Bear Grassl

Record At Sonoma State

10th Season | Sonoma State University (1991)

Year

Head Coach Bear Grassl returns for his tenth year at the helm of the Sonoma State University volleyball program in 2011. The 2008 CCAA Coach of the Year, Grassl has led the Seawolves to the NCAA Tournament in each of the last three seasons, compiling an overall record of 63-25 over that span. Last year’s edition finished 17-10 and earned the No. 5 seed in the NCAA West Regional. Following the season, two Seawolves were named All-American, pushing the number of All-America honors for the team to five since 2008. The 2009 Seawolves got out to the best start in program history, winning their first 11 matches on their way to a 23-8 overall record and their highest national ranking ever. Led by a core group of local players and a roster that featured a pair of All-Americans, the Seawolves advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive year, where they were upset by Cal State L.A..

Awards • 2008 CCAA Coach of the Year

The Seawolves burst on to the scene in 2008 when they won 14 of their first 15 matches. As the season went on, Sonoma State stayed close in the CCAA title race but went 9-5 the rest of the season and finished tied for second in the conference (15-5). However, the Seawolves had a stellar home record, going 14-1 on the hardwood of The Wolves’ Den. Sonoma State also appeared in the NCAA Division II West Regional Tournament for the first time since 1993, but a first-round loss to conference-foe Chico State knocked the Seawolves out of national title contention. Grassl took the reigns in 2002 and led the Seawolves to a 15-14 record. He repeated the feat in 2003 (15-14) and then went 14-12 in ‘04. In 2005 and 2006, the Seawolves struggled in the win column playing in the tough California Collegiate Athletic Association with a young squad. In nine seasons at Sonoma State, Grassl has coached five All-Americans and countless All-Conference and All-Region performers. He has also seen his players earn numerous Academic All-District honors in the past few seasons and the 2009-10 team recorded a team GPA of nearly 3.5. A 1991 graduate of Sonoma State, Grassl was head coach at El Molino High School from 1992-2001. During that span, he guided the Lions to six Sonoma County League championships, seven North Coast Section titles, five Northern California championships and one California state championship, in 1999. His career coaching mark at El Molino was an impressive 267-78.

The CCAA The California Collegiate Athletic Association has been the nation’s most successful intercollegiate athletic conferences since its establishment in December 1938. The 12-member league is home to some of the nation’s finest NCAA Division II athletic programs in Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cal State East Bay, Cal State L.A., Cal State San Bernardino, Cal State Stanislaus, Chico State, CSU, Monterey Bay, Humboldt State, UC San Diego, San Francisco State and Sonoma State. CCAA institutions compete in six women’s and six men’s conferencesponsored sports. Fall sports include men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer and women’s volleyball. Men’s and women’s basketball are contested in the winter, and men’s golf, men’s and women’s outdoor track & field, softball and baseball comprise spring competition. CCAA members have won 151 NCAA Championships (102 men, 49 women) all time, far and away the most of any Division II conference. On the men’s side, CCAA members have brought home at least 10 titles in swimming & diving (25), wrestling (16), track & field (13), tennis (11) and baseball (10). CCAA institutions have been very successful in the history of NCAA women’s athletics, having won 10 cross country, nine softball, six track & field, five volleyball and five basketball national championships as well as 13 more in four other sports. The CCAA has undergone several changes in conference membership since charter members UC Santa Barbara, Fresno State, San Diego State and San Jose State came together to form the league in 1938. Over the past 70 years, a number of institutions have been members of the CCAA, including Cal State Bakersfield, Cal State Northridge, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Chapman, Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach State, Pacific, Pepperdine, UC Riverside, UC Davis and Grand Canyon University. The CCAA Commissioner’s Office relocated from southern California to the San Francisco Bay Area-suburb of Walnut Creek in July 1998. Robert J. Hiegert is in his 14th year as the Commissioner.
