FOREWORD Since becoming a charity over a decade ago, the ManKind Initiative continues to receive requests for information from other organisations that are unaware of the existence of other groups/organisations supporting male victims of domestic abuse. Consequently, there is now a growing awareness and recognition that men are domestic abuse victims too. This can be demonstrated by analysing the British Crime Survey as this critical research consistently shows that one in every three victims of domestic abuse are male. This equates to approximately 600,000 men every year that continue to suffer in silence. There is also now an enhanced awareness of their plight, supported by a recognition that the Equality Act 2010 means statutory authorities can no longer ignore the plight of male victims within their community. Subsequently, both legislation and an ever increasing demand for enhanced awareness provided the catalyst to produce the first directory in 2010, and this updated edition brings together both existing and new organisations to form a critical support network. Many of these are organisations that are enhancing their own services to include both female and male victims – a very welcome move. The aim of the directory is not only to help everyone in the domestic abuse sector (and the growing men and boys sector) be aware of the other organisations that exist, but more importantly, the ManKind Initiative sincerely hopes that this latest edition will continue to encourage collaboration and the spread of best practice, expertise and experience. We have asked volunteers to produce this directory hence it is available completely free of charge – in the spirit of being a charity. We hope that you find this updated directory useful. Should you wish to add and/or amend any information please do not hesitate to contact us (see page 2). Subsequently, please feel free to circulate the directory to your colleagues and other professionals. I would like to thank our policy and research volunteer, Elizabeth Hopkins for her skill, patience and determination in putting this together, and, to all those who returned the questionnaires. Lastly, I would like to thank you all for supporting male victims of domestic abuse and for the life changing support you provide to all victims, the difference you make cannot be summed up in mere words. Mark Brooks Chairman The ManKind Initiative
