2010-11 Season preview The Boise State women’s tennis program opens a new chapter in 2010-11 as the Broncos enter their first season under the direction of interim head coach Beck Roghaar. Roghaar was named interim head coach in the fall after spending the spring of 2010 as assistant coach of the men’s tennis team. Roghaar will look to build upon one of the most successful seasons in program history by relying on four returning starters from the 2009-10 Western Athletic Conference Championship team. All four players saw action in at least 18 singles matches last year, while starting a majority of the Broncos duals.
Boise State will look to carry over its dominating play down the stretch last spring where the women went 21-1 in doubles and 37-5 in singles against WAC opponents. A big challenge this fall will be mixing up the doubles lineup, however, as the pair of Marlena Pietzuch and Stephanie Jasper is the only returning doubles tandem from a year ago. The Broncos will be tested early as the women are scheduled to start the first month of the spring season on the road. Once returning on Feb. 25 Boise State will enjoy a balanced schedule of duals home and away.
roster through the Broncos early season challenges. Megale, a Boise, Idaho (Arizona State University) native, returns for her final season as the team’s most accomplished player having garnered several individual achievements last season. She was voted first-team All-WAC in both singles and doubles for the second consecutive year, while also qualifying for the NCAA Individual Championships in doubles with Pichittra Thongdach. Megale started all 29 duals for Boise State at No. 1 doubles and No. 2 singles. She finished the spring with an 1816 overall singles record and a 30-11 record in doubles.

2010-11 Season Preview prior to the start of her junior season. She became an impact player for Boise State immediately, competing primarily at No. 2 doubles and No. 4 singles throughout the spring. Jasper finished the year with a 27-17 overall singles record, while also going 25-13 in doubles. Experience won’t come solely from Boise State’s upperclassmen; however, as the Broncos also return a pair of sophomores who are as battle tested as they come. Elyse Edwards, a native of Adelaide, South Australia (Sacred Heart), will look to build upon a stellar freshman campaign this season. After joining Boise State last spring she went on to start 25-of-29 duals in singles and 28of-29 duals in doubles. Edwards played to an 18-5
singles record and a 20-7 doubles record, playing primarily at No. 5 singles and No. 3 doubles. Fellow sophomore Marlena Pietzuch, a Hechingen, Germany (Wirtschaffsgymnasium Hechingen) native, is also expected to be a key contributor this season after seeing time in 24 duals last spring. Pietzuch played to a 13-1 record at No. 6 singles as a freshman en route to compiling a 32-8 overall record on the season. She also finished the year with a 26-12 doubles record, including a 16-8 record at No. 2 doubles with Jasper. Boise State will round out its lineup with a pair of newcomers; junior Sonia Klamczynska and freshman Morgan Basil. Klamczynska joins the Broncos from Warsaw, Poland where she had

been attending the Warsaw School of Social Psychology. Her resume includes placing fifth in singles and sixth in doubles at the championships of Poland, while also reaching a No. 10 ranking in Poland. Basil, a St. Petersburg, Fla. (Shorecrest Prep School) native, enters her first season at Boise State as well. She is coming off a very accomplished high school career in which she was a regional and district champion, as well as a state semifinalist.

Roghaar, who played for the Broncos from 2001-2005, rejoined the men’s program from UNLV at the start of the 2010 indoor season. Despite returning to Boise State at the semester, Roghaar hit the ground running. He helped head coach Greg Patton lead the Broncos to the NCAA Championships behind a 19-12 overall record. Boise State finished the season with nine wins over nationally ranked opponents and a 4-2 record in WAC competition. Before rejoining the Broncos Roghaar began his collegiate coaching career at UNLV in 2007. 2009-10 Season review
(Left to right) Bianca Jochimsen, Stephanie Jasper, Rocio Frej, Lauren Megale, Pichittra Thongdach, Marlena Pietzuch and Vivien Silfany.
“Historic” may be the best way to describe the 2009-10 season for the Boise State women’s tennis program. The Broncos won the second most duals (23) in program history, captured their first ever Western Athletic Conference regular season and tournament titles, and advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament for just the second time ever as well.
Perhaps the defining characteristic of the 2009-10 women’s tennis team was resiliency, however, and that became apparent immediately following the loss to Marshall. Boise State rebounded the following day to beat Penn State, 5-2, on the road in a match that proved to be a turning point in the season for the Broncos.
Boise State’s impressive run to history wouldn’t come easy, however, as the Broncos struggled to a 3-4 dual record through the first month of the indoor season. Losses to North Carolina (7-0) and DePaul (5-2) at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships kicked-off a tough three week schedule that would conclude with losses against Stanford (7-0) and Marshall (5-2).
Boise State returned home five days later to begin a six dual home stand from Feb. 26 to March 21. The Broncos went 6-0 during their home stretch, with wins coming over New Mexico (7-0), Washington State (6-1), Utah (5-2), BYU (5-2), Denver (4-3) and San Diego (4-3). With momentum on the women’s side Boise State would roll to a 17-1 record over the next

