ttoxeters’ 2009 Mayfest was successfully staged on Bank Holiday Monday. Despite the rain, cold and blustery wind a significant crowd gathered in the market place for 4 hours of entertainment. After a short parade led by the May Queen and an enormous Green Man, the procession arrived at the Market Place where the energetic and well drilled Picknalls Dance Group provided traditional May folk dances and a Maypole dance - the first in Uttoxeter market since the 50’s, to organisers’ knowledge. Next up Tamsin Denny eloquently recited two traditional May Poems to the crowd before folk duo Blackheart took the stage with a highly melodic and quality set. They where supported throughout the afternoon by the young and gifted Gresley Colliery Youth Band, conducted by Peter Hylton. Finally the afternoon was rounded off by the superb Uttoxeter Brass Band who braved the rain to make their way from Newborough Well Dressing for their second gig of the day for which the organisers were very appreciative that they had made the effort to do so to support a local event. The sun even made a brief appearance late in the afternoon! Dave Fortune organiser said: “this years festival was a great collective effort and a great deal of hard work as always, but lays the foundations for developing the event in years to come. Plans are already in progress for a 12 hour festival next year subject to planning and funding as always” This years festival was led by Uttoxeter Heritage Conservation Group, know informally as CHUG, formed last year, who undertake heritage conservation linked projects, particularly with an education element. For more information on volunteering for the group and information on projects planned for next year, take a look at www.uhcg.moonfruit.com

First Time for Gardens to Open in Uttoxeter

he National Garden Scheme was launched in 1927 to raise money for the Queens Nursing Institute. Today there are 3,600 gardens around the UK which open for charity each year and raise a total of over £2 million for the causes supported by the NGS. They continue to support the QNI but now also support a range of other, mainly nursing, charities. They are the largest single contributor to Macmillan Cancer Support and Marie Curie Cancer Care. There are 50 gardens in Staffordshire that open and for the first time this year there are gardens in Uttoxeter open. The first one to open is Lightbounds in Wood Lane, opposite the Racecourse, which is open on Sunday June 14th and Sunday June 21st from 2:00pm to 5:00pm. There are two more open in Woodleighton Grove on July 11th and 12th . Lightbounds is an Edwardian House with a 2 acre garden set in a 4 acre plot. The garden has been created over the past 15 years by the owners, Anthony & Jenny Phillips. Jenny has designed the garden and I am reliably informed does most of the work in the garden ! It is a delightful mixture of formal and informal spaces joined by wide green paths and includes herbaceous borders, a bamboo garden, quiet sitting areas and a bog garden. “We are very proud to have been accepted by the National Garden Scheme. It is a great credit to Jenny and her creativity and hard work over the years.” said Anthony. “I hope lots of people will visit us and help raise lots of money for such good causes”. All proceeds will go to the NGS and all profits from Teas will be shared with Macmillan and Inner Wheel. There are more photos of Lightbounds garden at www.webshots.com/user/lightbounds and details of all gardens open can be found at www.ngs.org.uk or in The Yellow Book published by the NGS.

s part of their entertainment in the industry module, Thomas Alleyne’s High School, Uttoxeter, year 13 BTEC students hosted their very own ‘Princess’ party. As part of this unit of work, Hannah Sandaver, Rachel Brookes, Kayleigh Dorland and Rachel Capewell had to plan and deliver an entertainment programme to an audience of potential holidaymakers. The girls decided to stage their party hour and had been planning and rehearsing for weeks; a princess party for 3-7 year olds. Sending out invitations to their guests with a Disney princess theme, activities included – face painting, dress-up time, colouring, a ‘banquet’ and the students own interpretation and performance of the Cinderella story, with a special guest appearance from Mr Taylor (as Prince Charming). The event ran smoothly and the guests left having enjoyed their princess hour and with goodie bags in hand. When asked their favourite part, Olivia Eardley said “I liked the drinks fountain, that was my favourite part” and some others just didn’t want to go home!

Uttoxeter Juniors girls football team are in pink and white ttoxeter Junior Girls Team is going from strength to strength helped by a grant from County Councillor Geoff Morrison’s Local Members Initiative Fund. Uttoxeter Juniors Girls football squad now has forty plus members in three age categories and compete in the Burton Juniors Football league. The grant of £500 went towards new strips for the teams in a fashionable Pink and White colour scheme. The Girls sides have attracted additional sponsorship from Mr. Tom Baron of MidMC Computer Services who funds kit for the teams and has created their own web site which helps bring in new members. County Councillor Geoff Morrison said, “I am very pleased to see the success of Uttoxeter Juniors Girls Football. I was amazed to see so many eager young players at the last training session I attended, I never realised how many young people this grant goes to help. I mustn’t forget to praise the work of the volunteer coaches and parents who are the backbone to this successful enterprise.” Mr. Jason Ellerby, under 13’s and 15’s manager commented, “We really appreciate the grant from Geoff Morrison and Staffordshire County Council. The girls section of Uttoxeter Juniors Football Club has been a great success and the support and funding given is an important part of that.”

Barton Marina definitely worth a visit! By Caroline Kerr arton Marina’s Waterfront is a great location for customers to sit in the cosy lounge with its inglenook fireplace or dine alfresco on the terrace watching the activity aboard 300 narrow boats. Upstairs, the ‘Crow’s Nest’ houses a corporate, conference and function room which has its own bar and magnificent views from the private balcony overlooking the Marina. The range of Waterfront stores is interesting and varied, from foods to gifts, from toys to art. This new attraction to the area sprung up out of an ol dgravel pit and has undergone a full ugly duckling to swan transformation to become a busy and chic canalside venue. We have a number of community projects in the pipeline starting with the Chase Triathlon in June and July and are developing partnerships with local schools in various Art & Music projects alongside sponsoring the Barton Music Festival. Access to the local community has also been a priority and in November 2007 we erected a fabulous bridge with safe lighting to link the development to Barton Village. We also intend to build on current association with the National Forest and encourage visitors to fully explore the immense wildlife area. So have we achieved what we set out to do back in 1992? We think so. Attractions like this can only be beneficial to the community, provided they are completed sympathetically and to a high standard, both of which have been achieved. The Marina undoubtedly brings new people to Barton under Needwood, and with the future plans, should continue to do so in greater numbers in the future. The other great thing is that many of the shops stock local, high quality produce, which again helps to integrate the community and support local production by bringing the products to a wider audience. Not only can Barton Marina boasts its shopping experience but it really has become part of Burton’s social scene with music taking place every weekend in the pub as well as a wide and varied range of events. All in all, if you haven’t been already, Barton Marina is definitely worth a visit, and we are sure it will become a firm favourite.

