We get a lot of calls for our doppelganger Brookings, Oregon. And we’re here to set the record straight… no, we don’t have coastlines or an Azalea Festival. But we do have lots of lakes for fishing, one of the largest outdoor art festivals in the state (Brookings Summer Arts Festival) and a 25-arce botanical gar den with 45-acre arboretum open year-round.

Where can I park my RV?

If you’re making a pit stop in Brookings on your way west, we’ve got a few places to park your RV. Located in Brookings is Sexauer Park & Campground, located in the northwest part of Brookings, is open May-October. The Swiftel Center also has a few spots reserved for guests of the event center, specifically if you’re here for a cattle show or other agriculture event. For a quick, overnight stay, feel free to park it at Walmart. More details and accommodations available at www.visitbrookingssd.com

WINTER

You will not want to leave your big puffy coat at home. We know midwestern winters can be intimidating, but if you bundle up just right you learn to embrace the chill.

Take an adventure in Brookings, just don’t forget to pack the essentials. A lot can happen in four seasons, here is a list of must haves for your next Brookings adventure:

SPRING

Dress in layers because the spring weather can be quite unpredictable. As the ground begins to defrost and the rainy days start coming, you can feel the anticipation in the community of those beloved warmer months.

SUMMER

A bathing suit and some sunscreen are a must during the summer months. The second the weather warms up enough for a dip in the lake, the out-of-office replies go on. We never know how long summer will last, so we all take advantage of every sunny day.

FALL

Bring your game face. Fall sports dominate our community and we wouldn’t have it any other way. From tailgating to potlucks, we will show you a good time on Jackrabbit turf.

DON’T MISS THE BROOKINGS SUMMER ARTS FESTIVAL

South Dakota’s premiere juried arts festival garners over 200 artists from across the nation to fill the grassy areas of Pioneer Park. Representing 15 different disciplines of art, 38 different ethnic and gourmet food booths, historic displays, and entertainment it can seem hard to tackle; here are some pro tips to pack in as much art into two days as possible.

Wear comfortable shoes. You’ll be walking A LOT!

Be prepared for weather. July is notoriously hot and humid, with the occasional rainstorm.

Consider eating earlier or later. To beat the lines and peak times.

Bring a large bag for carrying all of your finds. Or plan multiple trips to the car.

Try all the kettle corn booths. It’s like a right of passage to becoming a festival expert.

Leave your pets at home The festival is an overwhelming environment for animals, leave your furry friend in the A/C. Certified service animals are permitted.

Two words: Turkey Leg. You have not experienced the festival until you have had one. #turkeyleg

Shuttles are available. Take the easy way in by hitching a ride. Free shuttle buses drop you off at the main entrance.

Take and A/C Break. Grab a pint and shop local in downtown Brookings, where the cool air is always on.

Bring a smile. And enjoy the art, food, and entertainment at Pioneer Park.

SDSU Dairy Bar

This destination is the very definition of a sweet treat. The SDSU Dairy bar has over 60 different fla vors all curated by South Dakota State University students in the Davis Dairy Plant located on campus just off Medary Avenue. And of course, a visit to the dairy bar is not complete without trying the famous Cookies ‘n Cream ice cream.

Brookings County Outdoor Adventure Center

With two top quality indoor ranges (firearm and ar chery), Brookings County Outdoor Adventure Center is the perfect destination to safely practice shooting. The BCOAC is also home to the SDSU Extension, 4-H offices, and the Game Fish & Parks office. The Game Fish & Parks office hosts several programs through out the year including a Hunting Safe Program.

Nick’s Hamburger Shop

Nick’s Hamburger Shop has been a Brookings staple since 1929. This is by far the tastiest destination on the tour with mouthwatering sliders you can buy by the bagful. It truly feels like a blast from the past the moment you step inside the vintage style diner.

Brookings Arts Council

The Brookings Arts Council has been educating and entertaining the Brookings community with art for nearly 40 years. This destination will intro duce you to juried art and photography exhibitions from a variety of regional artists. Stop at the BAC to find information about the sculptures, murals, and community art collectives around the Brook ings community.

