BRITISH COLUMBIA PORTFOLIO FALL 2012
Foreword In September 1967, my father Carmine D’Onofrio opened the family shoe import business in earnest with the signature location on Vancouver’s Commercial Drive, the focal point of the city’s Italian community. With an unwavering dedication to quality, value and service, Kalena’s Shoes thrived. Over the years, many in the Italian community voiced their opinion that with the containers of shoes already coming over from Italy, perhaps the family business should expand to include wines from the homeland. After all, the selection of Italian wines in the market at the time did leave room for improvement. In 1991, Stile Wines was born. The name ‘Stile’ (pronounced ‘Stee-lay’ in Italian), corresponding to its English counterpart ‘style’, was chosen not only to represent the stylish wines that became part of the portfolio, but also to reflect the culture of incorporating wine stylishly as part of enjoying life to the fullest. Over time, the list of highly regarded Italian producers working with Stile grew, to the extent that Stile Wines became synonymous with Italian wine. To this day, we are proud to say that we offer one of the very finest portfolios of Italian wine in Canada. Along the way, we have strived to add products from reputable producers from all over the world, always keeping in mind our goal of offering the absolute best possible quality and value. While we will undoubtedly always be viewed as an Italian specialist, we can now lay claim to being a truly diversified, international importer. In fact, to better reflect our broadened product mix of wine, spirits, beer and refreshment beverages, we have reintroduced ourselves as ‘Stile Brands’. Our goal is to efficiently represent these brands, and to best market them to achieve broad public awareness, as we feel that brands of such quality deserve to be as well known and enjoyed as possible. My father passed away in 2005, but his spirit remains very much alive in all that we do. We are happy to know that the fine products that we bring to this special part of the world have brought joy and a real appreciation for the finer things in life to so many. With this in mind, we invite you to peruse the latest catalogue of fine offerings from our agency. Grazie e buon santé,
Carmen D’Onofrio Jr. Managing Director

Useful Ordering Information Please bear in mind the following information when it comes to ordering product through the BCLDB: Order product using the CSPC sku number, and specify your order in terms of the number of bottles (rather than cases) of a particular product, being specific that the units are bottles, so that there is no confusion about quantity. Order at the local government liquor store (GLS) that you have been set up to order through, or through Store 100, which is the Wholesale Customer Service Centre. This can be reached as follows: Telephone: Fax:
(604) 775-0681 (604) 252-3470
If the GLS sales associate indicates that there is zero stock, or no stock available, then ask them to click on their next screen page for the Container World warehouse inventory. Please note that ALL spec/restricted listings will show on the first screen as out of stock, or no stock available at the BCLDB warehouse, because it is a listing that is not usually warehoused by the BCLDB. It is only ordered as per client request. If the BCLDB sales associate informs you that there still is no stock, please contact your Stile sales representative to investigate further. The BCLDB will give you an order/invoice number with every order. Please keep this handy in case there are any difficulties with the order, as it will help us to assist. Products that are general or specialty listed should be available within two business days (or possibly immediately, if ordering through a GLS location that stocks it regularly). Products that are spec/ restricted listed should be available within 7—10 business days. If these products have not arrived over this time, please contact your Stile representative to investigate further. It is important to keep your Stile representative abreast of any difficulties that arise with ordering, as we are happy to assist and manage these through. It may alert us to a problem in the order process that we would otherwise not be aware of. Your diligence is very much appreciated. CATALOGUE LEGEND G S Spec Spec (W) SO S (CD)

MENDOZA, ARGENTINA
BODEGA FRANÇOIS LURTON
www.francoislurton.com
The Lurton family is well known from their Bordeaux properties, which include Chateau Bonnet, Chateau Dauzac, Chateau La Louviere, and several others. As patriarch Andre Lurton had little interest in winemaking in regions outside Bordeaux, sons Jacques and François grew their own enterprise through estates in Spain, southern France, Portugal, Chile, Uruguay and Argentina. Eventually François bought out his brother and took over full control of the company. Its Argentina operations cover over 250 hA of prime winemaking real estate in Mendoza. Bodega François Lurton now enjoys international success based on the production of high quality, high value wines. Its mid-1990s vine plantings are now in full production, and it continues its work with contract growers to ensure supply to meet the ever growing demand. White Wine

ALTOS LAS HORMIGAS
www.altoslashormigas.com
In 1995, Alberto Antonini, a well known Tuscan wine maker, and Antonio Morescalchi, a young entrepreneur, took a trip to visit the major viticultural areas of Argentina. They returned powerfully impressed by the potential of Malbec in the Mendoza appellation, and felt certain that they had found what they were looking for. Later that year, 216 hectares were bought in the township of Lujàn de Cuyo. Shortly after this, some other old time friends, enthused by the idea, joined the enterprise: Attilio Pagli, another well known Tuscan wine maker; Alan Scerbanenko, a ItaloSwiss management counselor; and last, but not least, Antonio Terni, Italo-Argentine Bob Dylan aficionado, who produces top quality wines in the Marche region of Italy. Altos Las Hormigas devotes its energies to the production of Malbec only, refining their methods to bring out the most in this exciting varietal. At the heart of the property stands the 2,000 square meter cellar with capacity for 16,000 hectoliters, plus 900 hectoliter capacity in small oak. Completed in 2001, the cellar was designed to have minimal impact on the territory, respecting the local traditional architecture. Red Wine Malbec Clasico 2011