Self-styled Graffiti king Temper visits Gallery 3 at Barton Marina in June he UK’s Fine Art Graffiti king Temper is set to unveil a sensational new collection of original paintings at Gallery 3, Burton-on -Trent on Saturday 6th June. This cutting edge virtuoso is a world leader in photo realism with spray paint. Temper, otherwise known as Arron Bird, has redefined the art of graffiti, bringing the spray can out of the subway and into the fine art gallery. Amazingly, Temper’s work is created exclusively with the use of spray cans, his ideas are fully conceptual free hand works of art and his unique combination of street theatre and high art has created a new art genre. Crossing boundaries, exploding elitism and appealing to people from every walk of life, Temper’s artwork adds a whole new dimension to Gallery 3’s art portfolio. Situated in the picturesque setting of Barton Marina, Gallery 3 specialises in Original and Collectable Limited editions and always enthrals its clients with an exciting programme of artist events. Bringing Temper to Barton is a real coup for its owner Rob Whitehouse, “We feel so honoured to have Temper here at Gallery 3, he is an incredibly inspirational character and our clients are going to be astounded by the sheer magnificence of his talent with a spray can”. Temper shot to fame in 2001 when he was commissioned by Coca Cola to decorate 100 million cans and bottles of sprite which helped to change graffiti history in the history in UK forever. From Whitehall’s Banqueting House to the Chelsea Players’ Lounge, his groundbreaking images are displayed in the most diverse of high profile venues. Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery was the first national gallery to showcase the work of a graffiti artist and it was an experience which had a profound effect on Temper. Since then, Temper has acquired a number of high profile collectors, including Roman Abramovich, Ian Wright, Lord Lloyd Webber, Sir Elton John, Ruby Wax and Kay Saatchi. He has breakfasted at No.11 Downing Street and fulfilled commissions as “unusual” as covering the walls of the Saatchi and Saatchi offices, leading the directors to describe him as ‘an aerosolic visionary’ - He has certainly come a long way from the Eastfield Youth Club in Wolverhampton which gave him his first commission in 1992. This latest exhibition will be a truly unmissable event. Temper will be at Gallery 3 between 2pm and 4pm on June 6th to unveil his two Limited Edition canvas collections, A New Day and Post Graphaelite, alongside previously unseen paintings. It will be a fabulous opportunity to chat with the artist and discuss his innovative technique and style.

Twenty five years in harmony

n 1984 a small group of singers joined with the Marchington Amateur Dramatic Society in two December nights of entertainment for the people of the village. This was their third appearance on stage after tentatively announcing their establishment in response to a search for a small group to lighten proceedings at the annual Harvest Supper (and, indeed, they had already ventured on stage to introduce visitors from the twinned German village of Neudrossenfeld to social life in this country. From such limited beginnings has developed a choir of more than fifty singers whose melodies have been well received in many areas of England and Europe. Such achievements were hardly to have been foreseen. As the programme notes at a later concert in Weardale put it “The Marchington Singers were formed in the summer of 1984 to entertain at a village event. About a dozen people decided that they could croak out a few notes to keep boredom at bay at the Harvest Supper - and enjoyed it so much that they decided to carry on!” – and 12 of those singers are still choir members! At the time of The Singers’ Silver Jubilee, they can look back at appearances at 84 different venues – churches and cathedrals, village halls, showgrounds, civic buildings, tents and hotels – as well as, informally, on buses, in airports, on trains and boats, the streets of Marchington and even in a castle! Tours have been undertaken to West Germany (where a local ferryboat DJ introduced them as the Marchington Swingers!), Portugal and Majorca. Highlights remain with us, particularly the appearance of our own Lucy Crowe (who, after a distinguished student career at the Royal College of Music and later Times South Bank Show finalist representing the field of opera, is now embarking on a Glyndebourne season) with her housemate Katharine Jenkins in the 2001 production of Vivaldi’s Gloria. Equally, the joint concert with the Elegy Choir from St Petersburg in 1996 and the summer concert in 2007 when Tanya Hilton, a distinguished Russian trained pianist joined The Singers remain vividly in memory. Each year, too, has seen much work undertaken for local, national and international charities, with monies raised supporting such causes as Burton’s Scanner Appeal, the County’s Air Ambulance and a Sri Lankan post tsunami building project. This year a concert has already been sung in Burton – with Moira Male Voice Choir – to support the Mayor’s charities. This year efforts have been devoted to celebrating the group’s 25 continuous years of singing– an achievement recorded by a Leek programme editor as being most noteworthy at a time when so many elements of village life are under threat. A history of The Marchington Singers has already been published. On Saturday, July 4th, what promises to be a wonderful evening has been arranged, when, at Thomas Alleyne’s High School in Uttoxeter, a Reception will be followed by a concert of memorable and “listenable “ music by Gounod, Mendelssohn and Mozart sung with the support of professional soloists and instrumentalists playing harp, organ, timpani and percussion.(Tickets are available from Tim Scott –Tel 01889 563570 – price £12 or £10 if bought before June 6th). Celebrations will continue with an Autumn dinner for both present and past members of The Singers and the year will conclude with a tour to Belgium where performances at Poperinge’s Week of Culture, Our Lady’s Church in Bruges and at the playing of The Last Post at the Menin Gate are already confirmed.

Much to our delight Janice won the New Peoples Theatre Award for the Best Actress over 21 years of age. Could there be more? Yes!!!!! The Mary Blakeman Trophy for best Presentation was won by C.A.T.S.; this award covers set design, special effects, make up, costumes, lighting and sound. This was an excellent award for us. So as you can see we continue to have success under the leadership of Marge. Please keep supporting us, and live theatre will be with you again in October as we have now begun casting for our play “Hobson’s Choice”

Farewell to a brave man who inspires all others... By Tom Holdcroft

In the spring of 2008, the Uttoxeter Voice was celebrating a sensational story of bravery and dedication from local football fanatic Daz Turner. As manager of Tean Albion Football Club, nonHodgkin’s lymphoma sufferer Daz had discharged himself from hospital to inspire his team to an unlikely cup final victory against Cheadle Cricket Club. Back then, not least because of his wonderfully positive outlook and refreshing enthusiasm for life, hopes remained high that Daz, of Boxwood Road, Tean, could battle his condition for years to come. Just 12 short months on, tragedy struck for Daz and his young family as he passed away peacefully

at home, leaving behind wife Amanda and children Hayley, Dominic and Cameron. Darren William Turner was born on 27th May 1971 and he lived in Tean throughout his life; always a popular member of the community and a friendly face around the village. He met wife Amanda at the age of 15 in 1986, and they were married in August 1999. Daz’s upbeat attitude and bravery in the face of his illness is even more remarkable considering the fact it was not the first time his life had been hit by tragedy. His brother Craig passed away, aged just 24, following a motorbike accident in Cheadle several years ago; a moment in his life that affected Daz deeply, but he coped with bravely. It was through his involvement in local football that Daz, as a player for many years with Draycott Potter and later as manager of Tean Albion, made many of his friends. Away from his family life, football was his passion. Albion securing promotion from the Uttoxeter and District League Division Two with their 14-0 win against the Blacksmith’s Arms two days after his funeral was a fitting way for Daz’s team to respond. He was an inspiration to his team, all of whom were united in forming a guard of honour as their manager left the church at the conclusion of a moving funeral service at St Giles the Abbot Parish Church in Cheadle.

