MARCUS ZIEMER HEAD COACH
The 2012 season will mark Marcus Ziemer’s 22nd as head coach of the men’s soccer team at Sonoma State University. A two-time all-conference performer for Sonoma State in the 1980’s, Ziemer has compiled a 281- 12443 record over the past 21 years. Though his squads have had success year in and year out (just one sub .500 season since 1991), the Seawolves of the last six seasons have taken winning to a whole new level. Since 2006, Ziemer has led the Seawolves to a 66-16-10 record in CCAA play. Overall, the Seawolves are 88-28-16 over the last six seasons, with four NCAA Tournament appearances, three CCAA championships, and an NCAA West Region Championship in 2007. Since coming to Sonoma State, Ziemer has been named his conference’s coach of the year six times, the last coming in 2007. He is also a two-time regional coach of the year and in 2002, he was named national coach of the year after leading the Seawolves to their first national championship. Ziemer began his coaching career in 1989, assisting head coach Peter Reynaud with the SSU men’s squad. In 1991, after Reynaud left to concentrate on the women’s team, Ziemer was promoted to head coach and results came immedi- ately. Ziemer led his squad to the NCAA championship game and he was named Northern California Athletic Conference Coach of the Year for his efforts. Under Ziemer, the Sonoma State men’s soccer team has won six conference titles and has a record of 208-70-24 in conference play. In 1988, Ziemer spent three weeks in England earning an English Football Inter- national Preliminary Badge. He earned his USSF “A” license the following year. A fixture in local soccer circles, Ziemer and his three brothers (Andrew, Benja- min, Christopher -- all former SSU players) have run the Ziemer Brothers Soccer Camps for over 20 years, educating thousands of youth soccer players. Ziemer lives in Santa Rosa with his wife Trish (Gretton), a member of SSU’s 1990 women’s soccer national championship team. They have three children, Thomas, Taylor, and Tera.

Former Cardinal Newman High and Santa Clara University star Shawn Percell returns for his sixth season on the Sonoma State coaching staff in 2012. Percell came to the Seawolves from Seattle University, where he was an assistant on the women’s soccer team. Percell enjoyed a fantastic high school career, first at Piner High School, then at Cardinal Newman in Santa Rosa. The Redwood Empire and North Bay League Player of the Year as a senior, Percell led his 1995 team to an NCS Championship. He went on to play at Santa Clara University, where he appeared in two NCAA Division I Final Fours (1999 and 2000). In 1999, he was named the Offensive Most Valuable Player of the College Cup. Percell played professionally for a year in Belize before coming back to the States and joining the Seattle Sounders of the United Soccer League’s First Division. He played a total of three seasons with the Sounders before joining the coaching staff of the women’s team, eventually becoming the head coach. In addition to his coaching experience with the Sounders, Percell spent three seasons as an assistant with the Seattle University women’s team, helping lead the Redhawks to the NCAA Division II Quarterfinals in 2004. Prior to that, he was an assistant with both the men’s and women’s teams at Santa Clara University, winning a national championship with the women’s side in 2001. Along with his current coaching duties at Sonoma State, Percell also guides the Santa Rosa United Celtic, an Under 17 team. Percell is still active on the field as he was an instrumental part of the Sonoma County Sol’s 2009 NPSL national championship squad. He loves to follow the Seattle Sounders, the best team in the MLS.
TIM MAYCOCK ASSISTANT COACH
Tim Maycock returns for his fifth season as an assistant coach for the Sonoma State men’s soccer team in 2012. It will be his sixth year overall as an assistant at SSU; Tim spent the 2011 season as an assistant for the women’s soccer team. A former four-year student-athlete for the Seawolves, Tim was an integral part of the program as a freshman in 2002 when SSU won the national championship. During Sonoma State’s 2002 championship run, Maycock scored two goals in the national quarterfinals and pitched in with an assist in the title game. Maycock closed out his career in 2005 with a total of 18 goals and nine assists. At the club level, Maycock has been the Director of Coaching for West County United for the past six years. Still an active player, Maycock competes for the Sonoma County Sol and he was recently named the head coach of the boy’s team at Sonoma Academy.

As the Seawolves’ starting goalkeeper, he finished his career with 18 shutouts, a 1.04 goals against average and is atop or near the top in all major goalkeeping records at Sonoma State. Prior to attending SSU, Clark prepped at Deer Valley High School in Antioch, Calif. where he won a North Coast Section (NCS) title in 2000 and appeared in another final in 2002. A 2006 graduate of Sonoma State with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration, Clark is currently the Director of Goalkeeping for Sonoma County Alliance. Sonoma State University is an NCAA Division II member and part of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) and Western Water Polo Association (WWPA). Ten of SSU’s sports are in the CCAA, water polo is in the WWPA, and men’s and women’s tennis is a Division II independent. Sonoma State athletics got its start in 1964 with the school’s first men’s basketball team. Through the years, the Seawolves have had much success including national championships in 1990 (women’s soccer), 2002 (men’s soccer) and 2009 (men’s golf). MISSION STATEMENT: “The goal of the Sonoma State University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is to provide a positive, equitable, and diverse environment for the student-athletes and staff. All athletic staff members are responsible for fostering these priorities via role modeling and mentoring student-athletes while upholding a competitive spirit that stresses amateurism, ethical conduct, good sportsmanship, and rules compliance. Priorities for all student-athletes include: academic excellence, competitive success, and community outreach.”
