For the Love of Hands

~ Week One Research ~ ~ Proposal ~ Exploring how technology is changing the way designers create, especially those who make their crafts by hand. Has technology made things easier or do designers miss making mistakes and mess while experimenting with different colours, materials and media. Is technology damaging the livelihood of small designers or is it helping them to grow and reach new platforms, people, artists - people they wouldn’t have normally met without that social media platform?
~ Purpose ~
~ Research ~ After reading the manuscript, I decided that I wanted to create a publication that was purely based on interviews from artists based in Melbourne, but also a couple from interstate as well. By having my publication as interview style it gives it more of a personal feel and you really get to know and understand the artist, their work style and their quirky personalities.

To create a beautiful publication that shares the beauty of hand crafted designs. A book that is aesthetically pleasing to the eyes and works brilliantly as a coffee table feature book. Something that you can pick up and it makes you smile.
~ Week Two Visual Direction + Presentation ~ ~Visual Direction ~ I wanted there to be a focus on white space. Uncluttered design and simplistic. In these examples there is a strong use of strong imagery and typographic elements. Everything is laid out so the images and text aren’t competing against each other which is something I’d like to aim for in my own publication.
~ Look + Feel ~ I went for three different themes that I liked the concept of for my publication. Monochromatic - that has a focus on white space and strong imagery and boldness to it. Pastel something a little lighter and not as serious as something like a monochromatic theme. And collage because that fits with the theme of my publication.
~ Week Three Finalisation ~ ~ Book size ~ I ended up on an oversized A4 for my publication size. I like the feeling of it when you hold it in your hands - similar to a magazine. This size also gives me the opportunity to play with space and have a lot of flexibility.
Over sized A4 21cm x 28 cm
~ Grid layout ~ I went for a 5x5 grid layout. I found this really worked well for a column width and looked nice with both styles of interviews that I decided to put into my publication. It also gave me a lot of freedom to play with white space as that was something I really wanted to have playing a strong part in my publication. ~ Cover Design ~ I wanted something that was simplistic and again had a lot of white space. The theme of the rectangle carries throughout the publication. I also wanted to have a plastic slip with a hand-painted pattern on it to reflect the theme of the publication.

~ Typefaces ~ I chose Mr Eaves San OT as it was clear and easy to read. It also had a little bit of a quirkiness to it which I really felt like it suited my publication.
~ Week Four Spread Development ~
Initial layout ideas
~ Week Five Spread Development ~
Fixed up double spacing issues, layout and size of some of the images and fixed up any widows and hyphens.
~ Week Six Original Content Development ~ Some examples of my hand generated illustrations for the publication. Some obviously worked and some illustrations I felt like they didn’t suit the style of my publication/ they weren’t sophisticated enough.
~ Week Seven Some Final Spreads ~
~ Project One - Evaluation ~ Of the selected topics for the assignment topics I chose hand-craft but I didn’t like any of the manuscripts because I found them all to be pretty bland and boring so I decided to take my own approach to the project. Hand-craft and technology is a topic that I am very interested in, especially when it comes to thinking about my future career as a designer and the type of path I would like to take as a designer. I’ve always been encouraged to be creative and make things from hand and this is a skill and passion that I would love to pass onto as many people as possible. ~ Reflection ~ I don’t think I would have changed anything with my publication as a whole. While I liked the white space, I think I would have liked to incorporate a bit more colour/ hand illustrated files into my publication but I’m not sure how I would have incorporated it in with the selected artists work. I would have also liked to have used more hand generated typography but unfortunately I ran out of time.

~ Week Nine- Digital Publication Specifics ~ ~ Digital Purpose: ~ Look ~ To create an online feature interview It will have handcrafted feel to it with Jasmine Dowling and to create despite being on a digital platform. a “how to” “DIY” around calligraphy The use of hand created text will not typography and how you begin but only link to the topic of the digital to then also show how to turn your publication but will also give the hand type into a digital file. feeling of hand craft This relates back to the theme of my publication of the craft of hand creating and how technology can benefit artists and designers.

Example of a how to guide that I would like to draw inspiration from for my own how to use guide for the digital publication.
More examples and inspiration for the style of my digital publication. I like the roughness of all these examples and you still get a feeling of this even though its digital.
~ Week Ten - Layout Brainstorming/ Wireframes ~
The aim is to have a lot of white spacing I don’t want there to be too many animation continuing that theme from my printed affects put onto my publication so they publication. I thought it would also be an take away from the main features of the interesting idea to add a block of colour to publication. For example having all the make the selected typography really stand contents page fade up might be a bit too much out or that different elements weren’t so and take too long to load when people just lost on the white page. This colour would be want to get into the publication! continued throughout the digital publication. Probably the same pink that I used on the dust belly band and inside pages on my printed publication to the two projects can clearly link together.

I really liked the direction these two spreads were going but I felt like the one on the left was still a bit too heavy for the look that i was going for so I decided to make the introduction into a separate page to introduce Jasmine which I felt like it gave it more of a personal touch to it.

Another feature of this interactive PDF will to have a step by step instructions of how to turn your own hand generated typography into a digital file. I will be doing this all with the typography that I created for the video so that it is all connected and has a lot of my hand generated work!
~ Project Two - Evaluation ~ I really enjoyed putting together this second project. Learning this process of how to make things animate in InDesign is a really different skill to learn and in fact I didn’t even realise it could be done until we were told this is what we would be using to create our interactive PDF’s. Overall, I’m really happy with the look and feel of the interactive PDF. I feel like it follows on well from the printed publication and you can tell that they are connected. And I’m really happy of the amount of original work that I have in this project as well. It would have been nice for my print feature to work when you viewed my publication as an EPUB but unfortunately that was out of my control! I’m looking forward to taking these new skills that I learned for both print and digital publication into my future career as a designer!
