Hartelijk gefeliciteerd met het behalen van uw bul. In 1983 studeerde ik zelf af in Groningen. Het was voor mij de feestelijke afsluiting van een geweldige periode. Studeren is, zeker als je er ruim dertig jaar later op terugkijkt, veel meer dan het opdoen van kennis. Het is volwassen worden en, vaak samen met je studiegenoten, ontdekken hoe de wereld voor jou in elkaar zit. Dat schept een band voor het leven, met andere studenten en met de universiteit. Ik hoop dat u met veel plezier terugdenkt aan uw studietijd en dat u er trots op bent en blijft dat u in het eigenzinnige Groningen heeft gestudeerd. Ook hoop ik dat u contact met ons houdt. ‘Ik studeerde Nederlands, maar dat ging niet goed. In de zomer zag ik de tentamenuitslagen hangen, dat ging toen nog met naam en toenaam, aan privacy deden ze niet. Ik had wéér een drie. Dit kon zo niet, besloot ik. Ik gaf mezelf de keuze: rechten of kunstgeschiedenis. Vanaf de Letteren faculteit aan de Grote Kruisstraat kwam ik langs kunstgeschiedenis in de Kijk in ’t Jat. Dus daar ben ik eerst naar binnen gegaan. Dat beviel goed, het was een klein, overzichtelijk instituut. I studied Dutch Language, but it didn’t go well. During the summer, I saw the exam results posted on the wall; full names were listed, privacy wasn’t done in those days. Another 3 out of 10. I couldn’t go on like this, I concluded. I gave myself a choice: Law or Art History. Coming from the Faculty of Arts in the Grote Kruisstraat, I passed the Art History department in the Kijk in ‘t Jat. So I went in there first. It suited me; it was a small and compact institute. ‘Ik heb in het eerste jaar van mijn studie geen moer gedaan. Ik heb alleen maar gefeest en ik had een eigen rockband. Ik kwam `s morgens rond een uur of één uit mijn bed om vervolgens de hele nacht door te feesten. Voor een natuurkundestudent was dit moeilijk te combineren met de studie. Daarna ben ik heel hard aan het werk gegaan om in een korte tijd al mijn tentamens te halen. ‘I didn’t do a single thing during the first year of my studies. I just partied and had my own rock band. I’d get out of bed around 1 p.m. and then partied again all night long. For a physics student, this was difficult to combine with the course programme. I worked really hard after that to pass all my exams in a short space of time. ‘Ik zat daar nog maar een paar weken toen ik met een technisch probleem bij prof. Wijnberg binnenliep. Ik kon resultaten uit het lab van de latere Nobelprijswinnaar prof. Cram uit Los Angeles niet reproduceren. Wijnberg hoorde mij aan, pakte de telefoon en belde Cram. Hij legde uit dat er een probleem was en gaf mij de hoorn. “Praat jij maar met hem.” Daar stond ik dan als studentje te overleggen met een van de grootheden van het vakgebied. ‘I had only been there a couple of weeks when I went to see Prof. Wijnberg about a technical problem. I couldn’t reproduce the results from the lab of Prof. Cram - the later Nobel Prize winner - from Los Angeles. Wijnberg listened to me, reached for the phone and called Cram. He explained to Cram that there was a problem, and then passed the phone to me. “You talk to him.” There I was, novice student, conferring with one of the greatest minds in the field. That gave me a huge kick.’ Ben Feringa is Professor of Synthetic Organic Chemistry. He received the Spinoza Award (the Dutch Nobel Prize) in 2004, and has been an Academy Professor at the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences since 2008. ‘In Groningen gingen de studenten alleen naar huis met Kerstmis, Pasen en in de grote vakantie. Ik herinner me dat mijn vader, nadat ik thuis een paar maanden niet gesignaleerd was, een lokale kolenboer vroeg om te kijken hoe het met zijn zoon ging. ‘Het motto van de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen is erg belangrijk. Ik denk dat we ons daardoor moeten laten leiden. Vertaald betekent het zoiets als: “Het woord van de goddelijke machten schijnt licht voor onze voeten.” Trek erop uit en werk positief op je omgeving. Richt je niet alleen op jezelf, maar probeer van deze wereld een betere plek voor iedereen te maken. Als er één groep mensen is die daar de beste uitgangspositie voor heeft, dan zijn het wel de afgestudeerden van de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen. Ik ben erg dankbaar voor mijn opleiding hier. Verenigingen
Een groot aantal faculteiten en vakgroepen van de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen hebben een eigen alumnivereniging, met activiteiten en diensten speciaal voor oud-studenten. Een overzicht van de verenigingen is te vinden op onze website.
Alumnikringen
Op verschillende plekken in Nederland en in de wereld komen oud-studenten van de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen een paar keer per jaar bij elkaar in Alumnikringen. Tijdens de kringbijeenkomsten is er alle ruimte om herinneringen op te halen aan de studietijd. Daarnaast geven de kringleden gezamenlijk steun aan een getalenteerde wetenschapper die zich internationaal onderscheidt. Zo komen gezelligheid en maatschappelijke betrokkenheid samen.
Nieuws
Als alumnus krijgt u gratis het alumnimagazine Broerstraat 5 toegestuurd met interviews met oud-studenten en het laatste nieuws over de universiteit en de wetenschap. Voor internationale alumni is er een speciale digitale nieuwsbrief. Ook op onze website vindt u nieuws over alumni, activiteiten en de universiteit.
Loopbaan
De universiteit en gelieerde instellingen bieden allerlei mogelijkheden op het gebied van postacademisch onderwijs, cursussen, bijscholing, loopbaanadvies, trainingen, vacatures en stages.
Steun de RUG
De Rijksuniversiteit Groningen wil internationaal aan de top staan. U kunt ons hierbij steunen door bijvoorbeeld mee te helpen bij PR-activiteiten van de universiteit of uw ervaringen uit te wisselen met studenten tijdens een gastlezing. Maar ook door geld te geven voor bijzonder onderwijs en onderzoek, voor de ondersteuning van (internationale) beursstudenten of voor de faciliteiten voor topwetenschappers. Met uw hulp kan de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen bij de wereldtop blijven horen.

At various places in the Netherlands and around the world, former students of the University of Groningen come together several times a year to form Alumni Chapters. These chapters offer plenty of room for alumni to reminisce about their student days. In addition, the chapter members collectively provide financial support to a talented scientist who is internationally distinguished. A great opportunity to combine sociability with social engagement.

You can subscribe to the special digital newsletter for international alumni. Our website features news on alumni, activities and the university. The magazine Broerstraat 5 is also available for Dutch-speaking alumni.

The university and its affiliated institutions offer many different possibilities for post-academic education, specific classes, refresher courses, career advice, training, job vacancies and internships.
