Yet again, The Voice is absolutely jam-packed full which is a true testament to its fantastic popularity and success. We have been bowled over by the sheer volume of local businesses booking advertisements for this issue and I must sincerely thank our advertisers. Of course the success of The Voice is down to you because our readers are taking their custom to our advertisers and this is the key to a community magazine because everyone wins! By readers supporting our advertisers, they in turn support The Uttoxeter & Cheadle Voice magazine, and then we can create a full colour glossy magazine free of charge to our local homes and businesses, distributed by the ultra professional Royal Mail Door to Door Service to a huge area. In this issue we have a heart-warming article on two Uttoxeter sisters in our Makeover Feature and also a very popular local couple tie the knot in Just The Perfect Day feature. We have introduced a new feature entitled ‘This Month’s Shop Review.’ This is a very important feature for our local businesses because it gives them a chance to get up close and personal with our readers by explaining why customers should shop there and the perception of their own business. The Uttoxeter & Cheadle Voice Christmas Issue will be distributed the last few days of November and the first days of December so I urge businesses to book adverts as soon as possible so they can secure space as we anticipate yet another bumper issue. The important deadline date for us to receive advert bookings is November 15th, so telephone us well in advance of this date to book your advert in our Christmas issue. I hope you enjoy reading this issue of The Voice, speak to you soon. Kind regards Nigel Titterton Editor and Publisher

Brand new Sports School comes to Uttoxeter… SportsCoach launches with a successful and enjoyable OPEN DAY! s the sun blazed down on the idyllic grounds of Abbotsholme School, boys and girls had their first taste of SportsCoach Uttoxeter. Parents were given an exclusive presentation and tour of the facilities, whilst the children got to try out the specialised sports equipment with the SportsCoach Principal and Coaches. SportsCoach is a weekend sports school that is for Boys and Girls aged 4 – 16 years. Children of all abilities are able to experience diverse sporting activities as well as the main stream sports taught in education. The aim of SportsCoach is to give children the opportunity to express themselves through sport and helps them to develop many life skills such as confidence and communication as well as sporting skill and aptitude. The school runs for 3 hours on a Saturday morning from 9.30am until 12.30pm. The students change activity each hour and cover an hour of Team Sports, Individual Sports and the exclusive Team Challenges. Each discipline focuses on a different element of sport and child development and our professional coaches’ work closely with each student to ensure maximum results are achieved. Alongside this a huge amount of fun is had as weekends are for ‘letting off steam’ after a long week in the classroom. SportsCoach runs for 12 weeks alongside the usual academic terms. SportsCoach covers a variety of activities such as; Archery, Fencing, Short Tennis, Football, Netball, Basketball, Martial Arts, Orienteering, Badminton, Volleyball, Cricket, Rugby, Athletics, Aerobics and many more. Additionally and uniquely, each week SportsCoach incorporate Team Building and Motivational Challenges as an integral part of each term. This enables the students to work on their communication, team working, listening, and lateral thinking skills and is often the highlight of the week’s activities. Alongside our main school SportsCoach runs an Early Sporties class for 4 – 6 year olds, they cover the same disciplines as the older children but for 3 half hour classes and work with one of the professional coaches and their assistant. SportsCoach Uttoxeter is run in a safe and structured environment. Our classes are capped at 16 students to ensure our Coaches have adequate time with each child giving us an excellent teacher to pupil ratio. SportsCoach has a strict Child Protection Policy and all staff are checked by the Criminal Records Bureau. SportsCoach is a division of Stagecoach Theatre Arts Plc. 3 Good Reasons why SportsCoach Uttoxeter is good for the well being of your 4 – 16 year old. 1. Regular Physical Exercise in youngsters increases their confidence, stimulates the brain, keeps them fit and decreases the chance of illness. 2. At SportsCoach, students learn valuable life skills such as teamwork, cooperation, self-discipline and an appreciation of how to win and lose. 3. Its fun, it’s educational and what’s more your child will develop friendships with like minded-youngsters. SportsCoach gives children a chance to participate, a chance to learn and a chance to achieve. Places are limited due to small class sizes To enrol your child, or for further information please contact: Principal, Alex Bailey, Telephone 01782 287171, email uttoxeter@sportscoach.co.uk.

Poet at Thomas Alleyne’s n Thursday 1st October 2009, poet and comedian Ash Dickinson visited Thomas Alleynes to perform poetry workshops throughout the school. On the evening, he hosted our annual Poetry Cafe where students, staff and governors read poems by candlelight. Y13 student Becky Prew read her poem personifying a cardboard box and Jemma Johnson read her lyrics accompanied by guitar. Congratulations to Alicia Brown in year 10 who won the poetry competition this year. If you would like more information about Ash, visit his website www.ashdickinson.com. A great day celebrating poetry in all its forms was enjoyed by everyone involved and we look forward to next year.

ver 30 Brownies from Uttoxeter packs visited the science department at Thomas Alleynes High School last term. Helped by some of the specialist science teachers, the Brownies each carried out three investigations in the new rural science laboratories. They investigated how to test the acidity and alkalinity of household substances using homemade natural indicators, how to separate the colours from sweets and how to blow the largest bubbles. At the end of the evening, each Brownie was presented with a certificate and their science badge.

ollowing recent publicity about pressure sales tactics aimed at elderly and vulnerable people there have been a rise in the number of calls for help made to local, reputable mobility product specialists, Moorland Mobility. Malcolm, Terry and Gina of Moorland Mobility share the Council’s concern that older and vulnerable people are falling prey to the sharp practices of some operators selling mobility aids. Terry Connop, owner of Moorland Mobility says: “We stock a number of options on our mobility items, with a large number of different scooters and wheelchairs. These are important items in people’s lives and it is important they choose the option that suits them best.” Gina, our specialist advisor for Moorland Mobility, advises: “Not only have some people paid over the odds, which is distressing, it is also concerning that the equipment may not be correctly fitted to the user. A lot of equipment, from walking sticks to mobility scooters, come in different sizes or have adjustable settings. These may need checking and adjusting.” Moorland Mobility is offering a free check on any equipment that is brought into either their showroom in Leekbrook, or the new shop in . . . . in Uttoxeter. For those unable to visit in person Moorland Mobility can make service and safety checks on goods in the home. This home service is, they stress, by appointment only and their normal published prices apply. t really was ‘Just The Perfect Day’ for a local couple when they were married at St John’s Church, Hollington. Bride Gemma Grazier, daughter of David and Shelagh Grazier, and Groom Benjamin Murphy, son of Michael and Linda Murphy, enjoyed a wonderful day amongst family and friends. Gemma chose Rebecca Grazier as her bridesmaid and Ben selected Peter Haycock as his best man with Ashley, Stacy and Phillip Bourne the ushers. The bride and Groom give their individual thoughts on their ‘Just The Perfect Day:’ BRIDE: ‘I woke up at 6am on the morning of the wedding on my mum and dads settee feeling very nervous and unable to get back to sleep. Kelly Walker came at 8am and started on my hair and makeup then I managed to have some breakfast. Denise Wheat Photography came around and started to take some photographs and the next few hours went by like a whirlwind and then suddenly I was in the wedding car with my dad being taken to the church. Walking down the aisle was a complete blur and the rest of the day was taken up with photos, fantastic food by Ann’s Catering, drinking and making some very happy memories..’ GROOM: ‘I woke up at 6.45am and then walked the dogs whilst practicing my speech in an empty field! When I returned home I woke up my best man who had stopped over the night before. We both had showers and were ready in our suits for 9am. I spent time pacing up and down our hallway trying to calm my nerves. The car came at 11.45am and took us all to the church. Denise Wheat met me at the church and took the first lot of photographs. It was then time to wait for Gemma to walk down the aisle.
I
The rest of the day went by like clockwork and the weather was perfect. We both had a fabulous day together and loved celebrating it all with our friends and family.’

