Coaching Staff Marcus Ziemer

Head Coach (17th season)

Marcus Ziemer returns for his 17th season as head coach of the Sonoma State Men’s Soccer team this fall. The 2006 season brought more success to the storied SSU men’s soccer program. Led by All-Americans Brett Cook and Andrew Bailey, the Seawolves were 14-6-1 overall and an impressive 13-2-1 in the CCAA. The No. 1 seed in the CCAA Tournament, the Seawolves were upset by nemesis CSU Dominguez Hills and subsequently missed out on a second straight trip to the NCAA Tournament. This snubbing has left Ziemer and the Seawolves hungry for the start of the ‘07 season.

2002 National Coach of the Year

The winningest coach in SSU soccer history, Ziemer has been named conference coach of the year on five occasions and in 2002, he was named regional and national coach of the year after leading the Seawolves to the NCAA Division II national championship.

5-time Conference Coach of the Year (‘91, ‘93, ‘97, ‘02, ‘06)

A two-time all-conference performer for Sonoma State in the 1980’s, Ziemer has compiled a 207-102-28 record over the past 16 years.

2002 National Champions

Ziemer began his coaching career in 1989, assisting head coach Peter Reynaud with the SSU men’s squad. In 1991, after Reynaud left to concentrate on the women’s team, Ziemer was promoted to head coach and results came immediately. Ziemer led his squad to the NCAA championship game and he was named Northern California Athletic Conference Coach of the Year for his efforts.

In 1988, Ziemer spent three weeks in England earning an English Football International Preliminary Badge. He earned his USSF “A” license the following year. A fixture in local soccer circles, Ziemer and his three brothers (Andrew, Benjamin, Christopher -- all former SSU players) have run the Ziemer Brothers Soccer Camps for over 20 years, educating thousands of youth soccer players.

Ziemer lives in Glen Ellen with his wife Trish (Gretton), a member of SSU’s 1990 women’s soccer national championship team. They have three children, Thomas, Taylor, and Tera.

2007 Season Preview Shawn Percell Assistant Coach

Former Cardinal Newman High and Santa Clara University star Shawn Percell joins the Sonoma State men’s soccer coaching staff for 2007. Percell comes to the Seawolves from Seattle University, where he was an assistant on the women’s soccer team. Percell enjoyed a fantastic high school career, first at Piner High School, then at Cardinal Newman in Santa Rosa. The Redwood Empire and North Bay League Player of the Year as a senior, Percell led his 1995 team to an NCS Championship. He went on to play at Santa Clara University, where he appeared in two NCAA Division I Final Fours (1999 and 2000). In 1999, he was named the Offensive Most Valuable Player of the College Cup. Percell played professionally for a year in Belize before coming back to the States and joining the Seattle Sounders of the United Soccer League’s First Division. He played a total of three seasons with the Sounders before joining the coaching staff of the women’s team, eventually becoming the head coach.

Benjamin Ziemer Assistant Coach

Benjamin Ziemer, head coach Marcus’ younger brother, returns for his third season on the Seawolf staff. Ziemer attended Sonoma State in 1990 and 1991 and ranks fourth in school history with 20 assists. His 11 assists in the 1991 season helped lead SSU to the NCAA Division II National Championship game.

Matt Bernard Assistant Coach

Former SSU All-American Matt Bernard begins his second season on the coaching staff. A three-year starter for the Seawolves (2001-03), Bernard led SSU to the 2002 National Championship as the team’s starting goalkeeper. That season, he was named First Team All-CCAA, All-West Region, and Third Team AllAmerican. He was also an AllConference and All-Region pick in 2003. Bernard is fourth in school history with 15 shutouts and 203 saves.

2007 Season Preview A year removed from a snubbing by the NCAA, the Seawolves are ready to prove they belong in the upper echelon of NCAA Division II Men’s Soccer. Sonoma State went 14-6-2 last year, but a double overtime CCAA Tournament loss to Cal State Dominguez Hills bumped the Seawolves from No. 2 in the region to No. 5. With only the top four teams advancing to the regionals, it left SSU on the outside looking in. The Seawolves believe they have the talent to make last year’s snubbing look like a distant memory. With 19 letter winners returning including All-American Andrew Bailey and All-Region picks Nathan Medina and Eric Larson, most soccer observers agree. In fact, the Seawolves were picked to win the CCAA championship and they were a unanimous selection to win their fourth straight CCAA North crown. Bailey should again provide much of the scoring punch in 2007. The CCAA and Daktronics West Region Player of the Year, Bailey scored 13 goals last season. He’ll have help up from from Ross Middlemiss, Mike Asaro, Mark Wiedeman, Nathan Medina, Mike Travis, and Eric Lafon. Medina was a Second Team All-CCAA pick last year, one season removed from a 14-goal freshman campaign in ‘05. The midfield is led by returning seniors Eric Larson, Steven Browne, and David Seidel. The trio has developed together over the last five years and is anxious to make their senior season one to remember. The defense lost All-American Brett Cook, but the cupboard is far from empty. Scott Preckwinkle, Cody Ericson, Doug Carr, and Stuart Gallant lead an impressive unit that also features Sac State transfer Jack Jones. _ Brook Johnson will return for his first full season as a starter after splitting time with Clark Rupp in 2006. Johnson was solid in the goal and his development will be a key to the success of the Seawolves. Coach Ziemer has also been very impressed with an outstanding freshman group that includes Brandon De la Cruz, Ryan Hall, David Holleran and goalkeepers Taylor Jones and Juan Sosa. The Seawolves will again play one of the tougher schedules in the region. All four NCAA regional teams from last year (Seattle Pacific, Seattle University, Cal State L.A. and Cal State Dominguez Hills) are on the slate. Plus, every team in the North will be sure to have the SSU game circled. _ _

