SONOMA STATE UNIVERSITY MEN’S SOCCER O 2007 NCAA DIVISION II FAR WEST REGION CHAMPIONS
MARCUS ZIEMER HEAD COACHHEAD COACH Marcus Ziemer returns for his 18th season as head coach of the Sonoma State Men’s Soccer team this fall. Ziemer returns many all-conference and all-region performers from last season’s Far West region champion squad. He believes he has them primed for a run at a national title. In 2007, Ziemer’s Seawolves turned in an amazing season, highlighted by a school-record 17 game winning streak and the first perfect record in the conference in seven years. The Seawolves went 19-3-3 on their way to the regional championship and a final national ranking of No. 8. After a penalty kick win in the regional championship against CSU Dominguez Hills, the Seawolves’ luck in PKs ran out the next week in the NCAA Quarterfinal as they were edged by Midwestern State. For his efforts, Ziemer was named the CCAA Coach of the Year for the second straight year in 2007. It was the sixth conference coach of the year honor for Ziemer since taking the helm in 1991. He also added Far West Region Coach of the Year honors for the second time. Ziemer was named National Coach of the Year in 2002 after leading the Seawolves to their first national championship. A two-time all-conference performer for Sonoma State in the 1980’s, Ziemer has compiled a 226-10531 record over the past 16 years. His teams have gone 27-2-1 in CCAA play over the last two seasons (33-9-4 overall). Ziemer began his coaching career in 1989, assisting head coach Peter Reynaud with the SSU men’s squad. In 1991, after Reynaud left to concentrate on the women’s team, Ziemer was promoted to head coach and results came immediately. Ziemer led his squad to the NCAA championship game and he was named Northern California Athletic Conference Coach of the Year for his efforts. Under Ziemer, the Sonoma State men’s soccer team has won six conference titles and has a record of 169-56-15 in conference play. In 1988, Ziemer spent three weeks in England earning an English Football International Preliminary Badge. He earned his USSF “A” license the following year. A fixture in local soccer circles, Ziemer and his three brothers (Andrew, Benjamin, Christopher -- all former SSU players) have run the Ziemer Brothers Soccer Camps for over 20 years, educating thousands of youth soccer players. Ziemer lives in Glen Ellen with his wife Trish (Gretton), a member of SSU’s 1990 women’s soccer national championship team. They have three children, Thomas, Taylor, and Tera.

SHAWN PERCELL ASSISTANT COACH Former Cardinal Newman High and Santa Clara University star Shawn Percell joins the Sonoma State men’s soccer coaching staff for 2007. Percell comes to the Seawolves from Seattle University, where he was an assistant on the women’s soccer team. Percell enjoyed a fantastic high school career, first at Piner High School, then at Cardinal Newman in Santa Rosa. The Redwood Empire and North Bay League Player of the Year as a senior, Percell led his 1995 team to an NCS Championship. He went on to play at Santa Clara University, where he appeared in two NCAA Division I Final Fours (1999 and 2000). In 1999, he was named the Offensive Most Valuable Player of the College Cup. Percell played professionally for a year in Belize before coming back to the States and joining the Seattle Sounders of the United Soccer League’s First Division. He played a total of three seasons with the Sounders before joining the coaching staff of the women’s team, eventually becoming the head coach.
BENJAMIN ZIEMER
ASSISTANT COACH
Benjamin Ziemer, head coach Marcus’ younger brother, returns for his third season on the Seawolf staff. Ziemer attended Sonoma State in 1990 and 1991 and ranks fourth in school history with 20 assists. His 11 assists in the 1991 season helped lead SSU to the NCAA Division II National Championship game.
TIM MAYCOCK
ASSISTANT COACH
Tim Maycock is back for his second year as a member of the coaching staff, following a fouryear playing career for the Seawolves. A freshman on SSU’s 2002 national championship team, Maycock was an integral part of the team’s championship run, scoring two goals in the national quarterfinals and pitching in with an assist in the title game. Maycock closed out his career in 2005 with a total 18 goals and nine assists.

