Hi all,

There’s only a few weeks to go until we get together again for Let’s Talk and Let’s Socialise! It’s been a great first half of 2019, and we’re looking forward to you joining us at the Pavilions for a bumper Let’s Talk on 26th June where Des will be sharing the successes for the Bravo Group so far and what the second half of the year has in store for the Group. Simon will be providing an update on the all-important financials; Richard Pitt will be giving an update on member services; Dan will be looking at the fantastic relationships with our insurer partners; Cancer Research will be joining to talk about the amazing work they do, and of course, the My Friend Wants to Know cards will be back! At the last Let’s Talk session, we asked you to get into huddles and tell us what we do well and where we could improve a little. Following some of your feedback, we’re now going to be running a regular spotlight on feature, focusing on a different team in each edition of Our Voice, starting at the beginning of the alphabet with Agency! Also, at Let's Talk Rachel Longbottom from the Learning Network will be shining a light on her team. Yours,

Beth

Perfect Imagine Your

Insurance World...

We asked some of the Bravo Executive team how they would change the industry if they were granted three wishes.

1. For our industry to learn from our market sectors and adapt more quickly in terms of customer service, e-trade innovation, use of ‘big data’, and generally speaking, see more positive ‘disruption’ and evolution to the customers’ advantage. 2. To start empowering younger and emerging leaders to spearhead change and modernise industry thinking. 3. And, for the Bravo Group to be a ‘first mover’ on lots of the above points.

Des O’Connor, Group CEO 1. Continued improvements on gender equality. 2. More innovative marketing and communications across the industry. 3. Finally, I’d love to see the Bravo Group winning a Customer Champion Award for its efforts to vocalise the importance of regional independent broking!

Beth Ash, Group Communications Director 1. The removal of Insurance Premium Tax! 2. I’d like to see more people enter insurance from outside the industry. 3. It would also make an impact if we could attract more school leavers and graduates on apprenticeship schemes.

Simon Drew, Chief Financial Officer 1. I’d like to see insurers thinking about service delivery from the point of view of the customer, not as an internal measure. 2. Across the industry we could do better with delivering products and claims services that make people feel good about insurance, not mistrustful. 3. More diversity in leadership teams.

Dan McNally, Group Insurer and Products Director

1. More women at top executive level in the insurance industry. Whilst the balance is changing there are still too few women in the Board Room! 2. Better technological innovation, systems integration and digitisation. 3. Fewer e-mails and more personal interaction, which may feel counterintuitive with my second point. However, Point 2 is about efficiency and effectiveness and this point is about people. It is still a people industry.

Susan Adcock, Chief Operations Officer 1.

Banning email as a method of communication and only allowing it as a method of confirmation. 2. For insurers, brokers and customers to do what they said they would, when they said they would do it, for the right customer experience. 3. The benefit of hindsight in advance. 4. And an extra one – to attract more young talent into the industry.

Richard Pitt, Chief Network Officer 1. Ultimate transparency across the industry. 2. Consistency with premiums, underwriting ability, so that consumers are confident in insurance and see it as a driver to the economy, not an overhead. 3. A level playing field with professional minimum standards and no cowboys.

Richard Tuplin, Managing Director, Ethos Broking 1. Raising awareness of Talent opportunities through apprenticeships, learning and development and succession planning strategies, to help nurture and grow the insurance leaders of the future. 2. Supporting and encouraging the Insurance culture to put mental health at the centre of our businesses and to encourage colleagues to be open about their mental health – it’s ok not to be ok! 3. Paving the way for improved people focused policies ensuring equality for all – for instance we have recently enhanced our maternity and paternity policies to support colleagues in having valuable time with their families.

At our last Let’s Talk session, you asked us to shine a light on the different teams at BN. That’s why we’re introducing a Spotlight On feature in Our Voice to discover the ins and outs of each department. And we’re starting at the top of the alphabet with Agency!

Sharon Geelan Agency Team Manager

I’m a bit of a crazy cat lady, according the team. I took in a stray cat two years ago, who turned out to be pregnant, and now I have four cats!"

Teresa Curran Agency Administrator

I love to travel and photograph everything when I’m away. When I get home, I like to create memory DVDs of pictures from my trips.”

Aneta Rhymes Agency Administrator

10 years ago, I ventured into the world of essential oils and now make my own blends. My favourite at the moment is lemongrass and vetiver, which is great for destressing and helping you sleep.”

Tracy Leworthy Agency Administrator

I have two girls, Sophia and Georgia, and one boy, Charlie. The boy is the dog and he’s my favourite! I’m also active in my spare time and have run a marathon and countless half marathons.”

Helen Turbitt Agency Administrator

I like to go for long walks and love exploring the Lake District. I also love therapy treatments and I am a qualified masseuse.”

WE ASKED AGENCY TO TELL US THEIR ELEVATOR PITCH IN LESS THAN 60 SECONDS!

WHAT BIG PROJECTS ARE THE TEAM CURRENTLY WORKING ON?

When Members join Broker Network, a fundamental part of our role is to set up agencies and facilities to enable them to trade compliantly. For those without a background in the industry, an agency relationship is an agreement between the broker and insurer to allow Members to place business. We also ensure that the relevant Terms of Business Agreements (TOBAs), which are contracts between the insurer and the broker, are in place for Premier Members and Ethos Brokers. Currently we have around 700 different agreements! Another key responsibility for our team is to carry out different checks on insurers - financial checks, regulatory checks, data protection checks (checks, checks, checks) to give Members peace of mind on the markets they’re trading with.

