Emiria Salzmann 1st Season | Sonoma State University (1997) Emiria Salzmann, a former collegiate All-American and NSCAA national coach of the year at Santa Rosa Junior College, begins her first season as head coach at Sonoma State. Salzmann brings a wealth of experience as both a player and a coach. Named head coach at Santa Rosa Junior College in 2007, Salzmann has led the Bear Cubs to Big 8 Conference championships in each of her four seasons at the helm. She has been named conference coach of the year all four years and, in 2008 after guiding her team to a No. 3 national ranking, she was named NSCAA West Region and NSCAA National Coach of the Year. Her 2010 team was ranked as high as No. 4 in the nation and in four seasons she has coached six All-Americans and eight All-West Region student-athletes. Salzmann played three seasons at Sonoma State, from 1994 to 1996, capping her career with NSCAA All-American honors as a senior. That season she led SSU in scoring with 16 goals and, coupled with her 15-goal output as a junior in ’95, she owns two of the three highest single-season goal totals in school history.

“I had the privilege of playing for the greatest coaches and teams at Sonoma State, and it is such an honor to assume the head coaching position of a program that changed the course of my life,” said Salzmann. “I plan to give back to the university and the women’s soccer program what it once gave to me.” Following her career at SSU, Salzmann played semi-pro soccer with the Sacramento Storm and Sacramento Thunder (1997-99) and NEC Nijmegen of Holland (2000-01). A native of Santa Rosa, Salzmann was an all-conference and all-county honoree at Piner High School. She also played one season at Santa Rosa Junior College, where she led her team in scoring and was an all-league selection. Salzmann got her start in coaching in 1998 when she led her club team, Santa Rosa United Thunder, to the state cup title. The story of Salzmann and her evolving relationship with her team was turned into a book, entitled The Beautiful Game: 16 Girls And The Soccer Season That Changed Everything. Disney currently owns the movie rights to the book. Salzmann has enjoyed much success at the club level, winning countless tournaments, and from 2008 to 2010 she was the girl’s director of coaching for Santa Rosa United. As head coach of the Sonoma County Sol from 2007 to 2009, Salzmann guided a team that competed in the Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL), one of the top female leagues in the world. Salzmann’s first high school coaching assignment came at Ursuline High School in Santa Rosa, where, as co-head coach, she led her team to an NCS Championship and a No. 2 national ranking. The next year she guided her alma mater, Piner High School, as head coach. She got her first taste of coaching at the collegiate level in 2001 when she assisted former SSU head coach Peter Reynaud at Long Beach State. She helped lead the 49ers for three seasons before coming home for one season as an assistant at Sonoma State (2005).

Shannon Percell

Katie Turtle

3rd Season | Montana (2001)

2nd Season | UC Santa Barbara (2001)

Shannon Percell is in her third season as an assistant on the Seawolves women’s soccer team in 2011.

Katie Turtle returns for her second season on the coaching staff at Sonoma State, but her first since 2005.

A 2001 graduate of the University of Montana with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and a studentathlete on the women’s soccer team, Percell helped the Grizzlies to three Big Sky Championships (1997, 1999 and 2000) in her four-year career, including two appearances in the NCAA Tournament. As a freshman, she earned a spot on the Soccer Buzz All-Freshman West Region team and was named to the Freshman All-America Third Team. Not to mention, Shannon earned Big Sky All-Conference first team recognition all four years. Her teammates voted her as the team’s Most Valuable Player as a sophomore, junior and as a senior and was also named to the NSCAA All-West Team in 1999 and 2000.

An All-League and All-Empire selection at Ursuline High School in Santa Rosa, Turtle went on to play at Santa Rosa JC and UC Santa Barbara. Following her playing career, Turtle joined the coaching staff at Santa Rosa JC in 2003 for the first of her two stints with the Bear Cubs. In 2005, she served alongside Emiria Salzmann as an assistant under head coach Luke Oberkirch, before returning to the JC from 2007-10 as the top assistant.