Children’s Museum of South Dakota

Greet a life-size T. rex and climb the clouds. Harvest food and move it from farm to market. This is a sample of the hands-on activities ready to spark your imagination at the Children’s Museum of South Dakota.

With both indoor and outdoor exhibits, you can play along all year long! Splash in a stream, build a house, and play along on the wide-open South Dakota prairie. Walk down KidStreet where you can deliver the mail, stop at the veterinarian office, and even fix a car.

Located in Downtown Brookings, the Children’s Museum of South Dakota is the perfect stop for your family vacation. a great outing for school field trips, and a playful spot to host a birthday party.

Create lasting memories for children AND grown-ups. With 5,000 interactive parts and 550 books, the museum supports a love of lifelong learning through play, creativity, and discovery.

McCrory Gardens

McCrory Gardens and the South Dakota State Arboretum are botanical gardens and an arbo retum located on the South Dakota State University campus. McCrory Gardens has over 25 acres of formal display gardens and 45 acres of arboretum featuring hundreds of different flowers, trees, shrubs, and grasses in harmonious settings to display, educate, and further the development of new varieties. Ongoing research continues to provide new information to the scientific community and the public on the introduction, cultivation, and arrangement of na tive and domesticated plants. McCrory Gardens is named in honor of Professor S. A. McCrory, head of SDSU’s horticulture department from 1947 until his death in 1964.

In 2012, the Education & Visitor Center was constructed. Its purpose: to provide a beginning point for entering the formal botanical gardens. It serves as a welcoming environment to visitors from across the state, the region, the country and the world. The EVC is a one-of-akind venue to host both private and public events. The Great Hall provides rental clients and their guests a room with a view, all year-round. If you have a reason to gather, McCrory has a unique setting to share with you.

South Dakota Art Museum

South Dakota Art Museum visitors are regularly delighted to find a world-class art museum right here in Brookings. Spacious, uncrowded galleries filled with engaging exhibitions, ac tivities for kids, and free admission make the museum a frequent destination for Brookings locals and visitors from across the country. The Museum Store attracts visitors year-round with original paintings, pottery, and jewelry by local and regional artists as well as exceptional selections of books, beads, and gifts. The museum also hosts free public artist talks, recep tions, group tours, and family artmaking workshops throughout the year.

The museum is best known for its renowned collection of artworks by artists with ties to South Dakota, including acclaimed painter Harvey Dunn and noted Native American artists such as Oscar Howe and Arthur Amiotte, as well as many emerging Native artists.

In naming the South Dakota Art Museum one of America’s 20 Best Galleries and Museums, the American Art Awards notes the variety and quality of the museum’s exhibitions drawn from its strong permanent collections and from artists and traveling exhibits from beyond South Dakota. “South Dakota Art Museum has excelled in delivering everything a top museum can — and consistently surpasses expectations.”

South Dakota Agricultural Heritage Museum

Immerse yourself in one of South Dakota’s top industries, agriculture. The South Dakota Agri cultural Heritage Museum will inspire a passion for the diverse history, culture, and science of agriculture in our state. Explore how important agriculture is in our daily lives. This museum serves all ages and admission is always free.

Bring in the kiddos and teach them how to milk a cow or how our food gets harvested into grain bins. Let them be imaginative with their own farmer’s market and let them collect all the chicken eggs from the coop. The Ag-ploration exhibit is always open and ready for the next little farmer to come play.

Walk through exhibits which take you back in time to educate you on South Dakota’s history and future. The exhibits switch periodically which means there is always something new to explore. The gift shop offers a store front for many local farmers who produce high quality products in South Dakota.

OUTDOOR EXPLORATION

McCrory Gardens is a beautiful botanical garden and arboretum maintained by South Dakota State University. It features some of the most eye-catching formal landscapes in Brook ings – perfect for an afternoon stroll. After roaming through the gar dens, head over to Dakota Nature Park to see all of the natural wonders South Dakota has to offer. Hike the trails, go fishing and wpaddle boating, and more.

