HEAD COACH MARCUS ZIEMER Marcus Ziemer returns for his 19th season as head coach of the Sonoma State Men’s Soccer team this fall.

INFORMATION

A two-time all-conference performer for Sonoma State in the 1980’s, Ziemer has compiled a 244-107-35 record over the past 18 years. Though his squads have had success year in and year out (just one sub .500 season since 1991), the Seawolves of the last three seasons have taken winning to a whole other level. Since 2006, Ziemer has led the Seawolves to a 38-3-3 record in CCAA play. Overall, the Seawolves are 51-11-8 over the last three seasons, with three NCAA Tournament appearances and a west region championship in 2007. The 2008 season was another banner season for Sonoma State soccer. Ranked as high as No. 2 in the nation, the Seawolves were 18-2-4 overall, winning their second CCAA title since 2005. After winning the league championship over eventual national champion Cal State Dominguez Hills on penalty kicks, the tides were turned the next week as the Seawolves fell on PKs to Cal State L.A., ending their hopes for the second national title in program history. Since coming to Sonoma State, Ziemer has been named his conference’s coach of the year six times, the last coming in 2007. He is also a two-time regional coach of the year and in 2002, he was named national coach of the year in 2002 after leading the Seawolves to their first national championship. Ziemer began his coaching career in 1989, assisting head coach Peter Reynaud with the SSU men’s squad. In 1991, after Reynaud left to concentrate on the women’s team, Ziemer was promoted to head coach and results came immediately. Ziemer led his squad to the NCAA championship game and he was named Northern California Athletic Conference Coach of the Year for his efforts. Under Ziemer, the Sonoma State men’s soccer team has won six conference titles and has a record of 180-57-17 in conference play. In 1988, Ziemer spent three weeks in England earning an English Football International Preliminary Badge. He earned his USSF “A” license the following year. A fixture in local soccer circles, Ziemer and his three brothers (Andrew, Benjamin, Christopher -- all former SSU players) have run the Ziemer Brothers Soccer Camps for over 20 years, educating thousands of youth soccer players. Ziemer lives in Glen Ellen with his wife Trish (Gretton), a member of SSU’s 1990 women’s soccer national championship team. They have three children, Thomas, Taylor, and Tera.

ASSISTANT COACH SHAWN PERCELL

Former Cardinal Newman High and Santa Clara University star Shawn Percell returns for his third season on the Sonoma State coaching staff in 2009. Percell came to the Seawolves from Seattle University, where he was an assistant on the women’s soccer team.

Percell is still active on the field as he was an instrumental part of the Sonoma County Sol’s 2009 NPSL national championship squad.

Benjamin Ziemer, head coach Marcus’ younger brother, returns for his fourth season on the Seawolf staff. Ziemer attended Sonoma State in 1990 and 1991 and ranks sixth in school history with 20 assists. His 11 assists in the 1991 season helped lead SSU to the NCAA Division II National Championship game.

At the club level, Maycock has been the Director of Coaching for West County United for the last five years. Still an active player as well, Maycock was a key part of the Sonoma County Sol’s NPSL national championship run this summer.

INFORMATION

Tim Maycock is back for his third year as a member of the coaching staff, following a four-year playing career for the Seawolves. A freshman on SSU’s 2002 national championship team, Maycock was an integral part of the team’s championship run, scoring two goals in the national quarterfinals and pitching in with an assist in the title game. Maycock closed out his career in 2005 with a total 18 goals and nine assists.

Ziemer is also the head coach at Sonoma Academy and the head coach of the national champion Sonoma County Sol. He guided the Sol to the 2009 National Premier Soccer League championship this summer.

ASSISTANT COACH BENJAMIN ZIEMER

In addition to his coaching experience with the Sounders, Percell spent three seasons as an assistant with the Seattle University women’s team, helping lead the Redhawks to the NCAA Division II Quarterfinals in 2004. Prior to that, he was an assistant with both the men’s and women’s teams at Santa Clara University, winning a national championship with the women’s side in 2001. Along with his current coaching duties at Sonoma State, Percell also guides the Santa Rosa United Celtic, an Under 17 team.

INTRO

Percell enjoyed a fantastic high school career, first at Piner High School, then at Cardinal Newman in Santa Rosa. The Redwood Empire and North Bay League Player of the Year as a senior, Percell led his 1995 team to an NCS Championship. He went on to play at Santa Clara University, where he appeared in two NCAA Division I Final Fours (1999 and 2000). In 1999, he was named the Offensive Most Valuable Player of the College Cup. Percell played professionally for a year in Belize before coming back to the States and joining the Seattle Sounders of the United Soccer League’s First Division. He played a total of three seasons with the Sounders before joining the coaching staff of the women’s team, eventually becoming the head coach.

Middlemiss scored two of his goals in the first half as the Seawolves steam rolled to a 4-0 halftime lead. Nathan Medina got the party started with a six-yard tap in just under 15 minutes in. Just over a minute later, Middlemiss picked up his first score with a strike from ten yards out.

The Silverswords were thinking upset early, when Chad Thompson picked up an unassisted goal to stake his side to 1-0 lead just under 13 minutes in. The Seawolves would not be able to break through until just after the 30-minute mark when defender Scott Preckwinkle netted one off an assist from Eric Lafon.

