The Home of the Broncos
Mountain Cove Softball Field was officially christened March 6, 2009, when Boise State defeated Northwest Nazarene, 11-4, in the State of Idaho Invitational. The park was renovated for the inaugural season of Boise State softball through a joint project between Boise State University and the Boise School District. The field was given a new playing suface, a press box, dugouts, batting cages and expanded seating. The stadium now holds approximately 500 fans and the field measures 200 feet to the outfield fences in all directions. The Broncos began play at their home park with a seven-game winning streak, finishing 7-9 in 2009. They posted their first winning record at home in 2010, going 13-10 at Mountain Cove. Boise State will play 14 games at Mountain Cove in 2011, beginning March 4-6, with the SpringHill Suites Invitational. Seattle and Southern Utah will travel to Boise to take place in the second-annual event. Boise State will also host Western Athletic Conference series against Nevada (March 25-26), Louisiana Tech (April 8-9) and Fresno State (April 29-30).

2011 PREVIEW
2011 Bronco Softball
Broncos Look to Build on Success Boise State softball enters its third season of existence fresh off a third-place finish in the Western Athletic Conference. Fifteen letterwinners return from a Bronco group that won nine of their last 12 regular-season WAC games and placed third at the conference tournament. Head coach Erin Thorpe looks to carry the momentum of a strong finish in the program’s second season into this year.
“We have four returning pitchers who all saw time last year,” Thorpe said. “They are all one year wiser and one year better. We are also looking forward to great things from Morgan. We expect all five of our pitchers will see time in the circle this year.”
Crump was tabbed a preseason All-WAC selection after breaking nearly every major single-season pitching record a year ago. She The 2011 squad features no seniors, but does pitched 170 innings in her 37 appearances, not lack experience as eight starters are back including 29 starts on her way to 16 wins. The Broncos plated eight or more “We are looking for her to come out expecting runs in 18 ballgames, while only being shutout to do the same thing this year.” four times. Boise State was one of just 32 teams in the country to average at least one home run per game. “We’re definitely more of a power offensetype team,” Thorpe said. “That’s kind of been my philosophy with starting a program. We needed to get fans and I thought we would get more fans in the seats if we had an entertaining team. We just hope to put on a show every time we’re at home and it’s been pretty successful for us.” The Broncos may lean on their big bats, but the entire pitching staff is back for the 2011 season and saw marked improvement as 2010 went along. Pitchers Boise State returns all four players who saw time in the circle in 2010, and added to the stable with one decorated freshman pitcher. Juniors Allie Crump and Aubray Zell saw the bulk of the action, but were aided by sophomores Ashley Collier and Lela Work who worked mostly out of the bullpen. Morgan Barnes joins the veteran group after a highlysuccessful prep career at Grants Pass High Junior pitcher Allie Crump was selected to the AllSchool (Grants Pass, Ore.). WAC Preseason Team.

Zell led the Broncos with a 3.16 ERA in 2010, appearing in 29 games and making 23 starts. She finished with a 10-10 record and posted three shutouts. Work made 23 appearances, 20 in a relief situation. The Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, native burst onto the scene at the WAC Tournament. Work pitched eight innings, surrendering just two hits and zero earned runs in three games to earn a spot on the alltournament team.

Collier provided the Broncos with important depth as a freshman. She appeared in 13 games and made five starts. The Sparks, Nev., native picked up a complete-game win in her first-career start against Wichita State (March 7).
“As a third-year program, we have done a lot of our initial recruiting to seek out versatile athletes,” Thorpe said. “As we get deeper into the program, we will be looking more to recruit players to take specific roles. At this point, we have intentionally signed very versatile athletes. That allows us to put the best team Barnes enters her first season of collegiate on the field without having to sacrifice for softball after dominating the high school ranks. position limitations.” She compiled a 78-11 record in the circle and struck out 884 batters in her career, leading In all the uncertainty, junior Christina Grants Pass to a pair of state championships. Sophomore Megan Harvey is back after making 15 starts at catcher before injury relegated her to a hitting role. “Megan (Harvey) has a lot of offensive tools,” Thorpe said. “She is a great on-base hitter, and she does have great power.” Junior Tazz Weatherly took on the role of backup catcher for most of the season, but with Harvey back in the fold, will be looked to for outfield support. Sophomore Georgia Behne
Junior first baseman Christina Capobianco is the Broncos’ active leader in hits, home runs and RBI.

Infield The 2011 Broncos feature a host of possibilities to fill out the four infield positions. Junior Kellie Caplan returns after being named secondteam All-WAC in 2010, when she made 32 starts in the infield. Caplan could play up the middle or in the Bronco outfield. The dilemma for Thorpe and her staff is not an uncommon “Lela did a great job in the relief spot,” Thorpe one as the Broncos will have a lot of options to said. “We expect her to be used much more in draw from when filling out their line-up cards that role this season.” this season.