PATAGONIA, ARGENTINA
HUMBERTO CANALE
www.bodegahcanale.com
At 39.2˚ South, in Argentine Patagonia, wines coming from one of the world's most southern regions are made. This is the High Valley of the Río Negro, whose special climate, with cold nights and intensely sunny days, is ideal for the development of fine grape varieties. The province of Río Negro is located in the northern part of Patagonia. The Negro River, with origins in the Andes Mountains, flows across Patagonia and into the Atlantic Ocean. Along its course, it gives birth to fertile valleys that are a real oasis in the middle of these wasted lands. In 1909, the Humberto Canale Winery was founded by the engineer who gave it his name. He played an important role in the development of the Upper Valley’s industry of small, individual wineries. His professional know-how promoted investigation and creativity, thus allowing the world to see that the region possessed a special terroir that gave birth to different, very characteristic, and undeniably excellent wines. MILDURA, AUSTRALIA
DEAKIN ESTATE
www.deakinestate.com.au Southeastern Australia’s Mildura region was transformed from an arid, scrubby, no man’s land, to an agricultural oasis in the 1880s. A man named Alfred Deakin, a former Prime Minister of Australia, encouraged California’s Chaffey Brothers to bring their irrigation expertise to the vast inland of the Murray River. Since then, the region has become one of Australia’s most productive and prosperous sources of high quality produce, including citrus, olives, almonds and grapes. The Deakin Estate property and its wines are named in honour of Alfred Deakin, as visionary for the region. Purchased in 1967, Deakin Estate was planted to premium wine grapes which were sold as fruit until 1980, when a winery facility was built. By the time the Deakin Estate range was launched in 1994, some vines had achieved considerable age, while newer vines were being planted. The efforts are focused on producing fruit of the highest quality, and expressive wines brimming with flavour and varietal character. With exports to over 30 countries around the world, these efforts have succeeded in spades.

KATNOOK ESTATE
www.katnookestate.com.au
Katnook Estate is located on the Riddoch Highway, just north of Penola, in the heart of Coonawarra. Katnook is an aboriginal word meaning ‘Fat Land’, referring to Coonawarra’s red fertile soil, known today as ‘terra rossa’. Coonawarra is well known for producing some of Australia’s great Cabernet Sauvignon. Katnook was the site of Coonawarra’s second vintage made by John Riddoch in 1896. In 1980, the second chapter of Katnook Estate began when wines were again produced from the property by Senior Winemaker Wayne Stehbens, who still makes Katnook Estate wines today. He boasts an extraordinary track record, having won two Jimmy Watson Trophies, a double trophy at the prestigious International Wine & Spirit Competition in 2003 for the flagship Odyssey Cabernet Sauvignon 1998, and other international trophies.
Red Wine
Katnook Estate quality begins with growing grapes which capture classic Coonawarra flavour, while minimizing environmental impact. Wayne describes his winemaking style as ‘making wines which show subtlety, intrigue and complexity. Two Hands is one of Australia’s most decorated wineries, making its most sought after wines. The ‘two hands’ are Michael Twelftree and Richard Mintz, who formed the company in 1999 with the clear objective of making the best possible Shiraz wines from prized Shiraz producing regions within Australia. Michael Twelftree’s background includes years of exporting Australian wine to USA and Asia, while Richard Mintz is a former CEO of one of Australia’s leading cooperages in the Barossa Valley. The two old friends set out in 2000 with just 17 tonnes of fruit from the McLaren Vale and Padthaway wine regions. From the start, the wines were well received with a healthy stream of reviews, culminating with Robert Parker’s 2004 declaration of Two Hands as ‘the finest negociant operation south of the equator’. Two Hands concentrates its efforts on sourcing the best fruit from the best Shiraz vineyards in Australia, working with its growers on achieving the full potential from each individual site. MARGARET RIVER, AUSTRALIA
FRANKLIN TATE ESTATES The Tate family has been making award winning wines since 1969, when patriarch John Tate founded Evans & Tate, which went on to become arguably Margaret River’s most well known winery. During John and son Franklin’s involvement, they were twice awarded ’Most Outstanding Red Wine in the World’ at the Wine magazine challenge. Franklin Tate Estates marks a return by the Tate family to their roots with unique, hand-crafted wines from the world renowned Margaret River region of Australia. Internationally recognized as one of Australia’s top growing regions for savoury but supple reds and crisp whites of character and flavour, Margaret River is situated in a unique spot on the western tip of the country. Franklin spent several years looking for outstanding sites, and within these, the best micro terroirs, to find a balance and diversity of soils capable of reducing yield and concentrating flavours. Only the finest grapes make the grade. By committing to producing only a small amount of wine from varietals that the region does best means coaxing the very best from the vineyard. White Wine

