Sweeney Todd 17 years old Thomas Alleyne's 6th Form student in Uttoxeter has landed one of the principal roles in Sweeney Todd to be staged at Stoke Repertory Theatre from November 9-12th. Amy Eley, of Stramshall, will be playing Johanna in the popular production which is being put on by Stoke Youth Musical Theatre Company, a charitable-run amateur company promoting the talents of young 12-21 years olds in the local area. Remembrance Concert he Royal British Legion, in association with the Uttoxeter Town Brass Band, are holding the Remembrance Concert on Saturday 13th. November, at St. Marys Parish Church, starting at 7-15 p.m. Following the success of the inaugural event in 2009, the Concert intends to impress even more this year, with performances from the Band, the Heath Chorus, and soloists Clair Stanley and Karl Harper. In addition, there will be poetry readings, nostalgic interludes and the Act of Remembrance all performed within the wonderful surroundings of the Church. We hope to make this an annual event, as the revenue last year produced a significant part of the total raised during the Poppy Appeal in Uttoxeter, when we realised in excess of ÂŁ20,000 from our efforts, and we thank the townspeople and visitors to the town for their continual goodwill. As a branch of the Nations’ leading charity providing support for HM Service people, past and present, and their families, we at RBL Uttoxeter cannot stress too strongly the need for everyone to donate, in whatever way they can, to the Poppy Appeal, which started on Saturday, 30th October, particularly in view of recent and ongoing conflicts and events. We are continually looking for volunteers who can give just a few hours of their time to assist the RBL to provide this support. Tickets for the Concert are ÂŁ6 each, or (subject to availability, ÂŁ7 each “on the door"), and were available from early October, from the following outlets in Uttoxeter: The Town Hall, High Street; Bradley House Club, Bradley Street; Tyreways, Church Street; Janda News & Off-Licence, Carter Street; Hairlines, Smithfield Road. Come and Sing
oices were raised at St. Mary's Church in Uttoxeter recently as the Uttoxeter Choral Society hosted their annual 'Come and Sing' event. Singers from all around the region joined choral society members to learn and perform excerpts from John Rutter's Feel The Spirit, a cycle of spiritual songs. Choir member, Alexandra Scanlon said, 'Rutter's Feel The Spirit is an unusual piece to feature at a 'Come and Sing' day. Most people won't have sung it before. It is a real challenge to learn a piece of music in such a short space of time, particularly when many of the singers have not sung together as a group.' Musical Director, Anthony Rose, was soon putting the 80 singers through their paces as the choir tackled four part arrangements of classic spirituals including Joshua Fit The Battle Of Jericho and When The Saints Go Marching In. Anthony's inspiring direction quickly had his scratch choir filling the church with both music and laughter. There was plenty to learn in only a few hours, but everyone managed to find the time to relax with a cup of tea and a slice of homemade cake between rehearsals. The day concluded when a soloist arrived to add the finishing touch to the choir's newly acquired repertoire in an informal performance. After the performance, Anthony Rose said, 'It's been a great day. To have so many singers come and try something new is really encouraging. Next September we are planning an even more ambitious 'Come and Sing' learning FaurĂŠ's Requiem in one afternoon and putting on an evening concert.' Choir member, Alexandra Scanlon added, 'Several members of the scratch choir have now become full members of the choral society. New members are always welcome at our rehearsals on Thursday evenings and we would be keen to have a few more men join us!' Uttoxeter Choral Society are now rehearsing the rest of Rutter's Feel the Spirit which they will be performing with full orchestra at a concert on Saturday 27th November in St. Mary's Church, Uttoxeter.

The enthusiastic audience was entertained by Linda Perry Smith soprano, Heather Gordon-Redfearn clarinet and Stephen Waterhouse piano, they played both solo and as a trio with repertoire from Mozart, Schumann, Puccini, Canteloube and others in the first half and Eric Satie, Erroll Garner, Benny Goodman, Gershwin and others in the second half, something to please all tastes.

ttoxeter had and still has many traditional craftsmen. One such a person who is deservedly worth a mention is Mr. John Finney. John ran E. G. Finney & Sons, Printers in Bridge Street Uttoxeter. The company was formerly Kelly’s Printers which moved into Bridge Street in circa 1920 from premises in High Street. Kelly’s was established in the 1800’s and used to print ‘The Uttoxeter New Era’ the weekly local paper, the forerunner to the ‘Uttoxeter Advertiser’. Jack Kelly sold the business to Mr. Ernest Finney in 1948 and his son John joined him in 1951. After his father’s retirement in 1972 John carried on the family business producing printing only by the letterpress process refusing to move into print production by the more modern Lithographic Process saying he preferred ‘proper printing’ and continued the way his father had done producing print by the old traditional method of setting all of the type by hand but using printing machines which were the first to be introduced into the town in the 1950’s which were fully automatic. John and his machine manager Mr. Richard Gosnell serviced the area producing quality print to many local businesses, schools and private customers and both were highly respected in the print trade for their skills. In 1993 John was approached by the local council and was told that they needed to compulsory purchase his property to build a new road ‘The Old Knotty Way’. The council offered to re-locate him to a new site to continue his trade but he eventually struck a deal with his long term friends M. J. Lavin & Sons the printers in High Street, Uttoxeter who purchased the goodwill and a lot of his equipment. John along with his colleague Richard also joined Lavins to assist in print production where they remained until they both retired in the mid 2000’s. Some of John’s ancient equipment still remains to this day at Lavins, where the proprietors keep it for ‘posterity’, although some of the machines can be seen in operation most days still in production for those fiddly little jobs that the modern machines can’t handle. The proprietors state that ‘They Don’t Build Machines Like This Anymore’ and they are, a real conversation piece!!!

