their careers with ample illustrations and time for discussion.

Sunday 17 January 1-4pm £10

Saturday 20 February 1-4pm £10

This course will critically engage with key examples of film, television programs, and digital media texts aimed at children. It will consider the consequences of the changing ways in which adults have conceptualised children and examine how media texts created for children over the past century have articulated debates about the nature of childhood. Children have been seen as a particularly vulnerable part of the mass audience and debates about children’s media have much to tell us about regimes of censorship, ideologies of media “influence,” the educational potential of the media and the role of marketing in media culture.

Two different cultures pulling together for the defence of democracy and post-War recovery, is how it looks in the pages of history, but the two countries observed through cinema may tell an alternative story and another side to the old country and the emerging superpower. Classic cinema arose in a decade of surprising decline in attendance. The reasons, as well as the content of film production show both the contrast and similarity of national identity. The course will contain extracts from the decade, featuring both the creators and personalities of the movies.

This popular course returns, led by filmmaker Steven Sheil, teaching a hands-on approach to directing drama for camera. Whether you are an aspiring or developing filmmaker, this course requires no previous experience.

This ever-popular course is aimed at beginner level and will teach you the following important areas of screenwriting: • Premise, outline and film treatment: what they are and what they’re for. • Story structure: structuring a story from beginning to end. • Visual writing: making the movie roll in your head and how to develop characters that you and your audience will believe in.

A beginners guide to different stopframe animation techniques, following the process from creating basic artwork or models, through capturing images, and animating them on a computer. No experience or artistic ability requiredjust an enthusiasm for the medium!

If you’ve ever wondered how to make use of your home computer to create, record and produce music, then this course shows you how. Focusing on Mac-based software and hardware, you’ll be shown everything you need to know - from connecting your instruments and choosing a microphone, through typical software, to creating backing tracks and producing a finished recording.

AMERICAN STARS GARRATH CHURM Thursday Afternoons 2pm 5 Weeks commencing 25 February £35/£25 This course will span from the 1930s through to the 1970s and, week by week, one male and one female star synonymous with each decade will be chosen, illustrating changes in stardom as well as the films of the era under discussion. Emphasis will be on lesserknown films and those stars whose work was more valued at the time reflecting the range of audience and popularity.

Alan Seaman is a film lecturer and stand up comedian. This is a follow-up, though not exclusively, to his popular Ten Famous Hollywood Directors course.