Daz’s standing within the local community was illustrated by the fact that the church was packed to capacity with many further mourners looking on from the porch area. Many floral tributes and donations to the Cancer Care Centre of the University Hospital of North Staffordshire have been received in Daz’s honour. Daz’s wife Amanda said: “Daz had a heart of gold, he always put others first and worried about everyone else before himself. He would do anything to help anyone, he was a lot of fun and him and the kids were my life.” Amanda admitted the hardest day of her life was telling her children that their father’s condition had become terminal. “I always thought they would find a cure and I never excepted that he wouldn’t recover,” she said. “Daz was dedicated to his football and he loved his life, always living it to the full.” Donations can be made to the Cancer Care Centre of the University Hospital of North Staffordshire by calling the hospital on 01782 298000 or visiting the website at www.stokepct.nhs.uk.

ttoxeter Postie Des Hulme has helped two Old people homes to put on Extra Entertainment this summer by raising a total of £500 by simply donating his earnings from selling Avon products. ‘’My mum Lorraine Hulme is the entertainment manager at The Old Rectory and I know how hard she works finding acts and shows on a limited budget. Each year I try to help out with something local, I benefit from getting more people having Avon off me and the sense of wellbeing I get.” This method of selling has really helped Desmond Hulme with his Sales making him the 42nd top Seller in the country. Other previous donations and help have included a local Doctors surgery in Rocester, Douglas Macmillan & Denstone Youth Fund. “I’m getting quite excited because if I finish in the top 50 Sellers I will win a Western Caribbean Cruise which is helping me to push on with the donations and offer more discounts to my customers. Avon this year celebrates its 50th Anniversary this year and while making a £200 donation to The Hermitage Des was stunned to find that one of the residents a Mrs Miles used to be an Avon Rep from almost the beginning. “She explained to me she paid £4.50 which is equivalent of a week’s wages of today. This compares with a paltry fee of £15 spread over two campaigns now a day. Mrs Miles was worried about the initial expense, but soon found she was doing well out of the new business start up. “I’ve still got most of the crystal decanters and fine porcelain dinner sets which I won at several Avon Presentation dinners.” explained Mrs Miles. “When I started there were just a handful of people doing Avon.”

Weight Loss and body toning, no sweat! Dear Readers It is that time of year again when thoughts turn to special occasions, weddings and holidays. The time of year when the winter layers are finally removed and as is customary with warmer weather more of the flesh is on show. Now if you are like me, and I am sure I am not alone, this does pose a bit of a problem, you see all those hearty winter casseroles, and a few too many takeaways have taken up permanent residence on my body and are determined not to be shifted. It doesn’t help that I have a severe allergy to “The Gym” Not for me sweating it out on the treadmill. So what does a gym shy person like me do when our annual beach holiday is only a few weeks away? Feign illness or try and convince my husband I’m far too busy working on the next issue of “The Voice” to go on holiday. The solution to the flabby problem is a trip to Beachcombers in “Old Saddlers Yard” where Proprietor Roisin Hull and her team of therapists offer the very latest in beauty treatments including the “Arasys Inch Loss System” Now I have to admit I was rather sceptical about this, inch loss and body toning with no sweat? But my reservations are soon pushed aside, Roisin takes great care in the initial consultation to explain fully how the system works and clients are asked to complete a confidential questionnaire about general health before treatment can commence. The Arasys system was devised by the co-inventor of the pacemaker, Gerry Pollock. Micro current frequency is used to contract the muscles, simulating normal exercise. It is a non invasive treatment that really does result in genuine inch loss. Body measurements are taken prior to treatment, midway through and at the end. Arasys naturally increases metabolic rate to initiate weight loss and is great for those problem areas, that can not targeted with normal exercise. My tummy, thighs, arms and bottom felt decidedly firmer after just three sessions and I am quite happy to share with you the results at half way stage. Total loss in cm Diaphragm 3cm Waist 5cm Abdomen 7cm Hips 7 ½ cm Buttocks 7 cm Thighs L5½ R3½ A therapist, in my case Roisin (pictured), stays with you throughout the approx 18 minutes, she is charmingly discreet and a professional, she was the first salon owner to bring to Uttoxeter The St. Tropez spray booth and Dermalogica products. The treatment is suitable for ladies and men and Roisin confirmed that male clients find the treatment particularly effective for the stomach and chest areas, I am thinking of signing my own husband up for a course! I can thoroughly recommend this treatment, especially if you are like me gym shy, the inch loss has spurred me on to eat more healthily and consume more water than wine! Beachcombers salon is relaxing and friendly and offers a full menu of beauty treatments, I’ve booked a St Tropez Spray Tan in time for my holiday which is currently on special offer at just £19.00. So if you have a special occasion that you would like to lose a few pounds and inches for contact Roisin and her team at Beachcombers on 01889 564545. Single Sessions cost £20.00 Or a course of 10 which is recommended is £200.00 plus 2 free. I’m off to pack my bikini, no sweat! Uttoxeter Rugby Annual Players Dinner By Les Humphries ttoxeter Rugby Football Club recently held their Annual Players Dinner and Awards Ceremony at Denstone College, which proved to be an excellent venue. With the ladies all in their best finery, and the men in evening attire, it somehow seemed quite civilisied to have cocktails on the lawn in such a picturesque setting on arrival, this after passing between two flaming dishes on either side of the entrance, all very impressive! Everything was extremely well organised for the dinner, even down to night lights on the stairs leading up to the main hall, although the bar was a mite small for a rugby club crowd (some people die of thirst, rugby players are born with one!), otherwise full marks. An excellent meal was followed by the Loyal Toast proposed by Hon. President Julian Beattie, coffee was then served in the library whilst the tables were cleared in the main hall, ready for the speeches and awards. Speeches were then made by the President, then myself as the resident old character, followed by Club Captain Andy ‘Spike’ Moult who made a passionate speech, thanking all concerned with a mention to Donald Hayes who has coached the 1st xv to promotion this season, and Steve ‘Chopper’ Harris who’s trusty boot has kept the scoreboard ticking over in the tighter games. He also paid tribute to his wife Jo for her support and efforts behind the scenes, and along with another two ladies who have put in much unsung work Lisa and Zoe, she received a bouquet. The speeches were rounded off by Chairman Jason Cabrera, and Junior Section Chairman Steve Woolley, then came the main event of theevening, the presentation of the awards. The Young Player of the year was Tim Carr, a teenage giant who stepped up from skippering the under 17’s the previous season and into the 1st xv without any problem at all, equally at home at lock or the back row, what a prospect for the future he is. The Most Improved Player was Lee Bloor, who has looked sharp and inventive in the centre all season, not only scoring some classy tries, but being the provider as well, alongside battering ram youngster Pete Allen, who was only narrowly pipped for the top try scorer award by winger Dan Turner, who took the trophy for the second year in succession. The 2nd Team Player of the year went to Ben Gallimore, which was presented by 2nd team skipper John Parton. In addition to the trophy, Ben was given a Tractor Magazine, which seemed to excite him more than the award - he should get out more often! Clubman of the Year, The Golden Boot, and possibly the most prestigious award in the club, given for services off the field, went to Steve Woolley for his tireless efforts to the junior section. A popular choice Steve was both chuffed and dumbfounded, modestly claiming that others deserved it more than himself, but they didn’t get it Steve - you did, enjoy it! There was no-one more gob smacked than the winner of Player of the Year. When Lee Bloor’s name was called out by Spike and he was handed his second trophy of the night, the Jim Harrison Cup which has so many illustrious names on it, it was met with tumultuous appaluse. A worthy winner. Although none of the recipients chose to make a speech, I did manage to get a chat to Lee afterwards, and he told me he wasn’t really surprised at gaining the most improved player shield as he had a feeling he might just grab it, but the Player of the Year came as a bolt from the blue. Well Lee, it may have been a surprise to you, but it was well deserved. A disco took the proceedings into the early hours to round off a great evening enjoyed by 125 members and guests. We now look forward to a Summer break, and by the time this issue goes to press the Annual General Meeting will have taken place, the new regime elected, and we can all wait with baited breath for next season in the higher league.

