TRANSPORTING THE BROMPTON & LUGGAGE 3

THE B R O M P TON WAY The past year has been extraordinary. Among the highlights, an MBE for Andrew Ritchie, the inventor of the Brompton, to go with his Prince Philip Designers Prize; the company received two Queen’s Awards for Enterprise (for both Innovation and International Trade) as well as the BikeBiz Brand of the Year award from our peers in the industry; and the 5th instalment of the Brompton World Championship, with 750 registered riders, has now become an established part of the (British) racing calendar. The story of the past 12 months is of a company whose future is bound up with its history: there is a Brompton Way of doing things, marrying excellence in design, engineering and manufacturing with a passion for doing it all here in London. Brompton has never followed the easy option, insisting on getting things right rather than getting them easily or first, and that remains our approach. At the heart of the Brompton Way is a belief that designs and innovations should be built to last, just like the bikes themselves. So Bromptons are practical, reliable machines, designed and manufactured with real life, not the showroom, in mind. This total commitment to excellence through the entire product lifecycle has long been cherished by Brompton owners, but it is an approach that is now being recognised more widely for its success and sustainability. We hope this brochure goes some way to showing you why we are different, and why it matters.

4

P E R S ONAL TRANSPORT A Brompton will redefine how you see transport. It fits in with you and your journeys, whether you are a city commuter or a global tourer, in a hurry or taking your time. Whether you use public or private transport, or neither, a Brompton allows you to rethink, vary and adapt your journeys at will. A Brompton sets you free from the constraints imposed by the combustion engine, weather, transport systems, bike thieves and other hassles. On trains and buses it tucks into luggage space and it’s easily checked in for commercial flights... in cars, on boats, behind the pilot’s seat of a single-prop, Bromptons are taken on trips as often as they take their owners on journeys. And whether your trip involves other forms of transport or just your bike, when it’s over your Brompton fits in a cupboard, under a desk or in a cloakroom, safe from theft and the elements, ready for your next journey by personal transport. We think you’ll love our bikes, and the independence and freedom that comes with a Brompton. You might even wonder how you ever managed without a bike that tears up the transport rule book and puts you back in charge of your journeys.

5

THE D E S I G N All Bromptons share the same frame geometry, the result of 35 years of constant innovation and improvement, going back to the first prototypes developed by Andrew Ritchie in his bedroom in 1975. Today, the design process involves more people and complex software, but the goal remains to create the perfect combination of ride quality and compact portability, with neither treated as an afterthought. We also refuse to design obsolescence into our bikes, so practically all innovations are designed to be retrofitted on the tens of thousands of older Bromptons still in daily use. Every Brompton folds down into a small package, little larger than the wheels, in 10 to 20 seconds. The componentry has been designed to suit this unique fold, keeping lights, cables, etc. out of harm’s way and, by folding them in, keeping the chain and gears away from clothing and luggage. With no projections or loose parts, the folded bike carries like a small suitcase; rollers make it easy to stow the bike. Rear suspension is standard and also allows the bike to be ‘parked’. Parked, a Brompton stands on its own, leaving both hands free. Folded, a Brompton automatically stays securely locked together. Just as remarkable as the fold is the Brompton’s ride quality. The frames are made primarily of hightensile steel alloys for strength and stiffness, and tight tolerances in design and manufacturing ensure highly accurate frame-alignment. Excellent frame rigidity ensures that the cyclist’s efforts are efficiently converted into a responsive, quick ride, while a full-sized wheelbase delivers stability at speed.