Record breaking examination results are only part of the story at Newcastleunder-Lyme School. For the leading independent school prides itself on beingfirmly centred in the community it serves and on itsrecord of providing an all round education for its pupils. This is a “family school” with many current pupils ableto trace their connections with the School through thegenerations. The School’s archive material is proving to be a uniqueresource for local historians and families interested ingenealogy. Famous north Staffordshire names such asWedgwood, Twyford, Bennett, and Brittain spill fromthe pages of School registers. The School’s innovative bursary programme means thatit is able, and committed to, providing access to as manychildren as possible from all backgrounds. The School makes available, through assistance withschool fees, over £700,000 a year so that it can continueto serve the children, families and the wider communityof Staffordshire, Cheshire and Shropshire. Despite high academic achievements it is indisputably not an “exam factory.” Pupils individual talents are recognised and nurtured and extra curricular activities are given a high priority.

At Indulgence, we have just completed our first year in Uttoxeter Before coming to Uttoxeter we had carried out our research looking at towns like Lichfield, Ashbourne, Bakewell and Matlock before settling on Uttoxeter. 12 months on I have to say we made the right decision. We are very proud of Uttoxeter and its achievements and hope that Uttoxeter is proud of us. Especially as we feel we belong to Uttoxeter and hope that Uttoxonians are pleased to recommend us to friends. Our first year has been very busy with a wide variety of events. We have hosted an exhibition from internationally famous artist Simon Stevenson, entertained Charles Hanson from BBC Bargain Hunt at a free valuation evening, hosted several Ladies only nights, been encouraged to open on evenings for speciality food nights and private parties (which always go down well). Whilst entertainment has been provided by local bands and we are steadily growing and maturing the business. Currently we have a display of artwork from the Ladies Denstone Art Group, you are welcome to come and view. It is a great pleasure for us to see regular people coming in and bring friends, showing off the lounge. A recent accolade for us was a lady came in and explained that she was in a tea lounge in Northumbria and over heard a conversation between two friends, one of them local to Northumbria and the other visiting. They were debating the merits of the tea lounge over a coffee shop that they frequent in Staffordshire. The one lady explained that ‘the tea lounge was very nice but not as comfortable or plush as the coffee shop she goes to back home’. “Well actually she was heard to say “ours is a Coffee Lounge not a coffee shop Whereupon both ladies agreed the coffee lounge was more comfortable and relaxing with the best coffee and cheesecake they had ever tried. It turns out that the coffee lounge in discussion was Indulgence. We were particularly pleased with this as it means people are talking about Uttoxeter and are bringing friends to visit this historical market town. Also within the last 8 months a Trade Forum has formed to promote the merits of the town gaining support from the Chamber of Commerce, ESBC & SCC. All have been keen to promote the positive aspects of the retail experience in Uttoxeter. Uttoxeter came 2nd in a recent nation survey of market towns for the quality of the retail experience. Whilst a very high 96% of visitors to the town rated Uttoxeter as very safe and secure whilst they visited the town. This is the highest ever score anywhere in the UK and is a credit to the people and store keepers of the town. A new business network group, GF4B meets in the lounge fortnightly, Thursday mornings and share business ideas and collective support each other growing their own businesses to the benefit of Uttoxeter. Any local business owners are welcome to come along. To bring us right up to date the ‘Shop Uttoxeter’ initiative sponsored by the SCC was launched by Dr Johnson and a new loyalty card will be launched shortly for Uttoxeter residents. Details to follow. All in all and despite the recession we made an excellent choice in Uttoxeter, the coffee lounge continues to grow month on month as more and more people find us and bring their friends in to meet, entertain and indulge.

Fun was had by all, when staff at Indulgence Coffee Lounge, Uttoxeter dressed to impress in order to raise awareness and funds for Macmillan Cancer Support. Their efforts and with massive support from the people who visited the lounge they collectively raised enough money for several hours support by a Macmillan family support worker, who helps and supports families who have been affected by a cancer diagnosis. “We set out to dress as Goldie Locks and the Three Bears, but when the girls saw my costume I was renamed ‘Scary Locks’. I must admit I am a little concerned about some of the people in Uttoxeter who kept ogling my chest and the offers of marriage I received. explained David Hunter a partner in Indulgence. “If anybody was upset that I declined their offer, don’t worry I have kept all contact details and yes I kept the costume On behalf of Macmillan and Indulgence Coffee Lounge I would like to offer a big thank you to everybody who supported us on Friday, especially the lady who put money in my stocking top.

celebrating Abbotsholme School
bbotsholme celebrates its 120th Anniversary this year and to mark the occasion the school put together a programme of special events. Over the summer holidays a group of intrepid climbers went to the Himalayas to climb 6,000 ft to Island Peak and a squad of rugby players travelled to South Africa to play school teams in Johannesburg and Cape Town. Other groups travelled to Sweden, Yorkshire and the Lake District as a record number of pupils completed their Gold Duke of Edinburgh expeditions. Headmaster, Steve Fairclough, explained, “This year, staff and pupils are celebrating the accomplishments and achievements of past pupils and pledge to continue to carry the baton to ensure the ethos of Dr Cecil Reddie, the school’s founder is maintained. Pupils since 1889 have been taking part in outdoor activities alongside their academic timetable to ensure that they thrive as individuals and develop their diversity of talent. Cecil Reddie’s ethos certainly translates well in the present day, where an education at Abbotsholme provides not only the starting blocks but also the first few metres of life’s track.” During the school’s Open Day, Abbotsholme welcomed Lady Moss, the wife of former racing driver, Sir Stirling Moss, to officially open the new library. Steve Fairclough said, “The addition of the new library to the school is tremendous and will greatly enhance the learning experience for the pupils. We are very grateful for the generosity of the Old Abbotsholmians in raising the funds for this facility. I hope it remains, in one form or another, for another 120 years.” He added, “Our founder, Cecil Reddie, wanted to create a school which put the needs of the individual first which provided an education for life beyond university and looked to educate our future leaders in the ways of honesty, courage, humility, respect and integrity. This is what we do now, exactly what Cecil Reddie would have envisaged. I am very proud to be part of Abbotsholme, past and present.”

First choice for quality bath, bed and home products…
Helen Louise makes a home in Uttoxeter ust a month since the opening of a quality new shop in historic Carter Street, Uttoxeter and the signs are already looking promising for new tenant Helen Davies. ‘Helen Louise’ is a fine example of why shoppers are increasingly visiting Uttoxeter for quality products at a fair price. Stocking an amazing array of products for the bath, bed and home over two floors of the shop there is truly something for everyone. Priding herself on luxury ranges of towels, bed linens and toiletries, Helen was careful not to duplicate products offered by existing shop owners in the town. She commented “All the retailers look after each other here and offer help where they can. I am delighted to be a part of that close-knit community and to offer stock that no-one else does.” As well as home interiors products, babies, toddlers and children are particularly well catered for with a fantastic selection of toys, blankets and sleeping bags as well as baby baths, accessories and kiddies toiletries. Helen is looking to make her shop the first port of call for customers requiring gifts for a new baby or birthday presents for the toddlers of the town. Despite having only been open just over a month, Helen has already proved to be flexible in her offer and has recently added a picture framing service to her portfolio at the request of customers. Looking forward to the important Christmas Season, Helen has filled the shop with a variety of products perfect as stocking fillers and tree presents. She is also looking forward to participating in the town’s annual festive activities such as cracker night and is an active member of the town’s trade forum. Throughout December Helen will be joining forces with other members of the trade forum to open until 8pm every Wednesday. Helen Louise is situated at 32 Carter Street next door to the Uttoxeter Heritage Centre.