Uttoxeter Christmas Lights ttoxeter’s Christmas Lights will be switched on at The Town Hall, High Street, at 5pm on Friday, November 26th! Celebrations commence at 4.45pm before the 5pm switch on and this year Andrew Griffiths MP and a local child will perform the official switching on ceremony. Santa will be in attendance together with one of his reindeers. Organisers are asked to bring their cameras as after the switch on, for a donation, there will be an opportunity for them to have their picture taken with Santa and his Reindeer! Uttoxeter’s Christmas Cracker night promises to be bigger and better than ever before this year. The annual festival of late-night shopping and street entertainment on Thursday December 9th will be followed by two more nights of fairground attractions on the Trinity Road car park. The three-day fair starts on Cracker Night and runs until Saturday 11th. The organisers say that moving the large fairground rides out of Market Square means there will be more family attractions in the town centre. The fair, which is always popular with teenagers, will feature more rides than before. Most town centre shops will stay open late from 6-9pm on Cracker Night itself, with prizes for the best decorated shop windows and staff in fancy dress. Vin Bradley, of Uttoxeter Lions, who organise the event, said: ‘This is great news for the town’s people and town centre traders. The town will be full of family entertainment and charity stalls, and the fairground people are really happy as they’ve got more space and more time to put on their shows.’ The Market Square will now be a centre for live performers, including a magic act, Uttoxeter Morris Men, the Town Band and singers. Some children’s rides will still be based in the square and in nearby Carter Street there will be live reindeer and donkey rides. Teenage bands will be performing in Carter Street, with clowns, a puppet show and theatre organ elsewhere in the town. There will also be a vintage fire engine display. Father Christmas will be in his traditional grotto in the Town Hall, where there will also be craft stalls. The High Street will feature mostly charity stalls. Barclays Bank are sponsoring a mince pie and mulled wine stall. Uttoxeter Lions Club president Steve Shields said: ‘Cracker has become a much-loved family event in the town, and it’s valuable to traders and charitable organisations. We hope that by extending and improving the event this year we’ve taken it to another level. I just hope everybody has a lot of fun.’

Ginny’s Gardening Guide By Uttoxeter’s Ginny Gibson o be or not to be tidy in the garden, that is the question. Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer..., Ok I will stop turning Shakespeare into a Gardening quote, but it is a good question, do you tidy your garden beyond an inch of its life or do you leave piles of tiles, brick, sticks, leaves in the garden. This is a debate that they were having recently in a gardening magazine and I was fascinated. Why, cos the ‘couch potato’ in me thinks untidy, but the ‘worried what people think’ side of me, goes for tidy. However lucky for me the untidy argument won and no, not so gardeners can put their feet up, but because things are hibernating for winter and frogs love to go into piles of bricks and tiles, hedgehogs love piles of leaves and all the bugs etc love the piles of sticks too. Let me tell you there is nothing couch potato about lugging bricks in a wheelbarrow down the garden. However it’s your decision, but try to keep a small part of your garden untidy, if you can. This time of year is all about Tulips for me, they are fussy but worth it. Make sure that the soil is well prepared, it needs a far amount of sharp sand mixed in, they need to be shaded from direct sun, but in a slightly sunny but shelter position, I did say they were fussy. The bulbs rot very easily, hence the sharp sand; the sand makes sure that the soil is free draining. Each bulb likes lots of room or they won’t put on a full show for you, so please plant them 4 – 5 inches deep and 8 – 10 inches apart, I have an old dibber that has inches marked on it for this very purpose, if when planting, you feel that they are too far apart, don’t be tempted to add another few bulbs, but remember that in spring you can plant bedding plants to fill the gaps and create the display.

Would you believe it but it is best to lift the bulbs each year and plant in a different bed, but that is a job for after they flower next year – and if you can’t do that, then feed with bone meal after flowering. My plant of the month is the Acer – one the most beautiful of the maple trees you will ever come across. The colour of the leaves changes from light greeny/yellow to orangey red and then deep red, a truly magical event at this time of year. I was always told that they do not like their feet (roots) to be wet, so again plant in well drained soil and they like partial shade and definitely out of the wind, they, like Tulips, are fussy. But if you want to go and see a breath taking displays of them do make a trip to Westonbirt Arboretum in Gloucestershire www.forestry.gov.uk/westonbirt I used to live in Bristol and every year I would go to see the avenue and glades of Acer that they have there. But if you can’t get to Bristol go to Fir Farm Nursery (01283 520331) in Scropton and Gavin or one of his knowledgeable staff will provide you with a wonderful specimen and you will also get the chance to talk to him about your ideas on how to make your own display, they can be grown in pots you see, so no excuse for not having one. My allotment tip this month was going to be from Cheadles new allotments that I saw in the local paper. I had read that Stanley Crescent allotments have been donated/created from the playing fields behind Stanley crescent. So I duly drove over to Cheadle, cos this is the Uttoxeter and Cheadle Voice, and crossed over the style and walked down the lane, only to be confronted by playing fields. At the local shop a very friendly couple out walking their white poodle said they had heard about the new
allotments but they were not dug yet but would be coming soon, so when they do arrive, can one of the plot holders ring the office and I will make the trip again. But if I had caught up with them they would have told me to start planting my Broad Beans now its November - try Green Windsor – sow in paired rows, allowing at least 23 cm between plants and 60cm between paired rows – apparently if you plant early you avoid black fly. Am going to finish with a plea to feed the birds throughout the coming months. Why, well because of Charlie (left) and Sue Udale and their lovely Jack Russell Oliver. We became friends soon after arriving in Uttoxeter because one of our puppies, Rosie, rather fancied the very cute Oliver and every evening and morning we would swap notes on dogs and birds. About a year ago, Charlie made us this great bird table (right) and explained how birds need food throughout the winter as they don’t hibernate and we have to help them survive the cold. So in honour of Oliver, who sadly isn’t with us any more, Feed the Birds - I know its not tuppence a bag any more, but you will be blessed with great activity in your garden if you do feed them. Magisterial Memories By John Glandfield Uttoxeter’s Most Charismatic Solicitor one are the days when crusty old Magistrates would preface announcing the Sentence of the Court by referring to the Defendant as a “Blaggard”, “Bounder”,” Rank Outsider” and the like. Sadly too have the days when most Defendants would have had the slightest clue, following such utterances, about what the dear old “Beak” was on about. I well recall a very forthright Lady Chairperson of Magistrates telling a persistent Offender as he left Court, “If I were your Mother I would box your ears”. That was met by an instant but, tactfully, near inaudible response from the back of the Court and as the Defendant left the room, “If you were my Mother I would have ruddy well left home.” As I am sadly lacking in the art of witty repartee I have always admired those who can instantaneously lob one back. Many years ago in the former Uttoxeter Magistrates Court – so long ago, in fact, that Police Officers used to be present to maintain order – an over protective Father, convinced that his son was at risk of unqualified persecution followed by a myriad of attendant injustices, kept butting in. Finally an exasperated Magistrate proclaimed, “One more word out of you and I shall ask the Officer to arrest you”. The Father looked pained and extended his hand in a