Just before the half, Nathan Medina found net for the second time on the Hawaiian excursion off an assist from Middlemiss.

The Seawolves out shot the Seasiders 25-10 in the game and had a 10-0 advantage in corner kicks. Brook Johnson made three saves en route to the shutout.

Three second half goals- one by Stuart Gallant and a pair by red hot Ross Middlemiss- put the game out of reach.

Said head coach Marcus Ziemer, “The defense was solid. We gave BYU very few opportunities and most of their shots were from distance.”

Looking back, Ziemer said, “When we went up 2-0, they were tired and started to drop their heads, but we didn’t put them away and let them back in the game. HPU had a great game plan and did a good job lf keeping compact and making it difficult for us to score.” For the match, the Seawolves out shot the Sea Warriors 23-7 and held a 14-3 advantage on corners. Trailing 2-0 with just twenty minutes to one of the top teams in the nation would seem to break the optimism of most teams, but the Sea Warriors were resilient, battling their way to a goal just seven minutes later by Max Anton. With just under eight minutes left in regulation, HPU scored again. This time Anton assisted Chance Bukoski, to tie things up at two.

The game’s final score came in the 53rd minute when Middlemiss scored on a double assist from Casey Dayton and Andrew Bailey.

Despite dominating play in the first half, as evidenced by an 8-2 shot advantage, the Seawolves had to settle for a 0-0 score at the break. They were finally able to break through in the 50th minute when Alan Grady scored his first collegiate goal to make it 1-0. Said head coach Marcus Ziemer, “Alan came in and brought a lot of energy before scoring a very nice goal.”

Just six minutes later, Sonoma’s all-time leading goal scorer, Andrew Bailey, picked up his first score of the season off an assist by freshman Cory Taufer. It would give the Seawolves a lead they would not relinquish.

KANEOHE, Hawaii- All-American Andrew Bailey scored the game-winner with just 25 seconds left in double overtime as the sixth-ranked Sonoma State men’s soccer team avoided the upset with a 3-2 win over a resilient Hawaii Pacific squad. The win gives the Seawolves a perfect 3-0-0 record after their season opening trip to Hawaii.

ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Seniors Ross Middlemiss and Eric Lafon scored goals on Sunday afternoon to lead the fourth-ranked Sonoma State men’s soccer team to a hardfought 2-0 win over Western Washington at Seawolf Field in Rohnert Park. With the win, the Seawolves improve to 5-0-0 on the season. The Vikings drop to 1-2-0.

BELMONT, Calif- In one of the biggest stunners in some time, the second-ranked Sonoma State men’s soccer team lost to Notre Dame de Namur, 2-1, on an Argonaut goal with just two seconds remaining in overtime. It is the first loss of the season for the Seawolves as they fall to 5-1-0 on the season. The Argonauts improve to 4-2-1.

The Seawolves are off to their best start since 2002, when the eventual national champions began the sesaon with ten straight wins.

It was the first victory in 27 meetings for Notre Dame de Namur over Sonoma State. The Seawolves held a 25-0-1 edge.

Said Sonoma State head coach Marcus Ziemer, “This was a great game. We came in prepared and we were very sharp.”

The Argonauts came out of the gate strong, undaunted by the task of playing the nation’s second-ranked taem. Both teams attempted five shots in the first half, though none reached net thanks to the play of the SSU defense and goalkeeper Brook Johnson.

ROHNERT PARK, Calif- If history stays true for the Sonoma State men’s soccer team, Friday afternoon’s 4-1 win over Seattle Pacific could be the sign of good things to come. You see, in 17 previous games against the Falcons, the Seawolves had only beaten them once.... in 2002, when Sonoma State went on to win the national championship. The title is a long, long ways away, but so far, so good for the fourth-ranked Seawolves as they improve to 4-0-0 on the season. The Falcons drop to 0-2-1. While the Seattle Pacific uniform looked the same, one thing was definitely missing, long time head coach Cliff McCrath. McCrath “retired” amidst a fair amount of controversy in the off-season. A very close friend of McCrath’s, SSU head coach Marcus Ziemer admitted after the game that the win had a little extra meaning. “I feel like, in a way, we won this one for Cliff. I know he’d appreciate that one.” McCrath and Ziemer had become so close over the years that the guest speaker at Sonoma State’s national championship celebration banquet in 2002 was none other than the former SPU coach, McCrath himself. “Cliff had this mystique about him. Our guys felt much more relaxed going into this one without Cliff on the sidelines. No disrespect to SPU coach Mark Collings, but Cliff was a legend,” said Ziemer.

The game was exciting from the get-go with each team nearly scoring in the first two minutes of the game. Despite numerous scoring chances, the teams entered the break scoreless thanks to some solid goalkeeping and excellent defense. In the second half, the Seawolves continued to pepper the WWU defense with threats. Fourteen minutes into the second, WWU’s Joel Grossman and SSU’s Jack Jones collided going for a loose ball. The referee gave Jones a yellow, but he pulled red on Grossman and left the Vikings a man down for the final thirty-one minutes.

The Seawolves were quick to take the lead on Friday as Nathan Medina banged home a shot after gathering the rebound of an Andrew Bailey shot. His strike gave the Seawolves a 1-0 lead just over eight minutes in. Adding a little injury to insult, SPU goalkeeper Ben Lovelace was injured and left the game, not to return.