Let The Voice Be With You By Les Humphries ell readers, lots to cram in to this months mainly pat on the back column. But first the usual bit of a moan as the grumpy old man that I am As a Neighbourhood watch co-ordinator in Rocester, I sometimes have to have words with some of the younger members of the village about their anti social behaviour, such as harrassing elderly members of the community. Most of them show some respect and disperse when asked, but sadly you only need one rotten apple in a barrel to turn the others, and Rocester is only a small barrel. The amount of litter scattered around the village centre is nothing short of disgraceful, do the perpetraters not realise that in a very short space of time they will be the custodians of the community themselves? What sort of role model will they be for their own children when they have them, when they have absolutely no pride in their village? The other moan I have is cyclists. Nothing wrong with cyclists as such, they are keeping the planet smoke free, but I just wish that they would use the cycle paths when they are provided. When the new link road was put in to join Stafford to Stoke, which takes us over the A50 off the Rocester road at the back of McDonalds, they put in a cycle path which goes all the way to Tesco’s. But for some reason the ruddy cyclists choose to ignore it and ride on the main road, quite often holding everybody up for long stretches. They keep telling us to think bike, how about bikes thinking car occasionally, ( I don’t drive, but they also hold my bus up!!) On the pleasurable side, the Churnet Valley Male voice choir with whom I have the pleasure of singing, held their Annual Concert in Cheadle Methodist Church on the 19th of September, all proceeds going to guide dogs for the blind and the church. The concert was once again a huge success, and as we were fortunate enough to have the wonderful blind soprano Denise Leigh and her husband Stefan Andrusyschyn who is also blind as our guests, it made for a fantastic evening enjoyed by everyone. We went through our repertoire with great gusto, with both Denise and Stefan having solo spots as well as duetting, Stefan is an unbelievable performer on the piano accordian, and both of them wowed the audience. The highlight of the of the concert for the choir was when we performed ‘The Virgin of the Angel Host’ with Denise to close the show. It was a real pleasure for us, but as our chairman Geoff Hartley said when he announced it “We are not sure if Denise feels the same!” Two weeks later we sang for the Cotton Mothers Union to a packed audience at Cauldon L ow Village hall, when we appeared with the Alton Handbell ringers - and bye gum didn’t that pie and pea supper go down well!
W
ttoxeter Rugby Football Club at the time of writing, are going great guns. Having been promoted to Midlands Four East (North) this season, they are currently topping the League on points difference with 3 games played and won, scoring 142 points, with only 9 against, plus beating Cannock in the Owen Cup by 15 points to 6, not having conceded a try anywhere along the way. New coach Robert (Rob) Scragg has worked hard on the lads during the close season, to bring them to a peak fitness which has stunned their opponents so far this season. Rob, who is Staffordshires most capped player with 60 appearances, a former captain of both the County and Burton, has now returned to his roots at his former club at Uttoxeter at the age of 40, having once been the youngest captain of the town side before moving on to greater things. You would think that Rob would be happy with what the lads had achieved so far, but not a bit of it. “We are still making too many silly mistakes” he told me whilst watching Uttoxeter demolish East Retford by 51 points to 6. “It should have been much more” said Rob, “The lads got white line fever, trying to create gaps that wern’t there, instead of playing the expansive game we are capable of.” I love his attitude, and it’s obvious that the lads are enjoying their rugby both on and off the field, and even with key players missing through injury and unavailability they can still put out a strong enough side to compete with the best in their their division. The Saturday following their demolition of East Retford they travelled

I well remember him making his debut for JCB RFC in the days when there were no leagues, only friendlies. We had recently formed a 2nd XV and were on the lookout for big lads to make up the team, and Julian fitted the bill perfectly. So we pursuaded him to come along and watch a match at Stoke Rugby Club on a Sunday afternoon. The team was short of a player so he was persuaded to turn out, despite having had a pint in the bar already, and never having played any rugby in his life before. We fixed him up with a shirt and a pair of shorts, but no-one had any boots to fit his size 13 feet. Then in a glass case on the wall someone spotted a big pair of boots which one of Stokes County stars of yesteryear had presented to the club. The case was duly forced open and the old pair of dusty dubbined boots with the studs nailed on taken out, they were totally illegal by today’s Just a short journey from Uttoxeter, standards, but they fitted Julian perfectly, so he took the field in them. Ginny’s Gardening Guide By Uttoxeter’s Ginny Gibson ardening in October – every book and gardener I have spoken to say that October is the time to start putting the garden to bed for the winter, we normally have the first of the frosts and so all the lovely annuals that have been doing a great job of cheering up the garden will now succumb to the cold and die off, they can be pulled out or dug in, this depends on your philosophy. Cutting back all the shrubs is also advised at this time of year, so my phlox and valerian and iris will all be cut down to ground level so that they survive the winter. It’s also a good time to put name tags next to each clump, but my puppies love to play with name tags, so I am going to do a simple plan on paper, it’s a great way to record what you have, what you have added and to see what survived. I also make a note of what did well and where, so that I can move them if necessary. It’s also the time to increase the plants in your garden without spending money, dividing your existing plants is the answer. You can divide plants now, but watch the weather, if the weatherman says we are about to have a spell of wind, rain and cold, (sorry I am afraid October does bring this weather), then wait to divide. The trick to success with dividing is that the plants need to be lifted, divided and then immediately put back into the warm, well drained soil, otherwise they will not survive. Of course another way to increase your spring display is with bulbs. We have decided that we want lots of fragrant daffodils in the garden so I have ordered a 25kg sack of ‘Cheerfulness’ bulbs, apparently that is 360 bulbs, do you think I might be busy?
G
Having said that October is the time to put the garden to bed, we all need colour to help us through the winter and by adding Violas and winter flowering Pansies you can achieve this right up until end of November. The Violas are perennial, so they will come back each year, remember that when you are planting, whereas the pansies are annual and you will remove them later. For my tip of the month I visited Heath House Farm nursery and tearooms in Forsbrook, ST11 9BQ, and was greeted with hundreds of trays of wonderful blousy Pansies and elegant Violas, in all sort of shades. Sue who showed me round explained what I had to do with each plant. The varieties of Pansies they grow are the Delta range, they produce large smiley plants, which if you deadhead them then they will flower and flower, from now until end of November, then in December and January the leaves will stay green but its too cold for flowers, but the flowers will come back in February right the way through to May, when you take them out to make way for other annuals. The Violas are similar; they will flower now until November, and then come back in February, but in April you just cut them back, as they are perennials. Sue recommended adding Bellis Button to my planting scheme; they are a little bedding plant that has low raised leaves like a daisy and then wonderful small pompom like flowers. I have planted these in amongst my violas and pansies and am looking forward to seeing them flower. The nursery
has a wonderful coffee shop with ‘non fattening cakes’ (well), and Sue and I discussed dead heading over a slice of Chocolate Cake, (gardening can be tough!!!) when dead heading Pansies and Violas, look for when the flower starts to fade, then you take off the whole flower stake, that way the plant does not get a chance to form a seed, which is it’s whole aim in life, so it then flowers again to see if it can form a seed, so by dead heading you are tricking it into continuous flowering. Simple. Back on the Alexandra Crescent allotments, Arnold and Arthur (pictured) are ‘sweetening’ their ground by adding lime to the top of the soil after digging over. It also helps to get rid of club root, which has affected the cabbages and broccoli this year. You cannot compost affected plants and they take them to the tip. They have been working their plot for three years and like me are learning all the time, they have just discovered that if they use a soap based outdoor cleaner, 100 to 1 mix and add this to the soil, it will also help get rid of club root. They promised to update me next year if it has worked. They were busy cutting down their broad bean plants, they leave the roots in the ground over winter to help return nitrogen to the soil, but the tops they will dig back into the earth as green manure. They are harvesting the last of their white beetroot, which has been a great success but they are leaving the parsnips in the ground until the frost comes, the frost will ensure that their parsnips are sweet, another tip that I never heard of before. They are a wonderful pair of gardeners and both are very generous with their time, they left me by saying ‘we like experimenting with new things, hence the white beetroot’
Magisterial Memories By John Glandfield Uttoxeter’s Most Charismatic Solicitor touched on sources of humour in my last article – I have often thought that when dealing with people who were often in the depths of despair and always, at the very least, stressed out if you could not seize upon and appreciate the lighter side of things when they did present themselves you would go barmy. My wife is prone to telling me that I already have! It is also fair to say that a sense of humour could so often help in dealing with sensitive or embarrassing topics with the Client, Police, Magistrates and so-called Authority generally. Thus and not infrequently when visiting a Client who was in custody prior to appearing in Court the dialogue would often go something like this: “ Is it possible for me to see So-and-So?” I would ask of the Prison Officer who opened the door leading to the Cell area. “Let me see,” there would then be a moments hesitation before the ponderous reply, “I believe that he/she is available today and receiving visitors but just let me go and consult his/her Engagement Diary”. Before we leave, probably only for the time being, the humour aspect there was one a very able – long since retired – local Police Sergeant who before the advent of the Crown Prosecution Service, occasionally prosecuted in Court. He was a past master at the art of timing. In one memorable Case from the look at the time of the Sergeant’s face all in
I
Court knew that there was a belter of a punch line coming. The matter involved a youth being stopped in Uttoxeter and who was driving a car in a very dubious mechanical state – to describe it as an “old banger” would have been a gross compliment! “When you pressed the horn button the headlights came on,” reported the Sergeant who then went on,” When you depressed the clutch pedal the engine cut out, when you operated the indicator switch the horn blasted “ and so it went on, until, after hearing a catalogue of mechanical defects the Court was told what the young Driver had to say about all this. “Well. Officer, “ the Driver was alleged to have responded,” It was a good job that you stopped me. I could have been killed in that motor”. On one occasion, in the small hours, my assistance was requested by the Police following the arrest, not too far from Uttoxeter, of a French Lorry driver who spoke little or no English and had been caught with the intention of being “at it” or at least “Trying to do it” with a local young lady who was, in fact, under age but far from obviously so and who was not entirely unknown to the Police. At the time professional interpreters were hard to come and virtually non-existent in the wee small hours and there was more than a mere suspicion that the lorry driver, taking especial account of communication problems, may well have been, to some extent, initially conned and, thereafter, got carried away.
Nothing had, fortunately, actually happened and noone wanted the hassle of keeping him in the cells overnight let alone putting the matter before the Court. So it was that the Police and I put our collective heads together – “Implementing the Ways and Means Act” we used to call it – and deeming it a sufficient “punishment” and warning against trying anything like that in the future, we somewhere managed to get it across to the Driver that as a result of what he had done he needed to get back home as fast as he could and then see his Doctor urgently for an immediate course of double-strength Antibiotics. The look on the poor fellow’s face could not have been more expressive of fear and remorse if he had been handed out a substantial prison sentence and I recall that he then exited the Police Station at a rate of knots or, should I say, “kilometres”. I once asked a Police Officer what, in the context of his work, the expression “Pro-active” meant. “Well,” he responded without a moment’s hesitation, “generally in Policing you only affect an arrest after you have seen someone doing something or suspect that something has happened. If you are Pro-active you don’t wait that long”, My mind boggled and I always doubted that the Officer’s definition would have met with the approbation of the Chief Constable let alone any civil libertarian So with that I will close. See you in Court, John E.Glandfield

