STUDIO BRIEF 1: Project Proposal

Project Rationale What do you intend to do and why? I intend to produce 6 illustrated posters to act as the basis of a visually-driven public campaign, encouraging audiences of all ages to visit museums, libraries, and galleries to engage with and discover the collections they have on offer. Initially looking at personal collections and hoarding, this research then expanded into the questions of why we keep things, and what makes an object valuable. ‘The Keeper’ was a past exhibition at The New Museum, NY, which aimed to explore these questions. The exhibition also blurred the line between personal collections of hobbyists and obsessives, and institutional collections – putting objects typically associated with museums alongside an amateur hobbyists collection of model houses for example. The posters I create will hopefully carry the message of being inquisitive, finding out, exploring, and discovering the value which these public institutions can hold, hopefully making them seem more approachable and accessible to all. Not only do galleries, museums, and libraries possesses educational value, they also have historical and often social value too. The visual research I have carried out reflects practitioners and concepts I’m interested in – the idea of curation, as well as the social responsibility that these places have. Namely the Dutch designer Willem Sandberg, and Polish poster artist Henryk Tomaszewski have been inspiring to me. Not only do each of their works approach the creation of posters in quite experimental ways, but they also reimagine posters as pieces of art, not just pieces of information. They play with the balance between visuals and communication.

THEMES / SUBJECTS What Themes/Subjects will form the content of your work for this module? This should include theoretical and non-creative based content and concerns. This section should identify your consideration of the social, cultural, ethical and creative concerns of contemporary Illustration practice. GENERAL THEMES:

• Institutional collections • Encouraging the public to visit these places • Accessibility • Learning, exploring, finding PRACTICAL & CONCEPTUAL APPLICATION What areas of Illustration do you intend to investigate in relation to the practical and conceptual, production/ distribution of work in response to selected briefs?

SPECIFIC DISCIPLINARY AREA: Public campaign AUDIENCE/CONTEXTS: • People of all ages • To be distributed in public spaces, as well as the institutional locations mentioned above • Posters • Print-based media (banners, leaftlets, pamphlets) • Web and digital PRODUCTION/DISTRIBUTION METHODS: • Illustrations – mix of traditional and digital methods. • Digital mockups of the contexts/applications to objects/products/spaces CONTEXTUAL REFERENCES Identify areas of professional/creative practices that will inform the contextualization of the work that you produce. This should include specific illustrators, studios, practitioners and products as well as broader creative disciplines and methods of Production /Distribution. ILLUSTRATORS / DESIGNERS / STUDIOS: • Henryk Tomaszewski • Jan Lenica • Marion Deuchars • Willem Sandberg • Abram Games CREATIVE SKILLS What practical skills do you intend to further develop and apply during your project? What do you intend to use the skills for? Consider extending the use of skills that you already have in order to deliver work of a higher standard as well as identifying new skills that you will need to develop.

• Developing the skill of interpreting information, making sure the visual responses are reflective of the contextual research. • Digitally applying my illustrative work to different formats and contexts (e.g. mockups of advertisements in real spaces, etc) • To hopefully find a balance in my finished outcomes between being experimental with media, and having a level of professionalism – looking suitable within their respective contextual applications. KEY TEXTS List a selected number of books, articles and texts that are central to your proposed area of practice. These should include a combination of design and non-practice based books, theoretical texts as well as visual publications. You should include a list of relevant websites.