gesture of sublimation – clearly mock as the Old Boy was “Off” again a few seconds later only then to be greeted with the curt command from the Bench, “Officer, arrest that man”. “O.K., I’m going,” responded the Father and he promptly left the Court Room before he could be nicked. The Court had just returned to normality when the doors at the back of the room suddenly burst open followed by the return of said Father who, in conjunction with a crisp Nazi salute, announced for all present to hear, “Hitler is alive and well and living in Uttoxeter Magistrates Court. Good afternoon”. That was followed by a pronounced and smart forward nod of the head, click of the heels and a swift full turn as he left the Court never to be seen again. At least on that day. A Client of mine was cursed with a neurotic Mother who often accompanied him to Court and would announce continuously and at goodness knows how many decibels that the best thing for her son was a long prison sentence. Not terribly supportive all that were present used to think knowing, as they did, that if it were not for the Mother they and the Court would probably never have heard of her son. Anyway, one day my Client finally lost his rag, turned to his Mother and, after yelling at her “Shut up, Woman”, with one well aimed punch to her chin felled her where after
she ended up unconscious on the floor in an undignified heap. To their eternal credit in the circumstances, the Police took no action against my Client but, as they assisted the dazed Mother to her feet and then escorted her out of the building, we all heard her being warned that she would be arrested if she came back. Now that is what I call real common sense policing. Just prior to it closing and when the Authorities must have known about that, Uttoxeter Court was blessed with the addition of a purpose built Cell effectively at the cost of just such people who we are now about to trust to put the Public Finances in order! If you could make such an act more ludicrous then I would have to add that, so far as I am aware, said Cell was never actually used! Previously, and no doubt this would now offend gravely against Human Rights and so on, those in custody were handcuffed to a chair. More than once I recall, to the consternation of members of the public, a person was witnessed running down Uttoxeter High Street having patently “bonded” with a chair and being hotly pursued by a Policeman. Food on a Budget by Fiona Atkinson from Osmaston So much fruit and not sure what to do with it! (Part I) ith the fruit season at its peak, there's no question what should be the pudding of choice: fresh fruit pies of every kind highlighting local, flavour-filled goodness and in some cases home-grown. Whether you fancy a crumble topping, or a traditional short crust, nothing beats a pastry adorned with the natural sweetness of local farmersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; fruits, so now is the time to start making and stocking up the freezer. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s quintessential British pudding, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s easy to make, and we all love it. So donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t stop at apple pie or crumble â&#x20AC;&#x201C; be courageous, experiment and try something new. Everyone should know how to make a crumble â&#x20AC;&#x201C; an old faithful and very difficult to get wrong. I like to make my crumble mix changing the measurement of flour to bran flour with porridge oats and brown sugar for a healthier option. You can also substitute any number of ingredients for the fruit filling, such as raspberries, rhubarb, black cherries, blueberries, apricots â&#x20AC;&#x201C; even a prune and Armagnac version if youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re feeling adventurous. For the pastry, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll either make a large quantity, freezing half of it already rolled out to fit a pie top then wrapped in a freezer bag, or simply I like to have a supply of ready-made short, puff, filo and sweet short crust pastry in the freezer to keep for those emergencies. Three of my favourite pies are guaranteed to have your mouth watering, and have to be accompanied by the old faithful traditional home-made custard â&#x20AC;&#x201C; preferably made with vanilla pods, or topped with a scoop (or two) of your favourite vanilla ice cream, or even a dollop of crĂŠme fraĂŻche.

Ginger Plum Pie 1 Easy Pastry (recipe to follow)/5 cups plums, quartered and stoned/1 cup sugar, plus more for sprinkling/Âź cup flour/1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice 2-3 teaspoons ground ginger/1 teaspoon ground cinnamon/Âź teaspoon ground nutmeg/1 tablespoon butter. Preheat oven to 230ÂşC. Line a 9-inch pie plate with your pastry. Place plums, sugar, flour, lemon, ginger, cinnamon and nutmeg in a large bowl. Mix well. Pour into the pastry shell, and dot the filling with butter or margarine. Moisten the edges of the bottom crust and cover with the top crust. Finish the edges and use a sharp knife to create a few slits in the top. Sprinkle with additional sugar. Bake in a preheated oven for 15 minutes, reduce the heat to 180ÂşC and bake for an additional 45 to 60 minutes until plums are tender and crust is golden. Let stand at least 2 hours before serving. Butterscotch Banana crumbles (serves 6) Knob of butter/8 large bananas, peeled, halved
lengthways and sliced into 3 and 2 tbsp caster sugar For the butterscotch sauce: 60g butter/125g soft light brown sugar/6 tbsp golden syrup/6 tbsp double cream For the pecan crumble: 150g self-raising flour/35g caster sugar/40g light muscovado sugar/110g chilled butter, cubed/ 90g pecans, roughly chopped/50g blanched roasted hazlenuts, roughly chopped Preheat the oven to 200ÂşC. For the sauce, put the butter, sugar, syrup and a pinch of salt in a pan over a low heat. Dissolve slowly, then stir to make sure the sugar has dissolved. Turn off the heat and stir through the cream. Pour into a jug, cover the surface with cling film and allow to cool. For the topping, place the flour and sugars in a bowl and rub in the butter with your fingertips, until the mixture forms large clumps. Stir in the nuts. For the bananas, heat a large frying pan with a knob of butter over a very high heat. Sprinkle the banana pieces with the caster sugar and add to the pan. Sear quickly on each side for just a few seconds. Lay the banana pieces in 6 x 200ml shallow overproof dishes. Pour over the butterscotch. Top with the crumble and bake for 15 minutes until crisp, golden and bubbling. Easy Pastry 2½ cups flour/1 teaspoon salt/1 teaspoon sugar /2 sticks unsalted butter or 1 cup non-dairy margarine, chilled and cut into pieces/4 tablespoons ice cold water, plus more as needed. Mix flour with salt and sugar in a medium bowl. Using a pastry cutter or two knives, cut in the butter/margarine until the mixture resembles a coarse meal. Add water and mix until the dough comes together, adding just enough water until no longer crumble. Do not over handle the dough. Divide the dough in half, flatten into disks, wrap individually in cling film and refrigerate until needed, for at least 1 hour. Before using, roll the dough on a floured surface into a 14-inch round, then transfer carefully to your pie plate, continuing as the recipe indicates. Pumpkin Pie (serves 8) Pumpkin is now in season, and there is no better way to end a hearty meal than to make a pumpkin pie using sweet short crust pastry. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s really easy to make and share my recipe with you. For the pastry: make a sweet short crust pastry case, about 23cm diameter and 4cm deep (or use a shop bought sweet crust pastry case). Leave it in the tin and add 40g of crushed pecans to the bottom of the case. For the filling: 450g prepared weight pumpkin flesh, cut into 2.5 cm chunks/2 large eggs plus 1 yolk (use the white to make meringues maybe/75g soft dark brown sugar/1 tsp ground cinnamon/½ level teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg/½ tsp ground allspice/½ tsp ground cloves/½ tsp ground ginger/275 ml double cream Pre-heat the oven to 180ÂşC. To make the filling, steam the pumpkin then place