6

O U R FACTORY Our reputation is based on excellence in design, engineering and manufacturing, which is why we do not build bikes for anyone else, and why no one builds bikes for us. We build our bikes to last and to be used – rigorously – on a daily basis, and that takes care and commitment. Every Brompton is built from scratch, under stringent quality controls, in our factory in West London; we don’t just assemble parts manufactured elsewhere. We even make most of the 1,200 parts that go into each Brompton. And for every bike we ship, we know whose work went into each stage of its manufacture. In the context of today’s bike industry, our approach is extraordinarily rare, but it is the only way to ensure the necessary quality on our hand-built bicycles. There are no short cuts to quality and everyone who works here – brazers, assemblers, office staff and engineers alike – all have an overriding commitment to it. We are proud of our attention to detail, of our emphasis on making robust products that simply work. And we all use a Brompton so we know how the bikes should be, and why quality matters.

7

CHO O S I N G A B R O M P TON A Brompton will easily become part of your daily life, but it helps if it is built around your needs. As everyone’s requirements are different, we have developed many options to make your Brompton just right for you and the kind of cycling you intend to do. Ride position, gearing, luggage, Superlight componentry, lighting and other parts can all be selected to suit, and the colour options allow you to personalise it further. We call it B-spoke™; our commitment to letting you choose exactly the Brompton you want. We know that all this choice can be as overwhelming as it is unusual among bike companies; all told, there are some 150 million possible configurations, not counting the luggage options. But there’s really nothing to it, and it will almost certainly enhance your Brompton ownership. Moreover, a B-spoke bike will feature only those components you want so may well be cheaper than a bike your dealer happens to have in stock. And there is absolutely no premium for having a bike “B-spoked”. You’ll find the B-spoke options set out over the following pages. You might value the functionality of hub gears and mudguards more than you mind the extra weight; you may prefer the individuality of a rarely-seen colour combination or the practicality of a bike cover or item of luggage; the choices are yours. Designed by you, a B-spoke bike is more likely to give you exactly what you want. If you’re not sure where to begin, some staff and friends of Brompton explain their bike choices in the pages that follow the B-spoke options. And our so-called Key Models towards the back show some of our most popular configurations, even if they only offer a glimpse of our full range.

MODEL TYPE

B - S P OKE YOUR BROMPTON There are three members of the Brompton family – the S, M and P Types; each has distinct handlebars designed for different styles of riding and use. The base bike is a Brompton S1E, fitted with a standard seat pillar and Brompton Kevlar tyres, weighing 10.17kg. The options that follow either add to that base weight (more gears, S Type rear rack), or subtract from it (Superlight frame, Kojak tyres), The straight, low bars of the S Type (grip height 935mm) offer to give the weight of the B-spoked bike.

GEARING TABLE

GEARING

a sporty ride position and a rigid, lightweight, positive feel. The pay-off is less room for front luggage, but then the S Type was not conceived as a touring bike.

M Type

P Type

The distinctive shape of the M Type’s handlebars has been used on the Brompton since the outset: the ride is more upright (height 1015mm), with excellent control, but a little heavier than the S Type (by 58g). The M Type is the all-rounder in our range, as much at home in the city as on a country lane, and with plenty of room for luggage at the front.

The P Type was designed with the touring cyclist in mind – two positions (height 1033mm and 880mm) offer the rider some variety; the lower angled grips present an aerodynamic profile, the upper grips provide upright control, ideal in traffic. The consequence of this flexibility is weight: the handlebars are 326g heavier than the S Type’s.

There are four options as far as gears go; and each of these can be lowered (or raised) to suit your riding style and terrain.

2 Speed (+188g)

3 Speed (+738g)

6 Speed (+920g)

Light, simple and without clutter, using our special free-hub: for the purist.

One gear for hills and starting off, one for cruising. Based on the unique Brompton derailleur system, with near perfect chainalignment, this is the best set-up for flexibility and portability. All you need for cycling around town.

The BSR [Brompton Standard Range] is an updated version of the classic Sturmey Archer hub in an aluminium alloy shell, three well-spaced gears. These are fully enclosed for reliability, and changing gear couldn’t be simpler; a popular choice for everyday cycling.