The red to Grossman may have been just the break the Seawolves needed as just six minutes later they were able to break through. Ross Middlemiss brought the ball up, then laid it off to Andrew Bailey who paused and slid it over to Lafon. From the left side, Lafon quickly blasted the ball to the right of the Viking keeper to make it 1-0.

Down a goal early, the Falcons would be quick to knot things up as Drew Williams poked one in on a scramble in front of the net in the 14th. That would be just about all the offense SPU would muster, however, as the Seawolves’ defense tightened up and allowed just three shot total in the game, two in the first half and one in the second.

SSU picked up an insurance goal in the 82nd minute when Ross Middlemiss was fouled in the box on a scoring opportunity. Middlemiss took the PK himself and converted to make it 2-0. It was the seventh goal of the season for the Arcata native.

Ross Middlemiss scored what would turn out to be the game-winning goal in the 28th minute when he scored off an Eric Lafon assist. The Seawolves would add two quick goals in the second half to put the game out of reach. Lafon got a goal of his own in the 51st off a double assist from Scott Preckwinkle and Middlemiss. In the second half, senior Andrew Bailey came up with the game’s first goal when he wheeled around the defense and fired a shot past the NDNU keeper. It was the third goal of the season for Bailey, SSU’s all-time leading goal scorer. The Argos tied the game up in the 63rd minute when Luis Astorga scored off a double assist from Christian Rosales and Jacob Zavala. There were a few scoring opportunities over the final 27 minutes, but both teams came away empty to set up overtime. In overtime, the Seawolves came out strong, keeping the ball in the Argonaut zone for much of the period. As time was running down, however, NDNU played the ball into the far right corner. Astorga chased down the ball, then played it back to Sean Gurley with around six seconds left. Gurley then crossed it to the far post where Mark Bennett headed it home for the game-winner with just two ticks left. The win lifts the tenth-ranked Seawolves to 7-1-0, 2-0-0 CCAA. The Gators drop to 2-4-1, 0-3-0 CCAA. Langwith started off the day’s scoring with a nice goal off an assist from Eric Lafon. It was the Langwith’s first goal in a Sonoma State uniform. That strike came in the 17th minute and it would stand clear until the 65th minute when All-American Andrew Bailey doubled the lead. After a nice cross from freshman Cam Vickers, Bailey fired the ball at the goal, only to see it bounce off the crossbar and back into play. He quickly gathered the rebound and poked it into the net. It was the four goal of the season for Bailey, Sonoma State’s all-time leader. Late in the second half, San Francisco State began to put more pressure on the Seawolf defense. They finally broke through in the 74th when Charles Conway’s long cross met with Sergio Villalva’s foot. Villalva hammered it home, to the left of the keeper to make it 2-1. Head coach Marcus Ziemer remarked, “We could have put them away, but we let them back in. We had a lot of chances to score to put the game out of reach. The last ten minutes got a little scary.” SF State would try to get another goal, but the Seawolves’ backfield was up to the task, denying all Gator advances. All in all, Ziemer was happy with the way his Seawolves performed, stating “We played well and were able to take them out of their game. As a team, we’re just focusing on getting better every single game.” Ziemer was particularly encouraged by the play of Ryan Hall, a sophomore from Trabuco Canyon who started at left back for an injured Stuart Gallant, saying “Ryan played great. He’s a hard-nosed defender who’s also great on the ball. He has a very bright future.” The Seawolves out shot the Gators 14-4 in the game and had a 4-2 lead in corner kicks. ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Despite a healthy shot advantage, the Sonoma State men’s soccer team had to settle for a 2-2 tie with Cal State Monterey Bay in CCAA action on Sunday in Rohnert Park. The Otters tied the game up with under four minutes remaining in regulation to avoid the loss and improve to 0-4-3, 0-2-2 CCAA. The Seawolves, ranked tenth in the nation, go to 7-1-1, 2-0-1 CCAA. The draw snaps a 20-game winning streak in conference play for the Seawolves dating back to October, 2006. The game’s first score came just five minutes in as Ross Middlemiss got a feed from Ben Langwith and lofted over the pulled out goalkeeper. That lead would stand until just three and a half minutes before the break when Grant Robson scored his first goal off the season after heading in a free kick from Kevin Amaral. The Seawolves were able to take advantage of a hard foul in the box in the 70th minute when Middlemiss converted a penalty kick for a 2-1 lead. It was the tenth goal of the season for the forward from Arcata. With time winding down, the Otters took advantage in a misplay by the Seawolves as Andy Binol jumped on a clearance attempt and slotted it past the keeper. The Seawolves turned up the pressure in overtime, out shooting the Otters 3-1, but a second yellow to Jack Jones shortly before the end of the period made the Seawolves play a man down the rest of the way. Opportunties continued to arise in the second extra frame, but despite four shots, the Seawolves came away empty handed. CSUMB goalkeeper Brenden Baca was credited with six saves in the match. ROHNERT PARK, Calif- In a hotly contested battle between two nationally-ranked teams, it was 23rd-ranked Sonoma State defeating 5th-ranked Cal State L.A. 2-0 on Sunday afternoon in Rohnert Park. The win pushes the Seawolves record to 8-1-2, 3-0-2 CCAA. The Golden Eagles suffer their first defeat of the season, falling to 7-1-1, 4-1-1 CCAA.