Freshman Devon Bridges could also spell Thorpe said, “and we are expecting a better Capobianco at first base, while Crump may season with more consistent at bats.” see time there as well. Bourke finished the season strong as she “Devon came in with a lot of power potential picked up WAC Hitter of the Week honors in and we are hoping she is able to make an the final regular season weekend. She hit .316 impact this season,” Thorpe said. “Allie has a for the year making most of her starts in right lot of offensive potential. She hit for average field. Alvarez and Bourke tied for third on the last year and she has some power.” team with 66 total bases. The biggest void left by the class of 2010 is two-time all-region selection Kathy Cox at third base. Cox started 110 of the Broncos’ 113 games during her career at third as she led the team in batting average, hits, home runs and RBI both seasons in the blue and orange. It will be a team effort to replace her, and the Broncos have a number of players who could step into the role.
Outfield Seven different Broncos made starts in the outfield in 2010, and six of them return this season. Boise State also added two freshmen to the outfield fold for the 2011 campaign. The corps includes sophomore Brittany Barcellos and freshman Natalie Kelley in addition to multi-position players Bourke, Bridges, Caplan, Collier and Weatherly. Despite the number of options, developing a regular outfield alignment is a priority for Thorpe. “We are hoping to find a consistent outfield line-up to build some continuity and allow for us to reach our potential,” Thorpe said. “With most of our outfielders playing multiple positions it has led to a lot of movement over the last two seasons.” Most of the Broncos’ speed rests in the outfield. The returning Broncos who played in the outfield accounted for 46 of the 51 stolen bases Boise State has coming back in 2011.
“Using our speed is something we are Junior Kellie Caplan will play infield and outfield conscious of,” Thorpe said. “We went from 14 for the Broncos in 2011. stolen bases in 2009 to 77 last season. We are looking to grow on that.” Possibilities abound at the hot corner where fans could see junior Kelly Sweeney, sophomore Jessica Kraft or freshmen Mackzenie Whyte, Trisha Nobriga or Jessica O’Donnell. The middle of the infield will see many of the same names which are choices at third base, with sophomores Vanessa Alvarez and Holly Bourke additional options at second base. Alvarez made 47 starts as a freshman, 45 as the designated player, and became the Broncos’ regular clean-up hitter. “Vanessa had a great freshman campaign,”
Sophomore Holly Bourke stole 12 bases on 13 attempts in 2010.

The Schedule The Broncos will embark on their second season with a full Division I schedule in 2011, highlighted by 13 games against 2010 NCAA Tournament participants. Three of Boise State’s opponents advanced all the way to the Women’s College World Series. “We are excited about a lot of our contests this season,” Thorpe said. “We are going to get tested early, but that helped us last year. We need to start stronger this year. We need to see strides in some of our statistical categories like winning percentage and RPI. We would really like to see our team get to the postseason, and the schedule we put together can help us do that.” Boise State begins its season at the Long Beach State Kickoff Tournament, Feb. 12-13, against Loyola Marymount and Long Beach State. It is the first of six early-season tournaments featuring the Broncos this season. Boise State will open its home slate with the second-
annual SpringHill Suites Invitational, March 4-6, at Mountain Cove Softball Field. “Tournaments are important,” Thorpe said. “We get a lot of different looks, and have the opportunity to play games against quality teams from conferences that some consider stronger than the WAC.” The WAC will be no slouch in 2011, however. Defending champion Hawai’i returns six starters from its historic run to the Women’s College World Series. Fresno State took second place in the conference last season and earned a postseason berth. The Bulldogs’ 2-2 showing at the Los Angeles Regional continued their streak of advancing to each of the NCAA’s 29 postseasons. The Broncos will travel to Hawai’i April 22-23, and host Fresno State April 29-30, in the final regular-season homestand of the season. Boise State will start conference play at home March 25-26, against Nevada.