in a coarse sieve and press lightly to extract any excess water. Then lightly whisk the eggs and extra yolk together in a large bowl. Place the sugar, spices and the cream in a pan, bring to simmering point, giving it a whisk to mix everything together. Then pour it over the eggs and whisk it again briefly. Now add the pumpkin pureĂŠ, still whisking to combine everything thoroughly. Then pour the filling into your pastry case and bake for 35-40 minutes, by which time it will puff up round the edges but still feel slightly wobbly in the centre. Then remove it from the oven and place the tin on a wire cooling rack. Serve chilled (stored loosely covered in foil in the fridge) with some equally chilled crĂŠme fraĂŻche, but warm or at room temperature would be fine. This is one of my much-loved seasons as most of the ingredients available are my favourites for making soups, puddings and pies (more about that in my next column) and a healthy dose of fresh vegetables and omega 3 intake. Below, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve listed the key seasonal ingredients around now. Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll note that Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve included sloes â&#x20AC;&#x201C; keep look out for sloe bushes mingling in the hedgerows - also called blackthorn berries, which are a small fruited relative of the plum. Make a bottled batch of sloe gin this year and keep it stored until late 2011, an ideal treat for the winter months, or even as a Christmas present. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a very simple and inexpensive drink which is sure to â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;blow the cobwebs awayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. Alternative, and just as tasty is damson wine. Both can be potent in large quantities but exceptionally quaffable. Seasonal ingredients: Apple / Aubergine / Beetroot / Butternut squash / Cabbage / Chicory / Damsons / Fennel / Fig / Globe artichoke / Grey mullet / Grouse / Lamb / Leek / Mackerel / Mussels / Partridge / Pear / Plum / Pumpkin / Radish / Raspberry / Rocket / Scallop / Sea bass / Sloe / Sweetcorn / Swiss chard So, enjoy making my recipes, make the most of the variety of fruits available right now and have a go at making your own pastry (it also gives you a sense of achievement). I know that most people shy away from puddings but I always think if you have a small portion then itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not going to hurt, and if you have more fruit than the pastry or crumble (which can always be substituted with natural yoghurt instead of the delights noted above) then youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not missing out on a treat. Amateur Dramatic Societyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s & Marchington next production, Happy Families by John
Doveridge artist John Rattigan is bypassing his normal gallery outlets to show his work in his local village hall. John says â&#x20AC;&#x153;alongside the pub, post office and church, the village hall is at the centre of village life. I think it is the ideal venue to show original artworkâ&#x20AC;?. On the weekend of 13th/14th of November John has booked the hall between 10am-4pm on both days. He will display his unique interpretations of monkeys, owls and football crowds, in an exhibition that also coincides with the launch of his new website, www.johnrattigan.co.uk John also says, â&#x20AC;&#x153;A lot of people can feel intimidated by posh art galleries, so I want to show work in a venue they are familiar withâ&#x20AC;?. Johnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s paintings are often funny as well as serious and he is keen to see children come along as well as adults. And as one of his themes revolves around football he would like the Sunday morning footballers who play alongside the village hall to pop in and have a look. Godber, really is a family affair On his graduation day in 1978 John, played by Tom Mottram, looks back with warmth and affection over his teenage years. arly in the summer, Jean Hopkinson was reading a copy of the Uttoxeter Voice when she spotted that there was a competition in East Staffordshire for various garden categories. Jean had never entered any such contest before and would readily admit that she didn’t even know the names of some of the plants in her garden. After a discussion with her partner Gordon Bailey, Jean decided to put their rear garden forward to be considered for the Small Back Garden East Staffordshire Brighter Borough Gardening Competition. The garden has been created over the past 8 years and has 3 different patio areas all with their own features but equally attractive. Much of the couple’s material has been provided by family and friends and they have also spotted numerous second hand bargains in the local newspapers. Jean said that most of the garden furniture had been bought for them by their family who never had any troubling in knowing what to get them for birthdays and Christmas. She added that they wouldn’t have been able to achieve half of what they had without the very generous input from the family. The bottom patio area contains a well established rockery with a pebble stream which Jean built as Gordon did all the heavy work. The rockery is lit up at night and Jean says it gives her the feeling she is abroad with the stream running, and she finds it very peaceful and relaxing. Many of the features the couple have implemented come from ideas they have picked up on diverse holidays in different parts of the world. Also Jean found she had a flair for colour and design which she hadn’t really realised she had until she started to attend Bramshall Art Group. They have created very different corners to their garden with varying planting and design ideas, and it is a haven for the local birds. This is probably due to the fact that Jean has fitted pet cat Madge with a collar that has a bell on it!

