ergeant Gary J. Kite AFCO (RAF) Birmingham arranged the delivery of a variety of sports equipment to Windsor Park Middle School in Uttoxeter by Helicopter. The RAF landed on the school sports field. The whole school gathered on the playground to watch the School Council meet and greet the pilots and thank them. There was a short presentation on the school playground where the equipment was received and thanks were given by the School Council. The enormous equipment bags contained football kits, netball kits, training bibs, netball stands, netball posts and post protectors. All kits had the school logo and The Royal Air force logo on. The visitors joined the School Council for lunch before they left when the helicopter hovered for a few last seconds whilst the whole school quickly gathered to wave good bye. Two pupils from the School council were lucky enough to sit in the helicopter with the pilot during the photo shoot. Lily Hassall and Peter Walker.

Pasta King Comes to Oldfields

t Oldfields school, Uttoxeter, there has always been a range of healthy food for the pupils to eat at lunch times but now a new dimension had been added and will be enjoyed by everyone. Pasta King is new to Oldfields and has a variety of pastas that are both delicious and very good for you. We had a taster day where the Oldfields pupils tasted the amazing samples of the new Pasta King, and were given three intensely tasting pastas in a large cup. Many pupils enjoyed the pasta greatly as it ran out after 10 minutes! Some pupils said that the chicken and tomato pasta was full of great flavours, which was enjoyed thoroughly by the pupils who were licking their lips for hours afterwards. The taster day was such a success that we have now incorporated the full range of pasta choices into our daily menu. At Oldfields, school dinners are GORGEOUS, and it’s all thanks to out great team of kitchen staff, led by the wonderful Mrs Higgs. Uttoxeter beer festival ttoxeter’s fourth annual beer festival takes place at Oldfields Sports and Social Club on the first weekend in June. The festival has grown in strength from year to year and has already raised thousands of pounds for charity. This year’s event, organised by Uttoxeter Lions and Oldfields, will be raising funds for the Donna Louise Trust. Admission to the festival on Saturday, June 6th, is by ticket only, with a limit of 550 people. The cost of tickets is six pounds, and includes a commemorative beer mug. There will be 25 different beers and a selection of ciders and lagers. Most of the real ales are from micro-breweries, many of them local to Staffordshire. Local companies can sponsor a cask of beer for £50. Organiser Steve Shields said: ‘We realise times are tough but we’ve managed to keep the admission price down. If companies can find the money to help us pay for the beer that makes all the difference to the amount we can donate to charity.’ There will be four hours of live music throughout the evening with an emphasis this year on classic rock and rhythm’n’blues. Tickets are available from the Oldfields club or any member of Uttoxeter Lions.

Chorus Concert for Grade 2 Listed Building Singing to Support the Building Fund ttoxeter Methodists are hoping to embark on a programme of major building work at their Grade 2 listed Church, a familiar landmark at the top of the High Street in Uttoxeter. The Church was built nearly 200 years ago and is badly in need of modernisation. This has already begun, with the replacement of the roof and the painting and repair of the outside of the church itself, but from here the plans become more ambitious. Ultimately, the building to the rear of the Church will be demolished and replaced with a smaller, more modern congregational and community space complete with kitchen and toilets whilst inside the Church itself a more versatile and welcoming space will be created, suitable for different types of worship and community use. Clearly these are lean and difficult times, although for Churches across the land the ‘crunch’ is nothing new and most have had to deal with an ever increasing list of structural problems matched only by an ever decreasing amount of funds for many years. A spot of fund-raising is the key and local singers the Heath Chorus have stepped in and are hoping to help boost the building fund with a concert on Tuesday 19th May at the Heath Community Centre, Holly Road, Uttoxeter. The concert will feature the Chorus and local soloists, pupils of MD Helen Morgan. The Chorus will present songs from their 2008/09 repertoire, some for the last time; whilst a small selection of soloists will feature in a ‘spotlight on Sondheim’ section as well as the usual mix and variety of content the Chorus are well known for. The Chorus have sung for the Church before in 2006 and 2008 and are delighted to be asked to sing again. “Staging the concert at the community centre means we can fit a few more people in and it’s our ‘home’ so we are very hopeful that we can do our bit and boost the building fund and have a fun entertaining evening at the same time! The timing means that this will be the end for our 08/09 repertoire but we’re looking forward to July and Leading Ladies 09 to premiere lots of new songs!” Refreshments will be served on arrival and there will be an interval raffle. To book your seat in advance for the Heath Chorus concert on Tuesday 19th May at a cost of £4, please telephone 01889 562994 or 01889 565086. On the door prices will be higher. To find out more about the Church, to enquire about the Churches Together Alpha Course beginning on 23rd April, or to make a donation to Uttoxeter Methodist Church Building Fund, please contact Rev. Christine Hey on 01889 562994. You are also welcome to join us for worship every Sunday at 10.00am, and for coffee on Wednesday mornings.

Rotary Young Chef of the Year Competition ominic Stratton from Ryecroft Middle School, Rocester has reached the Regional finals of the Rotary’s Young Chef of the Year. Dominic and another student from TAHS were both sponsored by Uttoxeter Rotary Club. The students taking part in the competition have fought their way through in school heats and District heats to claim their places alongside other regional finalists. The competition requires each student to prepare a healthy options meal for two with ingredients costing no more than £6.00 in just 45 minutes. The District finals were held at Stafford College and Regional Finals at Birmingham. The competitions were judged by top chefs, who said the entries were of a very high standard and they had great difficulty separating the top ones in each group.

Oldfields’ students poetry success ell done to five Oldfields’ School students for achieving success in NASEN’s annual national poetry competition. NASEN (National Association of Special Educational Needs) specified that students should write a poem on the theme of inclusion and this year they received in the region of 500 entries. Jack Sharman from Year 6 won the Primary Individual prize which included £50 cash, a gardening kit and a selection of beautiful books. Congratulations also go to the ‘highly commended’ entries from Kieron Knights, Laura Isted, Charlotte Cripwell and Ben Woodhead. All winning and highly commended students were invited to the Education Show at Birmingham NEC to collect their prizes and certificates. They each won a selection of books and a goody bag. The poems from all these students are being published in NASEN’s poetry anthology which will be available on line soon. This is the second year running that Oldfields has entered the competition and last year one of our students, Maisie Lowe in Y6 took first prize. We are very proud not only to have so many winning entries but also to champion such positive messages about inclusion and every child matters.

I’m scared to go to school today, why can’t they understand? First sight I might look different Inside we’re all the same Why can’t they just accept me? I want to play their games I know I can’t keep up with them But I feel I’d like to try They treat me like a baby Each day inside I cry There’s no need to shout or talk slow It’s clear to me what they say A chance to show I’m just like them Would make a better day Jack Sharman – Oldfields Hall Middle School My Special Friend Today I made a special friend, She really is quite fun. She has to be so clever for all the things she’s won. Our shopping trip was really great, But she got some funny looks. My favourite part was when she bought some lovely books. I think it was her wheelchair that made us leave her out, She said the way we treated her made her want to scream and shout. I have now decided that inclusion is they key, That people we think are different are the same as you and me. Charlotte Cripwell – Oldfields Hall Middle School