Vicky’s motions ran high as a sister’s birthday gift overwhelmed a Uttoxeter woman! Lisa Hudson, of Stafford Road, Uttoxeter, wanted to give her sister, who has suffered two years of terrible trauma, a very special birthday present. Lisa contacted The Uttoxeter & Cheadle Voice colour magazine and asked if she could nominate her sister for a Makeover after seeing a feature in the magazine recently. Lisa’s sister, Vicky, of Church Street, Uttoxeter, has endured an horrendous and truly emotional couple of years. In 2007 she lost her beautiful baby boy Callum to cot death when he was just 12 weeks old. Vicky’s world was torn apart and the pain and anguish of that dreadful day will never leave her. She was absolutely over the moon when she found out she was pregnant again last year and perhaps happy days would soon be on the horizon. Sadly, Vicky’s joy was short-lived when her baby daughter Millie was prematurely stillborn in April of this year. So sister Lisa was determined to do something special for Vicky’s birthday and The Voice wholeheartedly agreed to create a Makeover she would never forget with the help of top Uttoxeter businesses Salon 14, of Church Street, and Essential Clothing Company of The Maltings.

Vicky told The Voice: ‘It was absolutely amazing, I was treated like a queen. I don’t normally wear make-up so it was a real treat when Salon 14 gave me the 5 star treatment. They were fantastic and my hair looked stunning. ‘Essential Clothing Company asked me to pick 4 outfits for the makeover and I was spoilt for choice, they had so many clothes to choose from. It was tremendous. ‘The Uttoxeter & Cheadle Voice photographer made me feel so at ease and he was so professional, it was just like being snapped for a top glossy magazine. ‘All the make-up and hair design were provided free of charge by Salon 14 and Essential Clothing Company incredibly asked me to choose one of the 4 outfits, including jewellery and shoes, and let me keep it!’ Vicky and her sister enjoyed the whole Makeover Day and the 25th birthday treat proved to be one to remember. ‘I gave everybody who helped me in my makeover hugs and kisses, especially my dear sister Lisa, ‘said Vicky. ‘I have had a very rough time over the last couple of years and this has really cheered me up. Myself and my sister are very close and she knows what I have been through and it was a lovely thing to do for me but she is that type of girl. ‘I will never forget this birthday present and I would sincerely like to thank Angela Clinton, Manager at Essential Clothing Company, Esther Brown and Laura Mills of Salon 14 (photograph above) and of course The Uttoxeter & Cheadle Voice.’ Let The Uttoxeter & Cheadle Voice take your business to 13,000 local homes. The good old days

I received a fantastic response from readers over The Good Old Days photos in the last issue of The Voice - many thanks for taking the time to pick up the phone. The Rocester FC team was recognised as: Keith Hibberd, Ivan Ash, Pete Swanwick, John Harrison, Roy Morley, Alf Blood, Gilbert Egerton, Ken Green. Front row Brian Walker, Peter Walker, Graham Dixon, Brian Ferneyhough, Frank Hitchen. The photo was taken after Rocester had won the Uttoxeter Challenge Cup. Alistair Thursfield’s photo certainly rattled memories of a lot of readers who said it was taken on April 13th 1961 and the team was called Uttoxeter Wanderers which included youngsters who at the time were playing friendly games but in subsequent years went on to play in the old Uttoxeter Saturday League. Most of the early team went to Alleyne’s Grammar School in Uttoxeter and on this occasion they played and and beat a team called Redfern Athletic from Derby 5-2. The goalscorers were Brian Cox 2, Mick Harper, Mick Danks and Alistair (goalkeeper) who stepped up and scored a penalty! Tony Slater is believed to be living in Alsager, Graham Forrester in Spath, Terry Shand in Uttoxeter and Mick Harper in Ashbourne. The two Cheadle football ‘stars’ were Dave Shufflebotham with wife Brenda and Nigel Titterton and wife Marcia. The lady enjoying a great night out is Tina Heinich and the other photo included Carol Charlesworth and Carol Woolley.

Povey’s People By Radio Stoke’s Owd Grandad Piggott Each month Radio Stoke’s Owd Grandad Piggott (Alan Povey) will write a unique insight into our local life and its many characters. His infectious, humorous slant on people provides a different and unusual mix which hopefully will bring a warm smile to the faces of our readers.
This month: HAROLD AT THE CARAVAN ‘Ah’d like t’die up ‘ere’, Harold Collier announced, plonking himself on the little wooden seat under the front window of his caravan that occupied the pitch next to ours. ‘That’s a bit of a morbid thing to say’, I remarked, joining him on the little seat that creaked in protest. ‘What brings this on?’ ‘It wunner be s’far t’ go’, said Harold pragmatically. He withdrew his pipe and filled it with some villainous looking twist. True, the hills of the beautiful county of Derbyshire were a lot nearer to heaven than where he and I had spent the biggest part of our lives. ‘Tha knaws – t’ mere thowt o’ peggin’ aht used fritten me ter death…‘, he said applying a match to the tobacco and tamping it down with a black forefinger - ‘but it dunner mayther me ner mower. He sucked hard on the pipe and puffed out a cloud of thick green smoke. Across the valley, the evening sun was setting in a massive red orb over the hill above Youlgreave and the pines on the green plantation opposite were turning black with the onset of night. On the Limestone Way towards Robin Hoods Stride, a curlew called and Harold and I, with assistance from a couple of cans of Pedigree, let the peace of the evening wash over us. In fifteen minutes, the bell ringers would start their Tuesday evening practice and the lights of the village would wink on. Voices and the barking of dogs began be heard as people walked their animals along Bradford Dale and down to the village of Alport. For the hundredth time, I realised that Jill and I along with Harold and Norma, his wife, had the two best pitches in the county. ‘Ar Nudge worries abaht stuff tha knaws…‘, said Harold, removing his pipe and sending a jet of brown spittle into the harebells that nodded gaily to us all through the summer. ‘’Er worries abaht t’kids, ‘er worries abaht this funny wart as ‘ers got on t’side o’ ‘er chops…‘er worries abaht ar Danny losin’ ‘is job….’er gets on mar bloody nerves!’ Despite being born seventy miles apart, I shared a great camaraderie with Harold. I was a born and bred Stokie, reared among the bottle ovens and coal mines of North Staffordshire with a working class ancestry - Harold was a dour Sheffielder who had spent all his working life in close proximity to a steel furnace, gravitating to the pub at lunchtime with a dozen of his mates to write off ten pints of