A large shed at the bottom of the garden has been cunningly disguised by building a trellis in front of it and growing Virginia Creeper which, in the summer, covers the trellis and grows right across the shed. Jean and Gordon have also positioned old mirrors to reflect the various planting concepts and they give the illusion of the garden being a lot bigger than it is. At night the garden is another world altogether, and lighting has been timed to show off various features. Little wonder that the couple’s regular summer barbecues prove very popular with family and friends in the almost magical setting. The garden was judged in July by three experts and Jean said that, at the time, they commented that there was so much to look at they had a job to take it all in. When the contest results were announced in August, the Park Avenue, Uttoxeter couple thought that they might get a mention or perhaps a commendation but they were flabbergasted to find they had been named as winners of their category. Against all of the odds the self confessed amateurs had beaten all of the professional gardeners and were named as the Overall Best Small Back Garden in the East Staffordshire Brighter Borough Gardening Competition. On September 9th Jean and Gordon attended a special Presentation Dinner at Byrkley Park Garden Centre where they received the Winner’s Trophy from the Mayor of East Staffordshire. The couple haven’t decided whether or not they will ‘defend’ the Trophy next year but they will continue to keep the garden looking its best so the option will be there. Jean is now toying with the idea of providing consultancy services for aspiring gardeners as since the Award people have started asking her for tips on designs and features to improve their own gardens. As Gordon also keeps the couple vegetable self sufficient from his allotment, their joint advice could prove invaluable!

A day to remember Barry
By Organiser Mick Harper espite heavy rain prior to the game, the Barry Buxton tribute football match took place at Oldfields Sports Ground, Uttoxeter. Match Referee Peter Douglas looked over the pitch and gave the go ahead at a late morning inspection to allow a Uttoxeter Town select side to face Wolves All Stars. Although there was a decent turn out of spectators the support was well down on what had been hoped for due to the weather. Barry’s brother, Gareth Hudson, captained the select side for the first half and his other brother Ashley was the skipper for the second period. Josh Hudson, Barry’s 8 year old nephew, was the Town side’s Mascot and youngsters from Uttoxeter Juniors accompanied the players onto the pitch and were ball boys and girls for the game. There was a minute’s silence before the match in tribute to Barry Buxton. Wolves All Stars were skippered by Mel Eves in an entertaining match which eventually saw the Town seal victory by 7 goals to 5. Fittingly both Gareth and Ashley Hudson featured on the score sheet and the latter had a game to remember with an excellent hat-trick which saw him take home the match ball. Before the match there was a welcome back to Uttoxeter for Dee Roberts, her daughter Sarah and son Alex who had cycled from Gretna Green to help raise funds towards the event. Dee’s husband Ron followed them in a large van which was used as a mobile home en route. At the conclusion of the game there was a further minute’s silence which ended with the Last Post being sounded by Uttoxeter Town Band. One of the main features of the day’s fundraising was an Auction of over 50 items soon after the game. This was conducted by Dave Riley who did an excellent job. Everything went and the total sales came to just over £2,000. The item that realised the most was an Executive package for 4 people to attend the Liverpool v Bolton New Year fixture which brought in £170. During the weeks leading up to the event, scores of people worked their socks off to make the day a success and it was a real team effort with so many contributing. The day was very emotional for Barry’s family but they are sure to look back on it with a great sense of pride. At this point, the final total realised for the Army Dependants Trust and Help for Heroes has not been calculated but hopefully should be substantial.

Racecourse gets tourism stamp of approval ttoxeter Racecourse has become one of the first in England to receive official recognition from the national tourist

board. VisitEngland assessed the Staffordshire venue following the launch during the summer of the first ever quality scheme for sport. Areas under assessment included prearrival information, the racecourse's website, journey planning, signage, welcome on arrival, the actual sporting event, toilets, catering and retail outlets. After passing the assessment, the racecourse will be awarded a VisitEngland plaque illustrated by the organisation's red rose logo. James Berresford, Chief Executive of VisitEngland, said: "England has a world famous sporting heritage and for many parts of the country horse racing is at the core of the community. I can't think of a more thrilling day out than a day at the races. "The VisitEngland quality rose marque provides a recognised stamp of approval showing visitors that Uttoxeter Racecourse has been assessed along similar lines to a more traditional type of visitor attraction providing regular racegoers and first time visitors alike with a high quality, highly memorable experience." David MacDonald, General Manager of Uttoxeter Racecourse, said: "I am delighted with the results of our assessment which demonstrated that our staff provide an excellent experience for our visitors. "It is also hugely useful to have a truly independent assessment, because it has
shown me one or two areas where we can improve in order to offer an even better day out at the races. "The VisitEngland Quality Assured plaque will act as a stamp of approval showing visitors that a day's racing is a quality experience and great value for money." The tourist board said the racecourse is "very attractive and well managed" and whose staff show a "very good friendly approach". The racecourse's website - www.uttoxeterracecourse.co.uk - is "excellent" and "well structured". First impressions on arrival are "very good", with the uniformed staff portraying the racecourse as a "quality destination". The general appearance of the racecourse is "of a high standard with lots of care and attention to detail." Of the racing days, VisitEngland said there is a "great racing atmosphere and thoroughly enjoyable experience". The range of dining areas and bars is "impressive", although it was pointed out that some aspects of The Railway could be improved. However, the food in The Railway was highly rated by the inspector - "lunch was very tasty with high quality beef being very tender and flavoursome". The specific areas for racehorse owners and trainers are described as either "very good or excellent". The racecourse's top restaurant - Silks - is a "very good dining experience with an enticing menu and skilled staff providing an excellent level of service".
First Class local postman continues to achieve unbelievable success as part of a multiple-winning partnership. Andy Winkle, from Tean, along with John Holden, of Clitheroe, have enjoyed national recognition with Holden Racing, an international sidecar team. The pair were crowned 2009 British Champions which reflected the tremendous dedication the pair put into the sport. Andy, who keeps his fitness levels high through cycling and as a part-time fitness instructor, is the passenger in the partnership with John the driver. They have also enjoyed numerous European Championship successes, culminating with the title of F2 European Champions in 2007. Andy has over 10 years domestic and European passengering experience and has contested in numerous F1 world championship races. And accomplished TT sidecar passenger, one of only a handful to lap at speeds in excess of 133mos at the TT, the local postie has represented the local area with superb integrity. Andy, John and everyone at Holden Racing are once again doing their utmost to gain success this season and in the future and they would be delighted if local businesses would sponsor some part of the operation. Mick’s Magical Memories By Mick Harper
The mystery of the ginger cat ost people have at some stage in their lives had an unusual experience and I have had a few myself although one or two of them may have been due to over indulgence in a favourite watering hole during my ‘hard drinking days’! Back in 1991 I was working in Uttoxeter as a Pizza Delivery Driver and due to the nature of the job usually finished my shift well into the early hours. One night as I set off home around 2.30am to drive back to Marston Montgomery – where I lived at the time – the heavens opened and such was the force of the downpour the windscreen wipers could barely cope. There were loud claps of thunder and the sky lit up every few seconds with flashes of lightning. I was around half way between Uttoxeter and Rocester barely reaching 20 m.p.h. due to the conditions when my headlights picked out what I thought at first was a fox cub. As I got closer and slowed down even more I realised that the creature was in fact a ginger cat. The poor thing was drenched to the skin and was in the middle of the road. I pulled up alongside and opened the car door and immediately the cat jumped straight in, clambered over me and sat shivering, whilst soaking the passenger seat. It seemed very tame and obviously thought that the inside of my car was a lesser evil than the inclement weather. I was in a dilemma what to do for the best as I couldn’t bring myself to leave the animal to face the thunderstorm and the possibility it might be run over also.

