End of Module Student Evaluation BA (Hons) Illustration Module Code: OUIL504 Illustration 1: Production & Presentation Name: Bronte Hall Student ID: 259958 Please identify where the evidence for each of the learning outcomes is within your submission and how well you feel you have met the learning outcomes. Please also grade yourself in relation to the learning outcomes using terms: > poor, satisfactory, good, very good, excellent (Note- This is so that the team have an understanding of how well you feel you have done. It is not an indication of the actual grade you may receive.) Learning Outcome
Evidenced where? Blog, Visual Journal, Roughs, Final Illustrations, Stings, storyboards, development sheets etc. (No more than 75 words)
5A5: Demonstrate an informed understanding of issues relating to image, media, format and context through the delivery of solutions to identified visual problems. (Knowledge & Understanding - Critical Awareness)
Adhering to the purpose and contexts of each brief’s format, as well as any technical aspects such Good as size dimensions and colour restrictions.
5A6: Understand the potential and limitations of a range of processes, technologies and techniques involved in the development and production of work for print and screen based delivery. (Knowledge & Understanding Research)
Evidenced through workshops and software support sessions where I gained an understanding of print and digital processes. The blog has been where I have evaluated the strengths and/or weaknesses of these approaches and selected what I thought worked best.
5B4: Analyse and critically evaluate primary/secondary source material to inform the development and contextualisation of ideas, concepts and products through individual responses to set briefs. (Cognitive Skills - Problem Analysis, Problem Solving)
Shown through the contextual research carried out in response to my chosen author. From secondary research including books, interviews, films, and the internet, to primary research such as the work carried out in my visual journal – turning the contextual into images. Analysing the work of existing practitioners has also been a form of research which has helped me to create the physical outcomes for this module (e.g. looking at print makers, zines and books…)
Your grade Using words: > poor, satisfactory, good, very good, excellent
Good
Good
5C4: Select, manipulate and apply appropriate media, processes and technologies in the development, production and presentation of ideas, concepts and products. (Practical Skills - Practical and Conceptual Development)
Ideas have been tested and developed in a number of ways – for example, through drawings and media tests in the visual journal, to test printing in the print room, to photoshop testing. These have been presented either in the form of sketchbooks, or as Very good issuu documents on the blog.
5C5: Identify, evaluate and apply practical/technical processes, materials and media in order to produce technically competent and conceptually appropriate outcomes. (Practical Skills - Visual Quality and Technical Competence)
Taking my physical prints into digital software was an instance of me applying both practical and technical processes to my work. InDesign an After Effects were where the images came together into more finalised products. As for the publication, this was realised in the digital print room, using the printers as well as folding, cropping, and handbinding the finished publication.
5D4: Demonstrate the ability to communicate the development and resolution of ideas through appropriate visual and written presentation of work. (Key Transferable Skills Presentation and Evaluation)
The majority of the communication of my ideas and their development occurred on my blog, where I could evaluate and present pages of physical work in the concise format of issuu presentations. As well as that, notes in my sketchbook, peer reviews, and Very good evaluative posts also evidence this discussion between me, my work, and sometimes my peers or tutors.
Very good
Summative Evaluation (See Evaluation Guidance on next page for more information) You are required to write a 750 word Summative Evaluation of this module. Please type up your Summative Evaluation in the box below. Make a PDF of the document, print out a copy to submit with your portfolio of work and post the PDF as your final post on your OUIL504 blog. This project began with gathering a breadth of research which was related to a chosen author. I really enjoyed this part, reading books, watching interviews, films, sifting through quotes and other written material to grapple with new information and, consequently, build up my perception of this person and their work. Considering I knew nothing about Burroughs at the start of this, I think I have learned a lot as I now have an understanding of him. This module allowed lots of skills and learning to be developed; from the contextual and historical knowledge of the author, to getting to grips with new processes and techniques. I was introduced to new printing methods and was able to spend time testing and seeing the potential or failures of each method. I think that I can now confidently use the print room, knowing what to do, and how to set up and clear away properly. I have also gained a basic understanding of how to use after effects, as well as being reintroduced to InDesign for the assembly of my book. This was particularly valuable because I would like to create more publications in the future, and InDesign will aid me in this. Although I don’t think after effects is my strongest skill, at least I know the basics of the program now having created my moving image. I don’t want to completely ignore the possibilities of moving image, however I think my problem was that I had a very handmade idea in mind for my animation and I struggled to recreate this digitally. Maybe approaching animation in a more analogue way could be something to explore in future.
Using my blog as a place to think and compile my work in a succinct way is really useful for me. I think of it not only as an organizational tool, keeping track of what I’ve done, but also as an evaluative platform where I can think about the possibilities of where a project could go next. It is also helpful to look back on past work and see what progress has been made at times when I get stuck. My successes within this module have been my research and my approach to the information I have collated. For me, the contextual part from the author research gave me a foundation for my ideas. From here I was able to come up with themes and tonal qualities that not only went on to inform the content of my work, but its aesthetic. Monotype was an integral part of my illustrations during the module. It was a process that really suited the way I have been working; providing a naïve, weird visual quality which is something I both appreciate and tried to achieve for myself. Another plus of monotype is that I could make a great deal of prints in a short time, and perfection was very much out of the equation due to the element of chance involved with this technique. Additionally, the main part of monotype is line which is well-suited to me as I enjoy drawing. I think the pace at which I’ve been working has meant that I have been able to stay on track with study tasks and meet deadlines with relative ease. I have also spent more time in the studio, taking advantage of the space as well as other resources after timetabled sessions. Separating work from where I live has benefitted me and ended up shaping my working habits too. One of the biggest problems I faced in this module was after effects. I can struggle when something is very technical, so I do feel that my outcome for Moving Pictures is inadequate. But I’m glad that I was able to attempt using the software as it pushed me out of my comfort zone. Another conflict I have experienced during this module is naivety vs. crafting. An expressive, naïve aesthetic is something I really admire and want to strive for, but is also something I’m hesitant about at times. I think I need to improve my confidence in approaching my work and ideas in a lo-fi way, and not worry about it seeming poorly crafted. Print quality and other finishes can enhance the level of crafting, so I mustn’t think that ‘crafting’ is synonymous with accuracy or representational drawing. A further part of my work that I could improve is my level of experimentation, as I think I rely on line and simple drawing tools too much. The next module may be a chance for me to embrace a wider range of materials, to create something that differs from my go-to image making methods. When thinking about future projects, I want to take forward the pace at which I have been working as I feel I have managed to complete the work without the added stress of running out of time, which I try to avoid. I would also like to take forward my approach to research and idea generation, because when immersed in a subject or context I am able to create a lot of ideas and concepts, which usually provides my outcomes with a bit of depth and context. Lastly, I would like to continue trying, testing, and experimenting which I have tried to maintain throughout this module. I think it is important that during the initial stages of a project I keep this playful approach to sketchbook work and development.
