C-BUS

WHAT IS C-Bus C-Bus is an intelligent Cat 5 Low Voltage (elv) Bus system used to control lighting and other electrical services. All items are connected and communicate via the Cat 5 cable network. These items are - inputs, typically devices that send commands such as PIR's, timers, key switches, and - outputs , typically stand alone or DIN mounted relays and dimmers. To ensure fast and reliable operation, each device has its own in-built microprocessor and "intelligence" which can be individually programmed and re-programmed. Each C Bus network can be up to 1000m long ,wired in any configuration. Up to 100 devices can operate on each network and up to 255 networks can be connected on the one system. Whether simple ON/OFF control of a lighting circuit via a relay , or variable control such as dimming hf ballasts or transformers, C-Bus is used to easily control virtually any type of electrical load via these progammable outputs. C-Bus communication is 2-way so each unit can communicate directly with any other unit on the network, and provide information about it's own status. C-Bus system information is held within individual C-Bus units rather than at one central point. This ensures optimum communications speed and improves reliability Simple software for Windows(tm) 95/98 or NT is used to commission the system from a laptop or PC via the PC interface device. When this is disconnected the system will function until changes may be required. More sophisticated software and system gateways are available to run larger projects with more specialised requirements. These communicate with BMS systems or other networks for complete integration of building networks.

www.clipsal.co.uk

Ideally suited for both Home and Commercial projects such as Retail, Warehousing, Office, Public Authority and Sports venues, C-Bus is now installed in ten's of thousands of locations worldwide. In summary, C-Bus is undoubtedly the most cost-effective, easy to install and user-friendly control system available.

OVERVIEW OF THE C-Bus CONTROL SYSTEM Introduction In this section we can only touch upon some of the most common C-Bus features. For full details and advice on applications please request a full copy of the C-Bus documentation from your Clipsal Area Manager. In addition please visit the Clipsal Integrated Systems website at www.clipsal.com/cis where the latest product information is available including software downloads. The C-Bus Network The C-Bus Network Bus is the communications wiring for the system, consisting of an unshielded twisted pair (UTP) 'Cat 5' cable. The Network Bus not only provides the means of communication between units, but also the small amount of power needed to operate the circuitry within most C-Bus units. The C-Bus Network is electrically isolated from the mains power, and operates at safe extra low voltage levels (36 volts DC). The normal restrictions of mains wiring usually do not apply, so C-Bus wiring may be run into places that would be dangerous (or illegal) with normal mains wiring. Free Topology Structure Input and Output devices are wired to any point in the C-Bus Network by the Cat 5 bus cable, which carries all communications between the Units. The C-Bus connections may be looped from unit to unit, or a branch can be made at any point. This 'free topology' structure provides a flexible system layout. New units can be added anywhere, at any time, without system reconfiguration. Easy To Design and Install For data communications only a C-Bus cable connection to the network is required for each device . Mains voltage is supplied from appropriate output devices such as relays and dimmers directly to the load device - light fittings for example. During commissioning, the system is programmed so that specific commands trigger responses in one (or more) devices on the C-Bus Network.

At any time the commands may be reprogrammed, and C-Bus units can also be added, moved or removed freely. Unlimited Capabilities Unlike other systems, C-Bus allows multiple commands to be sent and received simultaneously at a high speed (3500 bits/sec), and 2-way communications allow devices to communicate directly between themselves. The size of a C-Bus installation is practically unlimited. A large installation is usually divided into sub-networks of maximum 100 C-Bus devices, with a total cable length of 1000m per subnetwork. This allows a C-Bus system to be divided into manageable sections, simplifying design, limiting potential fault propagation and aiding in any troubleshooting. Distributed Intelligence Unlike a number of other systems, C-Bus has distributed intelligence, with each module comprising of a microprocessor with non-volatile memory and operating program. This means that coding and control information is downloaded and held in individual C-Bus units, rather than all information kept on a central processing unit. This allows all Units on the C-Bus Network to operate independently with "distributed intelligence''. The distributed intelligence provides extremely reliable high-speed communications, and ensures that a malfunction in one unit will not affect the operation of any other Unit or the Network. Peer-To-Peer Communication Every C-Bus Unit is assigned a unique name, so that all the devices on the C-

There is no direct mains voltage connection between any of the C-Bus units, the only connection is via the low voltage Cat 5 C-Bus Network cable. Bus Network can communicate directly. Since C-Bus uses 'peer to peer' communication, every device onto the CBus Network issues and responds to commands directly from the Network, rather than requiring a central computer or controller. Simple Control Each C-Bus device is programmed to issue and respond to certain commands. The number of commands programmable into the C-Bus system is virtually unlimited. Generally, Input Devices are programmed to issue commands, and Output Devices programmed to execute those commands. When a command is issued by a C-Bus device, any device programmed to

Active Feedback to the Network Due to the C-Bus 2-way communications and distributed intelligence, Output Devices also send information back to the Network about their current status, which allows error-checking and active feedback. Multiple Events Single C-Bus Devices can produce multiple events. For example, you may program an Input Switch so that the length of time the key is presseddetermines what Command is issued - a short press issues an on/off command and a long press controls a dimming command.

Logic and Scenarios More sophisticated commands can also be made using higher level software. For example conditional ( IF - THEN ELSE ) statements can be programmed into the C-Bus system allowing events to be conditional upon the status of other devices, time of day, and other situations.