World Challenge Run at Beaudesert Park, Cannock A

small group of determined Thomas Alleyne’s High School students set out to take part in a sponsored ‘fun run’ raising funds for their Tanzania expedition in July 2010. The event was hosted by World Challenge and students from schools across the country – Sheffield to Bury St. Edmunds - met to run the 15km route through Beaudesert Park. With many different destinations across the globe on the horizon for the students – Venezuela, Peru, Botswana to name but a few, sponsorship and ‘fun’ was the aim of the day. After the health and safety talk by World Challenge officials and a 10 minute warm up the runners hit the starting line and were off – our own mini marathon (with some runners dressing the part!) Supported by parents, friends, teachers and family all the runners were cheered across the finish line. Thomas Alleyne’s students did themselves proud, running either 5km, 10km and for David O’Farrell (who came 2nd overall), Will Keogh, Will Prince and Jake Shirley the whole 15km route – a massive congratulations and well done guys!!

Croxden

A model Abbey Uttoxeter man and his two grandchildren have created a marvellous model of one of the area’s most iconic landmarks. David Roberts, of Sorrel Close, Uttoxeter, and grandchildren Sophie and Alex Roberts, have produced a 1/1000 scale model of Croxden Abbey which has received outstanding praise from many in our local community. The model has been on show at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Uttoxeter, and also at Uttoxeter Heritage Centre. David, a retired engineering director and a County Archivist, explained to The Voice just how the idea came to light and the way in which it was implemented: ‘Some time ago I took our grandchildren, Sophie and Alex, to see the ruins of Croxden Abbey. They delighted in exploring the remains of the Abbey but it occurred to me that they probably didn’t know what they were really seeing. ‘I asked them what they thought the ruined Abbey was and they didn’t know obviously, and I am sure that lots of other visitors to the site especially children also do not know the significance of the site. ‘I explained that almost 800 years ago a great Abbey and monastic buildings had been built here to serve the local population in a Christian way of life. A beautiful church or abbey had been built to worship and an infirmary was available to look after the sick. ‘Travellers to the area could get shelter, food and lodgings before setting off on their way. Local people supplemented the monks in sheep rearing and husbandry as wool was the chief trade of this area. The Abbey was the centre of local activity for over 300 years and is still the largest Christian site in the area.

‘I asked Sophie, a pupil at St Joseph’s Catholic School in Uttoxeter, if we should make a scale model of the Abbey and she agreed that this would be a great idea. We decided that we could only build a model of the church, as to include the monastic buildings would have been an immense project. As it was, our decision to build a 1/1000 scale model was to prove very difficult. ‘The nave of the church had a public road driven through it and on the north side only footings remained. We used Ministry of Public Building and Works plans and took various photographs as well as extensively measuring the site. No one knows the true height of the building or the exact roof configurations, but we have made assessments to complete the model. ‘At this small scale the stained glass images are not true size, but the window frames are as close as we could get. To add authenticity to the model we have covered the walls with powdered Hollington stone. This was the stone used on the original abbey and shows up to good effect. ‘We hope you like our version of Croxden Abbey as we feel that this is the only scale model ever made and helps public appreciation of this site. ‘The model is well presented at Uttoxeter Heritage Centre in Carter Street and I urge more local visitors to go to the Heritage Centre as there are many more objects of interest on display and I feel it very well worth supporting.’ The Voice would like to congratulate David, Sophie and Alex on creating a wonderful scale model of one of our area’s most interesting landmarks – and isn’t it so comforting that a Uttoxeter man and his grandchildren have worked together as a family to produce their very own work of art!

Povey’s People By Radio Stoke’s Owd Grandad Piggott Each month Radio Stoke’s Owd Grandad Piggott (Alan Povey) will write a unique insight into our local life and its many characters. His infectious, humorous slant on people provides a different and unusual mix which hopefully will bring a warm smile to the faces of our readers.

This month: GONE FISHIN’ It all seemed almost too easy. Gummy Webster and Edgar Bratt had happened on a scheme that had the potential of making them the thick end of five hundred quid for an afternoon’s work. An afternoon’s easy work and Gummy Webster was heavily into easy work that generated large amounts of money All that they needed was Edgar Bratt’s moped, a couple of copper electrodes, some wire and the driving force of Gummy Webster’s powerful intellect to mastermind the operation. Gummy Webster had watched a television programme about electro-fishing which was a process used by water bailiffs and river authorities to remove unwanted species of fish from a stretch of river or a lake. It involved passing an electric current between two electrodes which temporarily stunned the fish between the two points and allowed easy removal as they floated to the surface. Gummy Webster knew a stretch of water that contained a large number of prime plump trout. Gummy Webster also knew a hotelier who would purchase such a consignment without asking too many questions – if the price was right. The river authority in the television programme had used government approved equipment to

conduct the operation complete with professional consultants and relavent Health and Safety safeguards. Gummy Webster’s equipment consisted of two lumps of stolen copper along with a couple of lengths of similarly stolen copper wire and Edgar Bratt’s moped. The venue was a millpool, the location of which shall remain undisclosed and which was normally policed by a vigilant fellow who drank in a pub frequented by Gummy Webster, so Gummy knew that on a certain day of the current month, the fellow would be attending the game fair at Weston Park and hence, thirty odd miles out of the equation. By necessity, the job needed three of them and on the night before the operation, Gummy Webster, Edgar Bratt and Billy Drummond, a sub species of no fixed abode met up in The Butchers Arms in Forsbrook. ‘It’s goin’ to be a bloody doddle!’ expounded Gummy Webster, jabbing a grubby forefinger on the table in The Butcher’s. ‘I stand at one end of the millpond holdin’ an electrode... Drummer, you stand at the other end holdin’ the other electrode. Both of these are connected up to the dynamo on the moped, then Bratt begins to pedal... An’ he pedals, an’ he pedals…an’he pedals!. When he’s got a rate good thrutch goin’, me an’ Drummer throw the electrodes into the pool an’ bingo! Two hundred stunned trout float to the top

destined for Stan Holland’s freezer and us three are in ale for the next four or five weeks.’ And so it came to pass that at midday on the day of the operation, it was pelting down with rain and Gummy Webster and Drummer were in position by the millpond as Edgar Bratt, sat astride his moped which had been placed on its stand, began to pedal. Edgar’s jaw was thrust forward and his cheeks expelled great volumes of air as his legs pistoned and the moped rocked on its stand as Edgar pedalled for England. Meanwhile, Gummy Webster and Billy Drummond of no fixed abode were experiencing grossly unpleasant prickles from the copper electrodes. ‘NOW!’ bellowed Gummy and he and Drummer flung the electrodes into the millpond. The heavy little electrodes described an arc and hit the water simultaneously whereupon several things happened at once. Edgar Bratt emitted a terrible scream and his hair shot out at right angles from his scalp. Edgar and the moped toppled sideways, Edgar convulsing uncontrollably with a look of abject terror on his face and his mouth wide open. For the next five minutes, events at the millpond went into freeze frame. Separating Edgar Bratt from his moped was no easy task. His bright yellow waterproofs had melted and soldered themselves to the frame of the moped and it was a case of ‘Let his trousers go hard and we’ll chip him off’ That evening, when the keeper got back from the game fair, it didn’t take him long to decide that something odd had gone on while he had been away. There was a patch of scorched earth around where the moped had stood and a small number of trout were muddling around on the surface of the millpond appearing somewhat confused but otherwise unharmed. Edgar Bratt never properly recovered from his horrendous ordeal. His hair was never again to lie flat on his head and the experience turned him a bit funny. He was often seen hanging around Uttoxeter Smithfield carrying a brick and looking vacantly up into the sky. He died last year in a home for the bewildered. Gummy Webster, still with an absence of teeth and William Drummond, still of no fixed abode, are still around.