Our focus at the moment is setting up agencies for new Members, in particular start up brokers, so they can start trading with the insurers. One Member has 100 agencies to set up – as you can imagine, this involves a lot of form filling! It’s our job to do as much as we can, so they don’t have to, which makes their life easier.

WHAT’S COMING UP FOR THE AGENCY TEAM THIS YEAR? We work across the Bravo Group and are currently assisting Ethos Brokers with consolidating their agencies and transferring them on to BNL TOBAs. We’re also setting up monitoring processes for the Compass team to give them insight on the financial and regulatory status of their Members and agents.

SMOKE ON THE WA DRAGON

s you’ll no doubt be aware by now, two teams of intrepid rowers ventured into the treacherous waters of Roundhay Park on Sunday 19th May to take on the waves, all in a bid to raise funds for one of our three worthy charities for 2019.

A

The scores on the doors at the end of the day for all three heats combined were 155.89 seconds for Noah’s Ark and 151.53 for Peter Pan. Noah’s Ark won the fastest heat with 71.81 seconds, but in the head to head race Peter Pan came out on top.

Noah’s Ark were pitted against Peter Pan’s crew, with each team manning a dragon boat in three heats throughout the day – one of which saw the teams in a head to head battle!

If you need a reason to give a little bit extra, the video below is surely entertaining enough to be worth a few pounds!

A QUICK NOTE...

We’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone at Broker Network for supporting Martin House by taking part in Leeds Dragon Boat Race. Your support makes an incredible difference to the children and young people who come to Martin House – and their families. Hitting your £2,000 fundraising target would pay for seven days of home-cooked meals for families staying at Martin House, prepared by our chefs. Lots of our families don’t get the chance to enjoy having a meal together, because of the care demands of looking after a poorly child, so it means a huge amount to them when they stay at Martin House to have that family experience.

60 SECONDS WITH...

What made you want to join Broker Network? I wanted to join a company that could match my own ambition. Broker Network has gone through some fantastic growth over recent years and that is set to continue. I really felt that the opportunity was too good to turn down. Describe your job in one sentence… I’m responsible for Bravo Group’s IT function which includes Infrastructure, Development and Security. What big projects are IT working on currently? The IT team are currently working on upgrading all our infrastructure, which includes our network and all our servers. We are also preparing for our business continuity test in the summer. What’s coming up for the IT team this year? We are currently looking to grow and expand the current team. The demand on IT has increased and we need another experienced person to join our team.

Our new Head of IT & Projects Richard King joined our family in April from First Locate in Leeds, so we naturally sat down with him to give him the traditional BN grilling. What’s your favourite book? The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins

Which word / food / smell can you not abide and why? Easy – marmite! Just no! You’re going to a desert island. Which three items do you take with you? A good beach towel, ice cold beer and some good music What’s your favourite joke? What does a pepper do when it’s angry? It gets jalapeno face! What three words would you use to describe your dancing style? Energetic, enthusiastic and drink-induced.

QUICK FIRE ROUND

When you’re not at Broker Network, where can we find you? Relaxing at home and indulging in anything related to Italian food and wine.

If you had to eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be? Without a doubt it must be a nice steak – cooked rare.

Something we never knew about Richard is… I love anything to do with cars, so I’m always reading or watching anything car related.

What was the first single you bought? Too Many Broken Hearts – Jason Donovan.

Cancer: Three Women,

ONE STORY O

ur three chosen charities support people every day and we wanted to shine a light on the people they have helped to show how the money we’re raising can really make a difference. In this month’s Our Voice, we’re sharing the story of three women in one family who all suffered from breast cancer. Lorraine Wyrill, a prescription clerk for the NHS, was only four years old when her grandma, Ollie, sadly died from breast cancer at the age of 48. Years later, Lorraine’s family was touched again by the disease, when her mum, Joan, was diagnosed with breast cancer in May 2017, aged 70. Following Joan’s diagnosis, her consultant suggested that Lorraine should have a routine mammogram as her mum and grandma had both suffered with breast cancer. Lorraine had the test and was recalled for further exams three days after on her dad’s birthday. She was diagnosed with breast cancer a week later on 4th October 2017 – the day after her wedding anniversary.

“My experience means I understand all too clearly why Cancer Research UK’s work is so important." Lorraine’s mum Joan had a full mastectomy as part of her treatment and was given the all-clear in July 2017. Lorraine had two lumpectomies, then a mastectomy, finishing her treatment by January 2018 – she was given the all-clear in November last year.

Lorraine adds, “As a family, we’re determined to do all that we can to help raise money for life-saving research so more men, women and Lorraine is 48 now, the same age her grandma children can survive cancer. Sadly, we’re saying goodbye to a few members of staff who are moving on to pastures new. This month, we said farewell to Bethany Jennings, who has set up her own events company. In June, we’re waving goodbye to Andrew Whiteley, who is moving to Dundee company Broker Insights as Head of Data Insight; Tania Hollands, who will be the new Strategic Relationship Manager at AXA; Joe Atcheson is going to work alongside his friend at TPSL (Technology Product Solutions Limited) in Harrogate as a Technical Engineer; Nicola Walton, who is joining the Yorkshire Ambulance Service to become a Paramedic; and Amanda Smith; who is retiring after almost five years at BN. As you may have seen in your inboxes, we’re also saying goodbye to Jenny Hemmings, who will be leaving us over the next few months to spend more time with her family. We thank them all for their hard work and are wishing them the best for the future.

We’re happy to be welcoming back Rachel Hutchinson, Senior Creative Designer in the Communications and Events team, and Maddy Burton-Cole, Learning and Development Executive in the Learning Network. I won’t be giving up though, the hills may have gotten the better of me this time… but I will be back to try again!”