C-BUS

respond to that command will be activated, where ever they are situated on the C-Bus Network.

For example, an Input Switch could issue an instruction to a certain Relay Device to switch "ON" - but only if it was after 12:00 noon, and the ambient light was under 150 Lux. New developments Latest C Bus products to be released

Single devices may control a number of Output Devices - for example a single push button switch may control a whole floor of a building. Multiple Input devices may also control a single Output Device. PROJECT EXAMPLE

Within the boardroom of a large building, an Input Switch is pressed, issuing a Command onto the C-Bus Network. Each C-Bus command is uniquely named - in this case we have programmed the command as "Boardroom wall lights - toggle On and Off". The command from the Input Switch is sent onto the CBus Network, for every C-Bus unit throughout the building to read. However, only the C-Bus Units programmed to respond to that specific C-Bus message will react to the Command.

To provide further flexibility, comfort and energy savings, a C-Bus occupancy detector is added to also control the same lights A in the boardroom. We could then set-up up the system such that there is a logical relationship between the operation of the switch and the detector.

Bus IR remote controller). The occupancy sensor takes care of automatically switching the lights off when the room is unoccupied. The LED indicator on the Input Switch has been programmed to illuminate if the Wall lights are switched "ON", irrespective of whether that command was originally issued by the Input Switch or any other device on the Network (e.g.: the PIR Sensor). As well more sophisticated features can be added with additional software. For example, we have programmed the CBus system so that if the time is after 5:30pm, and if there is nobody detected by the PIR, then to turn the lights off automatically. As a safeguard we have also instructed the relay to flash the lights twice before switching them off completely. The original Input Switch now functions as an Over-ride Button, so if the lights flash (indicating an imminent full switch off) a quick press of the button will provide an extra period with the lights on. Another Input Switch in a different section of the building has been programmed as a "Master Switch" to turn "OFF" all lights in any area that are "ON", irrespective of commands issued by other control devices. Remember there does not need to be a direct wiring connection between any of these units. This simple example only gives an overview of control flexibility of the C-Bus system.. C-Bus can be programmed to suit any project's requirements. The system can then be re-configured at any time in the future without wiring modifications.

www.clipsal.co.uk

A 12 channel DIN mounted relay supplies the boardroom. The first Relay supplies the wall lights in the boardroom and is set to respond to the Command ""Boardroom wall lights - toggle On and Off" The Relay receives that specific C-Bus command, and toggles. In this case, the Input Switch simply operates as a push-button control for the Relay.

For example, if the occupancy sensor is On, the Input switch could be set to disable the sensor and toggle the lighting Off when pressed (i.e., 'Presentation Mode'). The lighting could manually be switched back On again from the wall switch (or via a C-

include the new Pro series Dimmers. These sophisticated dimmers are compact and stylish, with unique features. With in-built C Bus power supply they can also operate as standalone dimmers powering up to 3 other C Bus devices - scene setting switches for example. The new Scene Master is another example of the latest generation C Bus developments -it can control 5 scenes from 33 groups, with a learning mode that enables scenes to be set without the use of the standard software. It also allows manual over-ride of main groups via controls on the front of the panel and comes complete with a credit card sized IR remote device. New software Two new products developed for larger installations keep C Bus at the forefront of control in Intelligent buildings C-Gate/C-Bus Server Software C-Gate is a gateway program which allows third parties to integrate with the C-Bus system. Interfaces can be constructed to BacNet, LonWorks, EIB or more. The C-Gate Software package is a framework (server and support applications) for anyone who wants to develop C-Bus compatible application software and/or interfaces to other building management systems. C-Gate provides a portable server application, which makes it simple for experienced software developers to create C-Bus compatible software without a detailed knowledge of C-Bus protocol. C Gate basically, consists of a run-time package that includes the server, support applications and documentation (including example code). It is a software platform that monitors and controls the components of the Clipsal CBus system. The server is written in JAVA with a strong emphasis on portability to maximise its use on both Windows(tm) and non-Windows(tm) platforms such as Unix(tm), Mac OS(tm) and Linux(tm).

www.clipsal.co.uk

The C-Gate software supports TCP/IP connections, meaning that C-Bus can be controlled over the local Intranet or Internet.

In the UK such well known users include Marks and Spencer, TAGMclaren, Imperial War Museum, Millennium Stadium,Kodak

ware application which provides the complete solution for real time control and monitoring of C-Bus using clear and concise graphic images. The user can create sophisticated animation to display the operating status and performance of the electrical services in the premises. A history log ensures that specified parameters and events are logged with historical and real time trending available in graphical form. C-Lution can be used to produce periodic and event driven reports. C-Lution can be used to monitor, control and log all alarms. The integrity of the installation may be tested by CLution. An alarm can be programmed to alert the user if a C-Bus device is removed or added to the system. The user can also programme a multilayered security system that allows personal access to the areas of a building's electrical services within their control. The C-Lution package includes a driver library to interface with proprietary equipment such as Building Management Systems (BMS), Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), Remote Terminal Units (RTU), etc. Over 130 protocols are available upon request. C-Lution may be seamlessly integrated into 'existing' Clipsal C-Bus networks to give a total building Supervisory, Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) solution.
