With the biggest event in the UK insurance broking calendar fast approaching, this month’s Networking News has a strong BIBA focus. The broking industry is fast-paced, and it’s been a busy start to 2019 already. A lot has happened here at the Network in the last 12 months and this will be the first time we’re at BIBA under the Bravo Group umbrella. Each year we welcome increasing numbers of delegates to the stand which is why this year we've moved to a prime location in the centre of the hall, so we can say hello to more of you.

The broker landscape is ever-changing, but our mission remains the same – to help Grow, Protect and Support independent brokers. This year, we’ve gone back to basics with BIBA to show how we can assist you and your business needs. Take a look at our top tips for getting the most from the event; we’ve also caught up with some of the Members going to BIBA to get the inside story on their schemes and products, in this month’s edition. pprenticeships Not just for 16 year olds...

FOLLOWING THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF OUR APPRENTICESHIP SCHEME AT BROKER NETWORK LIVE, GAIL BRAITHWAITE, OF LEARNING NETWORK, EXPLAINS HOW IT ALL CAME TO LIFE. We piloted apprenticeships with our own Broker Network staff, so that we could fully understand the process from both a learner and a business perspective. We also spoke to our Insurer Partners, Members, and Ethos Brokers to gain their advice. It’s been a long time in the making. RSA is the first Insurer Partner to back the scheme and will support 15 fully funded Apprenticeships across the Network. We’re excited the RSA team will offer additional support to onboard our learners including a visit to their London office (the Walkie Talkie building). This is an invaluable opportunity for regional brokers who are unlikely to get the chance to network in this manner, and therefore build those valuable connections. While we are restricted to 15 fully funded places at the moment, Members can still benefit from significant savings if they are not one of the 15 when they join the programme, as they will only pay 5% of the £7000 cost; the rest is co-funded by the Government. We’ve worked in conjunction with the CII Aspire programme and Babington to refine the offering. The CII offers gravitas and professionalism; and Babington truly understands our Network and has the training expertise we need. We’ve added to the standard apprenticeship to make it broker-specific. There are new interventions based on what we know brokers need; as well as modules on useful and relevant soft skills.

The programme will really bring the cohort together – giving those individual learners in each office the chance to learn and share experiences as a group. They’ll join with peers who will become connections for life and be able to build a robust network for the future. We’re passionate about investing in people and this is the perfect way to empower brokers to develop their careers. However, it requires serious commitment from both the employee and the employer, so it’s not a decision that should be taken lightly.

Myth 1: Aren’t apprenticeships designed for work experience or school leavers? Truth: Apprenticeships have come a long way in recent years and now represent high level training programmes, achieving professional qualifications that can suit all ages and levels of experience and are relevant for both existing and new staff.

Myth 2: The apprenticeship scheme is just for Premier Members. Truth: We’re delighted to say that the scheme is open to Advantage Members too.

Myth 3: If it’s free, I might as well sign up! Truth: While we would love to see our Members registering their interest, please remember – this is a significant commitment. An apprenticeship is an obligation for both the learner and the business for 18 months, not just for Christmas!

If not, then why not? You may dread the thought of workshops, speeches and bumping into people who you don’t know, but the best brokers go with a plan, execute their plan and use the experience for their own benefit.

BIBA is a unique event where thousands of brokers, insurers and suppliers come together to build relationships, ask questions and update their industry knowledge, so you should think about what you want to achieve from the experience. Before you go, set your intentions. Are you going to network or listen to seminars and absorb knowledge; start dialogue with an Insurer or MGA; do a deal with an insurer or supplier; increase your income; or reduce your costs? All can be achieved, but you must have a plan.

SCHOFIELD RAISING MONEY FOR MND IN FOUNDER’S NAME In memory of their founder, Michael Schofield, who sadly passed away from Motor Neurone Disease in 1994, the team at Premier Member Schofield Insurance Brokers (SIB) are raising money for the Motor Neurone Disease Association. To mark the 25th anniversary of his death, on Sunday 28th April, they undertook the Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge to raise funds for the cause, which is close to their hearts.

TOUR DE... EUROPE? Premier Member David Fryer at JM Glendinning Townends will be saddling up on 30th April as he cycles across Belgium, Holland and England in four days, covering an impressive 321 miles to raise funds for four worthy causes. Yorkshire Air Ambulance will receive 50% of the funds raised with the remaining 50% to be split between Kirkwood Hospice, Ruddi’s Retreats and the HTAFC Foundation Breakfast Club.
