BOISE STATE TENURE (1993-98, 2003-present)
Coach of the Year (2004-07, 2009), Big West Coach of the Year (1997) and Big Sky Coach of the Year (1993-96).
Boise State men’s tennis has become a familiar player on the national collegiate tennis scene thanks in large part to head coach Greg Patton, who enters his 16th season at the helm of the Bronco men’s tennis program. Patton has led Boise State to six NCAA Tournament appearances in the past seven years and four conference titles since the beginning of his second tenure in 2003.
Patton has been credited with turning Boise State into a national tennis power since his arrival in 1993. In his first season at the reigns of the Broncos, Patton led the team to its first conference championship since 1974. His success did not stop there as Boise State won the Big Sky championship four consecutive seasons (1993-96) and the Big West Championship its first year in the league (1997). During the 1997 season, Boise State was ranked as high as second in the nation and went to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championships, finishing fifth in the process.
Patton has put together an impressive 685-321 (.681) record over 30 years as a collegiate head coach, which currently ranks him fifth nationally for most wins by an active NCAA Division I men’s tennis coach. A large part of that success has come during his 15 years at Boise State, where he has posted a 334-128 (.723) record while winning nine conference championships in three different leagues. Since returning to Boise State in 2003, Patton guided the team to Western Athletic Conference titles in four of seven seasons (2003, 2005-07) as well as a WAC regular season championship in 2009. Patton has also coached numerous players to All-America status during his Bronco 15 year tenure, including Luke Shields in both singles and doubles, as well as Thomas Schoeck, Guillaume Bouvier, Ernesto Diaz and Albin Polonyi. While successfully leading the Broncos program, Patton has received many individual honors including being inducted to the Boise State University Athletic Hall of Fame (2001), NCAA National Coach of the Year (1997), Intercollegiate Tennis Association Mountain Region Coach of the Year (1994, 1997, 2004), WAC
Coaching Highlights During his 30 year coaching career Patton has taken his teams to 17 NCAA Tournament appearances, won 20 conference championships, earned 23 AllAmerican awards, 67 all-conference honorees and 12 conference players of the year. In addition, he has received 19 coach of the year honors: two NCAA/ ITA National Coach of the Year, three ITA Mountain Region Coach of the Year and 14 conference coach of the year honors.
OTHER COACHING EXPERIENCE Patton was the U.S. Collegiate National Team coach the last three years (2009-11) where he guided the team to two world championships (2009 and 2011) and one runner-up finish. Following the 1998 season at Boise State, Patton accepted a position as a coach with the U.S. National Team. Patton coached at the junior level from 19982003 leading the National Boys’ 14s to the 2003 World Cup Championship, defeating teams from Argentina and Spain in the process.

Prior to becoming the head coach of Boise State in 1993, Patton coached at U.C. Irvine from 1979-92. During his tenure he led the Anteaters to nine Big West championships (1981, 1983-85, 1987-90, 1992) and multiple top 25 finishes in the final national rankings. He was named NCAA Coach of the Year in 1987 and was a five-time Big West Coach of the Year. He was elected to the UC Irvine Athletic Hall of Fame in 2000. Patton played his collegiate tennis at U.C. Santa Barbara from 1972-74. His first job as a coach was with his alma mater from 1976-78 before spending time at CSU Bakersfield (1978-79) and then moving onto U.C. Irvine.

