Teacher turned folk artist n Limited Primitives named 2017 Media Award Winner, work featured in 2018 promotions By Eric Sandbulte

The Brookings Register

BROOKINGS – At 54 years old, Paul Larson is still relatively new to this whole art show thing, but he’s made an impact all the same. Larson and his sister, Barb Stensgard, who run Limited Primitives, were named the Brookings Summer Arts Festival’s Media Award Winner at last year’s festival, and their work is featured this year in BSAF promotions. A North Dakotan who thinks of himself as a South Dakotan – he grew up on a farm 14 miles north of Lemmon, where he went to school – Larson brings an element of the wild and whimsical to his folk art and a bit of child-like wonder and joy. That might be a side-effect of his day-job, working as a second-grade teacher for more than 10 years in Moorhead, Minnesota. For 27 years, Larson has taught in Moorhead, and before that, for one year teaching the fourth grade in Sherburn, Minnesota. Even though he didn’t take any art classes, he still grew up with art, thanks to his mother. She would paint and do watercolors at night, and this was his introduction to art. Although he gave that finer kind of art a try, it never really agreed with him. Like many, he’d go to art shows with his wife during summers, and he would find himself frequently saying to her that he could make this or that

rather than buy it, though he never did. But about six years ago, he was working on his young son’s room. Larson saw pictures online about creating monsters assembled from scraps decorating a child’s bedroom walls, and he tried it out. Five or six homemade monsters later, Larson had his introduction to his style of folk art. He continued to make different

Come praise in the park BROOKINGS – Sunday morning at the Brookings Summer Arts Festival starts with a non-denominational church service at the Pioneer Park Bandshell at 8:30 a.m. The annual service is a longstanding tradition of the festival, so that artists, ven-

dors and patrons may start the day with worship. All are welcome. Vehicle parking will not be permitted inside the park. Attendees are asked to use alternate off-site parking. – From staff reports

creatures from scraps and giving them away as gifts. “Pretty soon, I was making fish and that started evolving into cows and little people doing things,” Larson said. It has also evolved into a summer gig, attending craft shows and art shows under the name of Limited Primitives. It’s not just him that’s a part of the small business: Stensgard is also a part of it, contributing

homemade signs that feature a variety of messages spelled out from letters harvested from things like board games and license plates. Larson said doing this business together has been a great way to stay in touch with her. Old screws and washers, broken tools and utensils and furniture all look different to him since he started doing this. Saw handles, for example, he’s found make for nice mouths. “I just like finding pieces of wood that have been painted three or four times and they’re cracking so you can see some of the old paint underneath,” he said. He added, “People often say, ‘Oh, I wouldn’t have seen that.’ But oftentimes you see something and go, ‘oh, that’s perfect for hair,’ like an old bristle brush or the end of an old push broom. Then you just start looking for those things.” Larson frequents auctions, estate sales and flea markets looking for new materials for his projects, but with upcycling and repurposing increasingly popular, there’s more competition in those places these days. One of the most satisfying aspects of his work is finding unusual things to incorporate or ending a particularly unique piece. It’s the freshness that comes with the latest project that he really loves. “My wife often will look at what I’m making and go, ‘Who in their right mind is going to buy that? It’s so weird!’ But you find those people, you find your kindred spirits who see it like you do, I guess,” Larson said. One of his favorite pieces depicts a little girl fishing at the end of a dock alongside her dog. “She’s got this line hooked to a bobber with a worm on the end and underneath the dock is a huge muskie, and it’s coming toward her worm,” Larson said.

Then there’s another piece that depicts another one of his passions, music, through two girls with very different tastes. One has an accordion and an accompanying playlist featuring love song bands like Air Supply. The other has a guitar and is dressed in leather; her playlist contains hard rock groups like ACDC. Children often play a part in his assemblages, something he chalks up to his teaching job. Cows are another frequent subject for him and serve as a kind of reflection of his rural upbringing, and they get people’s attention. “I get a lot of people who are interested in cows. Cows are just cool,” Larson said. One of the nice things about his style is that he can get away with making a few mistakes here or there. “That’s what I love about the stuff that I do. If I make a mistake, it almost adds to it, I guess, or I can cover it up easily. I don’t mind if there’s a scratch or something whereas other artists, everything has to be just so,” he said. Sadly, life and its attendant responsibilities as a father and husband is speeding up for Larson, so he has taken this year off. He does plan to get back into art shows when the time is right, however. In the meantime, he’ll continue to gather new materials and work on projects at his own pace, and he’ll continue to urge others to get into the arts, too. It’s as he said, “I really think anybody can be an artist, and oftentimes we’re not on a stage where people see what we do. Most of the time, we do it just because it brings joy.”