Respect for others Let’s accept we’re not all the same You like this, but that’s not my game!! One is thin, one is small, One is big, one is tall! Respect for others; Self, sisters and brothers. For anyone included …Make sure no one’s excluded! Your secrets to share And always be fair For this world has got to go on! Laura Isted – Oldfields Hall Middle School Standing In the Corner I saw someone standing in the corner, twiddling his thumbs, Not being included, missing out on all the fun. Close by my friend were playing, Laughing, chatting altogether, Urging him to join in. So much nicer with everyone, In a group is much more fun, Outside the group is lonely and sad, Neglect is something we will not allow. Ben Woodhead – Oldfields Hall Middle School Part of the Team Wow!!!!! I’ve been chosen I looked at the board my mind was frozen At last, at last, I was one of the team! I was one of the dream team. I would carry the cup Out of the field With our heads held high in the sky For we are the greatest dream team there is. Kieron Knights – Oldfields Hall Middle School

perfect day... Bride: Julia Dean, an Administration Officer for a Charity’s National Secretary, of Uttoxeter Groom: Paul Stuart Simon, an Agricultural Business Manager with Lloyds TSB, North Midlands. Wedding Day: January 31st 2009 Ceremony: Staffordshire Suite Venue: Uttoxeter Racecourse

n engagement of 10 years and two children later we finally arranged our Wedding Day and combined the celebration with Julia’s 40th Birthday. From July 2008 to 31st January 2009 a lot of intense planning and organising had taken place but at last our day has arrived. A beautiful winter’s morning, cold but blue sky, I couldn’t have wished for better for the end of January. At 11.00am off went the girls, Julia, Julie (Paul’s sister) and Mia our daughter, to Mitchell Smith Hairdressers in Uttoxeter where Vickie did a great job on our hair and our headdresses. Kerry, my friend, collected us at about 1.00pm and took us home for lunch. Shortly after arriving home Emilie Duclos Florists in Uttoxeter arrived with our beautiful flowers. Just what I wanted. Bonita Walker qualified Make-Up Artist and a friend, was at home with me to do my make-up whilst I munched my way through lunch whilst sipping Champagne to calm my nerves! While being made to look fabulous with my make-up my Photographer Dominic Paget Contemporary Wedding Photography of 73 Lansbury Grove, Weston Coyney had arrived here. He had been to Windy Arbour Guest House, Hollis Lane, Denstone to take photos of Paul, Ben, Clive, Nancy & Gordon getting ready. All was going well there. Before I knew it mum and dad Linda and Alan had arrived here and were getting changed whilst James Capper from Capperdigital, Bagnall Common, Stanley our DVD Producer was busy filming away. Mum and dad looked lovely and I was proud that dad was to be giving me away. Kerry was now busy downstairs looking after visitors and making sure everyone had a drink. Beverley Krause-Williams, a friend and the owner of Honey Cole Bridal Studio in Abbots Bromley had arrived with all the

A

dresses and it was all systems go. Dominic and James both wanted us in our dresses so that they could start their photos of us. Bev helped me while Kerry helped Julie and Mia into theirs. My dress was a beautiful Augusta Jones designed dress, Ivory in colour with chiffon layered over (duchess) satin with an embroidered lace off the shoulder bodice and two flowing chiffon scarves off the centre of the back, lying gently on a short romantic train. To compliment this I had a lace bolero jacket made to match the lace on the dress bodice. I looked like a princess with my headdress and matching sparkling jewellery. I carried a bouquet of trailing ivory roses, freesias and cala lilies.

Julie’s dress was a full length halter neck and she had shoes dyed to match and carried a chiffon ivory wrap while Mia wore a sleeveless three-quarter length full skirted dress with ivory ballerina style shoes and ivory bolero. They both carried matching hand-tied bunches of ivory roses with crystals intertwined in them. 2.50pm Ready to go downstairs, where my brother Tim and girlfriend Sara were waiting with mum and dad. Our car a cream 1930’s style Classic Regent from Princess Wedding Cars of Ladderedge Leek had arrived and was waiting on the drive. It had already been to Denstone to pick up the Groom and family and had dropped them at Uttoxeter Racecourse the venue for our marriage and reception. The Car looked lovely in the sunlight so clean and shiny, gleaming and ready to go. Off down the road went the girls and mum all looking lovely and leaving a precious moment for dad and I to have. He looked so wonderful and proud. 3.10pm The car arrived back for Dad and I. Leaving the house was wonderful to be greeted by friends and neighbours who wanted to catch a glimpse and wish me well. I felt so special. Off dad and I went down the road where I had to meet the Registrars Jane Dodd and Jane Hudson for a pre-Ceremony meeting. I felt reassured by these two lovely ladies that all would go well and I proceeded to enter the Staffordshire Suite where the 3.30pm Ceremony would take place. I was about to make my life commitment to Paul at last. As Pachelbel Canon in D started playing I walked slowly with dad down to where Paul

M

was standing. Feeling nervous and holding dad’s hand, I looked at Paul and thought how smart he looked in his wedding suit. All the gents’ suits were provided by Buxton & Bonnet High Street Uttoxeter. I was filled with emotion as I had waited so long for this day. A quick tip I learnt “look up if you think you are to cry and it will stop you” flashed through my mind and saved my makeup. Dad proudly gave me away and our Ceremony began. Paul bravely did a reading to me “Our Day” and I was so touched by it I had to fight my tears back. We both did our vows and exchanged rings which were presented to us on our ring cushion by our son Ben, 6ys old and Paul’s Best Man. He was so proud of himself, behaved impeccably and so grown up. At last the moment, we were husband and wife and had a special moment for the two of us to enjoy the relief that we had got through the Ceremony. My nerves calmed instantly and I had a beam of happiness on my face. Dominic took photographs of us signing the Register and we left the room to Leona Lewis “A moment like this”. Dominic and James took some photographs whilst we still had some light outside and we had great fun dashing across the stands at the Racecourse to get pictures Dominic had already pre-planned. It had gone very chilly at this time and we decided to go upstairs to the Box we had been allocated to join our family for some celebratory drinks and canapés. A few more pics, and then my husband and I, went off for a romantic ride in the car for a short while to calm down before our Celebrations began at 6.00pm.

e arrived back and entered the Platinum Bar where our guests had started to arrive. It was amazing to see all our friends and family there to join us in celebrating a truly remarkable day. The Platinum Suite looked better than I dreamed it could look. Kerry and I had spent time dressing the tables with gold party poppers, bubbles, ivory favours for both ladies and gents, adding confetti ivory cones for the ladies and placing tealight holders around each table. Emilie Duclos had added centre decorations of vases filled with ivory lilies and Elizabeth Howe of Inflation Sensations, Uttoxeter had placed gold and ivory balloons in the centre of each table adding fabulous height to the room. Amanda Brown of Mandy’s Special Occasion Cakes, Tean had made our most beautiful wedding cake and that had been set off by ivory voile draped around the cake base. As all the tealights were lit and the lights dimmed the room looked so romantic it was really overwhelming. Our guests were greeted by Paul and I to the room and Paul did a welcome speech followed by a rendition of Happy Birthday for me and a cake was produced by Kerry. It was great. Jenkinsons Caterers of Stafford produced a feast of food which was faultless and their service was very professional. Compliments to Jackie Roberts The Chocolate Tailor for the handmade chocolates. Jackie has a stall once a month on the Uttoxeter Farmer’s Market. Paul and I had pleasure in cutting the cake and the speeches followed. During our meal all the children remained downstairs and had their party. The food complimentary of a friend Kate who is