CHATEAU DE CARAGUILHES
www.caraguilhes.fr
Historically, the Corbières region has been connected with vinegrowers and the making of wine. By the 12th century, the Abbey of Fontfroide was taken over by the monks of the Cistercian Order, highly skilled vinegrowers who undertook to restore the art of the vine in the Corbieres, once started by the Phoenicians and furthered by the Romans. So began the history of the domaine known as Caraguilhes. The famous chateau that one sees today was constructed in the early 17th century. The vines still grow in an ideal location known for its exceptional soil quality, with a mixture of clay and limestone. In 1935, the winery’s new owner became the only grower to refuse to use insecticides and weed killers or chemical fertilizers—well ahead of his time. Inspired by the same precision and philosophy, the same love of the soil and of authenticity, current owner Laurent Max continues this practice. Since 1990, the organic status of the wines of Caraguilhes are formally guaranteed by ECOCERT. Red Wine

DOMAINE GAYDA

Situated in the foothills of the Pyrenees, surrounded by its vineyards, Domaine Gayda is a Languedoc destination 25 km southwest of Carcassonne, in the village of Brugairolles. Known traditionally for its large area of vineyards producing volume table wines, things have changed rapidly in the Languedoc over the last ten years, and Domaine Gayda has been at the centre of it. The area is blessed with many exciting ‘terroirs’, diverse in soil types and climate. This diversity is Gayda’s opportunity to not only grow grapes of outstanding quality in its own vineyards, but to work with partner growers throughout this beautiful, diverse region of France. Domaine Gayda has a passion for the traditional ‘cepages’ grown across the many diverse soils and climates of their vineyards. While the grapes are rooted in tradition, the winery itself is all about the ‘new’, with investments in state-of-the-art equipment and technology, with wines that are full and flavourful to appeal to today’s consumers. Domaine Pierre-Henri Morel, one of the most promising and exciting estates of the Rhone Valley, was created in 2008 by Mr. Morel, who has worked with globally acclaimed winemaker Michel Chapoutier since 2000. In 2007, the two completed a joint venture purchase of vineyards in the prestigious ‘Pignan’ area in Chateauneuf-du-Pape, an area with outstanding terroir, producing truly refined Chateauneuf-du-Pape wines. To take advantage of the amazing variety of soils in the southern Rhone, other plots were added—Cotes du Rhone Villages ‘Laudun’ and ‘Signargues’, from the right bank of the Rhone facing Chateauneuf-du-Pape, are outstanding values, and Gigondas, made from plots located on medium height terraces on alluvial soils. www.dilenardo.it The estate of Massimo di Lenardo, located in the famous DOC areas of Friuli DOC Grave and Friuli DOC Aquileia, dates back to the early 1800s. UMANI RONCHI
www.umanironchi.it
The foundation of the winery in Cupramontana by Dr Gino Umani Ronchi dates back to the 1950s. Later, Eng. Bianchi entered into partnership and the production and marketing of ‘Umani Ronchi’ wines increased notably. Today, Umani Ronchi owns 110 hectares in the Verdicchio Classico area, 60 hectares in the Rosso Conero, and 30 in Abruzzi. Though the winery is a leading exponent of two native Marches wines—Verdicchio and Rosso Conero—wines from foreign grape varieties, notably Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, have resulted in wines that have achieved international acclaim. DI MAJO NORANTE
www.dimajonorante.it
Azienda Agricola Di Majo Norante is located to the north of the Gargano in Molise on the estate of the Marquees Norante of Santa Cristina. Since the 1800’s, its ancestors have dedicated themselves to vine cultivation (ancient wine cellars are located under the main town square and the old palace in Campomarino). In 1968, a modern canteen was constructed, along with the first replanted vines in the Ramitello zone. This zone has northeastern exposure, constant summer breezes, a light limestone soil, and a slope toward the Scabolone and Madonna Grande valleys, combining to create a very favorable grape growing environment.

Di Majo Norante uses only estate grown grapes, cultivated without the use of chemical or synthetic additives, yielding a product that can be considered “biological”. SARDINIA, ITALY
ARGIOLAS
www.argiolas.it Argiolas has firmly established itself as one of the very top producers from Sardinia, the newest critics’ darling region of Italy. Sardinia has followed in the footsteps of Sicily in making a name for itself through producing fabulously aromatic wines from indigenous grape varietals— at very fair prices. Argiolas’ history began in 1918, when Francesco Argiolas planted the first vineyard with the assistance of some returning Italian POWs. But it was Antonio Argiolas, whose great enthusiasm and experience in viticulture set the stage for greatness, buying new estates and setting up a modern farm. In the late 1970's, Antonio’s sons Franco and Giuseppe reorganized the business in all aspects, from vineyards to cellars. They chose one of Italy's leading oenologists, Giacomo Tachis, who joined forces with oenologist Mariano Murru. Now three generations of the Argiolas family are together: patriarch Antonio (now 97 years old), his two sons and his grandchildren.

