CORALIE SIMMONS HEAD COACH • 6th SEASON

Coralie Simmons returns for her sixth season as head coach of the Sonoma State women’s water polo team in 2013. Previously an assistant at UCLA and the University of Hawai’i, Simmons brings a wealth of national and international experience to Sonoma State’s water polo program. Last season, Simmons guided a young team to a 10-23 record overall and 6-13 in Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) play. The Seawolves went on to finish eighth in the WWPA Championship Tournament after a heartbreaking 7-6 overtime loss to Santa Clara in the seventhplace game.. Sonoma State plays one of the toughest schedules in the nation year in a year out. 12 of the 23 losses in 2012 came against nationally-ranked foes, while 13 of the Seawolves’ 28 losses in 2011 also came against ranked teams. Despite SSU’s tough schedule, Simmons was named the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPA) Division II National Coach of the Year in 2009 after leading the Seawolves to their best-ever finish in the WWPA Championship Tournament. Sonoma State finished 12-20 overall and went 9-9 in WWPA action, which included wins over nationally-ranked Santa Clara and UC San Diego.

As a sophomore in 1997, Simmons collected MPSF Southern Division Player of the Year honors, in addition to earning All-MPSF Tournament first-team accolades. She tied her previous singleseason school record for goals with 60 and netted points in 28 of 32 matches that season (15 multiple-scoring games). Simmons tallied two goals in the championship match against California that season. In her first season at UCLA, Simmons earned All-America firstteam accolades and led the Bruins in all offensive categories. She was selected to the 1996 National Collegiate Championship firstteam all-tournament team. Simmons assembled a 10-game scoring streak through the Western Regional Qualifying Tournament and National Collegiate Championships. Simmons earned a degree in geography/environmental studies at UCLA.

A two-time National Player of the Year at UCLA, Simmons guided the Bruins to their fourth national title in 2001 (in the inaugural NCAA title match). She was the recipient of the Pete Cutino Award, given annually to the top NCAA male and female players, and earned NCAA Tournament MVP honors. Simmons sat out the 2000 season as a member of the U.S. Olympic Team, and helped the United States bring home a silver medal at the Olympics in Sydney, Australia. She tied for the team lead in scoring with nine goals at the Games. Simmons helped the U.S. National Team qualify for the Olympic Games in the World Women’s Olympic Qualification Tournament in Italy, scoring a team-leading eight goals. In 1999, Simmons redshirted the season to compete with the U.S. Women’s National Team. She helped the United States capture a silver medal at the Pan-American Games that summer, and Simmons became the only team member to record a goal in all six Pan-Am Games (she also led the U.S. squad with 10 total goals). Simmons was named the National Collegiate Player of the Year for UCLA in 1997 and 1998. The Hemet, Calif., native earned All-America first-team honors, All-MPSF first-team accolades and first-team National Collegiate Championship honors in 1998 when she led the team with a school-record 74 goals in 115 attempts and posted a team-best 64 percent shooting average. In the national title game, Simmons scored three goals to help UCLA defeat California (May 10, 1998).

CHELSEA HENNAN

ASSISTANT COACH • 6th SEASON Chelsea Hennan is back for her sixth season in 2013 as an assistant on the SSU water polo team. A former SSU women’s water polo student-athlete, Hennan was selected First Team All-American in 2005 by the American Water Polo Coaches Association (AWPCA). She was the first water polo player in school history to earn All-America status. Being an All-American was nothing new to Hennan, however, as she earned the designation at Santa Rosa Junior College as a sophomore. Hennan left an impression on the SSU record books as well. For her career she ranks third in shot attempts and goals scored, fourth in field blocks, and seventh in steals. In 2005, Hennan led the team in goals scored, goals per game and attempts. Eleven times she led the offense in scoring for a game. For her career she scored a team game-high in goals 19 times. Hennan graduated from Sonoma State University in 2009 with a degree in Kinesiology.

Sonoma State University is an NCAA Division II member and part of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) and Western Water Polo Association (WWPA). Ten of SSU’s sports are in the CCAA, water polo is in the WWPA, and men’s and women’s tennis is a Division II independent. Sonoma State athletics got its start in 1964 with the school’s first men’s basketball team. Through the years, the Seawolves have had much success including national championships in 1990 (women’s soccer), 2002 (men’s soccer) and 2009 (men’s golf). MISSION STATEMENT: “The goal of the Sonoma State University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is to provide a positive, equitable, and diverse environment for the student-athletes and staff. All athletic staff members are responsible for fostering these priorities via role modeling and mentoring student-athletes while upholding a competitive spirit that stresses amateurism, ethical conduct, good sportsmanship, and rules compliance. Priorities for all student-athletes include: academic excellence, competitive success, and community outreach.”