excellent at organising and preparing food and their entertainment was Magician Chris Peskett, a Professional Children’s Entertainer from Rugeley who did a brilliant magic show for them and did some balloon modelling. Dad not particularly familiar with speeches did a heart warming speech of how proud he and mum were and this was followed by Paul’s kind and quite amusing at times speech. The tearjerking speech was done by Ben who managed to read a couple of lines which had everyone reaching for tissues. Paul concluded with thank you’s of flowers to various people who have helped in varying ways. 8.30pm our entertainment, Adam Smith, a former Student of Alleynes High School and neighbour sang live for us for half an hour. During his interval we had a fabulous fireworks display organised by Keith and Carolyn Flunder of Laser Hire Ltd of Fole. I have never seen fireworks so good and I don’t think our guests had either for the compliments we had. After Adam finished his set we were invited to the dance floor by our DJ Adam Dewhurst of Uttoxeter to dance our first dance to Aerosmith “Don’t want to miss a thing” and have never seen so much confetti and bubbles it was untrue. We danced the night away until we could dance no more. The DJ was packing up. I can only describe our Wedding Day as amazing, more than I ever dreamed of. All my hard work paid off, all my friends and family had a very enjoyable and fun time and I feel very content that now “I am whole”. Looking at photographs and the DVD our day was Perfect! Uttoxeter NCT nearly new sale can help parents stretch their budgets o you have a baby on the way or a toddler to bring up? Are you worried about the upcoming costs? With many parents feeling the financial strain of the recession, The Uttoxeter NCT (National Childbirth Trust) Nearly New Sale offers parents a great solution for all their baby essentials. The sale will be held at Oldfields Hall Middle School in Stone Road, Uttoxeter, on Saturday 16th May, from 10am until 12 noon. Parents will be able to save themselves a fortune on quality clothes, toys and accessories for babies and children up until age seven - plus maternity clothes and accessories all in ‘nearly new’ condition. The Uttoxeter NCT Nearly New Sales are hugely popular with 200 to 300 people attending each event last year. They also provide an ideal way for parents to make some extra income by selling their unwanted baby products. With none of the postage and packing hassle associated with selling over the internet, sellers can simply drop off their items before the event, and collect any unsold ones afterwards. The NCT takes 30% of the seller’s total, to cover the cost of arranging the event, and to generate money to support the work of the charity. Anyone wishing to help during the sale is eligible to take part in the ‘helpers only’ sale before the doors open to the general public.

Cheadle Arts Festival 2009 By Stella Heritage headle Arts Festival 2009 drew to a close on Saturday 4th April with the very successful Showcase Day when over 20 individual artists displayed their work. The variety and and skill of the participants was amazing. There is so much talent in the area and the Showcase was indeed a great stage for their work. The week long Festival had its ups and downs – the previous Saturday was the turn of the

C

Crafters and the entertainers. Crafts included stone- painting, Quilling, Cake decorating, Calligraphy and parchment work, the public were encouraged to have a go and some beautiful works were on display as usual. The U3A Band entertained and the Vivienne Shelley dancers were superb as usual. The parade formed up in the Market Place and led by the ‘Weavils’ band they made their way to the Guild Hall, accompanied by the Tribal Belly Dancer – Zazu. Their infectious dancing and playing set the scene for an excellent day. Sunday saw the Peeps into the

Past which again was well attended with some very interesting exhibits. Old photos and memorabilia were the talking point and proved very evocative. During the week however the attendance at events was extremely disappointing. A talk on the beautiful St Giles Church Pugin’s Gem was so interesting but only about 25 people took advantage of Mr Peter Cartlidge’s excellent history of the church. Wednesday was Midweek Music Night with four groups and excellent foot-tapping music – again – 43 people attended, very disappointing – they missed a treat. Thursday we had a new departure and held a Church Service of Thanksgiving for all the abounding talents, those who did attend enjoyed the Rev. Tina Swire and her unconventional approach. Next year is already in the planning stage and we are all raring to go again – building on the successes and re-thinking the other events.

Spring Songs

t’s springtime again and the “Stubwood Singers” are looking forward to their “Spring Serenade” held at Stubwood Methodist Chapel on Saturday 9th May at 7:00pm, as part of the Chapel Anniversary Celebrations. The evening is a mix of secular and sacred music, poems, humorous renditions and audience participation in the singing of favourite hymns. Delicious refreshments are served afterwards and everyone is welcome, just turn up early if you want a seat! The “Stubwood Singers” are a friendly group of ladies or “girls”, as their leader, Susanne Smith affectionately refers to them; who sing locally, entertaining W.I. Groups, senior citizen clubs and other organisations, for their own and audiences’ enjoyment. Originally founded at the Methodist church at Stubwood in the mid 1980’s, in recent years strong ecumenical links have been forged, as they were joined by members of All Saints’ Parish Church Denstone and others interested in music and singing. Where is Stubwood? It is on the hill above the village of Denstone, with wonderful views of the weaver hills and surrounding countryside, it also sits between the JCB factory at Rocester and Denstone College. During the summer months on the first Saturday of each month, commencing Saturday 2nd May, the chapel will have an “Open Door” serving Tea/Coffee from 10 – 12 noon. So if you are new to the area, on holiday, out for a walk or want to meet new friends for a chat, please call in, you will be made very welcome. For further information telephone: 01889 590580

Chicks for Children o enhance the delivery of the curriculum across all Key Stages, Thomas Alleynes Community Farm has just launched its ‘Chicks for Children’ scheme. As part of this exciting new project our state of the art incubators and brooders will be delivered to interested local schools together with a small number of fertile eggs. A member of staff will set up the incubator and talk the students through the incubation process as well as providing resources to aid in teaching. We will also supply everything that is needed to look after the eggs including a candling lamp so that the eggs can be checked for fertility. After hatching the chicks will remain in school for a week after which time they will collected to rear on Alleyne’s farm. The incubator has recently been set up at Hutchinson Memorial School in Checkley where reception students are learning about life cycles. (photo of student) If any schools are interested in taking part in the scheme please contact Penny Bestwick on bestwick@tahs.org.uk. There will be a small charge to cover the cost of transport and maintenance of equipment. NOTE: The Voice would like to apologise to Alleyne’s School for errors in our last issue regarding their excellent farm.

ttoxeter Racecourse staged a historical John Smith’s Midlands Grand National Day when the Victor Dartnall trained Russian Trigger won the big race which also led to biggest ever payout for the Tote Scoop 6 bonus bet! Thousands packed into the local racecourse to witness a marvellous afternoon’s racing and it was great to see so many local people continue to give their patronage to one of the county’s leading sporting venues. Russian Trigger’s victory in the John Smith Midlands Grand National was a very emotional affair for connections and it was a similar story for the winners of the Scoop 6 who picked up nearly £3.2 million. One of those winners was part owner of National Hunt legend Denman, Harry Findlay, and he was there in person to collect the huge cheque on behalf of the other winners of the bonus bet. The Uttoxeter & Cheadle Voice photographer was on hand to get behind the scenes to capture lots of our local folk at the Racecourse enjoying a terrific afternoon of sport. Take a look to see how many you recognise...

Red Nose Day at Windsor Park Middle School indsor Park School, Uttoxeter, pupils and staff supported Red Nose Day with a non-uniform day dressing in all the colours of the rainbow! The day started with our Office Team (staff) selling the red noses in the school pavilion. During the day there were many sweepstakes, jokes, sponsored silences (which the staff welcomed!!!), pupils sponsored to wear PJ’s all day. During house assemblies there were: • Peter Kay impressions • Holby City sketches • Imitation dance scenes from Keith Lemon and Paddy McGuiness (boys dressed as girls) ha-ha • Quizzes where The Head of Haddon – Mr Stirrup failed to answer Y5 science questions and got the shaving foam treatment!!! See pics • In Chatsworth House children were encouraged to raise money to reveal pictures of their Head of House covered by a grid. Pupils raised enough to reveal 15 squares to see Mr Thomas with long hair in the 1980’s. Hilarious. • More seriously all houses watched the website stories and voted where they would like their donations to go to. Windsor Park total is over £500 so far and still counting!...