LA JOLLA, Calif- Senior Mark Wiedeman tied the school record with three assists and Ben Langwith scored twice to lead Sonoma State to an impressive 4-0 road victory over UC San Diego on Friday night. The win pushes the sixth-ranked Seawolves to 9-1-2, 4-0-2 CCAA. The Tritons drop to 6-3-1, 3-3-1 CCAA.

Fans barely had a chance to take their seat before Ross Middlemiss found the game’s first goal, just 2:06 in off a double assist by Nathan Medina and Mark Wiedeman. It was the 11th goal of the season for Middlemiss, the Far West Region leader.

The Seawolves got on the board in the 22nd minute when Ross Middlemiss scored on an incredible header. The play was set up by a nice crossing effort from Eric Lafon. It was Middlemiss’ 12th goal of the season.

Humboldt would tie things up in the 22nd minute when Ben Vasser found Matt Colwell for the equalizer. The score would stay 1-1 until two minutes before the break when Ray Lind’s shot bounced off the crossbar and was pushed in by Kete Meskill.

Lafon found a goal of his own in the 33rd minute when he punched one home off a cross from freshman Cam Vickers. Lafon has six goals this season to go along with a team-high five assists.

Eight minutes into the second half, the Seawolves caught a bit of good luck. On a Sonoma attack, the ball bounced off a Humboldt defender and into the net for an own goal.

Said head coach Marcus Ziemer, “We came in very prepared today and played sharp. We were able to create a lot of good opportunities. This is a step in the right direction.”

Neither team could score for the remainder of the second half and then through a pair of ten-minute extras. The Seawolves clearly controlled play with Humboldt packing it in and playing hard-nosed defense to fend off the Sonoma advances. After the first half, Sonoma State attempted 12 shots to just two for Humboldt.

Though the Golden Eagles would actually out shoot the Seawolves in the second half, 4-3, their opportunities were smothered by a sharp Seawolf defense. Doug Carr, Scott Preckwinkle, Jack Jones, and Stuart Gallant were all over the place and Brook Johnson had a very nice effort in his return to the net, making two saves.

However, just like in Sunday’s game against CSU Monterey Bay, the Seawolves would have to settle for a draw. Over the last two games, the Seawolves have out shot their opponents 41-13, but they’ve gained only two points in the conference standings.

Said Ziemer, “We did a good job of keeping everything in front of us and deniing them clear chances. Brook made a great save on a free kick in the first half, which would have given LA some momentum going into halftime.”

Drew Ryan was credited with five saves in goal for the ‘Jacks. His counterpart, Taylor Jones came up with two.

For the game, Sonoma State out shot Cal State L.A., 8-5. Thirty fouls were called and six yellows were issued, three to each team.

The Seawolves out shot the Lumberjacks 20-5 for the game, though corner kick attempts were nearly equal, 4-3 (Seawolves).

“This was a good effort after a couple of mediocre performances (ties with CSU Monterey Bay and Humboldt State),” said Ziemer.

It was second consecutive shutout win for the Seawolves, pushing their unbeaten streak to six games in a row. After nearly 70 minutes of scoreless action, the Seawolves finally broke through when Langwith scored off a pass from the corner by Wiedeman. That strike set the Seawolves loose on a scoring outburst that would see them find net three more times in the next nineteen minutes. Langwith would make it 2-0 with his second goal of the game just 1:48 after his first. Again, the assist came from Wiedeman from the left corner. In the 77th minute, Nathan Medina got on the board with his fifth goal of the season off a double assist from Cam Vickers and Wiedeman. The scoring would be capped with just four seconds left when Alan Grady picked up his second goal of the season off an assist from freshman Davide Furtado. The 17th-ranked Seawolves stay unbeaten at home (6-0-2) and improve to 11-1-2, 6-1-2 CCAA on the season. The Broncos fall to 4-8-1, 2-7-1 CCAA.

Said head coach Marcus Ziemer, “We came out ready to go today. It was good to get back in our groove early.” Middlemiss got goal number two in the 11th minute when defender Jack Jones dropped a long pass into the middle of the field where Middlemiss booted it home. He earned the hat trick in the 59th minute off a feed from Andrew Bailey and then did one better in the 70th. Vickers set the play up with a cross that was bumped to Middlemiss from Bailey and then poked through. Remarked Ziemer, “Ross seems to be scoring for fun these days.” The Arcata native scored on all four of his shot attempts on Friday. The Seawolves closed out the day’s scoring when Davide Furtado picked up his first collegiate goal off a Mark Wiedeman assist in the 71st minute. That goal would stand up thanks to the play of the SSU defense, including goalkeeper Brook Johnson, who recorded four saves en route to his sixth shutout of the season. Ziemer remarked, “We had a lot of chances, but we kept coming up unlucky. However, we were able to keep sharp and not get down.” The Broncos had one great look in the 86th minute, but a rocket of a shot by Nathan Braunwalder ricocheted off the cross bar and away. ARCATA, Calif- Senior Andrew Bailey collected his first hat trick of the season as Sonoma State rolled over Humboldt State 5-0 on Sunday afternoon in Arcata. The 16th-ranked Seawolves improve to 12-2-1, 7-1-2 CCAA on the season. The Lumberjacks slip to 7-5-4, 2-5-3 CCAA.

ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Freshman Cam Vickers assisted on the game-tying goal near the end of regulation, then scored the game-winner in double overtime to lead Sonoma State to a 2-1 come-from-behind win over Fresno Pacific on Tuesday at Seawolf Field. The 13th-ranked (NCAA Division II) Seawolves improve to 13-2-2 on the season while the 12th-ranked (NAIA) Sunbirds fall to 8-3-1.

The Seawolves are currently riding a three-game winning streak in which they’ve outscored their opponents 11-0. Bailey scored the first three goals of the game. He was joined in the goal-scoring party by Mark Wiedeman and Taylor Jones, a goalkeeper making only his second appearance in the field. Bailey’s first netter came in the 26th minute when he hit a header from Nathan Medina past an oncoming goalkeeper. Ross Middlemiss and Jack Jones teamed up for the assist on goal number two as Bailey scored on a through ball. It was the 50th goal of Bailey’s Sonoma State career. The third goal came from a one-timer off a free kick by Eric Lafon in the 62nd minute. Bailey is the school’s all-time leader in goals scored with 51. He is also the school’s all-time leader in shots attempted (241) and points scored (122). Lafon picked up another assist on the Seawolves’ fourth goal, by Wiedeman, in the 76th. The goal allowed him to pass Andrew Ziemer and move into third place all-time at SSU with 25 assists.

The Seawolves thoroughly dominated play on Sunday, out shooting the Lumberjacks 29-10 and holding a 7-1 edge in corner kicks.

“This was a great win for us today,” said head coach Marcus Ziemer, “Even though it was non-conference, it was important for us to fight from behind to get the win and keep our streak alive. Fresno Pacific is a very good team.” Despite a healthy 10-2 shot advantage in the first half, the Seawolves could not find net and the teams entered the break scoreless. It would be Fresno Pacific breaking through first when, in the 54th minute, Daniel Spieth scored off an assist by Marcelo Molina. “We started of guys who haven’t played as much. They played well and generated some good chances, even though we couldn’t get one to fall,” said Ziemer.

Friday’s game was quite a reversal from September’s meeting when the Seawolves and Otters tied 2-2 in Rohnert Park. Eric Lafon found goal number one just under six minutes in when he tapped in a cross from Nathan Medina and Cam Vickers. Said head coach Marcus Ziemer, “We were ready to play today and we came out and scored a quick goal, which forced them out a little bit.” Medina was involved on the second goal of the day as well as he fed Ross Middlemiss in the 24th minute to make it 2-0. It was Middlemiss’ CCAA-best 17th goal of the season.

It looked like the Seawolves might be heading for their first home defeat of the year before some late game heroics by Vickers and Scott Preckwinkle saved the day. SSU kept the pressure on and finally, in the 86th minute a Vickers corner was headed past the keeper by Preckwinkle.

The next two goals came off the foot of freshman Davide Furtado. In the 42nd minute he netted one off a double assist by Middlemiss and Stuart Gallant. Furtado’s second goal, fifteen minutes into the second half off another assist by Medina, pushed the margin to 4-0 and effectively ended any chance of an Otter comeback.

With just two minutes left in overtime, the Seawolves found the game-winner. On their 27th shot of the game, Vickers got a feed from Andrew Bailey on the right and rocketed it past the keeper for the game-winner. It was the first collegiate goal for the freshman from Lake Tapps, Washington.

Cam Vickers scored a goal for the second straight game in the 76th minute off assists by David Holleran and Nicholas Lombardi. Just under two minutes later, Taylor Jones also scored to cap the scoring. Ben Langwith and Lafon were credited with assists. Jones, a goalkeeper, has now scored two goals this season in three appearances in the field.

The Seawolves out shot the Sunbirds 27-3 in the game. They also had a healthy advantage in corner kicks (12-2) and fouls (20-9).

The Seawolves out shot the Otters 22-6, including 16-4 in the first half. Brook Johnson went the distance in goal to secure his ninth shutout of the year.

The Seawolves return to league play this weekend as they head to Cal State Monterey Bay (Friday) and San Francisco State (Sunday). Said Ziemer, “We get a day to recover, then we need to prepare for CSUMB and SFSU. They are always tough on the road, but we have a lot to play for and we’ll be ready!”

“The defense was sharp today and they worked hard to keep the shutout,” said Ziemer.

The Gators would slice the lead in half just over a minute later when Spencer Schwandt converted a penalty kick.

Lafon’s three assists give him 30 for his career, surpassing the old record of 29 held by Christopher Ziemer (1990-91, 97-98). Lafon leads the CCAA with 12 assists this season, the same amount he had last year when he also led the conference.

ROHNERT PARK, Calif- After a scoreless first half, Sonoma State opened up the floodgates in the second on their way to a 4-0 blanking of rival Chico State in the regular season finale for both teams on Sunday at Trione Fields in Santa Rosa. Both teams have qualified for next week’s CCAA Tournament in La Jolla. The 12th-ranked Seawolves will enter the tournament as the top seed for the second straight year as they go to 17-2-2, 11-1-2 with Sunday’s win. The Wildcats go to 13-5-0, 9-5-0 CCAA. The Seawolves will enter the tournament on an eightgame winning streak in which they’ve outscored their opponents 28-2. Sunday’s fourth goal was the 64th of the season for Sonoma State, tying the school record set in 1991. In a well played first half in which neither team could reach the net, the Seawolves and Wildcats had the surprisingly large crowd thinking we’d be in for a nail biter. Said head coach Marcus Ziemer, “We just weren’t sharp in the first half. We didn’t play with any urgency and we weren’t moving the ball well.”