ARTISTIC VISIONS

The South Dakota Art Museum is a premiere spot to enjoy the artistic legacy of South Dakota and beyond. The museum’s collection of more than 7,000 objects features paintings, drawings, photographs, sculptures, textiles, and ceramics. Highlights include works by Harvey Dunn and Paul Goble, Marghab linens, and traditional and contemporary Native American art. From there, pay a visit to the Brookings Arts Council to enjoy the ever-changing exhibits, classes, and workshops with local artists and events throughout the year.

LEARN WITH YOUR LITTLE ONES

The Children’s Museum of South Dakota invites families to explore their creativity with exhibits such as a market, an art studio, a car shop and much more. Likewise, the South Dakota Agricultural Heritage Museum provides opportunities for hands-on learning with your little ones. Walk back into time with the history of South Dakota agriculture and stop upstairs to learn about tending to livestock. You can even milk a cow!

If you’re in the mood for a night out on the town, the Wild Hare is a sports bar/nightclub with a wrap-around bar, dance floor, and game rooms. When looking for a place to relax after a busy day, try Jim’s Tap. A medieval themed bar with a cozy fireplace out back, it’s a perfect place to unwind.

BROOKINGS MARATHON

MAY 13

One of a kind is something Brookings does well. We have community events spanning multiple interests and all seasons, from the Brookings Marathon at the beginning of summer to Garden Glow in winter. Come find the best fun and unique experience for your taste.

The Brookings Marathon includes a marathon, half marathon, marathon relay, and typically takes place in May. The route features multiple places to watch and cheer on the runners. BROOKINGS SUMMER ARTS FESTIVAL

JULY 8 & 9

The Brookings Summer Arts Festival is a special occasion for art lovers of all ages. The event, scheduled for July 8-9, 2023, attracts a myriad of artists from across the country to Pioneer Park. Artists bring their one-of-a-kind creations, while musicians play to entertain the crowds. The center of the park focuses on fun children’s activi ties. 5 THURSDAYS JULY – AUGUST

Downtown at Sundown draws Brookings locals, college students, and visitors. HOBO DAY

OCTOBER 14

South Dakota State University’s homecoming is by far the biggest annual event in Brookings. Hobo Day traditionally takes place in mid to late October. The event draws an estimated 20,000 students, alumni, sports fans, locals, and visitors for the parade and football game. GARDEN GLOW

1ST SATURDAY OF DECEMBER – JANUARY 6

Garden Glow, a holiday light show, takes place at McCrory Gardens. The garden becomes an immersive wonderland. The holiday theme stays the same, with new features added every year. The event typically runs from the first Saturday of De cember to Jan. 6. Hours are 6 to 9 p.m.nightly, except Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. A new addition to downtown Brookings is the poetry walk. Around three blocks in length, the walk features works by seven South Dakota poets laureate. SKINNER’S PUB PATIO

Looking for a quiet place to enjoy your favorite beverage? Try the patio at Skinner’s Pub. Nestled near the back exit, this secluded space allows patrons to relax in ample shade from surrounding trees. When the weather cools off, you can bask in the warmth of portable heaters.

OIL & VINEGAR ROOM AT THE PHEASANT

The Pheasant Restaurant and Lounge offers unique local cuisine to visitors looking to savor some authentic South Dakota flavor. Known for top-notch food and service, The Pheasant also maintains a collection of over 40 fresh olive oils and balsamic vinegars. The tasting bar lets guests sample before purchasing their favorites to take home.

SEXAUER DOG PARK

Visiting Brookings and need a place for your pup to burn off some energy? Try the new dog park at Sexauer Park. The park is located on a little over 2 acres of land which allows your pet to interact with other dogs, get a cool drink of water, and enjoy the various play areas available.

TEE’D OFF

Tee’d Off provides the community year-round access to its favorite sports. Enjoy golf and sports simulation games along with a cold beer and snacks. On game days for the SDSU Jackrabbits and national football, hockey, and baseball teams, come in and watch the action on the simulator screensthen play your favorite sport during breaks.