SONOMA STATE UNIVERSITY MEN’S SOCCER O 2007 NCAA DIVISION II FAR WEST REGION CHAMPIONS
2008 SEASON PREVIEW
Q&A WITH HEAD COACH MARCUS ZIEMER Last year’s team lost a heartbreaker in the NCAA quarterfinals on penalty kicks. Does that defeat linger and does it help drive the 2008 Seawolves? Ziemer: Yes, all of us think about that loss a lot. I wake up in the middle of the night and think “what if?” We spoke about it during our team goal setting sessions with our sports psychologist, Glenn Brassington, and we still feel bad for the seniors that ended their SSU careers with that loss. How does the CCAA shape up in 2008? Ziemer: It should be an interesting league this year with three new coaches (Chico State, Cal State Stanislaus, and UC San Diego). We are going in as the favorites and we’ve done very well in conference the last few years, but even if we win a lot of games and qualify for the CCAA Tournament, it is difficult to win it all. What newcomers do you expect to step in and make a difference in 2008? Ziemer: All of our newcomers are red-shirting, so our new players have been at SSU for a year already. We have several good ones that are going to battle for time and will make an impact off of the bench initially. Cory Taufer, Cam Vickers, Davide Furtado, Ebby Lombardi and Ben Langwith will all make significant contributions this year and in coming years as well. It’s customary for your freshmen to redshirt a season before making their debut. Talk a little about your reasoning for this. Ziemer: It is something that we have done since I became head coach. It began as a way to keep a player who was raw, but had some potential. It has now evolved to the point where we have players red-shirting who are good enough to make our squad. If we feel they can make an impact as a freshman then we don’t redshirt them. There are several reasons why this makes sense and is an easy sell: • We have a long history of success with our redshirt program and have even had several All-Americans who red-shirted. They sell the program, beginning on the recruiting trip. • Rather than using a year of eligibility for limited playing time as a 17 or 18 year old freshman, players have the chance to use that year as a dominating 21 or 22 year old senior. • We play a difficult style and system which is unfamiliar and a challenge to most players. Therefore, that extra year really helps them get adjusted and able to make the most of their four years. • In-state tuition is very reasonable, so the extra semester doesn’t cost as much as a private school. It’s financially feasible. • The year at school without the game and travel responsibility gives them a chance to settle in and form a firm academic foundation which leads to academic success. Two-time All-American, Two-time West Region Player of the Year. All-time leading goal scorer. Where does Andrew Bailey go from here? Ziemer: We expect Andrew Bailey to pick up where he left off. He had the best off-season he’s ever hard and he reported to camp healthy and fit. We have several players who can score goals, so all of the pressure doesn’t have to be on him. We can still win if he doesn’t score, but at the end of the season we expect him to have impressive stats again. What are some characteristics you’ve seen from this year’s team? Ziemer: We are very focused and driven. Coming up a little short last year has helped make us appreciate it a lot more. We have eight seniors starting so we are experienced and shouldn’t get rattled easily. We also have a great bunch of guys who really get along and enjoy each others company. It should be a fun year both on and off of the field. What are your expectations/goals for 2008? Ziemer: As a team we have broken the season goals down into steps, beginning with our Hawaii trip, sweeping the Pacific Northwest and out-of-conference games, winning the CCAA North Division, winning the CCAA Tournament, qualifying for the NCAA’s, winning the NCAA Regionals, winning the NCAA Quarterfinals and then if we are in the NCAA Finals Four, anything can happen. We know how difficult all of that is, but we are all making the sacrifices and working hard in an attempt to make it a reality!