MUM and daughter are continuing to do a sterling job in raising funds for Staffordshire’s Air Ambulance. Margaret Woodward and daughter Kala Fuller have once again produced a sell-out charity night at JCB Lakeside featuring the ever popular Mark and Neil Clay, aka Elvis Presley and Neil Diamond. A cheque presentation took place recently when Margaret and Kala gave £1,610 to the Air Ambulance at the family business, L. G. Woodward Ltd, in Balance Street, Uttoxeter. Over £7,000 has been raised by the pair over the last few years which is a fantastic achievement. Kala told the Voice: ‘Thankfully neither mum or I have needed the services of the Air Ambulance but we both feel it is such a great charity and it is totally reliant on donations as there is no government funding. ‘I would like to thank everyone who has supported our charity events and also to Mark and Neil who always put 110% into every performance and it is clear to see that they really enjoy performing as much as we enjoy watching and listening. Staffordshire Air Ambulance no doubt acknowledge all the tremendous dedication put in by Margaret Woodward and her daughter Kala and its great to see a local family doing their bit for such a worthy charity.

Uttoxeter’s Most Charismatic Solicitor A few bizarre decisions ollowing a Trial at a Court in the south of the County when my Client was rightly, on the true facts of the case, convicted as the “Lookout” in a domestic burglary, but for all the wrong reasons, given the ludicrously lenient Sentence that followed, I later enquired of the Court Clerk how such a thing could happen. “Oh”, he retorted without a moment’s hesitation, “Sure the Prosecution could not prove on the evidence before the Court that your Client had done anything but you could not prove that he hadn’t”. Whilst, generally, my faith in the judgment and other abilities of Lay Magistrates has generally been unerring a particularly annoying facet, as per the case which I have just mentioned, could occasionally be that if in doubt then they would give the benefit of it to the Prosecution but then pass such a silly Sentence that now one would ever dream of lodging an Appeal. How about this one then – again well away from Uttoxeter. When returning a verdict of ‘Guilty’ following a Trial the Bench handed out an exceedingly soft Sentence immediately followed then by the Defendant, clearly counting his blessings, misguidedly smirking. The Chairperson reaction was both immediate and highly embarrassing, “Well you can just wipe that smile off your face. If we had really thought that you had done it the Fine would have been twice as much”. One of my favourite recollections was immediately after the acquittal of a shoplifter following my first trial before a newly appointed Stipendiary (Professional/Paid) Magistrate - District Judges as they are now called. Even at thetime I thought that my Client probably was guilty but the

Prosecution had messed it up. District Judges are invariably street wise, they do not miss a trick in Court and they certainly do not mince their words especially when lawyers are time wasting or don’t know what they are doing (and sadly nowadays there are some amongst us of that ilk). As the Judge found in favour of my Client and thus confounded the Prosecution who had thought throughout that they were on to a winner (and made the mistake of showing that in Court) he issued the following salutary enjoinder to my Client as were about to leave the Court Room. “Mr. X take Mr. Glandfield over to the XXX Pub and buy him a triple malt whiskey. You, Mr.Glandfield, whilst you are sipping the nectar explain to your Client that it is one thing to know it, but quite another to prove it”. Damn right he was too! To conclude these reminiscences should there be those of you who ask,” How can you defend a guilty person?” my answer is this. I am NOT the “Judge or Jury” or the arbiter of guilt or innocence. We are all of us innocent unless and until either we properly admit to something or we are proved to be guilty That said I might advise someone to plead guilty if the case against that person was so strong as to render a trial pointless. I have always tried to tell Clients what they need to hear and if that is the same as what they want to hear then that is a bonus but I would never sacrifice the former for the latter. Only once in my career has someone come in and said, “I am guilty but I want you to get me off”. I immediately showed that person the door and would do so again should the need arise. See you in Court. John E.Glandfield

Uttoxeter & District U3A he Uttoxeter and District U3A continues to attract new members on a regular basis. However, we are not complacent and are keen to continue our success, so if these little articles attract your interest please make a note of the details below and get in touch. We are driven by our members and will try to accommodate any reasonable requests for new groups. Do you have any ideas? We also enjoy other activities and during the last few weeks for example we have visited Hopton Manor to see their wonderful display of snowdrops. The History group took a trip to Gladstone pottery museum and had a guided tour of this extremely interesting old pottery. For anyone who has no knowledge of what life was like in the old pottery factories this visit was quite an unsettling experience. The photograph shows the group arriving for the tour. We have also enjoyed visits to the Garrick Theatre in Lichfield to see plays and the ballet Coppelia and of course we continue to benefit from our programme of pub lunches. It is worth mentioning that all being well some of our groups will have a presence at the forthcoming Flourish festival in Uttoxeter. This will be an opportunity to learn a little more about some of our activities and to meet some of the people who find the U3A such a positive benefit to their third age. As usual, if you wish to know more about us you have three options:-

Povey’s People By Radio Stoke’s Owd Grandad Piggott Each month Radio Stoke’s Owd Grandad Piggott (Alan Povey) will write a unique insight into our local life and its many characters. His infectious, humorous slant on people provides a different and unusual mix which hopefully will bring a warm smile to the faces of our readers.

Return of the Sun! U

ttoxeter hosted its first May Festival in 2007 for probably over 250 years. After a late cancellation on 2008 the festival is back on track for 2009 and hopefully every year from then onwards. Certainly there has been little in the way of traditional may festivities in the town since the war at least. Alongside the Festival was what was originally know as the Gay Boys Market, a spring get together for farmer and landowners looking to recruit seasonal workers and sell all manner of goods, even bicycles! In days gone by the may pole would be cut from the local woods and paraded into the town or village centre, there it would be prepared an decked with flowers and ribbons and blessed by a priest. The traditional dances would take place with a free wheeling crown or fixed, when the commonly known plaiting of the ribbons would take place - the tightness and neatness of the

30

plaiting would predict the type of harvest that year and the general prosperity of the community. Beltaine May Day exists in older traditions again as a celebration of the ‘return of the sun’ and many familiar characters such as the Green man and the May Queen. It is a fire festival and the Beltaine bonfires are at lit at pagan festivals - jumping over them or between gives good luck. Beltaine is one of the three “spiritnights” of the year when the faeries can be seen it is said. At dusk, twist a rowan sprig into a ring and look through it, and you may see them… A whole day of festivities would usually ensue to celebrate the coming of Summer and to promote fertility and general prosperity of the community. Some established modern day festivals span entire weekends. Jack O’ the Green A well known character at most My Day events would be Jack ‘O the Green or the Green Man,. He appears in many Spring legends and myths and his origins and symbolism are varied. The most common understanding of him is that he is the Spirit of Summer. At May Festivals he is generally taken out of his Winter hiding place and taken to the May Pole where he, or at the least last years tired spirit is slain to release a new and vigorous energy for the coming year. But he isn’t