Magisterial Memories By John Glandfield Uttoxeter’s Most Charismatic Solicitor ave you ever wondered why Policemen wear helmets? Well, so a notorious Client of mine advised the local Magistrates clear and loud and in the course of his trial,” It’s because they have all got pointed heads!” Said same Client also claimed in his defence in another trial when charged with an assault on a fellow bus passenger that the bus driver had only brought the bus to an abrupt halt so that he, the Client, could, “Aim my blows better”. Needless to say that explanation failed to impress the Magistrates. Whilst I could never have any truck with so-called “Drink Drivers” on one memorable occasion when a Client of mine was stopped on the A50 when asked why he was driving on such a busy road and in such a state he retorted, “I would be mad in my state to try and walk any distance along this road”. As the Police officer later said to me there was certain logic in my Client’s explanation as anyone who has tackled the A50 on any weekday will also know.

H

So often Clients will only want to admit to the bare minimum. Can anyone conceive after consuming one can of ordinary strength Lager that one would then be inclined to drive the family car straight over four or so neighbouring front gardens demolishing a couple of privet hedges and several ornamental trees in the process and, finally, nose-diving the car into a fish pond. No. Equally when he left the Pub some 4+times over the legal limit did another Client of mine really not appreciate that he was unfit to drive. Yet another Client got picked up and provided a positive breath sample when the Police spotted him giving hand signals whilst driving his car in the dead of night. Self same Client gave positive breath samples at either end of the M6 on the same day. Think about that one and the time factor, as the Police would not have released him on the first occasion until he was adjudged fit to drive. That particular Client ended up being banned until many years into this Century and his last act of defiance

before he died was to breeze into my office and declare,” I want wheels”. Yes, I did suggest the purchase of a pair of roller skates. If any reader thinks that Police and Magistrates are all deadly serious and have no sense of humour, think on. I cannot count the times when all concerned have had to resort to a violent “coughing fit” and with face thrust into the safety of a handkerchief struggle to regain some sense of decorum. Finally a joke against myself. One busy summer’s day I was push biking along Red Lane at Alton going past the “Ramblers Retreat”. A load of my juvenile Clients at the time were fooling around with mountain bikes on a nearby bank and to the obvious aggravation of the numerous families milling about in the adjacent car park. All of a sudden a shrill voice called out. “Oh, hello,Mr.Glandfield. Have you been banned as well?” Time to make a quick exit. See you in Court John E. Glandfield

DVD Rental - Rise of The Machines T

he ongoing recession has led to many people to change their spending habits. However, a state of the art machine that is due to launch in Uttoxeter is the perfect antidote to the gloom and doom. The machine, the first of its kind in the area, will enable local residents and shoppers to join many people across the UK and Ireland who are renting DVDs using futuristic vending technology. With consumer spending on traditional nights out at an all time low, people are increasingly looking for a lowcost, entertaining night in. Step in The Movie Booth, who claim that their DVD rental kiosk offers both a more convenient and lower priced movie rental service than any of their competitors. One of their DVD rental kiosks is being placed in the Spar store on Kingfisher Way, Uttoxeter and should be operational from the 6th of June. DVD rental kiosks have proven to be extremely popular in the USA, and use advanced robotics to make the rental of movies a ‘fully automated’ process. The Movie Booth kiosk stores over 600 DVD’s in a box measuring half a square metre, and stocks new release movies. Using a touch-screen menu, clients rent DVD’s on a pay-as-you-go basis as opposed to the traditional membership sign up. The Movie Booth claim that this gives customers more control over the length of their rentals and enables them to receive the most competitive prices available. The kiosk in Uttoxeter is launching with a promotional offer of £2.00 rental per 24 hours for both new releases and back catalogue titles whilst also offering new users of the kiosk their first night’s rental free. David Martin, the owner of the very busy Spar Shop on Kingfisher Way said “This new technology offers customers complete freedom of choice on the cheapest terms, with no membership, and no monthly fees or contracts required. It’s a great innovation and I’m sure my customers will find it fantastic value for money”. For further information visit www.themoviebooth.com

NE of the area’s top local painters is joining forces with The Uttoxeter & Cheadle Voice colour magazine to showcase his superb work. Ray Sheldon, who used to live locally at Bramshall, is enjoying the most creative and stimulating periods in his painting life at his studios in Stone. His work is now included in collections, both public and private, throughout the UK and abroad. Now, Ray is producing paintings especially for The Voice’s advertising features and also he is in the process of collating a collection of fine art prints which will be used in calendars in celebration of Uttoxeter, a totally unique angle on all the beauty and history of the town and its surrounding areas. Ray is also planning to take this theme into other towns and villages around our local community and the Staffordshire countryside. Ray told The Voice: ‘The success of my ‘In Celebration of Stone’ calendars has led me to believe local people really do enjoy the innovation of paintings based on our locality. I am so pleased to be able to show my work through The Uttoxeter & Cheadle Voice colour magazine which I know has a huge following and readers really do love this publication which is based totally on the local community. ‘The magazine is total class and top quality and this is a perfect vehicle to showcase my work which I hope readers will like. ‘For me painting is incredibly satisfying. With each new piece of work you try to get it right, but inevitably you sometimes fall down so you have to pick yourself up again and try and learn from what went wrong. ‘The key thing is producing the work. My work gives me a sense of calm and my studio is my sanctuary which I can escape to.’ Ray adds: ‘I am particularly interested in light and what light does to the world around us. I love paint and the process of painting which is one of change, composition, colour and subject. ‘Painting the Staffordshire landscape helps me experience the cycle of the year and the change of the seasons. My work takes me on a journey through the large towns to small intimate spaces. ‘My aim is to enable you local people to look with new eyes at your own surroundings. As a painter I am continually inspired by Staffordshire with the clash of old and new, from cobbled streets to the beautiful countryside. I try to capture the spirit of the place I see before me,’ Ray concluded. All paintings included in The Uttoxeter & Cheadle Voice by Ray Sheldon can be purchased through The Voice on 01538 651629, email uttoxetervoice@hotmail.co.uk The ‘In Celebration of Uttoxeter’ calendars will be available to purchase from October 2009 at various shops in the town. Details will be given in later issues of The Voice.

Guiding your future...