FATTORIA VITICCIO
www.fattorioviticcio.com
The Viticcio Estate stands amidst a rustic complex, charmingly situated on the gentle hillside overlooking sloping vineyards above the picturesque ancient town of Greve in Chianti, lying midway between Florence and Siena in the heart of the Chianti Classico region. Its founder, Lucio Landini, was a man deeply attached to Tuscan tradition. He and his wife Franca decided to aim high and count primarily on export. From modest beginnings, the focus remains the same today—the production of high quality wines worthy of an expert international clientele. Viticcio is now owned and operated by Alessandro Landini who, by following in his father’s footsteps, is the epitome of a new class of wine entrepreneurs—passionate, competent and professional—blending tradition with state-of-the-art technology. TENUTA VALDIPIATTA

www.valdipiatta.it
Giulio Caporali, Valdipiatta’s owner and founder, purchased the estate in the late 1980s to pursue his dream of creating a great wine. What began as an old farmhouse and a few hectares of vineyards on the hills which slope from Montepulciano down towards the Valdichiana became a solid vine growing and wine business. With a strong, innovative approach and profound respect for the land, Giulio has been able to elevate Valdipiatta to one of the top producers in the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano appellation. “It is my Shangri-La”, is how Giulio describes Valdipiatta. In 2002, he turned over management of the estate and winery to his daughter Miriam, who happens to possess the same enthusiasm as her father. Giulio continues to run the agricultural side of the business, whereas Miriam has chosen to concentrate on the activities of the cellar and on the marketing of the company products. PIANIROSSI The Pianirossi estate is a result of the vision and efforts of owner Stefano Sincini, originally a respected fashion entrepreneur, born and raised in the culture of wine. Sincini discovered the magnificent location just a stone’s throw away from Castello Banfi and the first slopes of Montalcino. He gathered a highly competent team, with consultation from acclaimed oenologists Carolo Ferrini and Gioia Cresti, and set about creating a wine unique to the terroir, deciding to bring from his native Marches the cuttings of Montepulciano to complement the traditional Tuscan Sangiovese and the Alicante and Petit Verdot. By slightly veering off the path of traditional Tuscan offerings, Pianirossi has established itself as a rising star of a new generation of Maremma estates. Red Wine

SPORTOLETTI
www.sportoletti.com
Sportoletti’s winery is located near Spello and Assisi, two ancient medieval towns in the region of Umbria in central Italy. It is the hilliest region in Italy, and an extremely green and pristine area, where nature and history blend together. Winemaking traditions in this region reach back to the Etruscans and Romans, but as in Burgundy, grape growing and winemaking were developed and enriched by the monks during Medieval times. The Sportoletti family has been in agriculture for generations and have always been dedicated to the production of fine wine in Umbria. Brothers Ernesto and Remo have followed their father Vittorio’s teachings on high quality productions. The family owns 50 acres of vineyards and produces two whites and two reds. Thanks to the impressive success of their wines, overall production has soared to 200,000 bottles. Their notable Merlot is produced from old vines planted at Sportoletti more than 50 years ago. The soil richness, together with innovative methods of production, give Sportoletti’s wines their unique identity and make them among the best expressions of Umbrian winemaking. In 1998, the Sportolettis hired the esteemed world renowned enologist Riccardo Cotarella, marking the start of a highly successful professional relationship. White Wine

THE VENETO, ITALY
MIONETTO www.mionetto.it www.mionettousa.com Few lands identify themselves like Valdobbiadene so totally and directly with a completely special "drinking philosophy". Try, for example, tasting a glass of Prosecco - the most renowned "offspring" of these hills. You will feel that you have been projected into a world which you believed lost forever, where life still proceeds at a liveable pace and where values remain unchanged: equilibrium and lightness, elegance and genuineness, delight in getting together and enjoying life. From Prosecco to Cartizze and many other straightforward, generous wines the fascinating history of the vines and wines of Valdobbiadene has trodden a long path, but it has always been true to itself. You only need to travel along the Prosecco Road - the first enological route to have been created in Italy - to be aware of it all. In these places, the savours, nature, everything is still authentic and incomparable. It is in this land and with this singular tradition that an equally unique entrepreneurial story has become associated - that of the Mionetto family. Sparkling White Wine

BOTTEGA - La Cantina dei Poeti
www.alexander.it
Originality, creativity and quality have elevated this winery to the next level. In 1992, Bottega diversified to create its Cantina dei Poeti sparkling line, which took Bottega in a new direction. The Petalo Moscato is a stunning wine that amazingly captures the essence of the naturally sweet Moscato grapes from which it is made. It has an aroma of flowers and fruits, and balances crisp acidity with peach and rose flavours. It truly is ‘The Wine of Love’. Its counterpart, the Prosecco ‘IL Vino dei Poeti’ (‘The Wine of Poets’), is fresh, crisp and elegant, with a delicate fragrance of acacia blossoms. It is dry, refined and well balanced, with a persistent effervescence. It is well worthy of the line in which it is found. White Wine