The Seawolves had several solid opportunities early, but it wouldn’t be until the 26th minute that the met ball with net. Lafon’s corner kick was tapped by Jack Jones to an oncoming Scott Preckwinkle who sent it in to make it 1-0.

Said head coach Marcus Ziemer, “It is always tough to play at SF State. Our goal today was just to get a win. The field was in rough shape, so it was hard to pass it around.”

Said head coach Marcus Ziemer, “We came out ready to play. We could have capitalized on some of those early opportunities, though.”

Just three minutes into the second, the Seawolves would start to turn the tide when Ben Langwith headed in a Jack Jones cross to make it 1-0 in favor of the “home” team. “We made some adjustments at the half,” said Ziemer, “We didn’t think they’d be able to run with us.”

Though their contributions don’t necessarily show up in the box score, Coach Ziemer was quick to complement a pair of freshmen, Davide Furtado and Cory Taufer for their strong play in the game.

The score would go to 2-0 in the 43rd minute when another Lafon corner kick was given to Davide Furtado. Furtado scored a magnificent goal off his heel as he was heading away from the goal to leave the fans in hysterics heading into the break.

Eleven minutes later, the Seawolves found goal number two when Scott Preckwinkle set up Eric Lafon for a goal with a nice shift in the box.

Late in the game, the Seawolves would tack on one more when yet another Lafon corner kick was headed in from 10 yards out by sophomore Ben Langwith.

Despite the dominating performance, Ziemer praised the Warriors, saying “Stanislaus played hard. They are definitely better than their record would indicate.”

The final goal of the game arrived in the 72nd minute when Nathan Medina blasted home one of his patented lasers off a Ross Middlemiss assist.

Said Ziemer, “We’re focused. Now more than ever, we’re taking it one game at a time.”

Coach Ziemer was proud of his team’s performance and was sure to comment on the play of his reserves, “We have so much depth. Guys like (Ben) Langwith are coming up big.”

The Seawolves did a great job of limiting Warrior opportunities as they out shot their opponents 21-3. They also held an 8-3 advantage in corners.

The rout was on when, in the 70th minute Preckwinkle and Lafon would again connect for a goal. This time it was Lafon feeding Preckwinkle with a beautiful, lofting corner kick. It was Lafon’s 13th assist of the season, tying the school’s all-time single season record (Andrew Ziemer, 1991 and Roman Ritz, 1993).

The 1-0 lead was soon doubled to 2-0 when Andrew Bailey scored his eighth goal of the season off an assist from freshman Cam Vickers in the 24th minute. For Vickers, it was his league-high 10th assist of the season.

The victory also clinches the CCAA North Division title for Sonoma State. It is their fifth consecutive division title and their sixth in the last seven years.

LA JOLLA, Calif- The Sonoma State men’s soccer team was able to hold off Cal State L.A., 2-1, in the semi-final match of the CCAA Men’s Soccer Championships, Friday afternoon on the campus of UC San Diego. CCAA Offensive Player of the Year Ross Middlemiss knocked in the clinching goal in the 80th minute, allowing the Seawolves to advance to the CCAA Championship game for the second year in a row. The win improves Sonoma State’s record to 18-2-2, while Cal State L.A. drops to 13-4-3.

“This was a great win for us,” said head coach Marcus Ziemer, “We’re a little banged up right now. Two of our defenders (Jack Jones and Stuart Gallant didn’t play due to injuries and Mike Duncan, Ryan Hall, and Nicholas Lombardi stepped right in for us and played great. Two injuries to the back line would kill most teams, but our depth has really paid off.” Senior forward Nathan Medina started things off for Sonoma State in the 23rd minute of the first half, when he rocketed a shot past the Golden Eagles’ goalkeeper to the upper right corner. Medina was set up by Andrew Bailey beautifully, as Bailey collected the loose ball in the middle of the field and dished it off to a sprinting Medina for his ninth goal of the year. Sonoma State dictated the flow of the game in the first half, out-shooting Cal State L.A. 6-3, with three of their shots coming on goal. However, the second half was a different story. “I thought we dominated play in the first half, but you have to give CSULA credit. They came out ready to play and took it to us in the second half,” remarked Ziemer. Cal State L.A. came out aggressively in the second half, out-shooting the Seawolves 6-3. The Golden Eagles found the equalizer in the 64th minute when a free kick was sent into the box where Kyle Hewitt gathered the loose ball and placed it perfectly into a small window in the upper left corner to tie the match at one.