ROHNERT PARK, Calif- A well played game against two evenly matched teams was marred by 13 yellow cards and four red cards on Sunday afternoon in the conclusion of the 2007 Seawolf Classic Soccer Tournament. No. 12 Seattle University converted on a penalty kick late in the first half for the game-winner in a 2-1 win over Sonoma State.
BELLINGHAM, Wash- Andrew Bailey posted a hat trick to lead Sonoma State to a 3-1 win over Western Washington on Saturday evening in Bellingham. The win lifts the Seawolves to 1-1-1 on the season. The Vikings go to 2-1-0 with the loss.
Said SSU head coach Marcus Ziemer, “We played a great game. We put a lot of pressure on them and came up with a flurry of chances, but came up unlucky.” It was an up-and-down game full of exciting scoring opportunities and two very talented soccer teams. Despite the Seawolves putting on most of the pressure early on, it was Seattle that scored first, on a well-placed header off a corner kick in the 13th minute. Jason Cascio got the goal while teammates Dustin Allerby and Mutanda Kwesele earned assists. Sonoma was quick to respond as Andrew Bailey’s pass to a darting Steven Browne resulted in the first goal of the season for the Seawolves. Browne was able to punch it past the Seattle goalkeeper to knot things at one.

Bailey’s hat trick was the first for a Seawolf since Nathan Medina’s against Cal State Dominguez Hills on October 16, 2005. With 29 career goals, Bailey, a junior, is now tied for fourth in school history with Joel Heffren. Bailey’s explosion came in the second half, after a full 45 minutes had gone by in the first half scoreless. In fact, it was Western Washington that was able to bust through first, scoring off a corner kick in the 50th minute. Said SSU head coach Marcus Ziemer, “Western Washington came out very aggressive.” The Seawolves knotted the game in the 60th minute when a cross was flicked in front of the goal, then finished off by Bailey. Mark Wiedeman and Michael Asaro were credited with assists on the goal. The go-ahead goal came in the 64th minute when Scott Preckwinkle’s long cross was punched in by Bailey from six yards out. Bailey was able to tack on an insurance goal in the 88th minute when he blasted one into the left corner from about 20 yards out. “We were missing a few guys due to red cards last weekend, so this was a very good result for us,” commented Ziemer after the win. The Seawolves out shot the Vikings 21-10, though WWU had a 6-5 edge in corner kicks. Fouls were even at 20. Sonoma St. Western Wash.

It was the 12th win in the last 13 games for the Seawolves over the Wildcats. “I thought we played really well today and that we could have scored more. Our bench came up big again and it was good to get Bailey and Medina back on track,” said head coach Marcus Ziemer. Despite a 10-2 shot advantage in the first half, the Seawolves entered the break stuck in a 0-0 tie. Said Ziemer, “I knew if we kept on working, good things were going to come.” In short time, they did. Just under four minutes into the second half, Medina broke through when he scored off a beautiful cross from Eric Lafon. Eric Larson was credited with an assist as well for moving the ball up the sideline to Lafon. The Seawolves got the capper in the 58th minute when Andrew Bailey received a perfectly placed Stuart Gallant pass and beat the goalkeeper to the right.

ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Mike Travis scored the game-winning goal on a free kick with just six seconds remaining in regulation on Tuesday afternoon to give 21st-ranked Sonoma State a 3-2 win over Holy Names University. The win is the eighth in a row for the Seawolves as they improve to 9-2-1. The Hawks drop to 6-2-2 with the loss. The Seawolves have not lost since a September 3rd setback to Seattle Pacific. It marks the second consecutive year that the Seawolves have put together an eight-game winning streak in the middle of the season. Being a non-conference game, head coach Marcus Ziemer took the opportunity to sit all of his starters and rely on his talented reserve core. Stars like Andrew Bailey and Nathan Medina didn’t get into the game until the final 20 minutes and other regulars like Eric Larson, Scott Preckwinkle, Stuart Gallant, Doug Carr, and Brook Johnson, didn’t even play. However, the reserve core more than held their own against a talented Holy Names squad made up of mainly foreign players.