Let The Voice Be With You By Les Humphries ince the last issue of the Uttoxeter and Cheadle Voice things have been a bit hectic for me, but for the most part enjoyable none the less. We have had a Royal visit to JCB’s Rocester Headquarters, when Prince William came to the factory to commemorate the 750,000th machine manufactured by the company which was a tremendous achievement. Despite my welsh ancestry, I am an unashamed royalist (nobody has shown me anything better anyway!), and Prince William proved to be a very charismatic young man, no doubt inherited from his mother! On a lovely sunny afternoon, he was given a reception more akin to a pop star than a royal, making a point of going around all of the local schoolchildren who had turned up en bloc to cheer their hearts out. He shook hands with many of them, and also the local people, including Linda Hitchin and Gwen Woolley who are in the Church Choir with me, also my grandson Owen got to shake his hand. My granddaughter Lottie was devastated because she wasn’t able to get close enough, but it was a lovely day which none of them will ever forget. The following day I was on parade with other British Legion Standard Bearers at the big Uttoxeter Church for a memorial service at which the names of Legion members who had died in the past couple of years in the whole of Staffordshire were read out. Followed by the dipping of Standards and two minutes silence. The Service was followed with a wonderful buffet in the British Legion Club in Bradley House Next morning over a hundred Standards were on parade at the Commonwealth Cemetery on Cannock Chase for ANZAC day. This is in memory of the Australian and New Zealand soldiers who fell at Gallipoli during the Great War, also those who lost their lives in the 1939-1945 conflict. It is an annual event attended by a number of dignitaries including the Lord Lieutenant of the County. The Standards are marched past in column of four and around the cemetery to take Post behind the headstones where they remain for the service, during

S

which wreaths are laid whilst a lone piper plays, and the Maori song “Now is the hour” is sung. The whole event lasts about an hour and is very moving. Being an old soldier I feel very proud and privileged to take part, representing my Denstone Branch, and march with our standard. It is so easy to forget the men and women who laid down their lives for their Country, and that is why I feel so sad when see I how the Ghurkas have been treated by the government. Hopefully their case will have been reviewed and common sense prevailed by the time this article goes to press. These little men from Nepal look on our Queen as their Queen and are the most loyal of subjects. It makes me so annoyed when we seem to welcome people of ethnic origin and some who are allowed to preach hate against us, and join terrorist organisations, yet poor old Johnny Ghurka who has been a loyal subject during and since the Indian mutiny we don’t want. What a bunch of sycophants our politicians are! The Churnet Valley Male Voice Choir have had a busy month with several concerts in the area, including performing at a wedding at Grindon Church. We are still looking for new members, so as I say every month, come along to the Bishop Rawle School in Cheadle at 7:30 on a Tuesday which is when we meet and practice. We now have a quiet period which is usual for this time of year, but we are open for bookings if you get in quick, before what are becoming annual dates kick in from early September through to Christmas. Uttoxeter Rugby Football Club wound up their season on the 2nd of May with a veterans match against Belper Veterans. The over 35 team was skippered by Kelvin Edwards, and it was nice to see a lot of old faces with a bit less hair and a bit bigger waistline (apart from Moff!) take the field again. For a while it looked as if Belper might spoil the party on a sun drenched Oldfields, when they took an early 12 point lead, but the town rallied and eventually ran out 48 points to 19 victors In the evening it was the Annual Players Dinner and awards ceremony held at Denstone College for the first time which was attended by 125 members and guests.

It was an excellent venue with pre-meal drinks on the lawn, and following an excellent meal coffee in the library, a look around the chapel, replenishment of drinks then the speeches and awards. I was honoured to say a few words which included a tribute to Greg Cripps, a former player who sadly died of cancer recently at the age of just 38. Greg played for Uttoxeter as a precocious teenager some 20 years ago. He will always be remembered by us who knew him for his flair and skill, both as a fast elusive runner, and a goal kicker of no small ability. He was one of those naturally gifted players who played the game his way and refused to be shackled. He hung up his boots forever at an early age which was a great shame . In the following years he lived in both Germany and Africa as he travelled the world with his work, but all of us who knew him will never forget him or his contribution to Uttoxeter Rugby, our thoughts are with his wife and family. It has been a fantastic season for Uttoxeter, and Skipper Andy Moult made the most emotional speech of the night when he paid tribute to all of his squad which took the League title to win promotion, and to former coach Kelvin Edwards and his successor Donald Hayes. The Player of the year was Lee Bloor, who also lifted the most improved Player. Dan Turner just pipped Pete Allen as the top try scorer whilst Steve Woolley bagged the prestigious Golden Boot for Clubman of the Year. The evening was rounded of with a disco and more booze. Thanks are extended to Denstone College for the use of their wonderful facilities, and the ladies and gentlemen who cooked and served the magnificent repast, and tended the bar. One final word. I have to apologise to the Mother and Toddler group at St. Michaels Church Rocester who operate on Tuesday afternoons from 1;30 to 3;00 pm and not Thursdays as I stated in the last issue. But watch this space because there could be a switch in the near future - but not yet! See you all again next month T T F N Les...

Ginny’s Gardening Guide By Uttoxeter’s Ginny Gibson egonia’s, Begonia’s, Begonia’s…… If I live to be a hundred I will never forget how to plant Begonia’s, well not now anyway. I was asked to plant up several hanging baskets with various wonderful plugs and of course Begonia’s. I gaily lined the basket, cut holes in the lining sides for all the plugs, put water retaining crystals into the soil and then on top I planted the Begonia’s and didn’t give it another thought, until I was watching a wonderful gardening programme, (every Friday on one of the channels that doesn’t have adverts) and they gave a demonstration on how to plant Begonia’, they have to be planted on top of the soil, with the hollow side facing upwards, plus you must not water them from above as the water then gets into the hollow and rots the tuber………….well my blood ran cold, I knew that my Begonia’s had been planted upside down under about 5cm of compost! I told the garden owner the next day and spent about 2 hours finding the tubers, dusting them off and planting them the right way, the joys of being an amateur gardener!! As we are new to the area, I wanted to be able to introduce some local plants to my boarders, and found a wonderful website that gives you plants that are suitable for your postcode, www.nhm.ac.uk/fff/, all I did was put in the first part of my postcode ST14 and a huge list of plants came up, apparently if you plant things that are local to your area you help the wildlife too.