CA’ RUGATE
www.carugate.it
Ca’ Rugate, established by the Tessari family in 1986, takes its name from the volcanic hills where most of the vineyards are to be found. The Ca’ Rugate vineyards cover 40 hectares, 30 of which are located within the commune of Monteforte d’Alpone in the rugged heart of Soave Classico, with 10 ha in the commune of Montecchia di Crosara in nearby Valpolicella. Ca’ Rugate uses only indigenous grape varieties such as Garganega, and Trebbiano di Soave for white wines; and Corvina, Rondinella and Corvinone for reds.
White Wine
The Soave wines of Ca Rugate are unique, produced from 100% Garganega grapes, without blending in Trebbiano or other inexpensive grapes, as is done for most Soave wines. They also utilize single vineyard production, resulting in wines that are among the best of their kind, with full, fresh fruit and hints of almonds. Size Retail Price Listing CSPC

TEDESCHI
www.tedeschiwines.com
Numerous generations of the Tedeschi family have dedicated love and devotion to viticulture in the Valpolicella, giving them an enviable wealth of experience, tradition, and nobility, all of which are used to achieve the highest level of quality. The first purchase of vineyards was drawn up in 1630. The descendents followed suit, bringing prestige, respect and esteem to the family, to the extent that they were called upon to carry out important political and religious duties. In 1824, Nicolò Tedeschi purchased more vineyards, and with his skill and personality, brought the family business many steps forward, to the extent that all successors would dedicate their lives to upholding the good name of the family and its wines. The present generation—Antonietta, Sabrina and Riccardo—work together to maintain the spirit of the Tedeschi family as upholders of the finest wines that The Veneto region can produce, and as purveyors of these wines to an audience of buyers and consumers around the world. SPINATO
www.spinato.it The land on which Anna Spinato’s grapes are grown has been used for that same purpose since the 12th century. Wine was first produced there, on the banks of the Piave River, by the monks of the Sant’ Andrea Abbey. Even the Spinato logo tells of the family’s “passion and love for our culture and the tradition of winemaking.” Today, the wines reflect all the elegance and unpretentious sophistication that Anna Spinato herself is so well known for. Anna Spinato wines have been awarded medals at such events as Vinitaly, the Japan Wine Challenge, and MIWine of Milan. Indeed, the popularity of Anna Spinato’s wines is such that Spinato corks are embedded with a special microchip that guarantees the authenticity of every bottle.

KONRAD
www.konradwines.co.nz, www.mountfishtailwines.co.nz Konrad & Co. Winery is fully owned by the Hengstler family—Konrad, Sigrun and their two sons, Conrad and Carlo. The Hengstlers originally emigrated from Germany to Melbourne in Australia, where they settled for over twenty years. While travelling through New Zealand, Konrad discovered Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, and was immediately attracted to this outstanding wine. From that point, the decision to move to Marlborough and become involved in the wine industry was easy. The family planted their first vines in 1996, producing a range of wines from their two vineyards in the Wairua and Waihopai Valleys, totaling 40 hectares. Each year after fermentation, wines from the two distinct sites are used for the Mount Fishtail label, ensuring the same high quality and consistent flavours every year.

CITRUSDAL ‘SIX HATS’
www.citrusdalwines.co.za
The Citrusdal Wines cellar is located 170 km from Cape Town, in the heart of the town of the same name, so given due to its status as the Western Cape’s leading producer of citrus fruits. In 2007, the winery was restructured under the guidance of Charles Back, renowned through his Fairview, Goats do Roam and Spice Route brands. The company is now a collaborative partnership including Charles Back, Mike Paul (a leading UK wine marketer), and a number of Fairtrade farmers, the incorporation of which has seen a large number of farm workers from the community becoming partners in the business, as the funds generated through the Fairtrade levies go directly into the community. Fairtrade is a system of product certification and regulation that aims to ensure that workers throughout the chain of production receive fair treatment with respect to wages, working conditions and participation. Fairtrade operates through a range of stringent controls and requirements, resulting in certification for the producer. Fairtrade is about better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability, and fair terms for farmers and workers in the developing world. The ‘Six Hats’ range of Fairtrade wines was launched in 2009. The ‘six hats’ are worn by both the farmer and the community, with the various roles signified on the label by six elegantly illustrated hats, representing the principles of PARTNERSHIP, CHANGE, POTENTIAL, EQUITY, DIGNITY and SUSTAINABILITY. GOLDEN KAAN
www.goldenkaan.com
Golden Kaan wines originate from selected vineyards at the southernmost tip of Africa – the fertile, lush Western Cape centered on Cape Town. Here, the Golden Kaan varietals flourish in the rich soils of the Table Mountain sandstone along with the Malmesbury shale, and profit from the ideal terrain of the Western Cape, which resembles a Mediterranean climate with warm, dry summers and good winter rainfall, ensuring the minimum amount of irrigation. These weather and terroir conditions ensure sun-ripened varietal grapes of the highest quality, which are then used to produce the full-bodied and unique wines of Golden Kaan. Golden Kaan remains committed to environmentally friendly vineyard practices and wine sourcing. All the wines and grapes sourced for Golden Kaan derive from vineyards that are fully IPW (Integrated Production of Wine) certified. White Wine