month and a half of the season. The Broncos only loss during the final half of the regular season would come in a 4-3 nail-biter at No. 59 UNLV. The brief stumble wouldn’t slow down Boise State’s drive to its first ever WAC title, though, as the Broncos went on another eight dual winning streak to finish the season. Perhaps the biggest win of the spring came in the season finale as Boise State played host to conference rival Fresno State. The Broncos entered the highly anticipated match-up with just a 1-10 all-time record against the Bulldogs; with their only win coming back in 1995. Fate would fall in favor of Boise State on this
2009-10 season review day; however, as the women held off a late Fresno State run to capture a 4-3 victory. The win secured a perfect 6-0 record against WAC opponents, while also capturing the first WAC regular season title in program history. It also gave Boise State the No. 1 overall seed heading into the conference tournament. As it turned out, the first-round bye would prove to be vital in the Broncos quest for the WAC crown. Boise State opened WAC tournament action in dominating fashion, beating Hawai’i 4-0 to earn a spot in the championship match. Standing in the way of the Broncos title run would be a rematch with Fresno State, however, this time on the Bulldogs home court. As had been the theme of the entire season, nothing would come easy for Boise State as the Broncos fell behind 3-1 to Fresno State putting the women on the verge of finishing runner-up for the fifth consecutive year. Boise State’s resilient spirit would shine brighter than ever with their backs against the wall, however, as the Broncos mounted a monumental rally to knock off the Bulldogs, 4-3. Two of Boise State’s final singles wins would come in three sets, including a 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 win by senior Bianca Jochimsen in the final match of the dual to give the Broncos the go-ahead point and the tournament title. The win also clinched an automatic berth into the NCAA tournament, which secured a match-up against No. 21 Iowa in the opening round of regional competition. Boise State opened up strong against the Hawkeyes and never looked back, rolling to a 4-1 win to advance to the second round of the NCAA tournament for just the second time in program history. The magic of the Broncos incredible run into the NCAA tournament would finally run out on May 14, however, as Boise State met its match in second-round action against No. 6 ranked Notre Dame. The Irish
scored a decisive win in doubles and never looked back, winning the first three singles matches to secure a 4-0 victory.
compiled a 14-6 record (16-8 overall). Elyse Edwards and Jochimsen anchored the Bronco doubles lineup, playing to a 15-5 record at No. 3 (18-5 overall).
The loss would put the Broncos goal of advancing to the Sweet 16 for the first time ever out of reach, but it couldn’t overshadow all of the team’s achievements throughout the year. Boise State finished with a 23-6 overall record, including a perfect 12-0 record at home. The Broncos also showed its strength on the national stage, winning four duals against ranked opponents and qualifying two players for the NCAA Individual Championships.
All of Boise State’s individual success helped the Broncos gain a great deal of national recognition throughout the spring, including a top-60 ITA ranking all season long. After opening the year ranked No. 34 Boise State rose as high as No. 33 on Jan. 26. The Broncos never fell below No. 57 in the national rankings and managed to climb back up to No. 38 in the final poll of the season.
Senior Pichittra Thongdach represented Boise State in singles at the NCAA tournament, while also teaming up with junior Lauren Megale to compete in the doubles competition. Thongdach opened up the NCAA tournament with the biggest individual win of the season for the Broncos, as she beat No. 10 ranked Denise Dy (Washington) 2-6, 6-1, 6-1 to advance to the second round. Her run at the tournament would end there with a 6-4, 7-6 loss to Ellah Nze of Duke. Thongdach and Megale would also drop their opening round doubles match to No. 17 Alexa Gaurachi and Courtney McLane of Alabama, 6-3, 5-7, 6-1, to end their week at nationals. Thongdach’s success at the NCAA championships capped another outstanding season individually for the Broncos, who saw four different players win at least 25 singles matches on the year. Freshman Marlena Pietzuch recorded a team-best 32-8 singles record, while Thongdach was 31-16, junior Stephanie Jasper was 27-17 and Jochimsen was 25-15. Doubles was also a staple of Boise State’s success once again as the Broncos played to an 86-36 overall record including a 61-23 dual doubles record. Thongdach and Megale led the way with a 30-12 overall record and a 21-7 record playing at No. 1 doubles. Jasper and Pietzuch saw most of their action at No. 2 where they

Boise State was also represented in each of the singles and doubles rankings throughout the spring as Thongdach maintained a top-60 singles ranking and doubles ranking with Megale all year. Thongdach opened the year season No. 43 and rose as high as No. 27 (Feb. 18). She and Megale also entered the season ranked No. 24 in doubles and climbed up to No. 23 on March 2. All of the Broncos achievements culminated with numerous postseason honors, both nationally and on the conference level. The conference honored Thongdach and head coach Mark Tichenor as WAC Player of the Year and Coach of the Year, respectively. The Broncos also received multiple all-conference honors as Thongdach and Megale were named firstteam All-WAC singles and doubles, while Jochimsen was voted second-team All-WAC singles. Regionally, Thongdach and Tichenor were honored once again as the ITA selected Tichenor as Mountain Region Coach of the Year and Thongdach the Cissie Leary Award for Sportsmanship winner. Boise State’s final piece of national recognition came in the form of academics, with the Broncos receiving ITA Academic All-America honors. Individually, Jasper and Jochimsen were selected as Academic All-Americans as well.
