2011 boise state cross country WHERE THE BRONCOS TRAIN... THE BOISE TRAIL SYSTEM
MILITARY RESERVE This 460 acre natural area is named for Fort Boise and the associated military maneuvers that were performed here between the 1860’s and 1940’s. The area served several purposes, including the staging of gunnery practice into the hills above. After the military halted its operations, the community recognized the importance of this area and the Boise Front for recreation and wildlife values. Boise City acquired title to the property from the Federal government for “recreation and public purposes”. It is managed as a recreation and wildlife reserve, with human activities allowed in ways that do not detract from the natural values. Camelsback/Hulls Gulch Reserve These two city reserves are popular and busy. Hulls Gulch Reserve was spared from development in the early 1990’s with the help of concerned citizens and local and federal funding. With Hulls Creek as the back bone, wildlife find the area to their liking as well. The ponds at the end of 9th St. were designed for flood control but also are a magnet for birds and other wildlife. The large pond is fenced to give the wildlife an area that is undisturbed by people and pets. Camels Back is undergoing a “face lift” with restoration efforts. Nearly 3 miles of trail are available on the hill while an effort is underway to close and rehabilitate the steep hill climbs that have been eroding. The two rare plants found in the reserve are also being protected by these efforts.
These two geological landmarks located near the Old Idaho Penitentiary are steeped in history and beauty. Native Americans consider this area sacred. Native plant populations are found clinging to the slopes around Table Rock, providing a glimpse of what the entire Boise Front may have looked like at one time. Old quarry roads and the Table Rock tram route are now used as trails that provide a wide range of experiences and trail difficulties. The views aren’t half bad either. UPPER 8TH STREET TRAILS The network of trails in the upper 8th Street area were built specifically for Off Highway Vehicles, (OHV’s) with access from the 8th Street Parking lot. The Hulls Gulch Interpretive Trail is in this area as well and is a Pedestrian Only trail. With this mix of trail uses it is important to respect others and share the trails.

2011 cross country preview
2011 SEASON PREVIEW... Entering their first season in the Mountain West, the Boise State cross country teams look to bridge their recent successes from the Western Athletic Conference to their new conference affiliate. The Bronco men, who won the 2010 WAC team championship, and the Bronco women begin their 2011 journey on Saturday, Sept. 10 at the fourth annual Roger Curran Invitational, one of three meets run in the Treasure Valley. The second local meet, the Bob Firman Invitational, will be run just two weeks later on Saturday, Sept. 24, followed by the Coyote Invitational hosted by College of Idaho on Oct. 7. Although there are a handful of local meets, the Broncos add two regular season road meets that are critical to their schedule. Splitting the squad on Sept. 24, assistant coach for cross country and distance, Brad Wick, will take the teams’ top runners to the Roy Griak Invitational in St. Paul, Minn., while the remainder of the Broncos stay to
compete in the local favorite, Bob Firman Invitational. The second and final regular season road trip for the orange and blue falls on Oct. 15, when they head to Sunnyvale, Calif., to race at the Santa Clara Bronco Invitational. “Our team will be really focused on the Roy Griak and Santa Clara Invites this year,” said Wick. “They are two big meets to get ready for and will help us the most in preparing for the post-season.” Looking at the post-season schedule, Boise State heads to Fort Collins, Colo., for the 2011 Mountain West Championships on Oct. 29, while penciling in trips to Palo Alto, Calif., for the 2011 NCAA West Regional Championships on Nov. 12 and Terre Haute, Ind., for the NCAA National Championships on Nov. 21. 2011 boise state cross country ...continued from page 5 young men’s and women’s teams. The men feature two sophomores and 11 freshmen, while the women boast one senior, four juniors, 19 sophomores and 11 freshmen. “Both of our teams are really young this year,” said Wick. “Although it is a rebuilding year, we still have a lot of talent and will do well. We are further along as a team than we were a year ago, despite the youth.” For the men, Wick and head coach for track and field and cross country coach J.W. Hardy both expect returners Allan Schroeder and Drew O’donoghue-McDonald to lead the pack. “Allan and Drew both had really great training summers and we expect them to be the team leaders,” said Wick. Looking to make an immediate impact in the top-seven are freshmen Vince Hamilton, John Robinson and Jared Lehning who had a good showing at the team’s preseason time trial. For the women, Emma Bates looks to lead the way, returning as the 2010 WAC Freshman of the Year. Helping in a leadership role will be the lone senior Melody Braden who will give experience to the young team. Included in the leadership role will be the junior class who will combine with a talented sophomore class.
return stronger for their sophomore campaigns. Taryn Treadway and Rici Morrill look to move into the top-seven spots after floating just outside in 2010. “Taryn and Rici have made great improvements over the summer,” said Wick. “They are both definitely contenders for the top-seven this season.” Wick and Hardy are also excited about a talented group of 11 freshmen women who are joining the roster this season. “We have a great freshman class who is ahead of where our 2010 freshman class was last season,” said Wick. “It will make our team that much stronger. I am particularly impressed with Hayley Gregoire who will be looking to make the travel squad.” With a challenging road schedule and a handful of meets in the Treasure Valley, the Broncos are hopeful of another successful season. Overall the men’s and women’s teams have put in hard work over the summer to return at a higher level for the 2011 season. “With all their hard off-season training, we really feel the bar has been raised for both programs this season,” said Wick.
“We have six of our top-seven returning from last season,” said Wick. “We should be much improved with that year of experience under our belts.” Young returners include Marisa VanderMalle, who redshirted her freshman season but promises to be a top-seven contender. Tessa Murray, Alyssa Boucher and Sarah Bisterfeldt were regulars in the lineup in 2010 and