The combination of the highlyefficient BWR [Brompton Wide Range] hub with our own derailleur system gives six evenlyspaced gears. Control with the two triggers is easy and, with its low transmission losses and wide range, this multi-gear system is the right choice for touring and for riding in hilly areas.

Gearing in metres: the distance travelled for one revolution of the crank, in each gear, measured in metres. Gearing in inches: (commonly referred to as ‘gear inches’) the diameter of the hypothetical wheel each gear creates. The higher the gear, the larger the diameter (gear inches) of the hypothetical wheel, the further travelled for one revolution of the crank. NB: Lower gears are used for lower speeds and hillier conditions, higher gears are for flatter conditions and higher speeds. For a fuller explanation please refer to our website.

MUDGUARDS & RACK Version E

Version L (+285g)

Equipped with mudguards, essential for non-fair-weather cyclists.

Version R (+430g)

Whether or not you have front luggage, a carrier on the bike can be useful. The die-cast aluminium rack comes with shock cords and can easily manage loads of up to 10kg.

FRAME

Going without mudguards lends the bike a sharper appearance and is also the lightest and least expensive option, but there are drawbacks: the folded bike is not as stable, there’s no pump and of course no protection from any water or dirt on the road.

10

ALL-STEEL FRAME

SUPERLIGHT FRAME

On all Bromptons, steel is used for the main frame and handlebar stem. The steel gives rigidity to the vital link between handlebar and pedals, which is the key to good handling. All-steel Bromptons also feature a rear triangle, front fork and seat pillar made of steel.

(-790g to -1050g, depending on Version and seat pillar length) The Superlight option offers significant weight savings and will appeal particularly if you expect to carry the bike regularly. The main savings come from the use of high-strength titanium alloy in place of steel for the rear triangle, front fork, mudguard stays and folding pedal bolt; an anodized aluminium seat pillar, aluminium alloy headset and a superlight front wheel complete the line up. In line with the minimalist approach, no pump is fitted.

Whether your Brompton will go on big tours or small trips, our colour palette allows you to stamp your personality on your bike. There is of course no weight penalty associated with specifying an individual colour scheme, and opting for “non-standard” colours is kept deliberately affordable.

ALL-STEEL Main Frame MONO

COLOURS

B - S P OKE YOUR BROMPTON

On a bike with an all-steel frame you can choose either to have it finished in one colour or two, with the extremities and main frame contrasting; the only exception is the Raw Lacquer option, which is only available for the whole frame, not in combination.

Extremities

Main Frame

BLACK WHITE TURKISH GREEN CLARET

CLASSIC

The titanium parts on Superlight bikes are not painted, so only one colour choice is possible (for the main frame and handlebar stem).

SUPERLIGHT

Extremities BRIGHT

For an all-steel bike the handlebar stem is the same colour as the bike’s extremities; in the case of a Superlight bike, the handlebar stem is the same colour as the bike’s main frame. N.B. Please consider the colours employed here as indicative only; colours on a paper form can not match exactly those found on a metal bike.

SEAT HEIGHT

no surcharge

surcharge

Brompton offers three seat pillar lengths to ensure the right fit. Aluminium seat pillars are supplied in place of steel versions with Superlight bikes.

Standard Seat Pillar

Raises a saddle up to 995mm from the ground. If your inside leg is more than 33”/84cm, you will almost certainly need a longer seat pillar.

Extended Seat Pillar

(+105g steel; +49g aluminium) Offers an additional 60mm of elevation, though it does leave the saddle correspondingly higher when folded.

Telescopic Seat Pillar

(+364g steel; +241g aluminium) Offers up to 175mm more elevation than a standard pillar yet, when lowered, the saddle projects only 20mm above the folded package.

11

SADDLE

Brooks B17 Special (+217g) & Brooks B17S Special (+169g)

Sporty, comfortable, practical, this high-quality unisex saddle has been designed by Brompton specifically for our bikes. A moulded grip under the nose facilitates carrying, and the ingenious and incredibly light Brompton Pentaclip allows stepless adjustment of the saddle angle.