DELICATO FAMILY VINEYARDS
www.dfvwines.com
When Gasparé Indelicato emigrated to California from Italy, it was only natural that he would do the one thing he knew he could do better than anything else—grow wine grapes, like his family, generations before him. He planted the first grapes for Delicato Family Vineyards in the spring of 1924. Within a few years, winemakers across the country knew of the quality of Gasparé’s California grapes. His hard work was rewarded with more orders than he could fill. During Prohibition, Gasparé’s grapes were sought after by home winemakers seeking quality grapes for home winemaking. But success turned into hard times—sales declined during the Depression. In 1935, with Prohibition repealed, Gasparé made the decision to turn a portion of his grapes into wine, using techniques his father had taught him. In the old hay barn by the vineyard, Gasparé, his brother-in-law, and their twin wives took turns with a hand driven press to produce their first vintage consisting of just under 1,500 cases of wine. Gasparé established a reputation for great winemaking, and other producers in the budding California wine industry approached Gaspare and his family for custom-made wines. To meet the demand, the family acquired additional vineyard land. Gasparé’s three sons, Vincent, Frank and Anthony, joined the family winery as the business grew. Today, Chris and Jay Indelicato, third generation family members and Anthony’s sons, are leading the business into the future under the name of DFV Wines, now the fifth largest winery operation in the United States. BENTON-LANE

Steve and Carol Girard have been owners of Benton-Lane since 1988. They headed north from their home state California, feeling that Oregon’s cooler climate offered the possibility of producing Pinot Noir with better balance, structure, and more interesting flavours. They settled on a property called ‘Sunnymount’ in southern Willamette Valley, named for its rain shadow position due east of the highest peaks in the coastal range. Sunnymount straddles the border between Benton and Lane counties. The vineyard has grown to 138 acres, planted mostly to Pinot Noir, with 7 distinct clones of rootstocks carefully matched to the planting location. In 2004, the winery began full production of Pinot Gris. Benton-Lane is distributed throughout the U.S. and various international markets, and continues to be highly regarded for its exceptional crafted wines, showing off the amazing capabilities of the Willamette Valley. To do so, he joined with world-class winemaker/vineyard consultant Zelma Long, who had just retired from her illustrious 30 year wine industry career. Success was immediate, as both the 2000 vintage Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon wines were released to rave reviews. DISTILLERIA BOTTEGA
www.alexander.it
Distilleria Bottega was set up in 1977 by Aldo Bottega, a master distiller with over 30 years of experience. The distillery began modestly, operating in the local grappa market. In 1983, with the death of its founder, son Sandro took on the management of the company with the assistance of siblings Barbara and Stefano. In a few years, Distilleria Bottega left its anonymity, thanks to an innovative distillation system that makes grappa mellower and more delicate. In 1987, the Alexander brand joined Bottega; this new brand is intended for those consumers who have developed a much more educated and refined palate. All Alexander Grappa has its origin from very fresh and vinous marcs that are distilled in copper stills following the steam distillation in order to guarantee the highest quality. The Venetian blown glass bottles, designed by Sandro Bottega, are the ideal container to view the clarity and transparency of the Alexander Grappa. They were also the object of a prestigious international exhibition called “Art in Grappa”. Spirits

www.vecchiaromagna.it www.montenegro.it
Vecchia Romagna comes from a great company tradition that dates back to 1820, when the refined French distiller Jean Bouton, the founder of the first steam distillery, arrived in Italy. Distilled from prized Trebbiano grapes, Vecchia Romagna Black Label is an unmistakable brandy. An exceptional recipe, advanced distillation techniques, and aging for a minimum of three years in small oak casks give it a warm intense colour, an aromatic, harmonious, complex fragrance, and a smooth dry taste. For these reasons, it has become the default Italian brandy in the marketplace. Amaro Montenegro is a traditional amaro distilled using 40 herbs obtained from around the world, including vanilla and orange peels. It uses a unique soaking and distillation process, resulting in a liquor that is sweet in taste, with a slightly bitter finish. It was first produced by famous Italian spirits manufacturer Stanislao Cobianchi in the late 19th century and is named after the second queen of Italy, Princess Elena of Montenegro. It is extremely popular as an after-coffee drink (‘ammazzacaffe’ in Italian). Brandy

PINK 47
www.osawhisky.com Multi-award winning Pink 47 Gin was launched in the spring of 2007, to immediate critical acclaim. It is distilled by the UK’s second largest distiller, which produces a staggering 6.5 million 9L cases of spirits every year. Their roots trace back 250 years and today specialize in the distillation of traditional London Dry Gin. In 2007, they won no less than 18 awards for this new product. While the process of distillation of London Dry Gin is widely understood, Pink 47 Gin certainly follows its own production path. Specifically, it is the use of the twelve carefully selected botanicals used in the recipe, including almonds, cassis and nutmeg, that helps to give the gin such a distinct sensory profile. The remarkable Pink 47 Gin bottle takes its shape from the legendary Khavaraya Pink Diamond, which has been missing for over 400 years, and was reputably shaped “like a sublime teardrop of spiritual joy”. The search for the Khavaraya symbolizes the company’s struggle to craft a perfect gin to make definitive cocktails. Facets flash the pink tones of the label through the crystal clear liquid to create a distinctive ‘pink’ package.

