Coaching Staff Mark James Head Coach

Mark James returns for his fourth season as head coach of Sonoma State’s cross country team in 2009. With the infusion of talented young student-athletes, the future is bright for the Seawolf cross country program. Despite some injuries down the stretch in 2009, the team finished ninth in the CCAA for the second consecutive year. One place the Seawolves are second-to-none is in the classroom. The squad placed an astounding nine student-athletes on the CCAA All-Academic list, which tied UC San Diego for the most honorees on a cross country team. Freshman Rachel Borg was also named to the USTFCCCA All-Academic team for her hard work in the classroom. A collegiate and professional athlete, James arrived at Sonoma State with impressive credentials. A runner and swimmer at El Molino and Montgomery High in the early 1980s, James went on to compete as a swimmer at Santa Rosa Junior College and UC Santa Cruz. While at UC Santa Cruz, James was also active with the collegiate cycling team, a skill he would put to good use over the next decade as a competitive triathlete. A ten-time finisher of the prestigious Hawaii Ironman Triathlon (1992-2001), James is a two-time champion of the Maui Ironman and he has completed the Boston Marathon twice. He also has experience in the armed forces as a member of the U.S. Navy’s Special Forces SEAL Team II and the Navy Pentathlon team. Prior to joining Sonoma State, James also coached swimming and cross country at El Molino High School.

Chandra Farnham Assistant Coach

Chandra Farnham is in her second year as assistant coach for the women’s cross country team at Sonoma State University. Farnham is a 2006 graduate of Sonoma State, where she competed in both cross country and track and field. She is the most recent cross country athlete to garner all-west region from Sonoma State, accomplishing the feat in 2003. Chandra also works for Fleet Feet sports in Santa Rosa as their triathlon and 10k coach.