This beautiful traditional saddle will give years of comfortable cycling, the leather moulding with time to the rider. Finished with hand-hammered copper rivets, copper rails, and fitted with the Brompton Pentaclip for stepless adjustment, this old favourite is available in men’s and women’s versions.

TYRES

Brompton Saddle

Brompton Kevlar

REAR SUSPENSION

Our standard tyre is exceptionally free-running, durable yet light. The Kevlar belt under the tread almost eliminates punctures. Finished with reflective sidewalls as standard.

12

Suspension is important on a small-wheeled bike. Ours is provided by a polyurethane block between the main and rear frames; lightweight and effective, it smoothes out the lumps and bumps en route, while the inherent damping avoids excessive “bounce”. Two levels of resistance are available, to suit body weight and riding style:

Standard Suspension

Fine for many users, particularly lighter people and those who ride and pedal smoothly.

Schwalbe Marathon

(+144g) Heavier than the Brompton tyre and noticeably slower, but it offers even better grip and is solidly-built, with a Kevlar belt and a thicker sidewall. Finished with reflective sidewalls.

Schwalbe Kojak

(-232g) The Kojak is the fastest tyre we’ve ever fitted on the Brompton; light and puncture-resistant (thanks to a RaceGuard strip), a Kevlar bead also allows it to be folded, making it easy to pack as a spare. Finished with reflective sidewalls.

Firm Suspension

Possibly more suitable for those weighing over 80kg, those who cycle more aggressively and those prepared to sacrifice some comfort in return for a more responsive ride.

LIGHTING

B - S P OKE YOUR BROMPTON Our lighting systems are designed for use with our bikes and are safe from damage in the folded package. Any of our lighting options can be fitted to any bike, though fitting a hub dynamo to a Superlight bike will mean the loss of the “extra-light” front wheel.

Battery Lighting (+158g) The LED rear lamp with integral reflectors is designed especially for Brompton and gives a good bright light: this stays fixed to the bike. At the front is the neat yet powerful S-Sun 3-LED lamp, easily removed for folding with a quick-release. Batteries are included.

Shimano Hub Dynamo Lighting

(+446g) Hub dynamos offer a very reliable lighting solution, and this hub dynamo, specifically adapted for the Brompton by Shimano, offers very good performance at a keen price. Features include a Busch & Müller halogen front lamp and a stand light function at the rear.

SON Hub Dynamo Lighting

(+236g) The Son hub is beautifully engineered, highly efficient, and will give years of reliable service. This option features a powerful Busch & Müller LED front lamp, an automatic light-sensing function and a stand light function at the front as well as the rear.

WEIG H I N G I T A L L U P For all the options and B-spoke possibilities, the question we are asked most often at bike shows is, “How much do they weigh?” Weight matters; people don’t buy bikes to save on a barbell. But it isn’t everything. Ride quality, alignment, efficiency and reliability are all likely to prove more important in use, yet are often overlooked by a fixation on weight. And the compactness and balance of the folded package is as important as weight in determining how easy a folded bike is to carry. We are constantly striving for new ways to reduce the weight of our bikes – our products are, after all, famous for their portability. But removing weight is not the only concern, and certainly not something we do at all costs. We could incorporate many lightweight materials into our bikes, but those that don’t already feature have been rejected for shortcomings in longevity, reliability or robustness. We want our bikes to stand the test of time, and robustness sometimes simply weighs more. Finally, not all bikes are weighed equally, so treat brochure data with caution... Brompton uses true weights, meaning we weigh our bikes with pedals and wheels/tyres attached; if mudguards are fitted, we weigh those too... We believe that you want to know how much your bike really weighs, not how much it weighs if we remove some parts. P.S. The answer to the question is: “Actual weight depends on model and configuration, but ranges between 9kg to 12.5kg, or 20 to 28lbs.”