B

Aquilegia is a wonderful plant that I know is local to this area, it is everywhere, and very happily showing off its flowers, when we were trying to think of how to describe them, my husband said they look like a jellyfish, with the flower at the front and long tendrils flowing behind. We have deep mauve and white ones, but they also come in cream, yellow, pink, red and blue, so one for every colour scheme. If planted near a love lies bleeding you get a wonderful combination of both foliage and flowers and I have also put some sweet pea seeds behind both. The trick that I have been told with sweet pea seeds, if you are planting them straight into the ground, is to cut a small piece of the outer seed shell away, that gives the seed a better chance to germinate. You must also put a cane next to each seed for support so they can climb and climb. Sweet peas are very generous with their flowers and in order to keep them flowering you have to pick them regularly, I like to give them away to friends and family, which is half the fun of gardening, being able to share your crops. Tip from the Allotments this month comes anonymously from a wonderful quietly spoken very elegant lady, who has been working her plot at Millfield Victory Allotments for 3 years. We talked about Tomato plants going out into the ground now its June, but they need to be in a sheltered spot, if the weather turns wet you must watch out for Blight, it likes wet conditions and affects potato’s and tomatoes. Its air borne, if you

got it your leaves turn brown, you get brown blotches on the fruit. She’s hoping for a dry summer this year so that no blight decides to come to hers and her neighbours’ plots. You can start to harvest your early peas, provided that mice haven’t eaten the young plants of course (protect young plants with a cloche so mice can’t feast). And her final tip, every 2 weeks sow a small quantity of Runner and French beans, Beetroot, Leaf beets, Carrots and Spinach, that way you don’t get a glut of crops, but can continue to harvest right though the summer, heavenly. Tip from the Garden Centre this month has kindly come from Russell Heath at Strawberry Garden Centre, Uttoxeter, his plant of the month is Lavender, both English and French. One of his favourite is English Lavender Angustofolia. Hidcote is the variety that we discussed. It’s a deep blue and very fragrant, its also hardy to –15 degrees, so will be fine in our gardens, the height is 18 inches with a spread of 24 inches, so would be lovely both in a boarder and of course as part of a small hedge. Its best to plant it in full sun, but can handle some shade, Russell always clips his after flowering has ended in July to ensure that the plant stays healthy. When you are planting them from a pot into your garden normally a small amount of Blood, Fish and Bone in the hole will ensure that the growth is good and strong. Happy Gardening

4 Method of construction • Soak the oasis and secure it in a tray. • Place the liatris closely together in a vertical placement to form the main focal area, these are to be the tallest group with the most impact. • Place the allium to the right of the main group to form a neighbour group. • Place the aconitum to the left of the main group. • Cut the gerbera short and place in between one of the groupings at the bottom of the oasis, keeping the stems parallel. • Continue this process with the anthuriums and Roses. • Using folded aspidistra leaves, create a layered (but still parallel) effect by placing them around the bottom of the design until all of the oasis is covered. • To create a more textured look, you could use moss, sisal, or a mixture of layered foliage, so long as the stems are either vertical or horizontal. • I filled in any gaps with sisal to give a lovely texture.

Great success for local teams Marchington reach new heights

VILLAGE football team has scooped a top county trophy for the first time in its history! Little Marchington travelled to Eccleshall Football Club’s Stadium to do battle against The Lamb in the Staffordshire Sunday Challenge Cup and came away with the silverware to be the toast of the village. Hotshot striker Rory Maxwell scored both Marchington goals as they overcame mighty Lamb 2-1 under the bright floodlights of the Eccleshall arena. A fantastic team performance from the villagers was witnessed by unbelievable support from football fanatics in the Uttoxeter area.

A

Team Boss Bob Maxwell was over the moon by his team’s success and it is true testimony to his own talents that Marchington have also gone on to win more trophies this season. Marchington have also bagged the Uttoxeter and District Sunday

League first division title and the division one cup, and their success might not be over yet! Rory Maxwell’s brace in the Staffs Sunday Challenge Cup final was followed by two more goals against Red Lion as the local outfit won 2-1 in the division one cup final. But it is the success in the prestigious county competition which will go down in Marchington’s history books – a tremendous achievement by a village football club!

Uttoxeter Town win cup final roud Uttoxeter Town Football Club brought the First Choice Wholesale Challenge Cup back home to Oldfields Sports & Social Club after a sensational 3-1 victory over Edge Hill at The Moat Ground, Gresley. Town Manager Dean Arnold hailed his team’s success as a vintage performance and the victory was enjoyed all the more after a season full of ups and downs. ‘We had very sad news before the match that a longstanding supporter of the Town, John Lowndes, had passed away and there was a minute’s silence before the final in memory of him. ‘In the week leading up to the final I was struggling to get a full side out due to players being away and injuries which has been par for the course throughout the season, but fair play to the lads, you could really tell from the first whistle that they really wanted it and Edge Hill would have to be a far superior side to take away what we call ‘our trophy’ as we have won it 6 times in the previous 11 years – now it’s 7 from 12! ‘It was also a big day for the people behind the scenes who don’t get a lot of credit for their hard work and dedication they put in like assistant manager Rob ‘Wobbly’ Arnold, Secretary Graham ‘Shento’ Shenton, Treasurer Alan ‘Bundy’ Bown, Groundsman David ‘Spit’ Spittle and players valet Peter ‘Iggy’ Higgs. I would also like to sincerely thank our main sponsor Peter J. Douglas, he has been fantastic to our club.’ The Uttoxeter Town chief continued ‘After the previous season where we struggled for players and finished 4th in the league and also being knocked out of all cup competitions at the first hurdle, the club has gone on an upward curve. Next season I am sure with a couple of new faces the club can move

P

forward again and hopefully bring more silverware back to Uttoxeter. The facilities at Oldfields are excellent and the playing surface is the best it has been for years so persuading players to come and play down there is made a lot easier. ‘Overall I am thrilled that we won this cup final so convincingly in the end because of the players who were missing and the way the lads applied themselves was terrific – they were a credit to Uttoxeter.’ Town’s cup final goals were scored by Liam Sowter, Tommy Smith and Lee Bagley. The man of the match award was won by Uttoxeter Town’s Liam Sowter.

See you at the far post! By Mick Cullerton n all the 16 years I was running Commercial Departments in football clubs the one job I did not envy the team manager was that of telling the young apprentices that they would not be taken on as full time professional players. Probably the whole of their apprenticeship has been aimed at obtaining a professional contract. From 16 to 18 they have trained day in day out and now at 18 years old they are told they are not wanted and they have to start again. Very often it is the first rejection they have received as most apprentices have been the best in their area and top boys at school. It is very often the way they are dealt with that can determine whether they still have a career in football and how they accept their so-called failure. Football is riddled with players who have been rejected, maybe more than once, who have gone on to great heights. Ray Kennedy came to Port Vale as a 15 year old from the North East and at no time did I or anyone else at The Vale think he would end up at Arsenal and Liverpool with a load of League and Cup winners Medals, never mind play in the 4th division with Port Vale. Alan Ball told me that every time someone told him he was too small it made him even more determined to succeed and prove people wrong. It is all about attitude and inner belief. This is what the young lads must have. Football can take you to the depths of