Following her fantastic collegiate career, Shannon moved on to play semi-professional soccer with the Seattle Sounders and the Boston Renegades. A team captain with the Sounders from 2003-05, she helped the team to an appearance in the W-League Final Four (2003) and a quarterfinalist in 2004 while being named to the All-Western Conference team in 2003 and 2005. In 2002 with the Renegades, Shannon was named as the Player of the Year after helping Boston to a W-Leage National Championship.

Tim Maycock

Most recently, Shannon coached Sonoma Academy to the North Coast Section Championship in 2007 and 2008. A native of Tacoma, Wash., Shannon lives in Santa Rosa with her husband, Shawn, who is an assistant on the Sonoma State men’s soccer team.

Mark Dunn 1st Season | Santa Rosa JC (1990) Mark Dunn joins the Seawolves for the first time in 2011. A full-time firefighter, Dunn also brings some serious soccer credibility to the table.

Turtle is also involved with Sonoma County Alliance, where she has coached since 2008.

1st Season | Sonoma State (2006) A newcomer to the women’s coaching staff, Tim Maycock is certainly not a newcomer to Sonoma State soccer. A four-year student-athlete, Maycock has spent the last four seasons as an assistant on the men’s soccer team. A freshman on Sonoma’s 2002 national championship team, Maycock wa an integral part of the team’s championship run, scoring two goals in the national quarterfinals and pitching in with an assist in the title game. Maycock closed out his career in 2005 with a total of 18 goals and nine assists. At the club level, Maycock has been the Director of Coaching for West County United for the past six years. Still an active player, Maycock competes for the Sonoma County Sol and he was recently named the head coach of the boy’s team at Sonoma Academy.

An assistant at Santa Rosa JC under Salzmann since 2008, Dunn was the boy’s varsity coach at Montgomery High School in Santa Rosa from 2007 to 2009. In ‘08, he was named the North Bay League Coach of the Year. He also has experience coaching at the club level with Santa Rosa United. Dunn is engaged to head coach Emiria Salzmann.

Kiley Brown looks to a successful senior season. She has scored five goals and assisted on four others in her first three seasons at Sonoma State.

Taylor Colacion was off to a good start last season before an injury made her miss half the year. She was still tied for the team lead in goals.

Megan Cunningham was the Seawolves’ only all-conference selection last year, earning Second Team honors for her role in the midfield.

After two injury-plagued years, Taylor Edmonds hopes to return to the form that saw her earn CCAA Freshman of the Year honors in 2008.

Sonoma State Women’s Soccer

The CCAA The California Collegiate Athletic Association has been the nation’s most successful intercollegiate athletic conferences since its establishment in December 1938. The 12-member league is home to some of the nation’s finest NCAA Division II athletic programs in Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cal State East Bay, Cal State L.A., Cal State San Bernardino, Cal State Stanislaus, Chico State, CSU, Monterey Bay, Humboldt State, UC San Diego, San Francisco State and Sonoma State. CCAA institutions compete in six women’s and six men’s conferencesponsored sports. Fall sports include men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer and women’s volleyball. Men’s and women’s basketball are contested in the winter, and men’s golf, men’s and women’s outdoor track & field, softball and baseball comprise spring competition. CCAA members have won 151 NCAA Championships (102 men, 49 women) all time, far and away the most of any Division II conference. On the men’s side, CCAA members have brought home at least 10 titles in swimming & diving (25), wrestling (16), track & field (13), tennis (11) and baseball (10). CCAA institutions have been very successful in the history of NCAA women’s athletics, having won 10 cross country, nine softball, six track & field, five volleyball and five basketball national championships as well as 13 more in four other sports. The CCAA has undergone several changes in conference membership since charter members UC Santa Barbara, Fresno State, San Diego State and San Jose State came together to form the league in 1938. Over the past 70 years, a number of institutions have been members of the CCAA, including Cal State Bakersfield, Cal State Northridge, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Chapman, Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach State, Pacific, Pepperdine, UC Riverside, UC Davis and Grand Canyon University. The CCAA Commissioner’s Office relocated from southern California to the San Francisco Bay Area-suburb of Walnut Creek in July 1998. Robert J. Hiegert is in his 14th year as the Commissioner.
