Simon Pegg and Nick Frost (Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead) reunite for the comedy adventure Paul as two sci-fi geeks whose pilgrimage takes them to America’s UFO heartland. While there, they accidentally meet an alien who brings them on an insane road trip that alters their universe forever...
In his Oscar-nominated No End in Sight, Charles Ferguson described how the American government botched the military victory in Iraq by having no plan for the peace. Now, he demonstrates with remarkable clarity how American ineptitude and carelessness - this time in the unchecked deregulation and speculation on Wall Street - has corrupted the entire world economy. Matt Damon narrates this tour through a tangled forest of derivatives, credit default swaps and subprime mortgages, revealing exactly why the meltdowns of Lehman Brothers and Merrill Lynch were no accident.

Black Swan takes a thrilling and at times terrifying journey through the psyche of a young ballerina whose starring role as the duplicitous swan queen turns out to be a part for which she becomes frighteningly perfect. With stunning visuals and masterful performances, Black Swan combines a rare mix of beauty and grotesquerie to shape a remarkable narrative.
Set in 1970s Glasgow, this film tells the story of a shy and intelligent young boy who, through a series of circumstances, turns into a NED - a non-educated delinquent. Attending a new school, he becomes increasingly violent and aggressive, all the while searching for a way out. Peter Mullan’s NEDS functions as a kind of companion piece to his earlier The Magdalene Sisters, sharing the same focus: the unsentimental education of teenagers who expect a better future and Mullan once again proves that his skills as a director match those as an actor.

Though this English boarding school may seem perfect, a cruel reality lies just beneath the surface. As Ruth, Kathy and Tommy discover their roles in a nightmarish, totalitarian experiment, they together seek escape from the trap that, since birth, was set for them. Never Let Me Go combines Alex Garland’s terse adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro’s celebrated novel, Rachel Portman’s disquieting score and Adam Kimmel’s beautifully subdued camera work. Even as this potent, haunting film hits its sci-fi marks, Romanek elevates it above genre into an exploration of first love, scientific folly and mortality.

GRAHAM GREENE AND THE CINEMA:
TRUE GRIT
What could a remake of an old John Wayne western have to offer? Two words: Coen Brothers. In their fresh take on the 1968 novel that inspired the earlier film, newcomer Hailee Steinfeld stars as a 14-year-old girl who enlists an alcoholic U.S. marshal (Jeff Bridges) to help her avenge her father’s murder. Matt Damon and Josh Brolin also star.
This riveting drama, which won a World Cinema Grand Jury Prize at this year’s Sundance, sees 17 year-old Josh drawn into the orbit of his hard-core criminal family when his protective mother dies. As the police close in on his three near-psychotic uncles following a spate of armed robberies and murders, Josh finds himself conflicted by family loyalties and pressure from a detective, while coping with a gut-wrenching impulse to see justice prevail and to survive. An outstanding, unflinching achievement from feature debut writer/director David Michôd, and comparisons have already been drawn with a certain Martin Scorsese. Bath Film Festival

Javier Bardem leads Iñárritu’s first allSpanish-language project since Amores Perros as Uxbal, whose life is at turns seedy, desperate and caring. With two young kids in tow and a mentally ill, estranged wife to contend with, his is an existence defined by a need to eke out a living any way possible. When he’s told he has mere months to live, his whole world changes...
The screen adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play by David LindsayAbaire, “Rabbit Hole,” directed by John Cameron Mitchell is about a husband and wife who fight to save their marriage after the deepest form of loss. The film is a vivid, honest and unexpectedly funny portrait of a family searching for what remains possible in the most impossible of situations.

Ben Mendelsohn

Graham Greene’s chilling novel provides the inspiration for Rowan Joffe’s debut feature. Brighton, 1964. Ambitious young gangster Pinkie Brown is determined to stop other gangs taking over his patch, but when he kills a rival, vital evidence falls into the innocent hands of a young waitress, Rose. Pinkie seduces Rose to stop her talking, but her employer takes a close interest in the case. A year before the abolition of the death penalty, can Pinkie trust Rose not to betray him and can Rose trust Pinkie not to make her his next victim?

Starring: Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon,
Starring: Javier Bardem, Hanaa Bouchaib,

Pinkie seduces Rose to stop her talking, but her employer takes a close interest in the case. A year before the abolition of the death penalty, can Pinkie trust Rose not to betray him and can Rose trust Pinkie not to make her his next victim?

Ben Mendelsohn

MADE IN DAGENHAM (15) Dir: Nigel Cole United Kingdom 2010 112m
In 1968, women machinists at Ford’s Dagenham plant downed tools in protest against sexual discrimination. With humour, common sense and courage, they took on their corporate paymasters, an increasingly belligerent local community and finally the government itself. Led by Sally Hawkins, the wonderful cast brings an historic moment to life with much humour and great heart.