With the game tied 1-1, Sonoma turned to their biggest play maker to come up with the big play. Middlemiss answered the call in the 80th minute with his 18th goal of the season to put the Seawolves up for good 2-1. Eric Lafon sent a cross from the left corner and Middlemiss took care of the rest, chipping the ball over the keeper’s head into the center of net. The assist was Lafon’s 14th of the year, which breaks the school’s all-time record for assists in a season. With the victory, Sonoma State advances to its second consecutive CCAA Championship game, and its third in four years. The Seawolves will square off against Cal State Dominguez Hills, who defeated Chico State earlier in the day 5-3 on penalty kicks. This a rematch of the 2007 Championship game, in which the Toros edged the Seawolves 1-0. Said Ziemer, “We are going to take the day off tomorrow to regroup and assess our injuries. LA JOLLA, Calif- The Sonoma State men’s soccer team claimed their second CCAA title on Sunday afternoon with an exciting penalty kick win over Cal State Dominguez Hills at Triton Field in La Jolla. Officially, the game will be recorded as a 0-0 tie, but the Seawolves will be sure to savor their 6-5 edge in penalty kicks and the accompanying CCAA Championship banner. Eleventhranked Sonoma State will enter the NCAA West Regional at 18-2-3 while the fourth-ranked Toros will go in at 16-2-4. Said head coach Marcus Ziemer, “This was an incredible game that could have gone either way. Our defense was outstanding today... Brook, Duncan, Carr, Preck, Hall, and Taufer... they were all fantastic.” The Seawolves won their first CCAA title in 2005, also against Cal State Dominguez Hills. Sonoma State has now won seven conference title (five of them in the NCAC) under Marcus Ziemer: 1991, 1993, 1995, 1996, 1997, 2005, 2008. Both defenses were superb on Sunday afternoon, yielding shots, but no goals. Cal State Dominguez Hills had an overall lead in shots attempted (18-11). “This game was like a boxing match,” said Ziemer, “We would dominate and have them on the ropes, they they would counter and take it to us.” On to penalty kicks, the Seawolves looked like they might be in trouble when Cam Vickers missed at the No. 2 spot, but a quick miss by the Toros’ Scott Mariano and a conversion by Sonoma’s Ryan Hall put the team on even footing again. The Seawolves would not miss again, collecting scores from Scott Preckwinkle, Mark Wiedman, and Ben Langwith before Davide Furtado had what would turn out to be the game-winner. It was the game-winner because on their next attempt, the Toros were turned away by a big save from Sonoma State’s Brook Johnson. Johnson matched a season-high with six saves in the contest, in the process posting his 11th shutout of the season and moving into a tie for the career record of 24 (Dave Kaufman, 1989-91). He was named the Most Valuable Defensive Player of the tournament while Ross Middlemiss was named the Most Valuable Offensive Player. The pair were joined on the all-tournament team by Nathan Medina, Furtado, and Mike Duncan. Remarked Ziemer, “Our depth really paid off today. We went deep on the bench and everyone added something to the game.”

cont’d The Seawolves have now been shutout twice this season, both times by the Toros. They have, in turn, shutout 11 of their opponents. The result brings back memories of last year’s regional championship game, also won by Sonoma State on PKs, 4-2.

“It was very emotional after the game and it is hard to believe that Bailey, Nathan Medina, Doug Carr, Scott Preckwinkle, Lafon, Wiedeman, Mike Duncan, Jones and Middlemiss put the SSU jersey on for the last time,” remarked Ziemer, “They will be missed..they’ve given their heart and soul to this program! These guys and their families will be missed but not forgotten!”

In one of the more remarkable games in Sonoma State soccer history, the Seawolves and Golden Eagles staged a 1-1 tie through 110 minutes of action, though that doesn’t even begin to tell the story.

“We have had great teams with a lot of talent the last couple of years but it is so difficult to get out of our region, let alone to the final four. It really makes me realize how special that 2002 season was!,” said Ziemer.

Trying to beat the Golden Eagles for the third time this season, the Seawolves were subdued by an impressive CSULA defense early on. Cal State L.A. outshot the Seawolves 10-3 in the first half and though the margin would be closer in the second (8-6), neither team was able to find net.

Ziemer concluded by saying, “Right now everyone is pretty devastated, but in a few weeks we will look back and realize what a great season it was. We ended up 182-4 and as anybody who saw us play can tell you, we did it with style. We broke several school records and played entertaining, attractive football. It has always been a goal of mine to play great soccer. I have to watch every game so I want to enjoy it!”

At the 88:24 mark of the game, Cal State L.A. struck. Awarded a penalty kick, Rufino Franco converted to give the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead with just 96 seconds left in the game. Game over, right? The Seawolves hadn’t scored in nearly 89 minutes, so the odds had to have been stacked pretty high against them. Sure enough, however, freshman Cam Vickers came through just 24 seconds later, scoring off a double assist by Ross Middlemiss and Eric Lafon.

Said Ziemer, “Considering how banged up we were at the end of the season, it is remarkable that we won the conference and ended the season without a loss in our last 11 games. We lost Casey Dayton, Jeff Loesche, and Stuart Gallant to knee injuries, Jack Jones and Lafon for the conference tournament and Mark Wiedeman and Andrew Bailey were hobbled for the latter part.”