2011 boise state cross country 2010 SEASON REVIEW...
2010 WAC Champions
The 2010 Boise State cross country season was one for the record books with the men’s team capturing the Western Athletic Conference Championship for the first time in school history and the women running at the NCAA West Regional for only the fourth time ever as a team. Individual honors topped the list as well with Emma Bates earning the WAC Freshman of the Year title after her third-place finish at the WAC Championships. Jeff Howard followed suit a week later being named to the USTFCCCA All-Region team after his 17th-place finish at the west regional. With the winning of the WAC title, came honors for the Bronco coaching staff as head coach J.W. Hardy earned the WAC Men’s Cross Country Coach of the Year honor. Individually the Broncos landed Sawyer Bosch on the All-WAC First-Team, while Allan Schroeder, Drew O’donoghue-McDonald and Howard were on the secondteam. For the women, Bates was named to the first team while fellow freshman, Alyssa Boucher was named to the second-team. Setting up for a successful post-season, the Broncos earned six WAC Athlete of the Week honors during the regular season. In the first week of competition (Sept. 6-12), the honors were swept by freshmen O’donoghue-McDonald on the men’s side and Bates on the women’s side. A week later (Sept. 13-19) Bates repeated with her second honor. In October (13-19) Howard picked up his first honor of the season, while Scott Foley and Kate Jette swept the honors a week later (Oct. 20-26).

Sawyer Bosch and Brad Bogdan
As a team, Boise State won two meets on the men’s side and one for the women. Both teams captured the season opener NNU Roger Curran Invitational, while the men added the WAC title late in the season. Individually the men earned nine top-10 finishes on the season, while the women earned seven. O’donoghue-McDonald led the men’s team with a win at the NNU Roger Curran Invitational (Sept. 11), while Bosch, Brad Bogdan, Foley and Howard all finished within the top-10. Howard went on to place second at the Santa Clara Invitational (Oct. 16), as well as finishing as the top runner at the Roy Griak Invitational (16th) and NCAA West Regional (17th). Bosch, Schroeder and O’donoghue-McDonald earned top-10 finishes at the WAC Championships.

2010 cross country review For the women, Bates was the top finisher in all but two meets. She led Marisa VanderMalle, Tessa Murray and Carly Gerard in top-10 finishes at the Roger Curran Invite, while also placing eighth at the S.C. Bronco Invite and third at the WAC Championships. Kate Jette rounded out the Broncos earning top-10 finishes with her eighth-place finish at the College of Idaho Coyote Invitational (Oct. 21). Rounding out the season, the Broncos raced at the NCAA West Regional, where the men earned a seventh-place finish out of 25 teams, the best finish in school history. The women made their first showing since 2005 as a team, placing 21st out of 31 teams. As a team and individually, the Broncos came together as a young team, producing a successful and record-breaking season and look to continue the tradition in 2011 when they enter the Mountain West.