Springbank Distillery is a true original in many regards. It is the oldest distillery in Scotland that survives in the ownership of its founders, the Mitchells, Scotland’s senior distilling family. The present distillery was built in 1828 on the site of the previous illicit distillery of Archibald Mitchell. Springbank is the signature producer of Campbeltown, one of the five recognized production regions of scotch. It has its own unique and delightful nuances which make it among the world's best single malt producers. Springbank is unique amongst Scotland’s distilleries in that all parts of the production process, from traditional malting to bottling, are carried out at the one location. Of note, it is the only distillery that has never used chill filtering and the addition of caramel to add back colour in the production of its fine malts, ensuring that the essential oils, esthers and proteins are maintained in the product, guaranteeing whiskies of the finest pure aroma and flavour. CADENHEAD’S
www.wmcadenhead.com The firm of William Cadenhead Ltd, Wine & Spirit Merchants was founded in 1842, and is Scotland's oldest independent bottler. The company remained in the same family ownership until taken over in 1972 by J & A Mitchell & Co. Ltd, the proprietors of Springbank distillery. In 1852, William Cadenhead joined the firm established by his brother-in-law George Duncan. In 1858, Duncan’s death led to Cadenhead’s acquisition of the business and a change in trading name to reflect his own. Ironically, it was not as a distiller that William Cadenhead had originally built a name for himself, but rather as a local poet. Upon Cadenhead’s death in 1904, his nephew Robert W. Duthie succeeded him, and set about developing what the firm became famous for—single malt scotch whisky and Demerara rum. During the Depression, the business fell on hard times, including the untimely death of Mr. Duthie, After a period of unsteady management, the company was sold to the Mitchell family, who set about to ensure the long term reputation and success of the Cadenhead brands. ‘Cadenhead’ is now a household name in the whisky world, and the present owners have expanded its business while keeping the goals and traditional methods the firm began with in 1842.

SPIRITS ANTIGUA
ANTIGUA DISTILLERY
www.antiguadistillery.com
The Antigua Distillery has long been the premium distiller of fine rums in The Leeward islands. They are committed to maintaining the high standards of production and packaging that have been developed over recent decades. The company produces high quality rums with the finest allnatural ingredients, using a skillful combination of traditional methods and modern technology. They continue the tradition of using copper pipes for their five column continuous copper still that can produce 1.5 million litres a year. Ageing is done in 220 litre American oak casks that were previously used for ageing bourbon, covering a time frame of a minimum 2-3 years, with no top-ups to replace evaporation, allowing the "angels" to take their share. English Harbour Five Year Old Antigua Rum is smooth, lush, and not overly stickly sweet, with a lovely vanilla profile, making it versatile for cocktails or as a fine sipping rum all on its own. It is a premium rum that offers tremendous value. Rum

SPIRITS CANADA
McLOUGHLIN & STEELE McLoughlin & Steele is a premium rye whisky produced in Vernon, BC at the north end of the beautiful Okanagan Valley. Proudly named for two pioneers of the rugged BC wilderness from the mid 1800s – Dr. John McLoughlin and James Steele – this special spirit is a tribute to the grit and determination that were required to survive in such an unforgiving place. Its producer is the acclaimed distiller Okanagan Spirits, Western Canada’s premium craft distillery. Its products contain no additives, no chemicals, no artificial flavours, and are made from 100% natural source materials. It uses state-of-the-art fermentation and filtering processes, and carefully distills in a traditional copper pot still, ensuring that its products are made to the highest quality standards. Okanagan Spirits presents its high quality rye whisky, using the finest Canadian grains and rye in the process. Its production is small batch, with no sugars added. The whisky is aged a minimum of three years in American white oak, and experiences the seasonal temperature fluctuations of the valley to positive effect, as the expanding and contracting barrels enhance the ageing process of the liquid. The result is a delightfully smooth, smoky, rich and flavourful whisky that leaves a long, pleasant aftertaste, ideal for sipping slowly on its own – as McLoughlin and Steele would have done in their day – or as a solid quality base for a variety of fabulous cocktail creations. SPIRITS BRAZIL
CACHAÇA 61
www.missiato.com.br
Even before ‘The Girl From Ipanema’, the world has long been fascinated with Brazilian culture, flavour and style. But until recently, Brazil has been quietly keeping a very tantalizing and delicious secret, a secret about its national drink of choice—Cachaça! Cachaça (pronounced ‘kah-shah-sa’) is a distant relative of rum, but while rum’s base is produced from sugar cane molasses, cachaca is produced from the actual sugar cane itself. It is an incredible drink consumed straight, but it really shines as a cocktail base. Cachaça 61 first appeared in Brazil in 1961—hence its name. It has become one of Brazil’s top selling brands, and its popularity has increased along with its sales. In fact, with global case volume up over 20% in the past year alone, the Cachaça 61 brand is one of the fastest growing in the world. The signature drink of Cachaça 61 is, of course, the Caipirinha. Made with fresh limes, ice, sugar and Cachaça, it is a deliciously refreshing cocktail. In fact, the majority of cocktails made with Cachaça 61 are fresh-ingredient focused. All of the drinks are refreshingly pleasing and food-friendly, making it a natural fit for any occasion. It’s a bartender’s dream because of its versatility. It can be used to make hundreds of delicious, easy-to-make drinks that will have taste buds dancing like Carnival in Rio! Cachaça