“We showed a lot of grit and character to come back after the penalty with less than two minutes left,” said head coach Marcus Ziemer, “Lafon said ‘put me back in coach’ in a voice that sounded like he was going to make something happen, so I quickly subbed him in and thirty seconds later he sent in a free kick which Ross headed to Cam who hit a wicked side volley for the goal. If there had been more time, we could have scored again because the momentum clearly shifted. CSULA did a good job regrouping for overtime. We came out on fire and had an early chance, but their keeper made a good save from a shot from Vickers and then it was back and forth after that. “

bill fusco

director of athletics Bill Fusco is now in his 13th year as the Director of Athletics at Sonoma State University. Under his leadership, SSU intercollegiate teams have become a competitive force since joining the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) in 1998. SSU teams have performed well at the regional and national level during his tenure. Fusco has overseen an unprecedented number of changes in the SSU intercollegiate athletic program, since his arrival in 1997. SSU Athletics has successfully moved into the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), initiated the awarding of athletic scholarships, transitioned to a new mascot, established media partnerships and has expanded fund raising through special events like Bidnight Madness, the annual car drawing and the Annual Fund Drive of the University Athletic Association. Fusco has served as President of the CCAA (2004-05) and is the Past President of the NCAA Division II Athletics Directors Association. He also served for four years (1999-2003) on the Executive Committee of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA). Fusco also served on the NCAA Division II Degree Completion Scholarship Committee and the NCAA West Region Women’s Tennis Committee. He recently completed a term on the California State University Risk Management Authority Athletic Injury Medical Expense Board. Fusco was recently appointed to a four-year term on the NCAA Championships Committee. As President of the NCAA Division II Athletics Directors Association he helped develop the Division II Model Athletics Department, a program that establishes the guiding principles of operating a Division II intercollegiate athletic program. With over 27 years of combined athletic administrative experience, Fusco has served as Director of Athletics at the University of San Francisco and Dominican University of California and as Sports Information Director at St. Mary’s College in Moraga and the University of San Francisco. He is an adjunct faculty member in the USF Graduate Sports Management Program where has taught an elective class titled Administrative Leadership in Intercollegiate Athletics. He is also an adjunct faculty member at Dominican University and has taught a class titled Introduction to Sports Management. Fusco resides in Petaluma with his wife Cathy. Their son Michael is a graduate of Long Beach State University and their daughter Marissa is a freshman at Sonoma State University.

YVONNE BURBANK

ASSOCIATE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR Yvonne Burbank is in her fourth year as Associate Athletics Director and Compliance Coordinator at Sonoma State University in 2009-10. A decorated women’s basketball star at SSU from 1995-99, Yvonne Burbank (then Yvonne Daily) was a team captain and the president of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). On the court, she helped lead the team to an NCAC co-championship and to back-to-back NCAA regional appearances. Burbank joined the women’s basketball coaching staff under Mark Rigby from 1999-2001 before moving on to the University of San Francisco for a two-year stint on the Dons’ coaching staff. While at USF, Burbank earned her Master’s Degree in Sports Management. Prior to returning to Sonoma State, Burbank spent three years as the head girl’s basketball coach at Sonoma Academy in Santa Rosa. She was also an integral part of the academy’s athletic department, overseeing scheduling, game management, and revenue generation.

BRANDON BRONZAN

ASSOCIATE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR

A member of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), Bronzan serves on the organization’s Publications Committee and Membership Services Committee. He is also a voting member of the National Collegiate Baseball Writers of America (NCBWA) and coordinator of the Daktronics All-West Region Division II Men’s Soccer team. This year, he will begin his second year on the NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Regional Advisory Committee. A native of Visalia, California, Bronzan resides in Windsor with his wife Tiffany and his daughter, Olivia.

ASSISTANT ATHLETIC DIRECTOR

Christensen joined the department as a staff member after serving as an intern during her final two years as a student. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications from Sonoma State in 2007.

NANCY CROSAT

Nancy is in her 14th year at Sonoma State University and her third year in the athletic department as the Administrative Analyst. She has a strong background in office management, bookeeping and a complete appreciation of sports, which helped her find a way into the department. A native San Franciscan, who proudly notes her children are “fifth generation SFers,” Nancy currently resides in Petaluma with her husband Bob.

SPORTS INFORMATION COORDINATOR Tyler Lobe is in his first year as the Sports Information Coordinator at Sonoma State University. He is in charge of in-game statistical information and will produce pre- and post-game releases and publications while helping to maintain the department web site. HISTORY

Christensen is a former All-Region defender for the Women’s Soccer program at Sonoma State (then Megan Catton). As a team captain, she led her team to two conference tournament appearances in four years. Off the field, she served as the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) president and was named one of Sonoma State University’s Student Woman Leaders of the Year in 2007. This past June, Megan wed former Sonoma State basketball star Kevin Christensen and the couple resides in Santa Rosa.

Megan Christensen is in her third year at Sonoma State University, and in her first year as Assistant Athletic Director for Event Management & Operations. Christensen oversees special events, fund raising projects, camps and game day management, as well as coordinating Bidnight Madness- the department’s annual silent/live auction fund raiser.

Prior to coming to Sonoma State, Bronzan was a Media Relations Assistant with the Tennessee Smokies, then Class AA affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays. Bronzan also worked for the Visalia Oaks and as a student assistant in the Sports Information department at SSU. He is a 2001 graduate of Sonoma State University with a B.S. in Business Administration (Management).

INTRO

Brandon Bronzan is in his eighth year as a member of the Sonoma State University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics. Hired as Sports Information Director in 2002, Bronzan was promoted to Assistant Athletics Director in 2006 and Associate Athletics Director in 2008. He was re-classified as the Associate Athletics Director for Communications and Marketing in 2009. Bronzan oversees seven sports within the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and is involved with the marketing and promotion of all teams and student-athletes. He also handles game scheduling and in 2008 established The Seawolf Sports Network, which broadcasts Sonoma State sporting events on the Internet.
