In 1998, he led his team to what was then the most wins in Division II women’s soccer history with a 22-2-1 mark. That ‘98 squad won a school-record 20 games in a row and had a 14-0-0 record in conference play before reaching the NCAA Championship game for the third time in nine years. For his leadership role, Oberkirch was named NSCAA National Coach of the Year in addition to being selected as NSCAA West Region and CCAA Coach of the Year. In 1995 and 1997, Oberkirch led his team the the Northern California Athletic Conference title. The ‘95 team was ranked #2 in the country after posting a 17-2 mark in addition to a perfect 10-0 slate in conference play. Coach Oberkirch joined the Sonoma State staff in 1990, the year the women’s soccer team brought home the school’s first-ever NCAA National Championship. As SSU’s top assistant coach from 1990-94 under Peter Reynaud, Oberkirch was an important part of the team’s incredible success. The teams won five consecutive NCAC titles and made the NCAA playoffs five years in a row. In 1995, Oberkirch was named the third head coach in the program’s history. Prior to coming to Sonoma State, Oberkirch was head coach of the boys soccer team at Montgomery High School in Santa Rosa from 1987-89. In 1988, his team won the North Bay League Championship and in each of his three seasons, his team made the CIF North Coach Section playoffs. On the club level, Oberkirch has coached with the Santa Rosa United Soccer Club.

Q&A with Head Coach Luke Oberkirch
After advancing to the CCAA Tournament with a 10-3-3 conference record in ‘06, what is the team’s attitude entering the season? L.O.: “I think the team attitude is very good. The returning players have brought a focused, hard working attitude to training camp and they are hungry to make the playoffs again.” How does the CCAA shape up in 2007? L.O.: “The CCAA is so tough that I expect it to be even more competitive than previous years. However, UC San Diego is still the best team and everyone is looking up at them.” With so many seniors on last year’s team, what are some of the challenges this young team will need to confront early in the 2007 campaign? L.O.: “The biggest challenge this team year’s team faces with all the new players is getting them to understand that every game means the same. Every game is intense. Team chemistry on the field will be big challenge as well.” Which newcomers do you expect to step in and make a difference in 2007? L.O.: “I think Ali Cheadle has shown that she can do some good things in the attack. Courtney Grixti has looked good in goal. Allison Kern is very fast and will add to the attack. There are many more freshman looking good too!” What are some characteristics you have already seen in this year’s team from spring and summer training? L.O.: “I think this group is working very well together and is looking like it has the desire to succeed.” What are your expectations and goals for 2007? L.O.: “The goal is to make the CCAA playoffs and the NCAA playoffs.”

DEENA SCHNEIDER
HALL OF FAME CLASS OF 2008 Deena Schneider was one of the best in a long line of SSU women’s soccer All-Americans. A defensive midfielder, Schneider’s value to the program goes way beyond the stats she put up. An All-American in 1995, Schneider was a four-year performer for SSU and a member of four NCAC championship teams. A four-time All-Conference selection, she was named a GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-District selection in ‘95 when she helped lead SSU to the NCAA Final Four. Following her playing career, Schneider spent several seasons as an assistant on the SSU women’s soccer team and was an integral part of the 1998 national runner-up squad.

Deena will be inducted into the SSU Athletics Hall of Fame on September 22, 2007. Allison Gibson All-American: 1992, 1993

Series Histories 1990 NCAA DIVISION II NATIONAL CHAMPIONS
Led by head coach Peter Reynaud and star players Tami Bradley, Karen Beckner, Julie Cochran, Stacy Ball, and Kim Abbott, the 1990 women’s soccer team won the first NCAA championship in Sonoma State history. The ‘90 team lost their first two games of the year before rolling off seven wins in their next nine games. Starting in early October, SSU really found their stride, winning the final six regular season games of the year. In the first round of the NCAA playoffs, SSU beat Barry University in penalty kicks. The championship game was less dramatic as Sonoma State rolled to a 3-0 win over Keene State. Though SSU would remain a national power throughout the ‘90s with seven conference titles and two more appearances in the national championship game, the 1990 team will always be remembered as SSU’s first-ever national champion. The squad was inducted into SSU’s athletics hall of fame in 2001.

Seawolf Field Seawolf Field is the on-campus home of the Sonoma State men’s and women’s soccer teams. Over the years, the field has played host to many conference and NCAA tournament games featuring both prestiguous Sonoma State soccer programs. Nestled next to a grove of redwood trees, right in the middle of campus, Seawolf Field is an excellent venue for the campus community and the entire area to watch top notch NCAA soccer action. Over the years, community support for Sonoma State soccer has been fantastic. The Seawolves are annually ranked among the top NCAA Division II schools in the nation in home attendance. Additionally, SSU led the entire nation in attendance in 1998 and 2000. The largest crowd in SSU women’s soccer history was present on November 22, 1998 when 1,200 fans helped send Sonoma State to the NCAA Final Four with a 4-1 win over Mesa State. Three of the top six attendance figures in school history occurred in 1998.

Conference/Opponent Information The California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) has been one of the nation’s most successful intercollegiate athletic conferences since its establishment in December 1938. The 11-member league is home to some of the nation’s finest NCAA Division II athletic programs in Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cal State L.A., Cal State San Bernardino, Cal State Stanislaus, Chico State, UC San Diego, San Francisco State and Sonoma State. Additionally, California State University, Monterey Bay has begun its provisional status as a CCAA member. In 2006, Humboldt State departed from the Great Northwest Athletic Conference and joined the CCAA These institutions compete in seven women’s and six men’s CCAA-sponsored sports. Fall sports include men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer and women’s volleyball. Men’s and women’s basketball are contested in the winter, and women’s tennis, men’s golf, men’s and women’s outdoor track & field, softball and baseball comprise spring competition.
CCAA members have won 145 NCAA Championships (98 men, 47 women) which is far and away the most of any Division II conference. The CCAA has undergone several changes in conference membership since charter members UC Santa Barbara, Fresno State, San Diego State and San Jose State came together to form the league in 1938. Over the past 68 years, a number of institutions have been members of the CCAA, including Cal State Northridge, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Chapman, Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach State, Pacific, Pepperdine, UC Riverside, UC Davis and Grand Canyon University.