It was one of several let downs that Coach Ziemer identified after the game. SSU took a 2-1 lead in the 39th minute when Casey Dayton found net off a brilliant pass by Cody Ericson. The score would remain 2-1 until the 80th minute when HNU’s Ricardo Vargas scored when he flicked on a free kick by Jamie Haynes. It looked like overtime might be on the horizon, but the Seawolves reached deep into their stash of late-game heroics. After a foul was committed just outside the box with about 40 seconds left, SSU was awarded a free kick. However, play was slow to continue as the Hawks stacked the field between the ball and the goal. It wasn’t until six seconds were remaining that Mike Travis got off a shot that headed straight toward the back of the net, winning the game for SSU, 3-2. “I thought we had a couple of let downs, but we played against a good team and I felt we competed well,” said Ziemer. “We had several chances to win...and we finally got the gamewinner.” The game featured eight yellow cards, four by each team, all in the first half. Freshman Taylor Jones got his first start and made two saves to earn the win. Holy Names Sonoma St.

With the win, the Seawolves are now 22-2-1 in their last 25 conference games. They also are starting out the CCAA season with an 8-0-0 record for the second straight year. It also marks the second time this season that the Seawolves have beaten the No. 6 team in the country. SSU was a 4-2 win over Cal State L.A. back in September when they held that ranking. In a very physical game between two highlyskilled teams, it was the Seawolves breaking through first when Andrew Bailey scored his CCAA-high 11th goal of the year in the 25th minute. Casey Dayton made the score possible with a brilliant pass that Bailey headed past CSUDH keeper Derby Carrillo. It is the 37th goal of Bailey’s career, leaving the junior just five behind all-time leader Andrew Ziemer. Ross Middlemiss put the icing on the cake in the 68th minute when he scored off a double assist by Eric Lafon and Steven Browne. Lafon crossed the ball in to Browne, who’s shot deflection was gathered by Middlemiss and punched into the goal. It was the third goal of the season for Middlemiss. Both teams had opportunities to score later in the game, but the SSU defense held strong, thanks in large part to the play of Scott Preckwinkle and Eric Larson. Ziemer recognized the duo after the game as stars, even though their names don’t show up on the scoring log. Brook Johnson was also stellar in goal, making three saves to record his fifth shutout of the year. Cal St. Dom. Hills Sonoma St.

They are also 23-2-1 in their last 26 conference games, dating back to 2005. Sonoma State found the first goal just four minutes into the game when Mike Asaro brought the ball in from the right side, dished it to Andrew Bailey, who found Nathan Medina and a leaning UCSD goalkeeper. Medina tapped it in for his sixth goal of the season. Despite an 11-2 shot advantage in the first half, the Seawolves weren’t able to put another one in the net until just under two minutes into the second half. Then it was Mark Wiedeman beating the keeper to the lower right off assists from Eric Larson and Ross Middlemiss. The lead would hold for about ten minutes until UCSD cut the lead in half on a Tony Choi goal. Choi’s gathered a loose ball and ricocheted it off the left post and into the net. The Seawolves held a 19-5 shot advantage and took eight corners to UCSD’s seven. SSU head coach Marcus Ziemer was impressed with the opponent, calling the Tritons “a good young team that played really hard.” Ziemer would go on to say, “We had a chance to put the game away, but we couldn’t capitalize on our opportunities.” Frustrated by his team’s second half performance, Ziemer said, “It looked like we thought it was a walk in the park. STATE 5 NOTRE DAME de NAMUR 0 October 24, 2007 ROHNERT PARK, Calif- The Sonoma State men’s soccer team rolled to their 15th consecutive win on Wednesday with a 5-0 rout of Notre Dame de Namur at Seawolf Field. The five goals are a season-high for the 11thranked Seawolves as they improve to 16-2-1. The Argonauts fall to 7-8-1. Head coach Marcus Ziemer was pleased with his team’s effort after the game, “I was worried about us coming out flat, but we were ready to play today. We won’t enjoy this one for long... we’re going to be ready for Humboldt State on Sunday.” Ziemer also stressed that the Seawolves are taking things just one game at a time. Sonoma State found net in the 12th minute of the game when Steven Browne hooked up with Andrew Bailey, who beat the goalkeeper in a 1-v-1 to the lower right. The score wouldn’t stay 1-0 for long as a Jack Jones free kick was flicked by Bailey to Medina for a goal under a minute later. The Seawolves put two more goals on the scoreboard over the next thirteen minutes. The first was a nice effort from Doug Carr and Nathan Medina, who gave Eric Lafon a nearly empty goal. Lafon easily booted it in to make it 3-0. The score was upped to 4-0 in the 27th minute when Bailey was set up for another goal. This time, goalkeeper Brook Johnson’s throw met Mark Wiedeman past midfield. Wiedeman dribbled it down the sideline and centered it to Bailey, who scored his second goal of the game. It was also the 15th goal of the season for Bailey, the CCAA’s leader, tying him for third on the single-season goals list. Jeremy Sweet also had 15 for SSU in 1995. Bailey is now just one goal from tying Andrew Ziemer’s career scoring record. The junior from Davis has 41 goals in his career as a Seawolf. The final goal was put on the board in the 58th minute when Scott Preckwinkle made good on a penalty kick. The five-goal margin was the largest for Sonoma State since a 9-2 win over Cal State Monterey Bay last October. SSU out shot the Argonauts 27-7 in a dominating offensive performance. Bailey alone took as many shots as NDNU did. Brook Johnson made two saves on his way to