keep my street cred, I hid the parcel of sandwiches. After five or six weeks stuffed behind the seat of a coach in mid summer, however, corned beef doesn’t smell like corned beef anymore…it smells like a carrier bag full of old trouser behinds and dead rats. The day Mr Copeland’s forehead wiper traced the offending smell and speculated as to the ownership of the contents of the bag, our little lot were in the clear. Peter Downes, our leader was fiercely adamant that no one in an organisation of vegans and vegetarians would ram a parcel of corned beef sandwiches behind the seat of his coach and after some thought, Mr Copeland’s forehead wiper believed him. After the day of the protest march, Simon Stansmore became impossible to shake off. He pestered hell out of me, phoning me incessantly in his staccato whine and bombarding me with articles on animal atrocities, factory farming and wanting me to go with him to rescue some beagles that were being made to smoke Capstan Full Strength somewhere in Northamptonshire. One day, he turned up at my house at a greatly unopportune time. The then Mrs Povey told him pleasantly that I wasn’t in – I was fishing down the canal with several of the village kids. With four foot strides, the angular six foot odd of him came flotting down the towpath in his oversized sandals and gave me a severe lecture on how fish can feel pain. That night in the pub, I had a horrendous row with the local village vet who was a member of the local shoot and who couldn’t justify why he shot an innocent creature dead in the morning and spent hours trying to stitch another animal together in the afternoon. Easy. He got well paid because the latter animal was a pet. But that was it! I packed in being an animal activist. I simply hadn’t got the will not to eat corned beef sandwiches, the energy or the clout to change the world and the way it thinks. These days, I stick to rescuing battery hens, grabbing them just before they get carted away by the dog food truck and letting them live a civilised life in daylight for another few years at the bottom of the garden. I sell the eggs that they lay and give the money to S.A.D.P.A.W.S. which keeps my conscience clear in the belief that by and large, Owd Grandad Piggott inner such a bad owd sod. always slain. The May Queen The may queen is chosen prior to the festival or at it. She often takes part in the slaying of the green man and also chooses the May King from the assembled young men usually on the second day of two day festivals. Many different variations exist on the theme and function. Obby Oss There are many British May Festivals which revolve around the Obby Oss. The Obby Oss appears too in Morris Teams, usually in the form of a man on a toy horse. It also turns up with Mummers and Guisers, traditions thought lost now in Uttoxeter although evident in the 70’s and 80s. The Obby Oss of Padstow is a strange site, huge and black with a giant skirt under which it tries to catch fleeing maidens and children. In other area the Obby Oss carries a staff, touching which gives good luck and fertility. Our very own Mayfest Obby Oss will make its first appearance this year - seeking maidens and children to devour under its skirts and carrying that lucky staff to lure them in. This year will see more traditional dancing around the May Pole accompanied by live local folk music and lots more music and dancing. It’s a great spectacle and its entirely free. So come and join us and celebrate the return of the sun on Bank Holiday Monday, 4th May 2009 at Uttoxeter Market Place between 11am-5pm. www.uttoxetermayfest.moonfruit.com

ince the opening of the hugely successful Heath House Tea Rooms in Caverswall Old Road, Forsbrook, staff have been collecting and saving all their gratuities they have received as they wished to donate them to local charities and help some people less fortunate than themselves. The culmination from this marvellous gesture was cheque presentations to Dr Sule (Cancer Research, University Hospital and Keele University), Louise Davies (Dyslexia Association Staffordshire) and Christine Hunter (Donna Louise Children’s Hospice Trust). All these 3 charities each received a cheque for £500 - fantastic!! Heath House Tea Rooms owners Arthur and Sue Doherty are justifiably proud of their staff and they said: ‘We would like to thank our wonderful staff for being so thoughtful. We would also like to sincerely thank the readers of The Uttoxeter & Cheadle Voice who we know have donated a large amount of this money. Magical Adventures in Cheadle he annual C.A.T.S. (Cheadle Amateur Theatrical Society) pantomime which was presented at the ‘Community Theatre’ Cheadle was another success. This year’s production, ‘The Magical Adventures of Sinbad the Sailor’ once again written and directed by Alan R Price, was well received by the appreciative audience. The production was very colourful. There were fantastic costumes, excellent scenery and plenty of audience participation. Dame Ethel Oops (Ian Wood) and her son Ali (Warren Leese) were a formidable double act. Justine Cope, a new member to the society, took on the title role of ‘Sinbad’ and played it superbly. Alan had seen her play the role of ‘Principal Boy’ many times so had no hesitation in casting her opposite his ‘Principal Girl’ (Yasmin) who was played by Victoria Wood. Caroline Stokes, who has been in every one of Alan’s pantomimes, played the wicked ‘Vamperia’ and Diane Atkinson played ‘Delilah’. Diane was also the choreographer for the C.A.T.S. dance routines. Together with the other members of the society, both junior and senior, they put on an excellent performance. This was Alan’s fourteenth pantomime for C.A.T.S. and the twelfth that he has written. After the show Alan said “Sinbad was the first pantomime that I wrote for the society, so I decided that it was about time that I did it again. This time however, because our pantomimes have improved immensely since then, it was a much better production. The team of members (approximately 70) involved in putting on the show were to be congratulated for all their hard work.” Although, due to the recession, attendance was down on previous years, Alan thanked those members of the public who had been able to find the time and the money to come to the show, for their continued support. C.A.T.S.’s next production is ‘Hobson’s Choice’ in October at the Community Theatre, Cheadle.

Let The Voice Be With You By Les Humphries ell since the last issue of the Uttoxeter and Cheadle Voice, the Cheadle Arts Festival has taken place. It culminated with a concert in the Cheadle Methodist Church on April the 4th, the same day as Uttoxeter Rugby Club took the League title so a full day for yours truly. The concert proved to be a huge success with all of the proceeds going to charity, and the church was packed to the rafters, with many diverse local acts entertaining the audience. Kicking off the proceedings were a mixed group of ladies and gentlemen, under the name of Not Strictly Barbershop, who wowed the audience with a selection of American numbers getting everyones feet tapping. This was followed by the Alton concert Handbell Ringers, who’s technical expertise included musicals, classical and religious tunes, which are easy on the ear, and took the concert up to the interval. The second half was opened by the Pugin Singers who are a mixed choir of great technical ability, providing a wealth of sound in both their religious and comic sections which left everyone spellbound. By the time the Churnet Valley Male Voice Choir took the stage it was approaching 10pm and the end of a long programme. But we were well received , despite everyones bum having gone to sleep after 4 hours on hard benches, and our programme of Hymns, Pop and Jazz numbers got a great response. If some of our members looked familiar, it’s because several of them had sung with the Barber Shop group! All in all a splendid evening to round off what had been for me an enjoyable day. An old chum of mine from my shop steward

He gave me a ring out of the blue, we had a chat, he came to the next rehearsal at the Bishop Rawle School in Cheadle and he has now signed on as it were. So anyone else out there, as I keep saying, turn up on a Tuesday night at 7.30, who knows, like Dave you might take a shine to us and join the ranks. When you perform in concerts like the Cheadle Arts Festival it makes it even more worthwhile. At St. Michaels Church Rocester, the congregation seems to grow by the week now that the children are included with their Rise and Shine Club on Sunday mornings during the service. They move into the back room where they are presided over by out youth leaders who are Susan Maiden Dalton, Sue Davies,Wendy Ward, and Frank Dalton. The group started two months ago, and has steadily increased in numbers, recently raising £150 for Comic Relief by way of a cake stall. By the time this issue goes to press they will have performed a play on Easter Sunday in Church, great to see youngsters in church again, and doing something useful and constructive whilst having

religious teaching, and don’t forget the mother and toddler group on a Thursday afternoons between 1.30 and 3.00pm. We recently said a sad farewell to two of our Church regulars, Vivienne Ralphs and George Brown, who both passed away following illness. Vivienne, together with her daughter Jane have been stalwarts of our church ever since I joined the congregation. George, a former bell ringer before ill health got the better of him had also been a member of the Denstone branch of the Royal British Legion, so together with my Legion colleagues we paraded with the Standard at St. Michaels at his funeral service. Both will be sadly missed. See you next time, Les