I formed the opinion that someone had dumped the cat there as it wasn’t close to any houses and if it did live anywhere fairly near it would more than likely have made for home when the ‘monsoon’ started. So I continued the journey with my unexpected passenger alongside me. When I reached home I took the cat inside and dried it’s fur the best I could with a couple of towels. I put the electric fire on and soon it was washing itself and purring contentedly as I stroked it. A few pieces of chicken washed down with a saucer of milk further endeared me to my ‘guest’. I was getting quite tired so I decided to make a makeshift bed for ‘puss’ close to mine and then turn in for the night. What I didn’t think to legislate for was that my ginger friend might need to perform a bodily function before morning. Around 5am I was woken up by a frantic meowing and realised that if I didn’t act quickly I could have an unpleasant problem on my hands. So I quickly opened the door and the cat raced out. I left the door ajar expecting the animal to come back in once it had done what it had to do. However, after five minutes or so it hadn’t returned so I got dressed and went out with a torch to find it. My search was fruitless, there was no sign of the cat and the rain, which had abated, was starting to build up again. I decided the best thing to do was get back to bed and leave an outhouse open which the cat would be
able to shelter in when it came back. When I got up at 10am I fully expected the cat to be around but despite combing the area and making numerous enquiries I had no joy. I hadn’t a clue where it had gone but consoled myself with the thought that wherever it was couldn’t be worse than a busy road in the middle of nowhere. As time passed I didn’t really think about it again and just under 6 years later when I was about to move from Marston to Ashbourne I had completely forgotten the episode. The night before I left Marston I opened the door ready to carry some items to my car. As I gathered the bits together I heard a sound behind me. I turned round and found a ginger cat had walked in. It came up to me and rubbed against my legs and I bent down and stroked its head. The cat only stayed for a couple of minutes and then off it went. It may sound ridiculous but I am one hundred per cent certain that it was the same cat that I picked up on the Rocester road all of that time before. Well over 13 years later I often think about the ginger cat mystery. The conclusion I have reached is that someone in Marston must have given it a good home and some feline sixth sense could have told it that the person responsible for introducing it to the area was leaving. The brief visit might have been the cat’s way of thanking me for it’s happy new life! So if anyone in the Marston Montgomery area who may be reading this took in a stray ginger cat in the early 90s they now know how it came to be there. Good health to you all. Mick
Let The Voice Be With You By Les Humphries ell Readers - here we are again! The Churnet Valley Male Voice Choir recently held it's 9th Annual Concert in Cheadle Methodist Church, raising over £800 to be shared between the above Church, Donna Louise Trust, Douglas Macmillan Hospice and the choir. Although attendance was down on previous years, due to several other functions being held on the same night, including one in the Guildhall just down the road, those who attended were most appreciative of the choirs programme, which included some old favourites, kicking off with 'When the Saints go marching in', which is always a rousing toe tapper, and among the new offerings, a Sinatra medley which proved a good crowd pleaser. The choirs guest artists were the fantastic soprano Denise Leigh, and her husband Stefan Andrusyschyn, who not only accompanies her on the piano or accordian, he is also a wonderful virtuoso performer on the latter. Both have overcome the handicap of blindness to perform all over the world at top level, in places as far apart as Dubai and Beijing. The Choir were only too happy to welcome them back for a second year, as they live locally when in the UK, and they certainly have no delusions of grandeur, being only too happy to entertain in small local venues, as much as large theatres. This being the reason that the date for the concert was not negotiable, because of a full diary of engagements by Denise and Stefan. Both had solo spots on the night, and wowed the audience with some powerful opereratic singing from