October 28, 2007 ARCATA, Calif- Andrew Bailey scored his 42nd career goal to tie Andrew Ziemer for the top spot on Sonoma State’s all-time scoring list on Sunday in a 5-0 win over Humboldt State. It was the second consecutive 5-0 win for SSU as they close out CCAA play with a perfect 140-0 season. The Seawolves are 17-2-1 overall and will enter the playoffs on a 16-game winning streak. The Seawolves have outscored their last five opponents by a score of 21-3. SSU has scored at least three goals in all of those matches and has recorded 5-0 wins in their last two outings, including Friday against Notre Dame de Namur. Bailey is the conference’s leader with 16 goals this season. He had 13 as a freshman and as a sophomore. Andrew Ziemer scored 42 goals for the Seawolves in 1990 and 1991. Sonoma State rolled on Sunday thanks to four first half goals. “We came out ready to play today,” said SSU head coach Marcus Ziemer, “We jumped on them early and played well throughout.”
However, as pleased as Ziemer has been with this team’s effort, he knows there is much more to do. “I’m happy with where we are, but now the real season starts. We haven’t accomplished a thing yet.” The last CCAA team to go 14-0-0 in conference play was Cal State Dominguez Hills in 2000.
The final margin of 5-0 was set in the the 51st minute on an ‘own goal’ by Humboldt State. Perhaps lost in all the scoring was a fine effort by SSU’s defense. Seawolf goalkeeper Brook Johnson needed to make just one save in the game, on his way to his eighth shutout of the year.

CCAA CHAMPIONSHIP November 4, 2007 CARSON, Calif - The Sonoma State men’s soccer team lost a tough one to Cal State Dominguez Hills, 1-0 in the CCAA Championship game. The loss ends SSU’s school record 17-game winning streak. It was a hard fought match that could have gone either way. “We jumped on them early, but couldn’t get a goal”, said head coach Marcus Ziemer, “After they scored we through everything we had at them, but couldn’t find the net”. With the loss, the Seawolves, currently ranked 2nd in the region, will most likely drop to #3 and will be heading either back to Dominguez Hills or up to Seattle University for the NCAA regionals. “We don’t care where we go,” said Ziemer, “After being left out last year, we just want the call saying that we are in!” In 2002, the Seawolves lost in the conference tournament, but ended up beating Dominguez Hills in the NCAA’s and went onto win the National Championship. Today’s match-up pitted the best two teams in the conference, with neither team giving an inch. The Seawolves started fast as Nathan Medina took a loose ball 3 yards from the CSUDH net and blasted his left-footed shot high just 15 seconds into the contest, after which Julio Madrigal blocked a Casey Dayton blast in front of the Toro net in the 10th minute.