Ginny’s Gardening Guide By Uttoxeter’s Ginny Gibson his is such a great time to be in the garden; the clocks have changed so we get longer to be out there, although the fear of frost hasn’t quite passed. My granny used to say, “never cast a clout till May be out”, I think she may have been referring to both people and plants. I am an amateur gardener who is doing a yearlong training placement in a local garden and I thought I would share some of my adventures. What I would like to do is tell you what I will be working on each month, give you a tip from the local allotment holders and then feature a plant for the month; this will be a recommendation from a local garden centre. In the garden we mulched everything at the end of March and so the annual weeds don’t have a chance but of course those weeds with the tape roots have still survived, so getting dandelions and docks out is key at the moment. I have found that if I use a tool that is similar to an apple corer that gets most of the roots out. Drive it straight down the middle of the plant and then twist and pull. We will be pruning Ewe in the garden; plus Rhododendrons and at home I am starting to put my seeds in trays to create some summer colour in between the shrubs that I have inherited from the

previous owner. This is the first time I have done this, so am not expecting a great show, but who knows. For my first attempt I am trying Brachycome- Bravo, they are daisy like flowers but need well-drained soil when planting out. Lobelia - Riviera, I haven’t covered these with compost in the seed trays and they will go out in sunny position in May. Campanula - Pearl White, these I

should have sown in February to plant out in April, but will keep them in the propagator until all fear of frost has passed. In the allotment, Maria Peate and her son Jenson (only 3 and a gardener already !!!!!) gave me the following tips for April. When planting potatoes put soaked newspaper in the trench and then put well-rotted muck with the earth and then the potatoes, make sure the manure is well rotted or it will scorch the potatoes. Also now is the time to go foraging for wood/anything to use to build things on the allotment. Maria was building cold frames from an old metal bed frame the day I met her at Alexandra Crescent allotments in Uttoxeter. The plant of the month for April is Pieris – most people know it as Flame of the Forest, and Brian Spencer at Paradise Nurseries in Winnothdale Nr Tean showed me a huge range of them and recommended that they are wonderful at this time of year. They like acid soil though, so put in a pot if you don’t have that in your beds. The flowers come up like a sprig of bells like, they are not fast growing but having variegated leaves makes a great statement before other things are really showing. Happy Gardening.

He will be delving into his thoughts to remember all the terrific players in years gone by whilst selecting those who are exceptional in our present day.

It should be a fantastic talking point in our community and no doubt you all will have your views on ‘Razzer’s Hall of Fame team. Razzer’s Hall of Fame April Team REG CROSBY Uttoxeter St. Mary’s A top local keeper in his era, Reg was held in high regard by everyone in local football.

PAUL CROFT Rocester

JIM GROVES Bamfords

Always a rock at the heart of the defence, Crofty was the epitome of a player who always gave his all.

Jim was a classy full back who always seemed to have time on his side and great vision.

RON PLANT Kingstone

JACK MADDEN Rocester A quality player who proved to be one of the area’s most outstanding midfielders.

TOM LOMAS Uttoxeter Town What a player to have next to Paul Croft in Tom Lomas who also was a 100% player. I can just see the faces of forwards who would have had to come against this pair for 90 minutes – sheer fear!!

TED LOWELL Cheadle

GRAHAM DODD Bamfords Fiercely competitive and an excellent organiser of the back four.

OWEN LEGGETT Tutbury Hawthorns

Quick, skilful, Owen Ted was one of Cheadle’s finest proved to be a real A real workhorse in the players and when he was thorn in the side of full centre of midfield, Ron used snapped up to play for Derby backs who just couldn’t to graft for the entire match County it was no surprise. He catch him! and always gave his very would have been picked for any best in every match. local team because of his superb talents and outstanding flair.

MIKE ‘SLOTTER’ EDE Uttoxeter Amateurs 100% grafter, great goalscorer and a non-stop no-nonsense centre forward, Mike would go through a brick wall if he thought he had a chance of hitting the back of the net.

DAVID TIDESWELL Uttoxeter Town Very fast and hungry for goals, Dave was a tremendous forward for the Town and he always gave defenders a torrid time. One of the town’s best strikers. We have inserted one football club each player has performed for. Obviously, many have played for several clubs in their careers.

Nigel Titterton selects his Hall of Fame team with the emphasis on the greatest players in the Uttoxeter area in years goneby. Goalkeeper - Peter Swanwick (Rocester FC) Without doubt one of the finest keepers ever seen at Rocester, Pete had it all, athleticism, quick reactions, shotstopping ability and of course courage. Right Back - John Charlesworth (Uttoxeter Town) Genuine defender who could play anywhere along the back four. Forwards didn’t get much change out of John whichever position he has was in. Left Back - Roger Croft (Wheatsheaf Athletic) Classy full back with the capacity to read the game so well. Always gave wingers a hard time and he would compliment this back four superbly. Centre Halves - Steve Blood (Rocester FC) It seems most of the Blood family have been picked for the Hall of Fame teams so I couldn’t leave out my old mate Steve! Not blessed with a lot of talent but typified the fighting spirit needed for a successful team. Barry Wain (Wheatsheaf Athletic) I have had to pick one of the area’s best central defenders to look after Steve!! Barry was simply a colossus in the middle of the back four, one of the greatest defenders ever to have come out of Uttoxeter. Right Wing - Johnny Welsh (Wheatsheaf Athletic) A truly gifted player who was at home on the right wing or in midfield. John made things happen during a match and could create the ultimate pass. Inside Right - Pete Douglas (Uttoxeter Town) In any successful football team there has to be a ball-winner and a player who would fight to the death for the cause! For anyone who has played against Pete they know what I mean, for those who played with him they were relieved!! Inside Left - Kevin Spink (Elkes) I remember playing against Kevin many years ago and he was a wonderfully talented individual who could make the ball talk. Lovely passer of the ball, fantastic vision, a great player. Left Wing - Micky Ratcliffe (Uttoxeter Town) Terrific player who could produce outstanding pieces of skill whilst also ‘mixing it’ with the opposition. ‘Ratter’ was a great competitor and he would be an important part of this hall of fame team. Centre Forwards - Vin Bloor (Wheatsheaf Athletic) Fantastic goalscoring record for the Sheaf, Vinnie didn’t much care how he got the ball into the back of the net as long it went in! Brought fear to defenders who knew they had been in a game against Vin! Mick Collins (Rocester FC) There has got to be a place for Uttoxeter’s best marksman. Mick could score goals in any sphere because he had the knack of being in the right place at the right time. What a terrific strike force - Vin Bloor and Mick Collins… Substitutes: Barry Alcock (Rocester FC) Tremendous goalkeeper. Graham Eley (Rocester FC) Very talented midfield player. Mick Ring (Wheatsheaf Athletic) Terrific player who could play in most positions.

On and off the field By Alan Smith Alan Smith has enjoyed a lifetime of sport in the Cheadle and Uttoxeter areas. Here Alan delves into his memory bank to write his unique brand of humour on colourful sports and life comments with memories of past and present which we hope readers will enjoy... ell here we are again, another month gone and believe it or not the better weather is on the way and about time too. I don’t know about you but these dark winter months do drag on and hasn’t it been cold – must be a sign of ageing, hope not!! I recently spoke to someone who was asking about the best football players I’d had playing for me and I was telling them about taking over from Bob Bassett as Rocester FC 1st XI Manager. At that time I really fancied myself as a local Brian Clough, his style as regards team discipline, time keeping, respecting officials, traits which you think could never be associated with my playing days were to become the main reason I had and my teams in the future were to have a lot of success. But I can still see Barry Hulton’s face my club captain at Rocester and surely one of the best players around not to make a pro, when we met up for our first Premier League fixture of the new season. We had a couple or so of old heads in Barry, Keith Hibberd, brother Leon and the fantastic goalkeeper Swanno, Peter Swanwick, a quiet gentle guy off the field but you’d be surprised when I tell you he was a real toughie on it both verbally and physically and the remainder were made up of Cheadle Youth Club lads that my cousin Ivan Harvey had reared and when I say lads they really were lads!! But boy could they play, perhaps the best of them was a lad called Colin Kersley, a beanpole of a boy but very, very quick and a tremendous eye for goal – Dave Bevans and Deka Roberts were on the wings, two excellent players – Dave was to give me his loyal support for years to come. Then there was Nigel Titterton, Andy Coleman, Dave Shufflebotham, also very talented players. But I’d heard about this young lad who was getting rave reviews and I thrust him in the team also, we had to have someone to protect these young lads and I had the perfect man in Beano, Pete Dixon,