beer and sweating it off in the afternoon back at the furnace. He and ‘ar Nudger’ had reared six children in a terraced house fighting poverty, damp, illness and come out on the other side. The children, most of whom had done well for themselves, had pooled together, bought their parents a caravan and paid three years rent in advance on the site that it occupied. This had turned out to be a priceless gift to their parents. After Harold’s retirement, they still inhabited the same terraced house, but the siblings had ceremoniously scrapped his rickety old Volvo and replaced it with a small modern car. Harold and Norma’s life changed beyond their wildest dreams. ‘Ah miss t’owd Volvo tha knaws’, said Harold ruminatively as he chewed the stem of his pipe. He jabbed a thumb at the newish little entity that squatted by his caravan. ‘Ah call it t’oxo tin’, he said ‘It’s got abaht as much steel in it’. ‘At least it’s got a floor Harold’, I said in defence of the little Peugeot. Wayne shows his Checkley cricket club’s commitment historic victory L By Tom Holdcroft
By Andy Carr (Club Captain) hen Nigel very kindly invited me to write an article on Checkley’s season and winning ‘The Talbot Cup’, I could have very easily written a book on the “Ups and Downs” on what proved to be a very tasking season both on and off the cricket field. And on that note I would sincerely like to thank my wife Sam for putting up with some very different mood swings. But moving on. What a special way to end that difficult season. Firstly from a player’s prospective to get through to any final is a great achievement, as it is a matter of fact that the majority of League players only dream of playing in such prestigious finals such as ‘The Talbot Cup’. It seems to be more fitting and meaningfull as the 6 teams we were drawnagainst were all positioned higher in the League than ourselves. Although our Professional on the day of the final Riffatullah Mohmand (pictured in action above) rose to the occasion, and produced what many people say was the best batting performance ever seen at Four Trees, our own lads must also be very proud of themselves, because each and everyone who played in the previous rounds put in some outstanding performances along the way. All of our players have very strong connections and understanding with each other, and that is what I try to take out onto the field. I’m a firm believer that if you have a happy dressing room with no corners, team building and performances will easily follow. As for winning the cup. It means so much to everyone at Checkley. Players, club officials, members, Checkley CC skipper Andy Carr proudly holds The Talbot Cup sponsors, and general supporters. Over the last two seasons the members at Checkley have stuck together like glue over their disciplinary matters, proving that the backbone of Checkley Cricket Club is extremely strong and determined, and to end a season on such a high note, gives the club a great platform to build on for the 2010 season and onwards. In the Chairman’s absence I would like to take this opportunity in thanking everyone who helped, both before and on the day of the final, create and set such high standards as we did, which I know did not go unnoticed throughout the cricketing fraternity. We should all be very proud of what we produced both on and off the cricket field that day, which proved to be one of the most memorable days we have encountered at Four Trees. I would also like to thank all of the local support on the day of the final. And I sincerely hope that both the cricket and the facilities we have to offer at Checkley will make your return just as enjoyable in the future. Once again Congratulations to all. The Voice would sincerely like to thank Carl Jackson for the photographs supplied to us
W
eek Town Football Club manager Wayne Johnson – who was raised and still lives in the Cheadle area – is currently reaping the benefits of the most difficult decision of his footballing life. The 35-yearold elected midway through last season to turn his back on a playing career, which had seen him reach the First Round proper of the FA Cup with Newcastle Town and play more than 250 games for the Blues, in order to concentrate solely on the manager’s role at Harrison Park. Twelve matches without a win at the start of the 2008/09 season convinced Johnson to take decisive action. Since then, the fortunes of Leek Town Football Club have improved dramatically. Just five defeats in 27 matches took Wayne’s team to the brink of the playoffs last The Uttoxeter & Cheadle Voice has sponsored Leek term before starting the current Town FC Manager Wayne Johnson’s kit for this campaign in fine style, setting season as part of their commitment to support the the pace in the Unibond League local community. Division One South. The secret to Wayne’s immediate success since swapping the pitch for the technical area is simple – the buck stops with him. He said: “I had to make a decision to either let it carry on and probably end up getting sacked - or pack in playing, do the manager’s job myself and do it my own way. “A lot of the players weren’t happy with the coaching that was going on and I probably let it go on for a little bit too long. The 12 games without a win leading up to my retirement as a player on 15th November put us second-bottom of the league. Our form from that day has been excellent and – having kept the same squad together – things are so far going very well during the current campaign. I have definitely been by far a better manager since making that tough decision because I have gained more respect from the players. I have nobody to hide behind and whatever I say goes.” Wayne’s life in football began as a junior, largely sitting on the bench for Kingsley Juniors, before moving to Cheadle Athletic from the age of 11. He began playing senior football with Boltons and Cheadle Rovers at the age of 16 before testing himself at a higher level with Ball Haye Green. Also staying loyal to his roots by turning out on a Sunday for Cheadle United, Wayne had just played in the final of the Sentinel Sunday Cup when the opportunity arose to break into semi-professional football with Newcastle Town. It was during the last of his four seasons at Lyme Valley that Wayne had the opportunity of playing in the First Round Proper of the most prestigious cup competition in the world of club football - the FA Cup. The tie was against the Football League’s oldest club, Notts County, and Wayne remembers the occasion as much for the media circus as the game itself. “We watched the draw live on the BBC and from then on, for two weeks before the game, it was absolutely amazing,” he recalls. “Everybody wanted to know us, we were in demand for interviews and we even had a TV appearance. I was determined not to let the occasion get to me though and if anything I felt a bit lethargic by the time of the kick-off. You can’t take it all in at the time, but I’ve got the videos, the photographs, the match-day programme and all of the memorabilia which is good to look back on now and again. It was a good game and we certainly held our own. They should have had a player sent off just after halftime with the score at 0-0. They got the break and went on to beat us 2-0, but it was an excellent day.” Although Leek Town had shown an earlier interest, it was with Witton Albion and later Congleton Town that Wayne enjoyed his first taste of football at Unibond level. When the move to Harrison Park did come, it turned out to be Wayne’s longterm home. Six years as a player were followed by his current role as manager of the club. Having established a strong relationship with the club, its supporters and his players, Wayne is now focussed, not only on achieving promotion to the top level of Unibond football, but also on keeping them there whilst maintaining a stable financial footing. “I think they will have a statue built of me if I get them back up,” he laughed. “But that is the ambition, the club is building gradually and I believe that 80% of the current squad have got what it takes to succeed in the league above. You never know what is round the corner, but I am focussing on doing the best I can for Leek Town in every game. In football you can have four bad games that will put everyone on your back, or in the same number of games you can have other clubs wanting you to manage them. “But this is a great job, Leek is the biggest non-league club in the area, and I have no intention of leaving.”