About Andrew Bettles “When out in public Andy has the air of an English Gentleman due to his genteel disposition but once he enters the domain of the tennis court he becomes a Dr.Jekell and Mr Hyde. He is one tough, determined and vicious bulldog from the Winston Churchill mold. Even though he is the youngest player on the Bronco squad, his international tennis experience empowers him the wisdom, knowledge and tools of a doctoral student of tennisology.
Greg Patton, Head Coach
About Damian Hume “His teammates refer to him as “Damian Huge” due to his big and explosive game and specifically to how huge his heart is. His quickness is legendary in collegiate tennis for he is faster than the high speed internet. Bring earplugs to Damian’s matches for you are assured to hear sonic booms emit from him chasing down his opponents shots. Through hard work, intelligence and passion he has become the top player in the region and one of the elite players in the Nation.”
Greg Patton, Head Coach
About James Meredith “This nationally ranked collegiate player has a game that is so smooth that the silk industry could market the Meredith image on their fabric. He has the coolness and poise of a Nijna Monk. Don’t’ let his laid back persona fool you, beneath that exterior of a relaxed holy man is the heart of a calculating warrior whose shots are ruthless. His position at #1 two years ago confirmed the fact that there is no player in collegiate tennis who would not fall prey to the barrage of his ground strokes and booming serve.”
Greg Patton, Head Coach
About Garrett Patton “The day that “Gman” was born, he was weaned on Bronco Tennis lore. His one handed backhand is a buzz saw that was weaned in the crib and polished over years of fine tuning. When he “releases” this shot, it is a one handed rocket that has been launched. His positive, laid back, and happy go lucky attitude has the entire tennis team believing that he will go into a career as a yoga instructor on a tropical island when his tennis playing days are concluded.”
Greg Patton, Head Coach
About Filipp Pogostkin “After undergoing knee surgery, Pogo is like the legendary Phoenix who is reborn from the ashes to soar again in the tennis heavens. With almost a year off the courts to rehab, our former #2/3 player is hungry to reestablish his credentials on the tennis court. His shots are regaining the old “Pogo” moxie in which he swings away to corner to corner with confidence. It’s indicative that he is regaining his confidence and is ready to spend hours working for the right ball in order to find his explosive terminating shot to win the point. ”
Greg Patton, Head Coach
About Aidan Reid “Aidan’s tennis game is like listening to a classical music concert in a beautiful French Classical Opera Hall. His stroke production and technique is flawless. His game combines art and science. Aidan’s stroke fundamentals are an artistic masterpiece on the scale of a Michelangelo painting in the Sistine Chapel. One day you will probably see Aidan’s tennis techniques in a tennis training manual depicting the perfect example of how to hit the ball for efficiency and simplicity.”
Greg Patton, Head Coach
About Scott Sears “When Scott (Spartacus) pulls his racquet out of his racquet bag it seems that all he needs is a sword and sheath. His game is sheer physicality and muscularity dominating and intimidating his opponent. To watch a match with Scott is to experience how tennis was played in the Ancient Coliseum with the Gladiators. His matches are on the scale of “Ben Hur” and “Hercules” movie epics with intense battle scenes, excitement and passionate athleticism.”
Greg Patton, Head Coach
About Nathan Sereke “Nathan “the Big Easy,” should be called the “Biggest Easy”. He makes hitting tennis balls look so natural, like Paula Abdul makes dancing look easy, like Kobe Bryant shooting baskets seems sweet and Tom Brady throwing precision touchdown passes. The only thing that is easier going than his tennis game is his quick smile that charms the ball into the court. His massive arm spread is like a fish net that covers the entire Mediterranean Sea. He is starting to serve up missiles now that he is utilizing his 6’7” height advantage and serving out of trees.”
Greg Patton, Head Coach
About Erik Sheldon “Erik is our popular 5 year veteran who could charm the grouchiest ogre into dancing a gig. He exemplifies the Bronco brotherhood and culture and brings five years of wisdom and knowledge to his teammates about the journey of collegiate tennis. He is a human backboard on the return of serve. His return of serve is as inevitable as a bright sunny day in Arizona and the “ouch” of filing taxes every April. It is always going to happen.”
Greg Patton, Head Coach
About Freddy Walsh “Freddy is presently red shirting this season in order to tune up his aggressive baseline game for his final year of eligibility for next year. Freddy is a marksman from the baseline who is an expert hunter. His game is one of sitting back, taking aim, and bulls-eye, he has frustrated his prey who has been caught in the crosshairs of the scope on his racquet before they know it.

In Memory of STEVE APPLETON March 31, 1960 — Feb. 3, 2012 “Boise State lost one of its own today. A former Bronco tennis player who never forgot his alma mater, Steve graduated in business and went on to lead one of the nation’s premier companies and enrich in so many ways the community he called home. He played a critical role in transforming Boise State into a research university serving the tech economy of Idaho. I valued his friendship, his generous support, and especially the advice and counsel he provided me personally as we navigated our way through the recent recession. Our thoughts and prayers are with Dalynn, his children and his family as well as his colleagues at Micron.” -- President Bob Kustra, Boise State University Steve Appleton came to Boise State University in 1978 on a tennis scholarship. He was captain of the tennis team his senior year and won the Big Sky doubles championship. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business management in 1982. In 2001, he received the university’s prestigious Silver Medallion award for his service to the university and in May 2007 he was awarded an honorary doctorate. Appleton served as co-chair of the university’s most recent comprehensive fundraising campaign for scholarships, programs and buildings. He also was a Boise State University Foundation board member from 1995-2002 and was a lifetime Chaffee Guild member. He was instrumental in the development of Boise State’s College of Engineering, which offered its first classes in 1996, and construction of the Appleton Tennis Complex on the Boise State campus. His support has been invaluable to both the College of Business and Economics and the College of Engineering. In 1999, he established the Micron Foundation, which has led to several generous donations to Boise State programs and initiatives, including the Micron Business and Economics Building at the corner of University and Capitol, slated to open later this year, and doctoral programs in the departments of Materials Science and Engineering and Electrical and Computer Engineering.