SOLEMN SIGHT

ON THE WEST SIDE OF BROOKINGS

Since its dedication over 20 years ago, the Brookings County Veterans Memorial Park celebrates both wellknown national figures and those only remembered by family and friends. It has been the site of annual services hosted by cadets from SDSU’s Air Force ROTC program to honor our veterans. Two honor guards patrol the memo rial for 24 hours on Veterans Day to remember those who lost their lives. As part of the annual POW/MIA run, cadets finish at the memorial after running over 55 miles from the Sioux Falls Veterans Memorial.

Lush grasses and calm waters make it a picturesque place to walk and reflect. The memorial is known as one of the most breathtaking monuments in the area. The 2-acre site features a pond, walking trails and a monument to all five branches of our nation’s service members. Visitors can take a moment to acknowledge the sacrifices veterans have made for their families and the country.

Anyone connected to the military can see themselves in this memorial. Veterans and families can remember the people they met and those who didn’t come home. The military values which shaped who these people were can be felt while gazing at the engraved stone beneath the white arches.

These memorials serve as historical markers and inspira tions at the same time. As the call of duty sounded, our veterans answered and fought for our country. Current enlistees carry on the caring and selfless spirit of our past veterans. Memorials like this teach people the importance of respecting and remembering those who have died, fought, participated, or suffered during past conflicts. This memorial is dedicated to all those Americans who have built the foundations of what the United States of Ameri ca is about, built on service and honor by sacrifice.

5 FREE THINGS TO DO

Looking for a way to have a wonderful time but don’t want to empty your wallet? Brookings has you covered with these free activities.

1. THE BROOKINGS FARMERS MARKET

The Brookings Farmers Market is a nonprofit organization created for local producers and farmers to showcase fruits, vegetables, flowers, and crafts. The Farmers Market is located on the 300th block of Sixth Avenue (between the library and the courthouse) every Saturday, from May through October.. The market also presents free yoga classes.

2. EPONYMOUS BREWING CO. AND WOODEN LEGS BREWERY

Eponymous Brewing Co. and Wooden Legs Brewery, both located in down town, regularly host free activities. Eponymous provides no buy-in bingo every other Wednesday evening - an amazing way to break up the week. All ages are welcome, but you must be 21 and older to order a pint. Test your wits at Wooden Legs during Trivia Tuesday for the chance to win some fun prizes while sampling a local brew.

3. DISC GOLF ANYONE?

Brookings boasts two parks where disc golfers can enjoy a day outdoors. Lar son Park’s Disc Golf Course was redesigned in 2020 with a new 20-hole layout and features tee pads, multiple pin placements, and impressive views of the park and the community. The SDSU Golf Disc Park on the east side of campus has 18 easy to navigate holes, with water features and tall grass hazards for the more accomplished players.

4. HIT THE TRAILS

Bring your bike to Brookings and ride the 22-mile Allyn Frerichs Trail system, which connects parks, schools and recreational centers throughout the commu nity. The League of America Bicyclists has named Brookings as a Bronze Bicycle Friendly Community in recognition of the city’s commitment to improving bicycle conditions, offering educational programs, and promoting the bicycle network.

5. SELF-GUIDED WALKING TOURS

Brookings Historical Preservation Commission provides resources for self-guid ed walking tours of the community’s oldest commercial buildings and homes. Whether you go on foot or in the comfort of your car, be ready to appreciate the timeless character of these structures.

RECREATION

Our glacial lakes and wide open landscapes are the perfect combo for ultimate relaxation and exploration. Bring your sunglasses for epic sunrises and sunsets across our Midwestern skies.

DAKOTA NATURE PARK & LARSON NATURE CENTER

What was once an old landfill is now a 135-acre multi-purpose park and one of our community’s most popular attrac tions. Dakota Nature Park is designed as a destination, featuring a string of ponds, fishing dock, and bike trails. Its phi losophy is a place where nature prevails and all humans are guests.