W

he would genuinely kick his granny for the cause! But back to this young lad I was talking about, Johnny Jackson was his name, a 16 year old who was definitely destined to be a top player and with luck earn himself a good living doing it. Injury was to ruin his dreams through! One day we met at Cheadle for an away fixture at Baddeley Green, the lads did not disgrace themselves and if my memory serves me right we lost 3-0, a result we would reverse later on that season at Vale Park as this side of smashing guys went on to win the final of The Premier Cup against the Green, our first success as a team and manager. The following season we were again successful in the cup comps winning the local Uttoxeter Cup which at that time was a still a good cup to win. I’ll never forget that day as we played our neighbours and rivals Uttoxeter Town on their own pitch at Bamfords Oldfields in the final, I had watched them in the semi final despatch Ipstones with consummate ease and knew we would have a battle. I had a beer and was within earshot of their plans to destroy those young upstarts from Rocester FC. I heard Ken Wain saying various things about my side and in doing so had formed my cup final pre match talk although I embroidered Ken’s remarks up a little. By the time we were ready to take to the field on final night Dartmoor wouldn’t have held my lads in, they came out of the dressing room and hammered them 4-0! A game which some of their players agreed was a real thumping, one of which was Pete Douglas. Now Dougy and I never got on when playing against one another. Against us on that final night for Uttoxeter Dougy was superb and that decided me to forget disagreements and go offer him to come to Rocester. I never thought perhaps there may be more opposition in the Douglas household, but Dougy’s wife Linda hated me also and the telephone call went something like this: ‘Hello, is Pete in,’ I said ‘Who’s that’ was the reply from this gentle female voice.

‘Alan Smith, Rocester Football Club,’ I said. ‘Alan who,’ not obviously believing her own ears. ‘Alan Smith’ I repeated. The silence was deafening, seconds which seemed like minutes passed before I heard that gentle female voice definitely decibels louder shout ‘Pete, that Smithy wants you from Rocester.’ I don’t think Linda could force herself to call me Alan. ‘What does he want,’ I could hear Pete say in the background! ‘Hello, what’s up with you,’ Dougy said, and I replied ‘Pete, you were superb against us in the cup final, I never liked playing against you because you don’t know the word defeat. Will you come and play for me?’ Then, expecting a tirade or something I was overjoyed when Pete said yes and we, including Linda, have been great friends ever since. Football is a funny old game as Jimmy Greaves used to say but I have made many many friends from the game and I know some of you are saying I bet he made more enemies!! Well, now you say that, there was a guy who’s named deserts me at the moment but I recall playing against this side for Boltons in the semi finals of the Staffordshire Cup at Leek Town, Roebuck I think the side were and I’d had a run-in with a couple of their players as you do and one tackle left my opponent badly hurt. Well about 30 years later I was having a nice quiet Sunday night pint in a pub in Hartshill when this guy came across and said ‘Smithy isn’t it?’ I said yes but what’s your name. he then told me the last time he’d seen me was when they took him to hospital with a broken leg. Well you could imagine how I felt but his next words were of great comfort. He said he’d try to do me and unfortunately came off worse breaking his own leg. We had another beer together, kicked one another jokingly, laughed and shook hands!! I’ll just finish this month’s column by telling you of a letter Nigel gave to me from John Shaw’s wife, she kindly told me of the whereabouts of Kenny (Banjo) Coates, he is now a cabaret artist living in Crete and about to release a new CD! There’s no end to the talents of these coloured guys you know – I’ve just got to find mine!! Well, until next time, take care, Smithy

Cheadle Spring 5 Road Race headle Running Club, sponsored by Derek Fower Transport and Weaver Fencing, held their annual 5 mile road race. The race entered a new era with local firm Weaver Fencing Ltd taking over as the main race sponsors. Before the start of the race the runners paid their respects by observing a minute’s silence for Cheadle Running Club member Jane Richards who finally lost her long and brave fight against cancer. In near perfect conditions for distance running a new course record was set by Tom Humphries of Cannock and Stafford A.C. Humphries smashed the former course record of 24.50, held by Andrew Aked of Rotherham Harriers, slicing a massive 26 seconds off, with his time of 24.24. For the second year running former winner Phil Hoole of Rotherham Harriers had to be content with second place in a time of 25.09. Mark Powell of Owls A.C. was third in 25.34. The ladies race was won for the first time by Ruth Watchorn-Rice of Cheadle R.C. in a time of 30.45. Having finished second on three previous occasions this was a very sweet victory for Ruth,

C

who was crowned Senior Sportsperson of the Year at the Cheadle and District Sports Council Awards last Thursday evening. The battle for second place was very close with Nicki Nealon of Huncote Harriers A.C. just edging out former winner Rebecca Harrison of Cheadle R.C. Nealon finished in a time of 31.02 to beat Harrison by just 6 seconds. There was further success for the host club with a brilliant run from Kelvin Amos, who finished ninth overall and first MV50. In so doing he set a new MV50 age group record with his time of 28.40. Russell Williams who came home in a time of 31.26 took the MV45 title. Another age group record was set by Maurice Oldham of Manchester Harriers who won the MV55 category with a time of 29.40. The MV60 category was won for the fourth year in a row by Cheddleton runner Stan Winterton, who runs for Trentham R.C. Cheadle Running Club Chairman Mick Beardmore said he was again highly delighted at the quality of the field that the run continues to

attract, with runners travelling from far and wide to compete. He also expressed his thanks to the new main race sponsors Weaver Fencing, as well as Stoddards Coaches and Derek Fower Transport, who have supported the race since its inception. Special thanks also go to the many people who marshalled the event, as well as St. John Ambulance and RAYNET who helped out around the course. The next race to be staged by Cheadle Running Club will be the Cheadle 4, which is being held on 12th July 2009. Cheadle Running Club times: 9th Kelvin Amos 18th Ruth Watchorn-Rice 21st Rebecca Harrison 24th Russell Williams 107th Sue Baker 109th Rachel Beardmore 110th Darren Bourne 111th Denise Beattie

See you at the far post! By Mick Cullerton t is now approaching the crunch time of the football season for our local clubs and not only in terms of results on the pitch. The credit crunch will have its effects off the pitch commercially. Until now football has been shielded a little as probably 85% of commercial revenue was sold before the effects of the credit crunch took hold. Football I believe will feel the effects this Summer. It will be interesting to see what happens with season tickets and commercial activity. Stoke are however I believe a special case because of the Premier League. When commercial revenues can be as much as 40% of a club’s total income you can understand how that can impact on clubs ability to pay good salaries and therefore attract better players. Better players sell more season tickets, it is a never ending cycle, although for some clubs it might end sooner rather than later. I believe as many as 20 clubs are in serious financial difficulty and because of the banking situation I would not be surprised to see a major club disappear this Summer! If Newcastle United go down, their players all have Premiership contracts with no dispensation for relegation. Without the Premiership monies, in Newcastle’s case about £60 million, I believe they could go into administration. After some of the daft things Mike Ashley has done I am sorry to say they deserve it. The Toon Army are amongst the most loyal supporters but like the Vale the directors keep making management mistakes. Payment for failure seems to be the norm these days with Sven Goran Erickson leading the way with three pay-offs for three failures! I am not a political person but you have to hand it to our bankers and politicians for showing us how it should be done with ridiculous expenses and pensions they award themselves. Can you believe that Parliament has a Select Committee to judge MP’s behaviour? Well who checks on the Standards Committee? I was told by Ted Smith that you