Erin Thorpe
2011 Bronco Softball
Head Coach Third Season UC San Diego, 2000
Erin Thorpe became the first head coach in the history of Boise State softball, Sept. 4, 2007. Now, as the Broncos enter their third season, Thorpe looks to stay on the ascending path she created as she helped build the program from scratch. After surprising some by making the 2009 Western Athletic Conference Tournament in Boise State’s inaugrual season, the Broncos turned more heads in 2010. Thorpe led the team back to the WAC Tournament after finishing third in the regular-season standings finishing with a 13-8 record in conference (29-32 overall). Along the way Boise State piled up five series wins and two sweeps in conference play. The Broncos also earned their first win against nine-time WAC Champion Fresno State. The success carried into the postseason as Thorpe led Boise State to three wins in the WAC Tournament, including a thrilling come-from-behind, nine-inning game against San Jose State to reach the semifinal. The Broncos ultimately dropped a heartbreaker against Fresno State, 6-5, to fall out of the tournament and place third. The 2010 season also brought a number of off-field firsts. Kathy Cox became Boise State’s first all-conference player with her selection to the All-WAC First Team. Kellie Caplan and Allie Crump were named to the All-WAC Second Team. Cox also earned NFCA All-Pacific Region for the second-consecutive year. In her first season at the helm, Thorpe led the Broncos to a 22-30 overall record for the 2009 season. Thorpe needed only three games to earn her first Division I coaching victory when the Broncos beat Fordham 8-4 in their first weekend of the season. Thorpe also led the Broncos to a series sweep of Utah State in their first WAC series. Another milestone came when the Broncos not only made the WAC Tournament, but proceeded to upset San Jose State 8-4 in their first WAC Tournament game before losing to Fresno State and Hawai’i. Prior to Boise State, Thorpe was the head softball coach at Whittier College in Whittier, Calif., for five years (200207). In August of 2004, she also became the school’s senior woman administrator and in January of 2005 she was named assistant athletic director for compliance.
14

2011 Bronco Softball
Assistant Coach Third Season South Carolina, Spartanburg, 1999 Justin Kloczko enters his third season as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the Boise State softball team. Kloczko was hired in 2008 prior to the inaugural season of Boise State softball in 2009. During his first year with the Broncos, Kloczko helped coach the team to a 22-30 record. The Broncos earned a series of firsts as they won their first game in program history, swept their first WAC series and won their first WAC Tournament game. Kloczko helped the Broncos build on the success of the first season with a resounding 2010 campaign. Boise State won five conference series, including a pair of sweeps, on its way to finishing third in the WAC with a 29-32 overall record (13-8 in conference games). Kloczko and the Broncos carried the momentum into the postseason where they won three games on their way to a third-place showing. Prior to Boise State, Kloczko worked as an assistant softball coach at UNLV from 2001-03, where he worked with catchers and outfielders and served as the program’s recruiting coordinator. Shelly Prochaska Assistant Coach First Season Oregon State, 2004
Shelly Prochaska enters her first season as an assistant coach for Boise State University, coming to the program after serving as interim head coach at Idaho State University.
Before arriving in Pocatello, Prochaska worked at Kenyon College as an assistant coach in softball and volleyball from 2006-08. She was named interim head volleyball coach at Kenyon in November, 2007. Prochaska’s softball teams at Kenyon combined for a 32-34 record, including 14-14 in the North Central Athletic Conference. She has also spent the last six years as a clinician at various softball camps throughout Oregon and Ohio, specializing in pitching and catching. Prochaska began her coaching career as an undergraduate assistant at Oregon State University during the 2004 campaign. Her stint as a coach at OSU came on the heels of one of the most accomplished playing careers in school history. Playing in 261 games and making 255 starts from 2000-03, the majority coming at catcher, Prochaska saw action in more games than any student-athlete to don a Beaver uniform. She left Corvallis with her name in the top five in eight different career batting categories, and became the first OSU softball player to record 200 hits, 100 RBI and 100 runs scored in her career. She garnered All-Pac-10 and Easton All-America honors as a senior. Prochaska was also named all-region in 2001. Prochaska earned an invitation to and attended the USA National Team Tryouts in 2003 in Chula Vista, Calif. She continued her playing career as a member of the Portland All-Star Team in 2004. In the summer of 2007 Prochaska joined the New England Riptide of the National Professional Fastpitch League. A native of Aloha, Ore., Prochaska graduated from OSU in 2004 with a degree in health promotion and education.

Juniors
“We have seven juniors who all came in as freshmen, so they’ve seen the growing pains. Now with no seniors in front of them they’re being asked to step up and guide this team, lead this team and show this team how to win. We’re continually seeing strides with them learning what it takes to win and dedicate themselves to something.” -Head Coach Erin Thorpe
MEET THE BRONCOS Sophomores
“The sophomores definitely showed some freshman nerves getting their feet wet in the college game last year. We’ve definitely seen some improvement from the end of last year in that group, and we’re expecting they will continue those strides into this season.” -Head Coach Erin Thorpe
Freshmen “These freshmen will have the opportunity to be on a faster learning curve than our previous incoming classes because they have the benefit of being able to watch and learn from two full groups in front of them.” -Head Coach Erin Thorpe