The Larson Nature Center is located in the park and serves as the rental hub for outdoor gear. It’s also a gathering place for special events and educational programming. In the winter months, staff keeps a cozy fire going to welcome guests.

ADVENTURE CENTER

Known around the country for its Olympic-length archery range, the Brookings County Outdoor Adventure Center (BCOAC) is a hunter’s haven. It’s also an educational facility to teach proper gun safety. The archery range is great for family reunions and casual get togethers. Anyone can learn how to use a bow and arrow! The BCOAC is also home to SDSU Extension, 4H, and South Dakota Game, Fish, and Parks.

BIKE FRIENDLY

SINGLE TRACK TRAIL & PUMP PARK

The Single Track Trail and Pump Park were designed by BMX crews and the Brookings Mountain Biking Association. The trail itself features different textures, elevations, quick turns, switchbacks, and jumps. The whole system allows riders of all ages to give it a shot and sharpen their skills. The trail is single direction and has two entrance points, one from the Pump Park and one from the Southbrook Softball Complex south west corner parking lot.

The Pump Park is a continuous loop of dirt berms and rollers, designed for you to ride without pedaling. It features three different loops, suited for all ages and abilities. It’s a great place for beginners to learn and experts to expand their skills

BROOKINGS COMMUNITY BAND

PRESENTS A SUMMERTIME STAPLE

Live from under the bandshell, the Brookings Com munity Band fills Pioneer Park weekly with rhythmic melodies during the months of June and July. This summertime staple brings together old and new friends for an enjoyable evening of music and cama raderie.

“It’s truly Americana at its finest,” David Reynolds, director of the band for the past 17 years said. “This is what life in the Midwest is all about – everyone com ing together at the park, listening to live music and having a great time doing it.”

The band performs seven concerts each summer. All concerts are free, with complimentary snacks such as fresh watermelon slices or fudge brownies.

The 80-plus member band begins practice in May and presents about a dozen pieces for every per formance. Every concert has a set list matching the week’s theme from “Broadway Comes to Brookings” to “Jukebox Jamboree.” The musical variety appeals to various ages, ensuring everyone who attends hears something they will enjoy.

“We always play music that will entertain the audi ence,” Reynolds said. “We promise attendees will leave the concert humming something.”

One of the most popular activities at concerts is the children’s march. Kids are invited to wear old hats from The Pride of the Dakotas, South Dakota State University’s marching band, and parade to the music of John Philip Sousa or Karl King.

This year, the band celebrates its 39th anniversary in its current iteration. Reynolds notes evidence of a community band dating back to the earliest days of Brookings, when small ensembles began playing on the courthouse lawn in the 1890s.

Musicians, community members and visitors all value the band and are happy to continue appreciating live music together.

“It’s a tradition – one we hope will remain in the Brookings Community for many, many years,” Reyn olds said.

Downtown Brookings is home to two of the best pizza joints in town. Pizza King, the town’s first pizza restau rant, has been pulling pizzas out of the oven since 1961. George’s Pizza is a college student favorite, catering to the city’s lively night life. The restaurant was established in 1971 and has slowly evolved into the place we know today.

Pizza King takes its customers into a flashback in history to the ’50s rock ’n’ roll era with original Buddy Holly pho tographs on the walls. Current owner Shannon Brown ex plained the connection to Holly, who was killed in a plane crash along with Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper. “My dad was friends with the photographer who took these photos two weeks before the plane crash.”

ROOT FOR THE HOME TEAM

Everyone loves an afternoon of tailgating and cheering on SDSU football or watching women’s basketball win the Women’s National Invitation Tournament. True Jackrabbit fans find all kinds of ways to show their spirit and support. Here are three more teams to cheer on throughout the year.

SDSU WRESTLING: The season runs from Nov. 12 to March 18. While competing at Frost Arena, the Jacks will have seven home matches with one home tournament. The Jacks have been ranked top 25 in the country for the last 3 years and reside in the Big XII Conference. Despite construction at Frost Arena, SDSU Athletics keeps an electrifying atmosphere with thousands of people in attendance.