I

Football Match Day Summariser for BBC Radio Stoke Ex Professional Footballer with Hibernian, Port Vale and Derby County

despair. You have to deal with all manner of problems but the rewards are so great, all the sacrifices made are worth it. I would never have a problem telling older players they were not getting a contract or were being left out. They have had their time and failed, the young lads haven’t and a manager is only as good as his players. This year however because of the credit crunch and the financial climate, I believe that players will be hit with a double whammy. Clubs can’t offer them contracts and there are no jobs available outside of football, even if they go non-league. This year I think will be the worst time ever to be released at lower league level. Not all players are on £50,000 per week. A lot of lower league players are not on great wages but they love the game and getting paid for doing something they love. As players approach their thirties they begin to think ‘what shall I do next?’ There are few jobs available in football and to finish playing is a major change in their lives. The man in the street would say ‘why don’t they prepare when their playing days are over’ but most players don’t want it to end and therefore put it to the back of their minds. Young players have to deal with a lot of emotions if they are going to make a living in the professional game. I always tell young players if they are released that it is only one man’s opinion and if you are good

enough you will come again even if it is via non-league. When I think back to the time when I was playing for Scotland’s Under 16’s and Under 18’s although people like Lou Macari, Peter Marinello, Willie Carr and Martin Buchan came through to play at the top level I would say that 15 out of the 20 never even made the grade to professional level and that was the cream of Scottish youth football at that time. You can see how hard it is to reach the top. You also have to have the breaks to stay fit and healthy. During my playing career I had glandular fever, asthma, a broken ankle, broken collarbone, torn ligaments in both knees, a cartilage removal, broken jaw plus my nose was broken 6 times and yet it might surprise you to know that I consider myself to have been quite lucky with injuries! So as you understand not only do you need ability but you need a bit of luck on your way to get to the top in football. The next time you see a club has released a young player just think how he must feel with all his hopes and aspirations dashed and he must find another role in life. In one of my earlier articles for The Voice I talked about the behaviour of certain players being role models. Chelsea should be hammered by UEFA for their failure to control their players in their semifinal match against Barcelona. The fact

that the referee was totally incompetent does not give them the right to act like spoiled brats. Drogba, Ballack and John Terry should be made examples of. I am a big fan of Guss Hiddink but I was astonished to hear him trying to defend Didier Drogba who I believe the majority of players would like to slap in the mouth for his childish antics. There can be no excuse for Chelsea’s pathetic behaviour and I hope they are severely punished. I personally thought that the only penalty they should have had was Piques’ handball. If every time the referee is incompetent, which seems to be a regular occurrence at present, players must be made aware of their responsibilities as role models. John Terry is the England captain, Bobby Moore must be turning in his grave at his behaviour. Whatever happened to the respect campaign. Without the referee the game is not worth playing. If it carries on like this, nobody in their right mind would want to be a referee. It was however nice to see the way in which Darren Fletcher of Manchester United took his red card in the other semifinal. It appears that the card was not justified but he just took the decision and walked. See you at the far post Mick Cullerton

On and off the field By Alan Smith ell hello again, I’m sitting here this morning with the comfort of knowing that my beloved Stoke City will again be playing at the top level next season and believe it or not with points to spare! My love of Stoke City goes back to the mid-fifties when I was taken to see them by my parents. But I really became a fan in the Waddington times, and later I was to become a good friend of the great man. He told me of the heartbreak when he had to dismantle the side to pay for the storm damaged ground in the early seventies. We had a mutual friend George Byatt of Cheadle who about this time was chairman of the Sunday soccer side I managed Cheadle United and Tony would come to our dinner presentations at the end of the season to present the awards. He would bring along with him Alan Hudson who was probably the best player or one of them pull on a Stoke shirt. Huddy became a friend also and he told me many times of how much he thought of Waddo. He looked up to him like a father when he left Chelsea. And we would on many occasions at the Richmond at Shelton over a few drinks discuss football and the inevitable question arose – and I asked Tony who was his best ever Stoke City signing, knowing full well that his signings consisted of legends like Sir Stanley Matthews, Jimmy McIlroy, Jackie Mudie, Peter Dobing, Roy Vernon, Maurice Setters, Eddie Clamp, Jimmy Greenhoff, Peter Shilton and Huddy plus many more. But he surprised me and said ‘well who do you think my best signing was Alan, my favourite player was the one who I think gave Stoke their promotion and drive into the old 1st division and that was Denis Violett so you could imagine how gobsmacked I was to hear his agreement. We talked about some of his players who but for injury would have made a good living from football and one he named was a lad who at that time had joined me as a player at Cheadle – that was Kev Bomber Sheldon, a flier of a winger who unfortunately broke his leg against Leeds and a tackle from Joe Jordan. Then George was arranging a testimonial match and also a benefit dinner for Tony,

W

40

Bomber was to play as a guest player in the match against Mike Pejic. And Pejic, knowing Bomber was a flier, warned him before they went out to play the match at the Victoria Ground ‘Take the mickey Bomber and you’re in Row 3 okay?’ Pejic warned Bomber, Kev took the hint and stayed intact for all the match which was a success as was the benefit dinner held a few weeks later at Keele Hall. It was a matter of who’s who that night I was awestruck with the likes of Sir Matt Busby, Joe Mercer, Alan Ball, Huddy, Sir Stanley and many many others. And I tell the story of that night when nature called and I had to have a wee. Well, just imagine Sir Matt Busby was on one side, Joe Mercer on the other – just the three of us standing at urinals talking football!!! I think they were trying to pick my brains!! Why are United so successful Joe Mercer said and Sir Matt replied ‘well you can’t fail with the likes of Bobby Charlton, Denis Law and George Best.’ Joe said ‘No Matt, not Manchester United, Cheadle – Alan how do you do it?’ Well that’s my story and I’m sticking to it…………… But seriously Tony revered Sir Matt and had a good relationship with him and Manchester United. And on finding out that Man Utd were thinking about releasing Denis Law, Tony and his then chairman at Stoke Albert Henshall travelled out to the 1970 World Cup Finals in Mexico to get first go at tempting him to Stoke. They had through their contacts within the media found that Sir Matt and his chairman Louis Edwards had rented a place in Acapulco. Tony and Mr Henshall went to their bungalow, knocked on the door and Sir Matt opened it and invited both Stoke officials inside. Tony told Sir Matt that he’d heard through reliable sources that Denis was to be allowed to go. With that Sir Matt called into the room his chairman who was having a siesta in the hot steamy afternoon sun. ‘did you hear what young Tony wants Louis,’ Sir Matt said. ‘What’s that Matt,’ retorted Louis.

‘He’s after signing Denis Law, but Louis I think we will hold on to him another couple of years after what he managed to get out of Denis Violett, Maurice Setters, Jimmy Greenhoff and David Heard.’ Tony maintains that was the best compliment he had ever had! What a gentleman Tony was, nothing too much trouble and I can honestly say I never heard him swear or bad mouth about anyone. He was sadly to die on the day Stoke played Oldham in a FA Cup match at Boundary Park but before he passed away he was told Stoke got a draw, which I am sure left him happy. But now to update you on my plight to find my father. Well with the help of my beautiful and loving wife we have been able to trace the family through his social security number we managed to get from a friend with American connections. Sadly my father passed away in 1989 aged 69, he has other children Rose and Armenter my step sisters and Leroy my step brother. What smashing names they are, perhaps if mum had allowed him to take me back to the States as he wanted I probably would have been a Garfield or a Tyrone, you never know!! But I’m glad I stayed and mum kept me in England. We visited the States on honeymoon but found it would have been too much too soon to drop in on my new found family. First we have to build bridges and I’m sure that I was not good news to everyone. But I did find the Yanks a bit OTT with their yes sir, no maam, have a good day sir stuff. We did manage a game of golf whilst on honeymoon in America and signs around the course warned us of the alligators in the swampy areas around the course! Well, sometimes you have to go if you have to go and that time was about the 8th hole and I slid into the bushes. I came out unscathed thank goodness but was shaken by an American player afterwards saying he had seen the ali in eight inch rough and believe me he meant it!! But who’d want a grumpy 63 year old for dinner??? See you soon Smithy
