WE ASKED OUR AUTHORS, WHAT MADE YOU A THEATRE PERSON?

I became a theatre person when the national tours of Rent and Cats toured through The Shubert Theatre in my hometown of New Haven, CT. I was blown away. I had sang in church all my life and danced recreationally, but never saw the arts as a viable career. I thought that Broadway was a distant intangible dream, but little did I know it would become the heartbeat of my life. Theatre is much more than what happens on the stage. It’s the collaboration, the exchange of joy with a live audience, and the magic of creating a family from what was once a group of strangers. I don’t know who I’d be if I hadn’t found it.

The power and urgency of the writing along with the brilliant creativity that rendered it left me speechless and in need of a walk to collect myself. It was the first time a musical had left me so broken; so affected; and yet, so exhilarated by the possibilities of the form. I thought to myself, “that’s what I want to do.”

Universal Performers is a student-run group that thrives on the dedication and ingenuity of its passionate members . After the drama program and most choir classes were cut at their STEM-focused school, Mission San Jose’s student artists found a way to continue making theatre . Despite having no funding or teacher oversight, Universal Performers still produces full-length productions with outdoor rehearsals, thrifted costumes, tarp backdrops, flashlights, and garden lamps. Universal Performers’ work also allows the student body to see people of color and queer stories represented on stage LICENSING IN THE COMMUNITY

Standing Ovation Grant 2022

WINNERS: MISSION SAN JOSE UNIVERSAL PERFORMERS In 2022, Broadway Licensing recognized an exceptional educational theater program that supported our massive transformative purpose to “Make Everyone a Theatre Person” with a $5,000 grant. Congratulations to our recipient, Mission San Jose Universal Performers!

STANDING OVATION GRANT 31

“We are located in the heart of East LA, an area deeply impacted by high crime rates (74% higher than the national average), low graduation rates (5% college), and one of the worst infection rates of COVID-19 in the nation during the peak of the pandemic. Our program seeks to offer equitable and affordable access to high quality musical theatre education, experience and performance opportunities in a supportive environment for students who lack safe and egalitarian access to arts instruction.”

BONNABEL HIGH SCHOOL / BRUIN THEATRE

DESERT OASIS HIGH SCHOOL / DIAMONDBACK DRAMATICS

“We consider our program to be a part of a renaissance of the current times, and as such, we are challenging long-held beliefs and norms in the industry and making changes in the name of equity, diversity, and inclusion. Our most recent production of ‘The Three Musketeers’ was completely gender-flipped—all female roles were played male, and male roles female.”

RUNNERS UP: Additional congratulations to our four runners-up, who also received $1,000 for their efforts in making everyone a theatre person.

“Unfortunately, late September 2021, Hurricane Ida completely destroyed our theatre space that we had been building, improving, and renovating for thirteen years. We weren’t allowed to move into the our empty theatre space until December but when we did, my students and I worked hard to find any means to build a set and install stage lighting and produce a one night performance of ‘Almost, Maine’.”

EASTBROOK HIGH SCHOOL / PANTHER THEATER “In a recent survey of our high school seniors, we found that more than 70% of our students were involved in theatre in some way. Our art classes create set pieces and props. Different clubs sell concessions at our shows. Our building structures students create our significant builds, putting their set construction skills into real-life projects. And our favorite event is “Popup Theater,” when we create hallway chaos by singing show tunes during school passing periods.”

WHAT MADE YOU A THEATRE PERSON?

Theatre, for me, began as truth-telling around my fami ly’s kitchen table, it was a drunken confession at my grandmother’s Thanksgiving dinner, and a world opened up while sitting on a stoop in Brooklyn just before nightfall. Theatre, for me, remains a space where my heart is given room to expand and contract, and experience the unexpected.

Lynn Nottage Ruined, Sweat, Intimate Apparel, Clyde’s

WE ASKED OUR AUTHORS, 50 BROADWAY LICENSING | www.broadwaylicensing.com

For a sad while, we couldn’t gather in theaters to see plays. So we watched a lot of stuff on our phones and tablets and TVs. And then, one fine day, we were able to gather again. And some theaters reopened. And I went to my first play in eighteen months—and I realized how sick of screens I was. Because screens are barriers. When you go to the theater— there’s no barrier between audience and play. Plays can be seen and heard, just like filmed content. But—unlike filmed content—plays can also be touched and tasted and smelled. And they can be interrupted—by the audience. People can walk out of a play. They can boo and cheer—and the actors will hear them. They can rush the stage in protest. All because there’s no barrier. That’s dangerous. I think that’s why I’m a theatre person. It’s dangerous.

John Cariani Almost, Maine, Love/Sick

In a word: community. I always got a lot of joy from performing, and from seeing my work performed, but the real thing that makes me a “theatre person” is the feeling of shared purpose and community that is such a part of every theatre group. Maybe it’s because theatre is great at creating empathy, but I’ve always found that theatre people were always among the kindest, most fascinating, most outgoing people I’ve ever met. I made so many friends doing shows, and I feel like just about everyone out there doing a show could be my friend.

Don Zolidis The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon, Game of Tiaras, 10 Ways to Survive the Zombie Apocalypse

Acting first made me a theatre person. I remember doing school plays all throughout elementary, middle, and high school and realizing the full power of wielding emotion and language to not just tell the story but share time, heart, and perspective. It was never about the prizes or awards (though I was proud of our little high school winning state one year!). It was always about the congregation our plays created between an audience and the artists on and offstage.