SDSU SOFTBALL: Playing from February to May, the Jacks have 40plus games to watch. Over the last few years, SDSU Softball has made appearanc es in the NCAA tournament. With so many games throughout the season, women’s softball brings entertainment to its fans with home run after home run. With a record-breaking 76 home runs in 2022, the Jacks know how to keep you on the edge of your seat.

SDSU VOLLEYBALL: The Jacks play from August through November with postseason going into December. With the hiring of new head coach Dan Georgalas in 2019, SDSU volleyball has made big strides. Over the last 10 years, SDSU has only had three winning seasons, with the two most dominant coming under Georgalass coaching. In October 2022, the Jacks set an attendance re cord of 1,524 against University of South Dakota.

With 19 sports competing at the NCAA Division I level, the Jackrabbits have claimed 34 regular and postseason league championships since 2009-2010 and these numbers will only increase. There’s plenty to cheer for all year in Brook ings. SDSU’s sports teams are constantly making history and climbing their way to the top.

ADVICE TO A TO YOUNGER ME

Take a deep breath. Enjoy every milestone, like Move-In Day and Rush Week. Our college experience won’t go exactly how we expect it to, but our time will be better than expected.

Through this journey, you have to be unapologetically you because this is how we find our people - the people who will get us through difficult times and the people we enjoy sensational times with, like ESPN’s “College GameDay.”

Most important, you will find our true passion in these years. We are only here for four years. We have to do what is best for us and do it right away so we do not waste a single moment. So when you knew our first major was not for us, change it right away rather than waiting until our sophomore year like I did.

What I wish I could’ve done differently for us is slow down and enjoy each mo ment of college. Slow down and enjoy every moment that leads us to where we want to be. Everything will fall into place. Enjoy the steps leading to the now. We will never get to relive the absolute chaos of our first Hobo Day so live that night like it will never happen again. Meet everyone you can during Move-In weekend because everyone is looking to make friends and is just as nervous as you are.

The biggest lesson I have learned is to make the most of our college experience. You have to enjoy the highs and embrace the lows as this is what builds your character. Not every week will be exciting, like when we beat North Dakota State University that Saturday, but we will learn to respect the stress of finals, the grind of long days with labs, and late-night paper writing. In the end, love it all.

FOUR THINGS I WISH I COULD TELL MY YOUNGER SELF

One of the biggest things I wish I had learned as an incoming freshman is that it’s OK to make new friends. College is all about meeting new people, and sometimes it’s easier just to hang out with people from high school who attend the same university as you, but it’s OK if you don’t. Likewise, it’s not the end of the world if you drift from the people you are friends with your first semester. You’ll keep meeting new people at SDSU and find your home away from home.

The community of Brookings offers many different ways to get out into town and find something you love, which is one thing I wish I had known my freshman year. As a college town, Brookings has a variety of options for having fun on a budget. If you’re a film fanatic, Brookings Cinema 8 offers tickets to all shows on Tuesdays for $5, from daytime matinees to evening showings.

If you love bowling, you should definitely check out The Lanes. Brookings’ local bowling alley is another fantastic spot to have fun without breaking the bank. On Monday nights after 9 p.m., you can bowl for as long as you want for $5. That fee also covers shoe rental. If you want to try out Spark Bowling, The Lanes offers a similar deal, but for a fee of $10. The bowling alley is open until midnight every night, which makes it the perfect place for a late-night excursion with your friends.

Coming from a large city, it was a concern of mine that there wouldn’t be a whole lot to do, but it was a relief to realize my concern was unnecessary. Brookings County offers plenty of other things to do outside the city, such as visiting Lake Campbell or Poinsett. If you feel the need to explore the rest of South Dakota, Brookings is at the corner of U.S. Highway 14 and Interstate 29, which makes it easy to take road trips with your friends on weekends and breaks.

“LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, THE PRIDE IS BACK!”

No game day is complete without the illustrious sounds of tradition, loyalty, and spirit a marching band can bring. South Dakota State University boasts one of the best collegiate bands in the nation. The best-known band on campus is The Pride of the Dakotas, which had over 340 students as part of its 132nd iteration in 2022.