Denise which lifted the roof with its power, and amazing accordian finess from Stefan. The highlight for the choir was their closing number, a duet with Denise, Laudate Dominum, which they had looked forward to all evening, whether Denise felt the same is a matter of conjecture!) Anyway, everyone left happy. The choir are still looking for new members to build for the future, do you fancy joining us? Just turn up at the Bishop Rawle School in Cheadle at 7.30 on a Tuesday evening, and sing along for a couple of hours. No experience necessary, you don't even need to read music. Rest assured you will be given a warm welcome and may even make some new friends, I know I did! The Choir will be performing next for the Royal British Legion in the Cheddleton Community Centre on the 27th of November. Uttoxeter Rugby Football Club are finding life in Midlands 3 West (North) a lot harder going, but having lost so many of their promotion winning side
of last season, they are still re-building. I am sure that they will improve their mixed results as the season goes on. Rocester under 14's which my grandson Owen skippers from goalkeeper, are in a similar position in Division 1 of the Burton Junior Football League.At time of writing their top goal scorer Tom Beaumont (a fine rugby name!) is on fire, and but for some defensive lapses they could have been well up the table, and when this article goes to press they may well be, but they are holding their own against some tough opposition. Although I am a rugby enthusiast as regular readers will know, I enjoy watching the youngsters play, even if some of my fellow 'adults' are a bit too enthusiastic for my taste at times. Dale Boot has been out of action for much of the early season with a broken leg and has been sorely missed in defence as he has a physical presence, but the lads have been really playing for each other this season, and are becoming a formidable unit. I have been particularly impressed with Mattie Uppington, who is the smallest lad in the team, but certainly the most energetic. Thats it for this issue, sorry no moans for once I must be mellowing with age! Reg Groombridge Memorial Golf Day 2010 By Tim Leech helped to organise a Memorial Golf Day on Saturday 2nd October at Uttoxeter Golf Club. There was a good turn-out of Reg's mates and old golfing buddies in conditions not ideal golf but a fitting tribute to one of the town's characters who sadly passed away on the 8th Hole on the 5th December 2008. The course was a credit to the Green keeper's because we had been on the receiving end of some heavy rain in the week leading up to the day of the event. A Stableford scoring system gave all 30 golfers a fair crack at the trophy. There were some very good scores carded. It was fitting that the winner with 38 points was one of Regâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s great mates and golfing buddies, local business man and well known sportsman Pete Douglas. Pete was the inaugural winner the previous year. Second place with 37 points was Lee Buckingham and Neil Thorley in third place with 37 points but Bucko winning on count back.

On and off the field By Alan Smith Alan Smith has enjoyed a lifetime of sport in the Cheadle and Uttoxeter areas. Here Alan delves into his memory bank to write his unique brand of humour on colourful sports and life comments with memories of past and present which we hope readers will enjoy... My article this month comes with joy, pride and much, much sadness. And the sadness because a few weeks ago my sister-in-law’s son Ben Johnson, a lovable gentle giant of a man, was out on a run in the Brookhouses area of Cheadle. He was in collision with a car and from his accident came horrific injuries to arms, legs and to this day of writing, a coma. The very latest I hear is that he’s trying to respond and may God give him the help he needs to makea complete recovery. Fate has a strange way of manifesting itself. About 3 or so months ago I was taking my stepson Ryan to get his results from High School. He needed them as soon as possible, to take them to the Army Recruiting Office in Hanley. The levels he hoped to get from those results would determine that he got the job in The Army he had applied for. That of an ammunition technician which I believe leads to, if he wants, bomb disposal etc – crickey, those words put the wind up you don’t they? But still on that journey to school we met up with my sister in law Tracey, Ben’s mum, on enquiring how his older brother Martin,and dad Martin were keeping, she informed me that husband Martin was Ok and so was brother Martin still serving the Queen in The Army. And Ben then was awaiting stages to be completed to join the RAF and was doing a lot of running to get himself fit. And so this horrific accident leaves things in total disarray. Ben had this season I think I’m right in saying completed his first full season in the 1st XI at Checkley CC, helping in no small way as a seam bowler and I’m reliably informed from Andy Carr his skipper, Ben was a great club lad and so popular with everyone on and off the field. The club are devastated at the tragedy and as I expected from that superb outfit have arranged a golf day and other events with proceeds towards Ben’s rehabilitation. This golf day was held at my golf club, Uttoxeter and I had the pleasure to put in a team which I called Ebonys and Ivorys! No prize who the ebony was but my ivorys were Pete Douglas, Neil Meredith and school teacher Chris
Cooper a cross section of society wouldn’t you say – 2 successful businessmen, Mr Cooper and me the pensioner now 65 – bloody hell where did that leap from to Tracey, Martin and your family? Can I say that the whole of the area are thinking of you in your hours of torment. The joy and pride though evolved from Ryan receiving his results and on taking them to the recruiting office. He was contacted by them a couple of days later with the news that his levels were not only good enough to get the job he requested but he would also qualify for a Golden Hello payment – that’s on completion of his training which he would undertake at Winchester Technical Foundation Army College. He will receive £1,250 payment as a one off but that’s excellent on top of hthe education and career that they are offering him. I must say though during my involvement with Ryan and watching him develop, there have been times when I thought temptation may get the better of him and go the way of so many in being content to do a dead end job and live his life out not seeing the world. But thankfully this was not to be. Anyway the day came when Ryan, his mum Donna and I had to take him to Hanley to swear his oath of allegiance to Queen and Country. God I was so proud, his mum was in tears. Yes, we’ve discussed Afghanistan, yes we’ve seen Wootton Bassett, but believe me we are confident in the training Ryan will get will be the best that money can buy. And we have the upmost confidence in Ryan in his pursuance of his Army career. The weekend quickly came around of his leaving home to join The Army and we decided a meal at The Queens, Freehay, would be nice for all of us. On the Saturday night before leaving on the Sunday morning Donna, myself, sister Chloe, little brother Ben and Ryan's girlfriend Abbey, and of course my brother and my sister-in-law Terry and Jean, at the end of the meal I stood and proposed a toast to Ryan, quickly followed by Chloe and
Abbey - I think us four older ones just about held out, but that didn’t happen on the Sunday morning as Abbey, Chloe, Ben, mum and I piled into the car on the journey to Stoke Station. On arriving we met up with families who’s sons were also leaving them to join The Army and were there on the swearing in day at Hanley. 10.07am – that was the time of the train and I nervously watched the clock and the family’s reactions, I saw and heard the announcement of the train entering the station to take our lad away from us, yes our lad because believe me he truly is a credit to his mum, grandparents, school and everybody. And therefore I’m having a bit of him as well. By this stage a box of Kleenex would not be enough. And the train pulled out and we returned to our car and the journey back to Cheadle was conspicuous by the library silence, even our daughter Chloe as its not been seen before that she can be quiet. It's now close to Ryan coming home on his 1st leave and he tells me that he’s tidy now because we all know how untidy teenagers can be, but I’ll believe that when I see it! In my next article I’ll tell you of my time in The Army and the worst decision of my life! But I’d like to end with comments about our football teams Stoke and Port Vale. Stoke, steady, settled and I’m not worried about them even though I think this will be their hardest season. The Vale I’m so pleased for, I didn’t think I would ever say that. But the way they looked after us on our re-union night has stayed with me and the fact that my mate’s lad Gareth Owen is a rock in their defence adds interest for us Cheadle folk. Even though Gareth, you are still not taking up my challenge with the golf clubs but if you can turn your hand to that as well as the promise you showed with the cricket ball until you had to give that up because of soccer, you may give me a close game – but hurry up as I’m having my hip redone this December, that is if they have any brown hip replacements in stock ha ha!! (remember that story from an earlier issue??) And if they do I hope they aren’t metal, I set them airport alarms off all the time and with my colour I get a little bit scared, security have guns now you know! And so you good people of Nigel’s domain, thank you for reading and I hope it has not been too serious but that’s life. And to all mums and dads, if you can just look around you and tell your kids again you really love them, I bet they return the sentiment... Smithy