ANCHOR BREWING
www.anchorbrewing.com
San Francisco’s famous Anchor Steam, the classic of American brewing tradition since 1896, is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. The deep amber color, thick creamy head, and rich flavour all testify to its traditional brewing methods. Anchor Steam is unique, for its brewing process has evolved over many decades and is like no other in the world. The ‘steam’ reference comes from the fact that the brewery started with no way to chill the boiling wort, so they pumped it to large open-top bins on the roof for it to be chilled by the cool air blowing in off the Pacific Ocean. Thus while brewing, the brewery had a distinct cloud of steam around the roof let off by the wort as it cooled. Anchor Brewing continues this tradition with the other fine beers that it produces, each one a distinctive, premium, hand-crafted beer of the finest quality. Beer

BIRRA MENABREA
www.birramenabrea.com
The historic Menabrea brewery – the oldest in Italy – was built in 1846 in the town of Biella at the foot of the Italian Alps. Still run by the founding family, it is now the country's only fully Italian-owned brewery. Menabrea 1846 is still brewed in the original building, which boasts an extensive network of underground cellars where the beer is fermented and aged. Menabrea 1846 is a premium prestige lager beer. Additive free, it is the only Italian lager still brewed by bottom fermentation, a completely natural ‘slow fermentation’ process using spring water from the Alps and brewed with malt, maize, hops and yeast. Unlike mass produced beer, no water is later added to standardize the alcohol content. The results are a testament to eight generations of brewing expertise by the Menabrea family - a full bodied beer with a light colour and optimum flavour. Menabrea 1846 has won numerous international awards, the first being the Gold Medal Award at the London International Exhibition in 1925, and the most recent being the top prize for two years running at the Chicago International Beer Championships in 1997, 1998, and then again in 2000. QUILMES
www.quilmes.com.ar Say Quilmes in Argentina, and you mean “beer.” The name has been synonymous to the beverage, and this could be traced way back to 1888, when the Quilmes brewery was founded by German immigrant Otto Bemberg, in cooperation with the Quilmes province of Buenos Aires. It has since contributed to the development of what is known as the Quilmes zone in Buenos Aires. Quilmes, an ancient Indian name, was actually first brewed in 1890. It started as a family business with strict focus on quality, distribution and solid communication with clients and customers. It has become somewhat of a national symbol, owning 75% of the domestic beer market share in Argentina. It sponsors the beloved national football team, and its colours are those of the national flag of Argentina. Quilmes is golden in colour and rich in texture, delivering a refreshing, light hoppy taste with a crisp dry finish. This is achieved through utilizing only the finest premium ingredients sourced from the rich lands of the Pampas and Patagonia regions.

GINGER BEER JAMAICA
ROYAL JAMAICAN
www.rjsgingerbeer.com
Dating back to early 2000 B.C., ginger was originally grown in both China and India. The spice traders eventually introduced ginger to Europe, where it was enjoyed for its culinary and medical properties. It was brought to the New World by the Spanish Conquistadors in the late 1500s, and then to Jamaica, where the tropical climate is perfectly suited for growing ginger. Jamaican ginger has traditionally been recognized as premier among gingers for the quality of its flavour, oil content and appearance, providing the basis upon which the standards of other gingers are assessed. Royal Jamaican Ginger Beer is authentically brewed with locally grown Jamaican ginger—the world’s finest. The time-honoured Jamaican recipe creates a unique, crisp, refreshing, full-bodied taste. Brewed with conviction and steeped in tradition, Royal Jamaican Ginger is proudly brewed and bottled in Jamaica. Ginger Beer

CIDER SWEDEN
KOPPARBERG
www.findkopparberg.com
Cider is a way of life in Sweden. In fact, it is believed Scandinavia is the original home of cider. Kopparberg, a range of semi-sweet ciders, is fermented according to an original recipe in the family owned brewery in the small town of Kopparberg in central Sweden. The key ingredient integral to all Kopparberg ciders is the unique ‘soft water’, sourced locally from the Kopparberg lakes and waters, which have a low mineral content, allowing the natural pure taste of the fruit to come through unaltered. Kopparberg Breweries AB was originally formed in 1882 through an amalgamation of the town’s 36 local brewers. Today, the company is the main employer in the town of 4,000 people. It is led by the brothers Peter and Dan-Anders Bronsman, while production itself takes place under the strict supervision of Brew Master Wolfgang and his apprentices—sons Raynhardt and Rickhard. Like all Swedes, they believe in the virtues of simplicity and uncomplicatedness, and this is reflected in the cider of which they’re so proud. Kopparberg is now sold in more than 40 countries, and is the world’s best-selling pear cider. Cider Pear Cider