That missed opportunity became a harbinger for the Toros as Madrigal sent a corner in the 19th minute to Gallaugher, who headed the feed to Serpas, who then headed the ball past SSU keeper Brook Johnson near post for a 1-0 lead at 18:07, accounting for the first half’s lone score. As the game progressed, so did the intensity and physicality of the play as seven cautions were issued in the second half as an urgent Seawolf team pressed the Toro defense for the chance to equalize. SSU outshot the hosts 9-3 after the break, tallying a 17-11 overall shot advantage for the game. CSUDH keeper Derby Carrillo tallied four saves in the clincher, while SSU’s Brook Johnson went for three in the loss. “The last time played Sonoma (Oct. 5), I thought we played good but were not as sharp as we were today,” begins Flanagan. “We had a little more of a game plan today and I think we followed it. CSUDH beat SSU 1-0 for the CCAA Championship. It was just the second shutout of the year for the Seawolf offense and SSU’s Ross Middlemiss made sure it wouldn’t happen again. Middlemiss scored the game’s first goal in the 12th minute when he gathered a rebound and blasted it past the goalkeeper. For his play over the weekend, Middlemiss was named the regional’s Most Outstanding Offensive Player. The Toros drew even in the 39th minute when Mario Guerrero scored off a Sammy Rivas assist. The score would remain 1-1 through regulation and two ten-minute overtime periods to set up an exciting PK shootout. SSU led off with Middlemiss, who converted his chance to put SSU ahead 1-0. The Toros then missed their next shot, thanks to a brilliant save by Brook Johnson, to put them in a precarious situation. After Eric Larson netted his opportunity to make it 2-0, the Toros again were denied by SSU’s All-Region goalkeeper. Down 2-0, the Toros were definitely in trouble. The Seawolves led 3-2 and with Mark Wiedeman ready to fire, they needed just one more conversion to get the win. Wiedeman’s shot was true and the Seawolves celebrated on the Toros’ home field. It was SSU’s first win over CSUDH in Carson since the 2002 Far West Region championship. Sunday’s affair was as close as the talent level between the two teams. The shots were even at 17, the fouls were even at 20, and CSUDH had a 4-3 edge in corners. The Seawolves dedicated the win, and their entire post-season run, to last year’s senior class (Brett Cook, Jaime Rivera, Clark Rupp, and Mason Hill-Harrill), who were denied a berth in the NCAA Tournament in ‘06. NCAA DIVISION II QUARTERFINAL November 17, 2007 WICHITA FALLS, Texas- The Sonoma State men’s soccer team’s season came to an abrupt end on Saturday night as they lost to Midwestern State in a penalty kick shootout. Though the score of the game will go down as a 2-2 tie, the Mustangs advance to the Final Four by virtue of a 5-4 win in the shootout. The Seawolves end the season with a 19-3-3 record. Unfortunately, however, Mark Wiedeman was denied and MSU’s Brian Martinez made good. “Wiedeman is money. He hit the deciding kick last week against CSUDH, but the keeper just made a great save.” Said Ziemer, “Penalty kicks are not a fun way to end a game, especially when you lose. I liked our chances, especially considering how well Brook Johnson did against Dominguez Hills last weekend.” Heading into the sixth round, SSU’s Nathan Medina was turned away by the Mustang ‘keeper. Needing just one goal for their own advancement, MSU’s Ahman Ihmeidan beat SSU’s Brook Johnson for the difference maker. It was an unfortunate end to an outstanding season.

BILL FUSCO
DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS Bill Fusco is now in his 12th year as the Director of Athletics at Sonoma State University. Under his leadership, SSU intercollegiate teams have become a competitive force since joining the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) in 1998. SSU teams have performed well at the regional and national level during his tenure. Fusco has overseen an unprecedented number of changes in the SSU intercollegiate athletic program, since his arrival in 1997.