Tim Maycock Assistant Coach

Tim Maycock returns for his second season on the coaching staff after a stellar four-year playing career. A freshman on SSU’s 2002 National Championship team, Maycock had two goals in the postseason and a pair of assists in the championship game. Maycock finished his career 10th in school history with 18 goals.

Seawolf Field Seawolf Field is the on-campus home of the Sonoma State men’s and women’s soccer teams. Over the years, the field has played host to many conference and NCAA tournament games featuring both prestiguous Sonoma State soccer programs. Nestled next to a grove of redwood trees, right in the middle of campus, Seawolf Field is an excellent venue for the campus community and the entire area to watch top notch NCAA soccer action. The Seawolves have received strong support from the community, ranking among the top in the nation in terms of Division II attendance. In 2003, the year after the SSU men’s soccer team captured the national title, they led the nation attendance, averaging 515 fans per game. The largest crowd in school history, 1,287 fans, was present on November 24, 2002 to support the Seawolves in their 3-0 NCAA Quarterfinal win over Midwestern State. The win sent SSU on to the National Final Four and set off a frenzied on-field celebration.

Conference/Opponent Information The California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) has been one of the nation’s most successful intercollegiate athletic conferences since its establishment in December 1938. The 11-member league is home to some of the nation’s finest NCAA Division II athletic programs in Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cal State L.A., Cal State San Bernardino, Cal State Stanislaus, Chico State, UC San Diego, San Francisco State and Sonoma State. Additionally, California State University, Monterey Bay has begun its provisional status as a CCAA member. In 2006, Humboldt State departed from the Great Northwest Athletic Conference and joined the CCAA These institutions compete in seven women’s and six men’s CCAA-sponsored sports. Fall sports include men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer and women’s volleyball. Men’s and women’s basketball are contested in the winter, and women’s tennis, men’s golf, men’s and women’s outdoor track & field, softball and baseball comprise spring competition.

CCAA members have won 145 NCAA Championships (98 men, 47 women) which is far and away the most of any Division II conference. The CCAA has undergone several changes in conference membership since charter members UC Santa Barbara, Fresno State, San Diego State and San Jose State came together to form the league in 1938. Over the past 68 years, a number of institutions have been members of the CCAA, including Cal State Northridge, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Chapman, Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach State, Pacific, Pepperdine, UC Riverside, UC Davis and Grand Canyon University. Lori Maycock Scholarship Fund On July 19, 2002, upon waking up from surgery Lori Maycock was told she had stage III ovarian cancer. On the weekend of December 6, 2002, Lori was allowed to take a break from her a grueling chemotherapy clinical trial to travel to Virginia Beach, Virginia to watch the Sonoma State Men’s Soccer Team compete for the NCAA Division II National Championship. After a victory in the semi-finals on Friday, Lori and her husband Steve watched SSU take the championship game 4-3, where their freshman son, Tim, had two key assists. Those two events, the National Championship and Lori’s diagnosis, marked the very high and low points of 2002 for the entire Maycock Family. Lori’s treatments, in some form or another, continued over the next four years. During those four years of treatment, both Steve and Lori attended just about every SSU game; spring, league, post-season, home and away; those games provided Lori a “cancer free zone”. Lori always appreciated the team, the players, their values, work ethics and sense of team. Values and work ethic are things Lori always held dear. On July 31, 2006, 2-days after her 48th birthday, Lori passed away from her cancer. To celebrate Lori’s life and to remember her always, the family has established an endowed scholarship at Sonoma State University to benefit the Sonoma State Men’s Soccer Program. Lori would be pleased with this remembrance. This scholarship represents the only endowed scholarship for the SSU Men’s Program. The Maycock Family and Coach Marcus Ziemer hope to see this fund grow annually for the benefit of present and future teams and to secure the legacy of Lori. Please consider a donation, over and above any annual donation that you are presently making, to help perpetuate the memory of Lori and to benefit the SSU Men’s Soccer Program. The Maycock Family will continue to donate an additional 10% in matching funds, up to $100,000 in donations from all friends, family and alumni of the SSU Men’s Soccer Program. IMPORTANT INFORMATION 1. The checks should be payable to “Sonoma State Academic Foundation” with the memo line of the check to read “Lori Maycock Scholarship Fund”, this is important to assure you check is credited to the right fund. 2. Checks should be forwarded to: SSU Men’s Soccer Attn: Marcus Ziemer 1801 E. Cotati Avenue Rohnert Park, CA 94928 3. The Sonoma State University Tax I.D. # is 99-0157509
