End of Module Student Evaluation BA (Hons) Illustration Module Code: OUIL505 Illustration 2: Applied Illustration Name: Bronte Hall Student ID: 259958 Please identify where the evidence for each of the learning outcomes is within your submission and how well you feel you have met the learning outcomes. Please also grade yourself in relation to the learning outcomes using terms: poor, satisfactory, good, very good, excellent (Note- This is so that the team have an understanding of how well you feel you have done. It is not an indication of the actual grade you may receive.) Learning Outcome
Evidenced where? Blog, Visual Journal, Roughs,Final Illustrations, Stings, storyboards, development sheets etc. (No more than 75 words)
5A7:Demonstrate an informed understanding of issues relating to media, communication, audience and context through the delivery of solutions to brief led problems or clearly identified creative concerns.(Knowledge & Understanding - Critical Awareness)
Shown through both industry research, where professional areas of the discipline were identified, as well as visual research where I looked at relevant practitioners and art movements to further my project both conceptually and visually.
5A8:Understand the potential and limitations of technologies and processes used in the production of illustration for 2d, 3d and/or 4d distribution.(Knowledge & Understanding Research)
Evidenced in the visual journal as well as developmental work such as test prints and media experimentation, evaluated on the blog
5B5:Analyse and critically evaluate the impact of social, cultural, technological and/or ethical concerns on the development of solutions to problems relevant to individual creative concerns. Cognitive Skills - Problem Analysis, Problem Solving)
This can be found on the blog, in the proposal, as well as the project report where social and cultural references and concerns are discussed
5C6: Explore and apply a range of appropriate practical and conceptual approaches to self-determined ideas, concepts, solutions/proposals in
Evident in the sketchbook where multiple concepts and roughs were explored, as well as the proposal which was rewritten as the project evolved and changed. Analysis of this can also be found on the blog.

response to own identified intentions and relevant practices. (Practical Skills Practical and Conceptual Development) 5C7:Produce technically competent and conceptually appropriate outcomes to identified problems through the selection and application of visual skills.(Practical Skills - Visual Quality and Technical Competence)
This will be seen through my finished outcomes, as well as the digital mockups where I had to identify which applications were appropriate, as well as thinking about the best way to create them digitally.
5D5:Demonstrate the ability to plan and carry out a period of increasingly self-directed study through the appropriate use of workshop areas, studio activities and project management skills.(Key Transferable Skills - Presentation and Evaluation)
Presentation skills can be found in both the project report, and the design boards – as well as the mockups where outcomes are presented in a professional way. The blog shows the evaluation of work, and the use of my diary helped me to plan and keep track of tasks required.

Summative Evaluation(See Evaluation Guidance on next page for more information) You are required to write a 750 word Summative Evaluation of this module. Please type up your Summative Evaluation in the box below. Make a PDF of the document, print out a copy to submit with your portfolio of work. Also please cut and paste the text from this box into the final page(s) of your OUIL505 Project Report. Looking at where my project for this module started and ended is quite interesting to me, as it took a complete turn from my original starting points. Although this progression flows and makes sense (going from doing research on hoarding, to creating a campaign for cultural institutions), I didn’t expect such a change to take place however I do feel that my project eventually became more well-rounded and purposeful in the end. A part of this module that was fairly new to me was essentially writing my own project brief. I think this is a very useful skill to have exercised, and something I will most likely benefit from in level 6 and beyond too. Mapping out a project proposal and revising it as the project moved along was really helpful for me – as I could see where I was at different stages of the module; what I was thinking, what I wanted to produce, and reshaping the proposal meant I could re-evaluate aspects of the project and make them better if necessary. Another new skill I learned was how to create digital mockups of my work, envisioning them as finished products and applications. I found this to be very beneficial, having only seen my work as flat images up until this point. Not only did I learn how to actually create these digital mockups, but I had to go through the process of choosing which were most appropriate to my project. This selection process made me take time to think about the purpose of my work, and which contexts would be best suited to my project. This added a whole new sense of professionalism to the images I had created, and opened up possibilities for how illustrations can be utilized in future. It also made me think about how illustration interacts with our everyday
lives and our environment, which is something I would like to explore further and possibly integrate with my own practice. As with other projects, the part I really like is the initial sketching and making drawings. Media experimentation and process was a big part of what I did during 505 despite it not being at the centre of this module. I took the principles of experimentation that I enjoyed in the previous module and tried to create work in the same way, which I feel led to outcomes that formed more organically and that have visual and tonal qualities that I wanted to achieve (humour, playfulness). I found that the visual research I did throughout the project to be really enjoyable and inspiring, for instance looking at Polish poster art and a number of practitioners that are process-led who still manage to produce sophisticated outcomes that have a lot of personality. Not only was I drawn to the type of work they create, but how they make it, and what they make it for. However in terms of improvements, I do think maybe I could have been more ambitious with the work I created. Although I produced what I set out to in my proposal, it would have been nice to see pieces of work that went that little bit further – such as physical examples of applications, or even moving image. When it comes to Level 6 I would like to try and be more ambitious with my work, so I must find the balance between setting realistic goals and being aware of the time frame I’m working within. I also struggled with keeping the momentum with my project at times. This occurred at the stage where I was slowly changing my project into what it is now. In order to prevent this in future, it’s important that I set out a clearly defined proposal of work for myself very early on in the project, to stop there being too much room for uncertainty. Something I need to take forward to future projects is to go with my gut feeling more. During 505 there were a lot of moments where small decisions went on much longer than necessary because I was unsure or unhappy with my work. Although it’s easier said than done, I think I need to be more decisive and confident in the type of work I make. Not only could this save me time, but being more definite could stop any doubts from slowing a project down. Evaluation Guidance This should be a reflective summary of your experience across the module. -
How did it go? Where did your journey start, where did it end? I knew very little at the start of this module. At the end of the module I feel that…
-
What learning took place? What was useful to you? Be specific. New skills? New methods? New processes or approaches? Did you use the blog to reflect on your project development?
-
What went well and why? What did you enjoy? What were you happy with as an outcome? Be critical and analytical. Why did you enjoy it? Perhaps identify particular sessions? This could be ideas, solutions to problems, studentship or research. How well did you use the studio? Did you invest enough time in the development and testing of your outcomes?
-
What could you have done better? What were the problems you faced? What did you do to try to overcome them? This could be in reference to studentship, organization or blogging as much as studio practice.
-
How can you apply what you have learned here for future modules and projects? Application and future thinking. Things you would do differently next time? What useful methods, processes and ideas will you take forward into the next module?
You may also want to consider:
Self-questioning: How did your thoughts and opinions change as you progressed through the module? Feedback: What other people (tutors and peers) thought of work and how you responded to that feedback? Research: Did you use contextual research to inform your ideas, ways of thinking or understanding of the challenges set. This may include further research of your subject matter, slides from the presentations or use of the library.