end up with the politician you deserve if you don’t vote. Well all I can say is that the level of leadership both locally and nationally is abysmal. Staffordshire Moorlands Council has actually won an award for doing what they achieved since they took over control which I feel is very little. They have talked and huffed and puffed but what have they actually done – nothing! The Cheadle car parking situation is a joke – and a bad one at that! Now Vodaphone are building a mast close to people’s homes because the SMDC appear to have not done their job properly as Vodaphone were not informed in writing in the allocated time that the plan had been turned down. Why are the people who fail in their jobs still in a job? Mind you in the Potteries they are paying a Chief Executive who is under investigation by the police and has stepped down from most of his responsibilities. Why don’t they suspend his pay until the investigations have been completed and pay him later if found not guilty? It seems they make the rules to protect each other. Tory, Labour, once they get into power they seem to forget why they are there in the first place, to represent their constituents. There are excellent MPs and local politicians but they appear to be few and far between. I don’t even know who represents us in the Staffordshire Moorlands or Cheadle Council as they don’t make themselves obvious on a day to day basis. Talking of standards and values it has taken an Italian with old fashioned discipline to sort out the England football team. From being a media circus they have turned into a decent international team, although I don’t see them as World Cup winners. He has changed the mentality of the team so that nobody feels secure about their place and he is definitely ‘The Boss.’ Gudjon Thordason has done something similar at Crewe Alexandra by being a manager, imposing discipline, fitness and a much stronger mentality, plus they now work a lot

harder and are much harder to beat. This leads me into the reason that Middlesborough, Sunderland and Crewe have struggled is because they appointed coaches and not managers. Bob Paisley was once asked ‘What is the difference between a coach and a manager?’ – his reply was ‘about 15 points a season!’ Coaches theorise, managers are much more pragmatic and want results. Coaches usually get closer to the players whereas managers in the main have to keep a line between themselves and the players. As standards in society seemed to have dipped with some children having no discipline I believe more than ever that football needs strong leadership to set a good example to society. I feel that this will also benefit the teams although Wayne Rooney’s antics may dispel this! I have jumped subjects on four occasions in this article but I feel that both the Government and the game of football are on a slippery slope unless they can instil proper standards and respect. Leadership is all about action and not words and I think it is about time that our political and football authorities start to lead by example. If

the average person was not quite truthful in their claims for expenses they may well be sacked. The Home Secretary does it and nothing appears to be done! Wayne Rooney elbows a player in the face and again nothing is done about it! These instances send all the wrong messages out – one rule for those at the top and another for the rest. By the time you read this article I hope that Stoke, Derby and Stafford are all safe from relegation. They have all had a fight on their hands this year. No-one outside of the Potteries, including me, gave Stoke a chance of staying up but they have stood together as a group and overall deserve to stay up. Next season will probably be harder for them as the second season always is. However because of the poor quality of the teams coming up from what I believe is the worst Championship for a few years, I believe they will survive again. Derby will have a clearout and will rebuild under Nigel Clough but I do not believe it is a one season job and they may have to wait another year for a promotion push. See you at the far post Mick Cullerton

‘Spike’s’ soldiers are champions! By Les Humphries ell, it went right to the wire, but Uttoxeter Rugby Football Club have at last shaken the monkey off of their backs and taken the Midlands Six East (NW) title, with an emphatic victory over their bogey side Tupton in what was their last League match of the season, played in front of a large and enthusiastic crowd at Oldfields on the 4th of April. The Town side have for several years looked the class act in the division, but with only one side gaining automatic promotion have always fallen just short over the past four seasons, usually finishing in a tantlising 3rd place(the 2nd placed side have a play off with a team from another division, Uttoxeter narrowly lost their four years ago). Not only did Uttoxeter win this years division title, but they won it in style with a try fest as the points show. Also the boot of Steve ‘Chopper’ Harris has kept the scoreboard ticking over in tight situations throughout the season. Skipper Andy ‘Spike’ Moult led from the front throughout the campaign, and has the deepest respect of the lads in the team, which is always important for the captain. Being both mentally and physically drained as he left the pitch following the Tupton game, the only printable words I could get out of him as he lit up a fag were “What can I say? the lads were superb!” Although the previous weeks 12 - 3 victory over fellow title contenders Nottingham Boots Corsairs was emphatic enough, it still left the town side with a game in hand, and despite a much superior points difference, still a point short of Dronfield who had finished their league campaign in pole position. Visitors Tupton are always a potential banana skin for any team, being a big side with little finess, but plenty of physicality, having narrowly beaten the town (in more ways than one), in the

W

away meeting, by 23 points to 21 earlier in the season. But on the day the further the match went, such was Uttoxeters superiority that as the match went on, the more the fight drained out of them, as they conceeded 47 points without reply. Spike had mentioned in the press during the previous week veteran scrum half Chris Owens importance to the side, and the fact that the No.9 was carrying an injury. “I would rather have an 80 percent Chris Owen in my side than not have him at all” was Spikes comment, and this was rewarded with a terrific performance by the Welsh Wizard whom scampered over for the towns first try after just eight minutes, and he continued to probe and dart around the set piece like a little terrier for the whole of the match. For the rest, a brace of tries apiece for Centre Lee Bloor, and flanker Miles Pilcher, one from centre Dan Turner, with the seventh being scored by young giant lock Tim Carr, outlining the blend of youth and experience in the side. The other 12 points coming courtesy of the boot of full back Steve Harris who missed only one conversion.

Exactly a month earlier Uttoxeter had taken their first silverware of the season, when they took the scalp of Leek from two leagues above them, when they claimed the Building Society Cup (pictured left) which paved the way for a superb series of results in March into April. After seeing Uttoxeter win the title, Club President Julian Beattie said “The lads got what they deserved, we look forward to next season.” I can only add well done lads you’ve been a joy to watch. It’s been a superb team effort throughout

the season, not only with your attacking prowess, but also your awesome defence which has seen you concede very few tries. Against Tupton even without the likes of regulars Tom Shooter, Pete Allen and James Williams the squad was still strong enough to fill the gaps. Donald Hayes and Glynn Wilson have done a great job building on Kelvin Edwards legacy, and combined with the one thing that can’t be coached - flair, it has proved a heady cocktail throughout, losing only two games at home all season - good luck next term lads.

The Grange search for a tennis star large dose of excitement is being served up at The Grange Lawn Tennis Club in Burton. A new tennis competition has been launched over the Easter break, masterminded by LTA Performance Coach Dave Barnes. With 15 years of coaching experience at county and national standards, and a record of producing high class young players, Barnes is offering free tennis coaching for a year to one lucky young player. The aim of the competition is to increase awareness of the game and to encourage young players of all abilities and experience to play tennis at The Grange. All youngsters who visit The Grange tennis club during April and May are eligible for the draw. No previous experience is necessary and complete beginners are welcome. The winner will be selected randomly by pulling a name out of the hat. Youngsters may attend one of the free events during May. A Family Fun Day is open to all on the 16th May, 3pm to 5.30pm. In addition there is a free coaching session on the 17th May, 2 – 4pm. Alice Southwell, 15, (pictured right) of Thomas Alleynes High School in Uttoxeter is a great ambassador for the Grange, and will be assisting at the tennis course. Alice joined the club last year, having represented Staffordshire County as a Junior Member. Trained and mentored from a young age by Barnes she is an experienced and talented player. Having competed regularly in inter-county competitions and major tournaments (including the Road to Wimbledon and the Fred Perry National Competition), she now plays for the Grange teams. Jane Bullivant, Chairman at The Grange is thrilled by the competition, and will be drawing the winning name. “Young players are the future of tennis in this country, and I’m delighted to offer this great prize. Children of all ages and abilities are warmly welcomed at The Grange, and have a great opportunity to learn the game and increase their tennis skills.” The Grange, established in 1882, is at St. Paul’s Square by the Town Hall. With both grass and hard courts it is an asset to all tennis enthusiasts. For more information about the Jane Bullivant, Chairwomen at events at The Grange, please contact the Junior Coordinator The Grange L.T.C. near the Town on 07986 466814. hall in Burton.
