constructions as well as suspended ceilings, unlike some competitor fire rated downlights and covers that can have limited applications. Peter E Jackman IEng MIFire EFBEng AIWSc, Technical Director of International Fire Consultants Ltd. - widely acknowledged as a leading independent expert in fire engineering - says:
“Building Regulations 2000 Approved Document P allocates full responsibility to the electrician to make good the fire performance of any fire-rated floor/ceiling/wall after carrying out an electrical installation and legal action can be taken for non-compliance. Many, so called fire rated downlight fittings/covers are only tested in a small number of ceiling constructions and consequently this leaves the electrician vulnerable to “legal action” if the solution that he uses is wrong for the installation”

How to Use this Selection Guide 1. All covers are equally suitable for mains or low voltage fittings using “cool beam dichroic or aluminium reflector lamps. It is only necessary to know the cut-out size and the height of the fitting. 2. Select the cut-out size of the fitting in the left hand column. 3. Read across to the right hand column that contains the height of the fitting concerned. Always select the exact height, or move up to the next size. For example: a cover for a fitting with a 98mm cut-out and a height of 95mm is required. In the left hand column you will see that the nearest cut-out size is 100mm; reading across the right hand columns, you will note that the AFF109/150 is not suitable, the 83mm size shown for the AFF109/200 is too small and the 136mm shown for the AFF109/250 is too large. You should select the larger size, AFF109/250. PLEASE NOTE: IF YOUR FITTING SIZE IS SHOWN IN THE ORANGE SHADED AREA, THE COVER CAN ONLY BE INSTALLED FROM ABOVE THE CEILING. THE COVER WILL NOT FIT THROUGH THE CUT-OUT HOLE.

Furthermore, the sleeve material is compressible to 50% of its original thickness, as there is no rigid outer casing it can accept some inaccuracy in the cut penetration, allowing it to be fitted into tight gaps. The specially formulated foil backing on the outside of the sleeves is designed to transmit the heat
Material The Firecap intumescent sleeves are made from a blend of mineral fibres and exfoliated graphite to produce a material structure that combines high grade fire stopping characteristics with excellent acoustic and thermal insulation properties. The foil backing is designed to create a perfect vapour seal between the conduit/duct and helps to reduce any condensation coming into contact with the wall/floor. The sleeves contain no uPVC compounds, only small amounts of organic binders, resulting in minimal smoke emissions in a fire situation. All Firecap materials are exonerated from classification according to HSE Guidelines.

Intumescent Duct Wrap Intumescent Duct Wrap Designed for use with plastic ducting where it passes through brick or blockwork. Intumescent duct wrap has been designed to fit around the outside of the ducting, sealing the gap made between the ducting and the wall. When subjected to heat, the duct wrap expands inwards to crush the ducting, thus sealing it totally and preventing fire spreading via the ducting to adjoining areas.
● For use with small uPVC rectangular ducting in
solid walls ● Easy to install - simply wraps around the duct
and is held in place by a self adhesive strip ● Manufactured from flexible fully intumescent
material encapsulated in a thin polythene sleeve to allow easy handling and installation ● Maintenance free ● Fibres used are exonerated from classification
according to HSE guidelines ● Moisture, humidity and frost resistant ● Smallest dimension less than 54mm use one
wrap, if greater than 54mm use two wraps ● Tested and approved by Chiltern International
Fire to BS 476: Pt.20 & Pt.22. (Fire test assessment No. Chilt/F04007. Duration of effective protection 132 minutes insulation and integrity)
