The 2011 season will mark Marcus Ziemer’s 21st as head coach of the men’s soccer team at Sonoma State University. A two-time all-conference performer for Sonoma State in the 1980’s, Ziemer has compiled a 272118-40 record over the past 20 years. Though his squads have had success year in and year out (just one sub .500 season since 1991), the Seawolves of the last five seasons have taken winning to a whole new level. Since 2006, Ziemer has led the Seawolves to a 58-11-7 record in CCAA play. Overall, the Seawolves are 79-22-13 over the last four seasons, with four NCAA Tournament appearances, two CCAA championships, and an NCAA West Region Championship in 2007. With a young team, some thought that 2010 might be something of a rebuilding year for the Seawolves. Someone forgot to tell that to the team, however, as they stormed out to five wins in their first six games. Though they would not capture the North Division crown for the first time since 2003, the Seawolves turned away the competition at the CCAA Championship Tournament, beating Cal State Dominguez Hills in the final for their third conference title since ‘05. The Seawolves would also advance to the NCAA Tournament for the fourth straight year and fifth time since 2005. Since coming to Sonoma State, Ziemer has been named his conference’s coach of the year six times, the last coming in 2007. He is also a two-time regional coach of the year and in 2002, he was named national coach of the year in 2002 after leading the Seawolves to their first national championship. Ziemer began his coaching career in 1989, assisting head coach Peter Reynaud with the SSU men’s squad. In 1991, after Reynaud left to concentrate on the women’s team, Ziemer was promoted to head coach and results came immediately. Ziemer led his squad to the NCAA championship game and he was named Northern California Athletic Conference Coach of the Year for his efforts. Under Ziemer, the Sonoma State men’s soccer team has won six conference titles and has a record of 200-65-21 in conference play. In 1988, Ziemer spent three weeks in England earning an English Football International Preliminary Badge. He earned his USSF “A” license the following year. A fixture in local soccer circles, Ziemer and his three brothers (Andrew, Benjamin, Christopher -- all former SSU players) have run the Ziemer Brothers Soccer Camps for over 20 years, educating thousands of youth soccer players.

Shawn Percell

Benjamin Ziemer

5th Season | Santa Clara (2000)

6th Season | Sonoma State (1992)

Former Cardinal Newman High (Santa Rosa) and Santa Clara University star Shawn Percell returns for his fifth season on the Sonoma State coaching staff in 2011. Percell came to the Seawolves from Seattle University, where he was an assistant on the women’s soccer team.

Benjamin Ziemer, head coach Marcus’ younger brother, returns for his fifth season on the Seawolf staff.

Percell enjoyed a fantastic high school career, first at Piner High School, then at Cardinal Newman in Santa Rosa. The Redwood Empire and North Bay League Player of the Year as a senior, Percell led his 1995 team to an NCS Championship. He went on to play at Santa Clara University, where he appeared in two NCAA Division I Final Fours (1999 and 2000). In 1999, he was named the Offensive Most Valuable Player of the College Cup. Percell played professionally for a year in Belize before coming back to the States and joining the Seattle Sounders of the United Soccer League’s First Division. He played a total of three seasons with the Sounders before joining the coaching staff of the women’s team, eventually becoming the head coach. In addition to his coaching experience with the Sounders, Percell spent three seasons as an assistant with the Seattle University women’s team, helping lead the Redhawks to the NCAA Division II Quarterfinals in 2004. Prior to that, he was an assistant with both the men’s and women’s teams at Santa Clara University, winning a national championship with the women’s side in 2001. Along with his current coaching duties at Sonoma State, Percell also guides the Santa Rosa United Celtic, an Under 17 team. Percell is still active on the field as he was an instrumental part of the Sonoma County Sol’s 2009 NPSL national championship squad. He loves to follow the Seattle Sounders, the “best team” in the MLS.

Ziemer attended Sonoma State in 1990 and 1991 and ranks sixth in school history with 21 assists. During his first season, he had 12 assists and in his senior campaign, he scored six goals and assisted on nine others for the NCAA Division II runner-up Cossacks. Ziemer is also the head coach at Sonoma Academy and the head coach of the 2009 national champion Sonoma County Sol.

Andrew Jones 2nd Season | CSU Northridge (2009) Andrew Jones enters his first year as a volunteer assistant coach with the Seawolves. Jones comes to Sonoma State from Lyon College in Arkansas, where he spent the 2009 season as an assistant. Jones’ playing days were spent at the College of the Canyons in Santa Clarita. He also was an all-conference selection at Los Angeles Baptist High School. A 2009 graduate of Cal State Northridge, Jones has also spent time coaching at San Fernando High School and Los Angeles Baptist.

Ben Langwith 2nd Season | Sonoma State (2011) Ben Langwith is back for his second year on the coaching staff following a two-year playing career for the Seawolves. A transfer from the University of Kentucky, the native of Des Moines, Iowa finished his career with nine goals and six assists. Langwith scored five goals as a junior in 2008, while playing in every game for the CCAA champion Seawolves. In 2009, he scored four goals, including two in the CCAA Championship game against rival Cal State Dominguez Hills.

A stellar defensive effort and an early second half goal by Cam Vickers spelled victory for Sonoma State in the finals of the 2010 CCAA Championship Tournament. The Seawolves defeated Cal State Dominguez Hills 1-0 to earn their third CCAA title and second in the last three years. Following the match, head coach Marcus Ziemer said, “It’s always tough to win a CCAA championship...but we did it. We had great fan support... there were over 25 alumni in the stands and a lot of family friends. Thanks to all of them!”

Sonoma State Men’s Soccer

The CCAA The California Collegiate Athletic Association has been the nation’s most successful intercollegiate athletic conferences since its establishment in December 1938. The 12-member league is home to some of the nation’s finest NCAA Division II athletic programs in Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cal State East Bay, Cal State L.A., Cal State San Bernardino, Cal State Stanislaus, Chico State, CSU, Monterey Bay, Humboldt State, UC San Diego, San Francisco State and Sonoma State. CCAA institutions compete in six women’s and six men’s conferencesponsored sports. Fall sports include men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer and women’s volleyball. Men’s and women’s basketball are contested in the winter, and men’s golf, men’s and women’s outdoor track & field, softball and baseball comprise spring competition. CCAA members have won 151 NCAA Championships (102 men, 49 women) all time, far and away the most of any Division II conference. On the men’s side, CCAA members have brought home at least 10 titles in swimming & diving (25), wrestling (16), track & field (13), tennis (11) and baseball (10). CCAA institutions have been very successful in the history of NCAA women’s athletics, having won 10 cross country, nine softball, six track & field, five volleyball and five basketball national championships as well as 13 more in four other sports. The CCAA has undergone several changes in conference membership since charter members UC Santa Barbara, Fresno State, San Diego State and San Jose State came together to form the league in 1938. Over the past 70 years, a number of institutions have been members of the CCAA, including Cal State Bakersfield, Cal State Northridge, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Chapman, Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach State, Pacific, Pepperdine, UC Riverside, UC Davis and Grand Canyon University. The CCAA Commissioner’s Office relocated from southern California to the San Francisco Bay Area-suburb of Walnut Creek in July 1998. Robert J. Hiegert is in his 14th year as the Commissioner.