The Legend Kevin Spink t is a very sad time of the year because on the 2nd November 2005, one of my great mates, the late and great Kevin Spink sadly passed away at the age of 50. Kev’ was a one off and a genuinely fantastic guy. I was lucky enough to have played alongside Kev’ as a Central Defensive pairing for our beloved Three Tuns in the Burton Sunday League, Burton Midweek League and Uttoxeter and District League. He was the footballer out of the two of us and was a superb player who used to let me do all of the running around, heading the ball and tackling and he just cleverly picked up the pieces. It was always a stroll for Kev’ who was a hard so and so when he wanted to be but always did it in a nice way. If he had just stiffened an on rushing striker, Kev’ would be picking him up off the floor and apologising, blaming his slowing pace and usually me for missing the ball as the guy rolled around in agony after being hit with the kitchen sink and Kev’ offering to buy him a pint in the pub afterwards and he would have the ref’ in the palm of his hands to ensure he was not booked. For every game Kev’ would arrive late, not as late as his mate Ant “Inchy” Rowley who will be late for his own funeral but straight away the dressing room would lighten up as Spinky started the crack. Usually stinking of last night’s curry and blaming his bad head on a dodgy onion bahji rather than the 10 pints of lager that he had consumed. The mickey taking would carry on until he got onto the pitch and then he switched into his auto pilot mode and promptly strolled around the pitch moaning at everyone. Then off to the Tuns to lord everyone with stories of how he should have been man of the match and as the lager flowed promptly assassinated every teams mates performance, no malice, just trying to provoke a reaction and get the crack going. Priceless. I can tell you 100’s of true stories about the great man but here a couple that summed him up. We played every Tuesday evening in the late 1980’s at Shobnall fields in the Burton and District midweek floodlit league. It was a very good standard and we had a really good team, managed by Micky Ratcliffe and the late Fred Collins they had the pick of the best players in the town. We did them proud winning the league and a couple of cups. Anyway Kev’ always drove but would moan about this fact but secretly enjoyed this because he could then moan about this and start the crack. Well after another victory on his way home driving toward the Tuns he was bombing along with a car full of team mates as he approaches 6 lanes end at Marchington Cliff on the back road to Burton. Well Kev’ was rattling on about how he was man of the match and how bad everyone else had played and that he had carried them on his own, when suddenly the car fell silent. Kev’ then enquired why everyone was looking decidedly white and silent. His fellow passengers then informed

him with more than a few expletives that he had just driven straight across the 6 Lane Ends junction at 80mph without braking or looking for oncoming traffic. His reply “we are alright aren’t we! Anyway who’s round is it?” Instant death had just been avoided by a relieved car full of team mates and he was just worried about getting back to his beloved Tuns for a couple of quick pints. Anyway in the Late 80’s the Three Tun’s was a thriving place and all of the crack revolved around the football team and usually Spinky holding centre stage. Well a couple of the supporters Steven “Harry” Harrison and Shaun “Scrooge” Morris decided there was a money making opportunity and used to run a book on each game. They would offer odds on the final score, the first goalscorer etc and it helped with the crack. Well nearing the end of the season, Spinky had not scored a goal, in truth he hardly ever crossed the half way line and enquired with the lads what would the odds be on himself scoring a hat trick. “100/1, were the odds given and Spinky promptly invested £3 on himself and our Goalkeeper Chris “Rigger” Allen invested the same amount. We were playing away at Foston Prison, it was an overspill prison for Sudbury at the time and they had a prison football team in the Uttoxeter and District Sunday league. Well, we were 3-0 up and Kev remembered the bet had sobered up and remembered the bet that he had placed with lads. He was off like a greyhound after the hare on every occasion that we got a corner or a sniff of a chance. Well off a corner, the unlikely happened and Kev’ managed to score. We were 5 – 0 up at half time, with Kev’ my fellow Central Defender now playing as an out and out striker. Well 20 minutes into the 2nd half we were awarded a penalty. No prizes for guessing who insisted on taking it, your right Spinky promptly despatched this past the ‘keeper and the bet was on. Well obviously everyone was now aware of the fact that there was a substantial wager on offer and Kev’ was goal hanging more than Gerd Muller ever did. The 2 wanna be bookies were now starting to sweat; Spinky was firing in shots from all angles without success. In the last minute of the game and with virtually the last kick of the game the ball was slipped through to Kev clean through on goal. The next few seconds seemed to take place in slow motion as he drew the ‘keeper and slotted the ball past him for his hat trick but more importantly £300 smackers for him and £300 smackers for our ‘keeper Chris Allen. Well the crowd went mad, all the players went mad; the opposition prisoners looked at us as if we had all gone stir crazy and the 2 want to be bookies fainted on the sidelines. Fair play to them both they paid out the winnings and you can imagine the session that took place in the Tuns with King Kevin Spink sitting on his crown holding court to a captivated audience. Anyone who had the privilege to have met Kevin, loved him and every time I think of him I smile. A true Legend. Happy Days Regards Roachy
