Looking at where my project for this module started and ended is quite interesting to me, as it took a complete turn from my original starting points. Although this progression flows and makes sense (going from doing research on hoarding, to creating a campaign for cultural institutions), I didn’t expect such a change to take place however I do feel that my project eventually became more well-rounded and purposeful in the end. A part of this module that was fairly new to me was essentially writing my own project brief. I think this is a very useful skill to have exercised, and something I will most likely benefit from in level 6 and beyond too. Mapping out a project proposal and revising it as the project moved along was really helpful for me – as I could see where I was at different stages of the module; what I was thinking, what I wanted to produce, and reshaping the proposal meant I could re-evaluate aspects of the project and make them better if necessary. Another new skill I learned was how to create digital mockups of my work, envisioning them as finished products and applications. I found this to be very beneficial, having only seen my work as flat images up until this point. Not only did I learn how to actually create these digital mockups, but I had to go through the process of choosing which were most appropriate to my project. This selection process made me take time to think about the purpose of my work, and which contexts would be best suited to my project. This added a whole new sense of professionalism to the images I had created, and opened up possibilities for how illustrations can be utilized in future. It also made me think about how illustration interacts with our everyday
lives and our environment, which is something I would like to explore further and possibly integrate with my own practice. As with other projects, the part I really like is the initial sketching and making drawings. Media experimentation and process was a big part of what I did during 505 despite it not being at the centre of this module. I took the principles of experimentation that I enjoyed in the previous module and tried to create work in the same way, which I feel led to outcomes that formed more organically and that have visual and tonal qualities that I wanted to achieve (humour, playfulness). I found that the visual research I did throughout the project to be really enjoyable and inspiring, for instance looking at Polish poster art and a number of practitioners that are process-led who still manage to produce sophisticated outcomes that have a lot of personality. Not only was I drawn to the type of work they create, but how they make it, and what they make it for. However in terms of improvements, I do think maybe I could have been more ambitious with the work I created. Although I produced what I set out to in my proposal, it would have been nice to see pieces of work that went that little bit further – such as physical examples of applications, or even moving image. When it comes to Level 6 I would like to try and be more ambitious with my work, so I must find the balance between setting realistic goals and being aware of the time frame I’m working within. I also struggled with keeping the momentum with my project at times. This occurred at the stage where I was slowly changing my project into what it is now. In order to prevent this in future, it’s important that I set out a clearly defined proposal of work for myself very early on in the project, to stop there being too much room for uncertainty. Something I need to take forward to future projects is to go with my gut feeling more. During 505 there were a lot of moments where small decisions went on much longer than necessary because I was unsure or unhappy with my work. Although it’s easier said than done, I think I need to be more decisive and confident in the type of work I make. Not only could this save me time, but being more definite could stop any doubts from slowing a project down.