Razzer’s Hall of Fame October Team
Uttoxeter & Cheadle Voice Editor and Publisher Nigel Titterton enjoyed playing in local football circles for 20 years and during that time he came into contact, sometimes literally, with lots of fantastic players! There have been so many brilliant local footballers over the years in our area and I would also like to say that there have been great managers too such as Mick Harper (Wheatsheaf Athletic), Alan Smith (Rocester & Cheadle Utd), Ivan Harvey (Cheadle Town FC), Alan Beaman (Rocester FC), Paul Ogden (Leek Town FC), Johnny Smith (Stallington Hospital FC), and many more. The managers I have mentioned all had different approaches to how to get the very best out of their players, some could give the ‘hairdrier’ half time team talk, some would deliver the arm around the player with a quiet word scenario. The one thing they had in common is that they were winners and coming second was simply not an option! In this month’s soccer team I would like to select players who have secured a piece of my football memory bank through various different avenues and I hope local football readers will remember their smiling faces and twinkle toes in an era when local football was the number one sport to play:
MALCOLM BROTHERTON Uttoxeter Town A really good goalkeeper who was a rock and an excellent shot stopper.
A very strong, competitive player who was a formidable part of the back four. Steve knew his strengths and played to them – and that included lots of juicy tackles on worried forwards!
KEN BROWN Abbots Bromley FC A real workhorse and always involved in the game for 90 minutes.
Back Four: KEVIN BARRY (Rocester FC) A wonderfully gifted footballer, Kevin could play in any position and he would be sensational. Never made an enemy on the soccer pitch because he was a true gentleman. PETER ‘CURLY’ JOHNSON (Cheadle Utd) A defender very much in the John Terry mould, a leader who could inspire his team-mates to victory by the way he bravely performed on he pitch. Great header of the ball, fine reader of the game, Curly had it all. BARRY HULTON (Rocester FC) A magnificent player who gave Rocester years and years of tremendous service. Barry played in a majestical way, always seeming to have lots of time to play the ball and the timing of his tackling was amazing. What a great centre back pairing, Hult and Curly!! KENNY ELLIOTT (Cheadle Utd, Rocester, Stallington Hospital, Cheadle Town FC, most clubs in Staffordshire!) A footballing career that spanned over 35 years is true testimony to the fitness and enthusiasm for the game of Kenny. Every position in the team could be filled by this truly inspirational man who played local football well into his 40’s. Right wing: DAVE BEVANS (Cheadle Town FC). Stepped into his former Stoke City FC dad Stan’s shoes brilliantly, showing the same tremendous speed darting down the wing. Gave full backs a torrid time because once he had gone past them that was it!
LEON SCALLON Uttoxeter Town
STEVE SWANWICK (Captain) Uttoxeter Town
STEVE BLOOD Rocester FC
KEITH RUSHTON (Cheadle Utd) A fantastic guy who was ultra consistent and a rock behind his back four. Always had a laugh and a joke and in those days you had to if you were a Stoke City supporter like he was!
Classy defender who oozed class and always looked as though he had plenty of time, the sign of a top player.
Tremendous ability and a great reader of the game.
GORDON RICHARDSON Rocester FC Gordon was ultra competitive and a defender who would not let you pass! With Smelly and Bloody in the back four, prisoners would not be taken!
Another real grafter and real team player, Jimmy would give this team that bit of steel in midfield.
GARY PLANT (Cheadle Town FC) Imported from Leek by Town committee man and local businessman Derek Williamson, Gary possessed a wonderful football brain and his passing ability was second to none. The little ginger haired midfielder could split a defence in two with just one pass I’ve heard the ginger hair is no more!! Inside Left:
RAY SNAPE Uttoxeter Boys Club
JIMMY SHAW Bamfords FC
Inside Right:
Ray had a great right foot and was a tremendous crosser of the ball.
JEFF DYCHE Uttoxeter Town A hard player who let his opponents know he was there! Tough but fair.
LEON CARNEY (Rocester FC, Cheadle Utd FC) A terrier in midfield, a bundle of energy with a blue touch paper which used to ignite quite regularly! Leon was every manager’s dream in the centre of midfield because he could sort the opposition out single-handedly. He would allow Gary Plant the space to strut his stuff - that’s for certain! Left Wing: STEVE BAILEY (Stallington Hospital FC) Steve had the Georgie Best look, long hair, long sideburns, and terrific pace. The wide expanses of the Stallington pitch played right into his hands and his exemplorary finishing talent meant he would bag you a hatful of goals each season. Centre Forwards:
TEDDY BRINDLEY Bamfords FC
JOHN HEATON Cheadle United FC A top striker who always worked hard up front for the team. John boasted a terrific scoring record.
Leading the front line, Teddy was a real handful for defenders and his tremendous heading talents caused havoc.
We have inserted one football club each player has performed for. Obviously, many have played for several clubs in their careers.
38
GEORGE BYATT (Cheadle Utd FC) A deadly goalscorer who led the line superbly, George was always in the right place at the right time in the penalty area. Poaching was the name of the game and George excelled at it. COLIN KERSLEY (Cheadle Town FC) Terrific speed, fantastic goalscoring ability, Colin was the Town’s talisman. He was a superb striker for season after season and went he went onto play at a higher level with Macclesfield Town the goals still went in.

On and off the field By Alan Smith Alan Smith has enjoyed a lifetime of sport in the Cheadle and Uttoxeter areas. Here Alan delves into his memory bank to write his unique brand of humour on colourful sports and life comments with memories of past and present which we hope readers will enjoy... hope I can amuse our readers with this column and get your minds thinking about my other points which I think you will agree beggar belief! I will start though by giving you my opinion of the cricket season both nationally and locally, starting with our national side. Well we just about retrieved The Ashes, debatable whether the best side won the series but really I don’t care against them Aussies. They can say they had their injuries with probably their main strike bowler Brett Lee sidelined for the series but then I suppose we had Kevin Pieterson out for nearly all the matches. We had a little luck as you need but we’ll take it. That match at Cardiff was crucial, as I think that we lost that one the momentum would have firmly been in the Aussies favour. But that match is now history and we learned from it, Prior became a good wicketkeeper/batsman, Broad a potential all-rounder, not a Flintoff by a long way yet, and Swann has displaced Monty as the senior spinner. The introduction of Trott was a belated masterstroke and I think he could give us that proper test batsman at 3 or 4 capable of batting for session after session. And Strauss had a series he can be proud of although I think we may have seen the last test appearance against England on these shores by that fantastic Aussie Ricky Ponting but aren’t they grooming an excellent replacement in Michael Clarke. But this Winter we travel to South Africa in what will be a really difficult series if we can come home victors over those lot, yes that’s the other lot I can’t stand nearly as much as the Aussies. We can say without worry things are going in the right direction as regards our test programme. As to the shorter game there’s a lot to do, but I’ll finish on the national team by asking you the question Bopara is a legend in his own head or not? Well Ravi get the hat size down a bit, you’ve not showed anyone anything yet. On the local scene a couple of weeks ago my wife and I went along to watch Checkley CC play Stone in the final of The Talbot Cup and largely thanks to a magnificent knock on the day by the Checkley professional they became new holders of the Talbot Cup. Well done to everyone at the club!
I
Some reward suppose for another somewhat controversial season but I had also been to Checkley a few nights earlier to partake in a question and answer night which a good friend of mine, Alan Hudson, perhaps at the time of the match he played against West Germany for England the best player in the world and easily the best we’ve had at Stoke City was answering questions on his time at Stoke and his love affair with the club and his undoubted respect of the manager at that time Tony Waddington. He reminded me of the time I got him fit for a game when he was suffering with a neck problem. At those times we would have the occasional night having a beer or two, well this evening he was struggling with a neck problem. Well I told him I could fix it for him and lifted him bear-hug style and ‘Wala’ click, I’d cured him! Black Magic he said!! He also told us all on that night at Checkley how in his opinion if Waddo had kept Farmer in goal and not signed Peter Shilton they would have won the league. That is the toughest player at Stoke was not Denis Smith but Alan Bloor and Huddy’s understanding with Jimmy Greenhoff was just a natural understanding that happens very occasionally with two great players. Other local cricket sides I suppose can say that it’s still work in progress. But I’m sure some of them are really quite worried, I’ve watched local cricket and I must say that the standard has declined a hell of a lot in the last few years. And I said I’d never say that but I have to be honest. There doesn’t seem to be any characters about in the game which was brought to my attention whilst I was watching that final at Checkley and meeting up with an old team mate of mine John Clowes, ex Stoke City footballer and captain of Denstone’s cricket club side. He reminded me of the Jack Hutchinson Final we played at the Racecourse ground against, I can’t remember, but we won the two night final and on the second night we celebrated as you do with small amounts of beer but very often! And during the celebrations a challenge was thrown out by Mark Orme to a race, to run all way around the horse track. John our captain and champion took him up on it. Well imagine about 11.30pm, pitch black and the word ‘go’ was heard.
Well John shot off followed by Mark, when both had gone a few hundred yards they could no longer be seen. We decided it would be about 15 minutes before they covered the full course and returned to the comfort of the clubhouse. But low and behold within 5 minutes Mark had returned and all were amazed. Well done Mark, how have you managed that so quickly? He said he only got as far as the first hurdle and he couldn’t make it any farther. I think the race terminology is ‘pulled up’ isn’t it. Ten minutes or so later John came panting into the clubhouse, on seeing Mark he did well to control himself as Mark was casually enjoying his pint and John was absolutely breathless and shattered! And to this day I don’t think Mark gave him his tenner! Fabulous characters though. I hope you will excuse me now for informing you of the way British justice works. In March on returning from my honeymoon I was burgled at my butty van. A music CD and a quantity of pop were missing. The thief, however, conveniently left a telltale trace of blood near to where my electric griddle and deep fat fryer had apparently been ripped out and taken. The DNA obtained from the blood after what seemed ages to me led to the arrest of a male person. He was brought to court and to my utter amazement, if not annoyance, at the end of the day it seems that the Court considered there was only sufficient evidence to convict on the theft of the pop. The gentleman said someone had broken in before him and stole the electrical equipment! Are you laughing? But stop it, I’m serious, yes someone broke in before him but he cut his hands lifting a few cans of pop. They fined him £60 and awarded me £15 damages. By the way I had to replace the equipment and the van was closed for a day. I worked out that the cost to me was approximately £1,000 with lost income. But that moan out of the way, some good news on my search for my family in the USA Well very sadly my chance to meet up with my father will not happen as he passed away in 1989 but the good news is that my sister wrote to me and hopefully is forwarding photographs to me. I am excited, I think I shall try to find out more e.g. what country were my ancestors from, were they slaves, there’s a good chance of Africa, and I tell Donna my wife nothing has changed! See you soon, I will tell you then about something that has really shocked and excited me and could quite amaze a lot of people! Smithy
Uttoxeter Road Runners in action Well done Duncan ! Phil Pugh also ran Bramshall in the Under 17’s Mens group in 13m 15s giving him 2nd place. Well done Phil In the adult sections our only runner was Clive Baggaley in the 5M Veteran Men category. Clive’s time of 35m 17s earned him 1st vet 60 place.

