This module began with the first study task where we listed our strengths, improvements, and what we wanted to know. Looking back at this, particularly at the things I wanted to find out, I think I have achieved them in some ways. I wanted to know more about professionalism, contexts within illustration, more about my practice, and what illustration means to me and how this could inform where I go next. Professionalism was explored in PPP through having the opportunity to have visiting lecturers speak to us and discuss their practices and places within industry, as well as opportunities to present and carry out industry research. Context was also something I looked at, analyzing practitioners on my blog and extracting what it is I liked about their individual practices, for instance those with quite varied, multi-disciplinary approaches to their work. As for me and my own practice, I do think I’ve learned more about myself and what I like doing. The presentation especially has been a good exercise for me, as I drew together my experiences, things that inspire and influence me, as well as other contextual references and thoughts that sum up my progress this year as well as where my attitudes towards illustration stand at this point in time. I also learned that professionalism is something I struggle with, not in terms of being organized, on time, etc. But my preconceptions of ‘professionalism’ are very commercial, and only follow a certain route. I learned that it is possible for me to redefine professionalism for myself, and that there is not only one way to achieve this. I will need to continue to explore potential avenues and contexts in which my work could fit, that doesn’t mean I would have to sacrifice my tone of voice and what I’m interested in. A success of this module for me has been my approach to blogging. I think I have successfully documented a lot of relevant content – from tasks, presentations, notes, lectures, and thoughts. My blog for this module has been a place where I think about what’s going on in front of me, what’s going on in the world of visual culture, as well as my thoughts and values on illustration as a whole. Another success has been organization, I feel that my reasoning for selecting my contact (SB2), as well as the content of our group pitch (SB3) were appropriate to my own practice, and well researched. These things weren’t last minute decisions, I thought of how they would relate to what I’m doing and how they would benefit me. However I think a problem I faced was to do with contacting a professional. Although my choice of contact was well-considered, research, and thought out, I didn’t get the response as I had hoped. As well as that, I think I was a bit too hesitant in reaching out and contacting them, whereas had I been more confident, I could have contacted a handful of relevant industry professionals and atleast gotten one response from them. But I do think in despite of that, this exercise has made me a little more confident about contacting people, so I think it would be less daunting in future. Something I would like to take forward to level 6 is being more willing to engage with opportunities available to me, and not letting a lack of confidence prevent this. This means taking on more projects outside of studio briefs, as well as having the confidence to put my work out in the world and see how this could be achieved. I would like to look into and devise ways in which I can exist as a creative beyond level 6, whether this is as an individual or part of a larger group. Who will I need to keep in contact with? What facilities are available to

me? Are there venues, events, and schemes that would be supporting of any future creative endeavors? These are all things I must think about next year as the real world comes closer. Also, continuing to expand on my understanding of professionalism will be essential for next year, as that very much is at the forefront of level 6. Whilst also remembering that professionalism doesn’t have to be boring or standardized, and it isn’t about doing a live brief just because it’s a live brief. It’s important that I stay true to my own values, about what level of commercialism is right for me, and that I generate work and select projects that align with my own creative interests and professional ambitions.