Bramshall Cross Country (Sun 27th September) Under exceptionally dry conditions and with little water in Picknalls Brook, this was a relatively mild start to this year’s Cross Country season. Races catered for all ages ranging from the Under 11’s to Veterans over 60 which made for a good family event. In addition there was a Fun Run in which it was good to see Club members Ian Salt being led by his son Ben and Grahame Cope trailing behind his sons Charlie and Dylan. Grahame put his poor run down to having run the Macclesfield Half Marathon earlier in the day and Ian claiming he was injured!! Well done to Ben, Charlie and Dylan. Our new junior Cross Country runner, Duncan Parsonage, son of Steve parsonage, was running for the first time in the Club vest in the Under 13 Boy’s category. He ran really well covering the 1.75 miles in 10m 54s.
Macclesfield Half Marathon (Sun 27th Sept) Report by Grahame Cope Macclesfield half starts off quite sedately and then at 5 miles we had a series of long climbs up to about 8.5 miles and then steeper 2 mile climb at about 10 miles. Super conditions and a well organised event which finished on the Macclesfield AC running track. It had almost 900 finishers and I finished in 107th, and was pleased with my time of 1.35.09. A good challenge but not as demanding as Leek.

The Cream of the Crop By Mick Harper Continued from previous issue of The Voice...
aking up the midfield trio on the left side I would have to pick Terry Salt, a real ‘Rolls Royce’ of a footballer. Nobody could knock him off the ball as he was as strong as an ox, had a real presence that set him apart from most of his contemporaries and it was obvious why his services had been ‘courted’ by leading Potteries’ sides throughout his career. Now the front men vital to the success of any team. In the ‘Sheaf’s formative years the likes of Max Stubbs, Dave Fearn and the long serving Tony Dronzek scored the goals which helped to give the ‘Sheaf a name in local football and along with many other unsung heroes they provided the platform for those who followed eager to join a club in the ascendancy. In later years, Keith Brassington terrorised defences in the Burton League with his predatory
M
instincts and he was the club’s leading scorer in all five of the seasons he played scoring 42 during his best campaign. Graham Leggett was so quick he could give defenders a torrid time especially if he ran at them which he frequently did and he rattled home 31 goals in the same season as Brassington’s highest tally. John Berrisford was primarily a wide man but he took great delight in scoring which he did on exactly 50 occasions during his long service. Willie McCombe was as hard as they come and any defender attempting to mark him knew they had been in a game. He was excellent in the air and there were a good number of headers amongst the 28 goals he notched in his best season. Despite these players impressive credentials I am unable to fit any of them into my front three which would start with Vin Bloor who registered 171 goals in 144 games for the club. Vin always seemed to be in the right area at the right time and he used to almost caress the ball over the line on some occasions. A high percentage of his goals came from in or around the six yard box and the best way of describing him would be to call him ‘the ultimate predator’. Alongside Vin would be
another goal machine of an entirely different style but equally effective. Any club who signed Mick Collins knew they were going to get goals from him and he didn’t let me down with 33 in his first season and 30 the next. Superb in the air he could hit the ball with tremendous power and if it sat up and he had the opportunity of a volley he was in his element. To complete the line up in a wide role I would have to go for John Welsh. He was quick, could turn on a sixpence and would cut in and score goals for fun. In his first season he even outscored Vin with 43 against a mere 42 from the latter – what a fearsome attacking trio they would make! So there it is my best Wheatsheaf team from the 15 years I managed the Club. The two substitutes, both extremely close to being named in the team, would be Alan ‘Wiggy’ Whieldon and Keith Brassington. And as a final indulgence I would have the two other players closest to selection Owen Morris and Paul Esplin on standby. I apologise to any of the excellent footballers who played for the Wheatsheaf during those far off days whom I have not mentioned as they all played their part in what was a great adventure. And finally congratulations to Nigel for his perception in naming so many of my best team in his Hall of Fame selection.
Wheatsheaf Athletic at Uttoxeter Racecourse – 19th May 1975 Back Row: Mick Harper (Manager), Bill Shaw, John Welsh, Les Tavernor, George Line, John Charlesworth (Captain), Mick Ring, Steve Blood, Vin Bloor. Front Row: Brian Ferneyhough, Pete Douglas, Leon Hibberd, Stuart Macfarlane, Roger Croft, Brian Dodd. The ‘Sheaf were undefeated in the Uttoxeter League that season only dropping one point and the League Championship Shield on the left was part of the Treble completed with the League Cup and the Charity Shield.
The ‘Utcheter’ and beyond Football Diaries from 1979 onwards... By Tim Leech, our Uttoxeter man exiled in the Potteries am happy to have been asked to take a trip down memory lane and give a few memories of the many characters that I have had the pleasure to come across in the local area. Everyone who has come across me knew that I was of limited ability, I’m being kind to myself on that one but I was a committed, no nonsense type of player but very much up for the crack at every opportunity. I had the pleasure of managing Uttoxeter F.C, the last Saturday day team that we had in the town during the early nineties and we had a lot of success, albeit at a junior standard of football but more importantly we all played for each other and had some of the best sporting memories on and off the field you could have wished for. I will recall some of these over the next few issues. The lad’s all called me Roachy; the reason being I once scored a hat trick in an important game, that feat being rarer that a Derby win but the Burton Mail’s report had the following headline. “Kim Roach hat trick seals win for Uttoxeter”. On a more recent note, I thought I had misread the local paper, Rocester losing 9 -0 to Barwell, these guys are classed as semi pro being paid to play a game that many people, like myself played for free and for the love of the game. I hope they are all hanging their heads in shame, A disgraceful score line, I don’t know any of the

names playing now, where are the Uttoxeter, Cheadle and Ashbourne lads in the side. On a heavy scoreline theme, I remember playing for Elkes F.C; on a Saturday in the Mid Staffs league during the mid 1980’s. We were playing the Garth Hotel from Stafford in a Staffs cup game. They duly arrived on a mini bus, all the players in tracksuits and carried out a rigorous work out before the kick off. We thought we were in for a hell of a game. We duly won the game 26 – 0. The following week, Manager Brendon Phillips promptly dropped Dave Kirk who had scored 6 goals in the match against the Garth F.C team, his pearls of wisdom being “My granny could have scored against them”. I would be interested to hear if anyone else locally has been dropped after scoring a double hat trick. Dave’s Brother Ian, the tough as teak defender, whose second touch was a tackle has a different claim to fame. He had and I am sure still has the smelliest feet I have ever known. He used to get changed on his own, no one would go near him, the old Elkes changing rooms had holes in the roof and most of the windows were broken, giving some form of much needed ventilation. Elkes was one of many teams who had very little or limited changing facilities, the best known in Uttoxeter being Westland’s Road, a pitch that was always playable but you had to get
changed into your kit in your own cars. I don’t think you would see David Beckham and co putting up with that in the modern era of pampered poseurs and anyone who made the mistake of being in the same car as Ian Kirk never made the same mistake again. Those feet, I can still smell them to this day. Last memory for this issue, I wont name the guy on this occasion, I was again playing at Elkes F.C on a very muddy pitch and a typical wet and windy Utch’ Sunday morning in a forgettable game. A player from each side made an aerial challenge for the ball and my team mate remained on all fours in the middle of the pitch with his head bowed. The ref asked if he was okay, to be informed by the player he was not because he had lost his eye, the ref’ told him to stop messing about and get on with the game, the player duly raised his head to reveal a gaping hole. The players glass had had popped out, the game was duly halted with all 22 players and ref’ looking of the missing eye. Eventually this was found and a quick wipe with the magic sponge, the eye was put back in place and game resumed as normal. I bet you didn’t see that one coming, the player in question certainly didn’t. Regards Roachy

See you at the far post! By Mick Cullerton ollowing on from stories about managers I have played for, this month is about ‘the best manager England never had!’ – in his own words, Brian Clough. He was impatient when he wanted something but patient when building a team. A man of great contrasts who did not suffer fools gladly, he has been described in books and newspapers as dogmatic, arrogant, confrontational, brash, big headed and a bully. He could be all of these things but professional footballers who have been around the block do not react to bullies very well. In the time I was at Derby County I can’t remember many occasions when he raised his voice or swore at any player! He would be straight to the point and tell you in no uncertain manner exactly what you were doing wrong and what he expected you to do to put it right. This was usually followed by Peter Taylor sitting down next to the player telling him what a good player he was and that Brian really rated him. Good cop, bad cop routine. I believe that he was the youngest man ever to get an FA coaching badge but I believe that his philosophy was to sign players that fitted into how he wanted his team to play. Asa Hartford was signed for a lot of money but in Brian Clough’s eyes he did not fit in, so he sold him after 2 weeks! When he arrived at the Baseball Ground Derby County were a team struggling in Division 2. When he left they were top of Division 1 (now the Premier League) and national news. I’ve always thought that his outbursts were planned, most of his outrageous statements coming out if Derby and later Forest lost, this sparing his players from bad publicity. I know the Derby Telegraph reporter had to be very careful what he wrote about the Derby players! When I contracted glandular fever and jaundice I was waiting at the Baseball Ground for a lift to the hospital as I had been advised not to drive. Brian Clough saw me and said that he would take me to the hospital. His car was blocked in and so he jumped into the chairman’s car and drove me to the hospital. I asked where the chairman was. He said ‘He’s probably plotting my downfall in a board meeting but your health is more important than a board meeting.’ When we arrived back at the Baseball ground the chairman was going crackers. Cloughie just said typically ‘Mr Chairman are you telling me that you put being late for a board meeting before the health of one of our players?’ he then told me to make a pot of tea and take it to his office. He then just

walked away... At that time most people thought that the first thing Cloughie said to you was ‘get your hair cut young man’ but that was not what he asked me. He asked me 4 questions and I knew that if I was not honest with him he would find out. He asked: Do you drink – I said yes. Do you smoke – I said no Do you gamble – I said a little Do you have a girlfriend – I said yes. I believe the reason he asked his players these questions was because he felt he could handle players problems as long as they did the business on the pitch. When I had glandular fever I used to walk down to the Baseball Ground for a brine bath and very often Cloughie would be in the next bath smoking a cigar and reading the morning paper. I had many conversations with him from the Labour Party, of which he was a big supporter, to putting the rest of the world to rights and his love of Frank Sinatra. I told him about Jock Stein saying that fear made players tired and in that respect they were very similar as both Derby and Forest in later years always went into games fearing no one. The other difference between Cloughie and other managers was that he kept players fresh by knowing when to train and when to rest. When you went to training you never knew what you would be doing. Sometimes it would be a walk in the park if you had lost or a hard session if you had won. Beneath the bluster I always suspected insecurity in Brian Clough but he kept it well hidden. I suppose it was due to him having to finish playing so early due to injury, That could also have been the reason why he went out of his way to keep you involved if you were ill or injured. One morning when the 2nd team were practicing corners and free kicks he came over unusually and took the session. He asked who took the corners and I said I did. He then asked me where I could put them and I said I could them wherever he wanted me to. His reply was ‘OK smart arse, first one near post, second one far post and the third one on Tony Rhodes head in the middle.’ I did all three as he requested and he said ‘session over. Make sure you do that in the games, there’s no point in asking you to do something you can’t do.’ That weekend Aston Villa were knocked out of the FA Cup and Tommy Docherty sent his 1st team to play Derby Reserves at the Baseball Ground. During the course of the game I was about to take a corner when a voice boomed from the directors box ‘three’ – as
requested I put the ball right onto Tony Rhodes’ head and we were a goal up. He was the first manager who ever asked me if I could do something all the others told me what to do. I asked him if he ever told Alan Hinton where to cross the ball and he said ‘Don’t be daft, he’s forgotten more about crossing the ball than I’ll ever know!’ His old fashioned homilies were well known ‘It only takes a second to score a goal’ ‘If God had wanted the ball played in the air he would have given us wings and not grass.’ ‘A manager’s most difficult job is to keep six who like you away from six who don’t.’ All still relevant today. All I can say is that in his pomp he was as good as any English manager of the time. To win the European Cup with Forest bears testament to that. I am not one to look back and have regrets about the past but I do have one regret in football. I went to see Cloughie to see where I stood as I had scored loads of goals in the reserve team. His reply was short and sweet telling me that if Denis Law and Francis Lee became available he would sign them and as
I still had 12 months left on my contract to be patient. I told him that I did not want to be a reserve team player and that he had never played me in my best position as a striker but on the wing. I should have been patient, especially as I was still recovering from glandular fever. With the impatience of youth I did leave however. A few years later he came to the Port Vale v Peterborough game and I scored 2 goals as a striker. He sent a message to me through our then coach Reg Birks saying that I was right and had been playing out of position, keep going and prove him wrong. His ability to get very ordinary players to win league and cups along with teams disciplinary records were second to none. That’s unusual but he used to tell referees: ‘Don’t you bother with my lot, I will deal with them.’ In my opinion the book and film about Brian Clough were a complete joke and a compete injustice to the man who deserves recognition amongst the best managers of all time. See you at the Far Post Mick Cullerton