The Pride, as the band is more commonly referred to, is known as the true heart of the game day atmosphere. For over 130 years, the Pride has been a part of momentous events – from presidential inaugural parades in 1981 and 1997, the 2003 and 2008 Tournament of Roses parades, NFL games, and most recently, the 2022 Macy’s Thanks giving Day Parade.

Kevin Kessler, director of athletic bands, has been involved with the Pride since 1993, when he marched as a student. He has led the group since 2015. “The family atmosphere,

building lifetime friendships and making memories from game day to Macy’s are what makes the Pride so special,” he said.

Levi Gebhard, a second-year Pride member, has a deep appreciation for his involvement with such an impactful group. “I wanted to be a part of something special for the university and the Pride was always something that got me excited when I knew I was coming to SDSU,” he said. For the future, Gebhard is excited to continue building his friendships and marching on with the Pride for the next few years he is on campus.

The Pride is open to all SDSU students and membership ranges across any academic major, but auditions are re quired for specific assignments such as the drumline and drum major positions. You can watch the Pride each fall at Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium.

It is easy to be a part of a community at South Da kota State, with over 200 clubs, activities, and in tramural sports. These campus favorites, including those mentioned here, provide a sense of together ness and unity through the blue and gold.

The Taylor Swift Society is the newest addition to campus and has already amassed a following of Swifties. Student fans of the star drew inspiration from similar organizations at schools across the country and knew they had to create their own for SDSU. The approximately 80 members share a love for Swift and bond through biweekly meetings and on-campus activities such as trivia, concert view ings, and lyric analysis.

For 100 years, Little International has cultivated community as the largest two-day, student-run live stock exposition in the nation. Student staff mem bers share a passion for the agricultural industry and create their own family through the monthslong planning process. Students of all backgrounds can exhibit a chosen livestock species as novices

or experienced showpeople. After two weeks of working with their animals, exhibitors are judged on showmanship and fitting. Little International provides a unique opportunity to learn new skills, exhibit livestock, and participate in a timeless tra dition.

The Intramural Sports Program fosters a welcom ing atmosphere for students and community mem bers to compete, no athletic experience necessary. Broomball is one of several activities in the Intra mural Sports program. Players compete on ice and attempt to score by sweeping a ball into nets us ing an aluminum stick or “broom.” Through count less hours of practice and matches, teams become like family and competition fades into a stress-free environment. The fast pace of broomball also pro vides an exciting atmosphere for spectators who can attend competitions at no cost.

WHY BROOKINGS?

Over the last couple of years, Brookings has experienced a steady influx of new residents. People from all over the country have chosen Brookings as their new home. John Thompson, who began working as the public works direc tor for the City of Brookings in 2022, has a story similar to others who have chosen to join the community. Previous ly, Thompson held various county administrator positions while working in Clovis, California, for 15 years.

Thompson grew up about 30 miles from Brookings in Hendricks, Minnesota, and his wife is from Aurora. He said because they are originally from the Midwest, he and his wife understand the people and the culture of the area. “We know all that, and we love that,” he said.

Thompson learned of the job opening in May 2022 and traveled to South Dakota to meet with the team. “I love their mission, vision, value, and I love their core traits. So, the foundation is really strong here.” As public works di rector, he oversees projects such as landfills, streets, and engineering. The purpose of the public works team is to “serve the public,” he said. “That’s why we’re here.”

GOATS, GARDENS AND GRAPES:

His family enjoys the opportuni ties Brookings provides, such as recreational activities. Thomp son says they get people out of the house and create a commu nity feel he said.

A week after the family’s move to Brookings, a local church youth group held an event to welcome Thomp son’s daughter. Since then, she has formed a group of friends she can explore her new home with. Thompson’s son has settled in and found a job working for a local man ufacturing company.

Thompson described Brookings as welcoming, friendly, and safe. “Many people will lift a finger or wave to you as you pass them.” In the close-knit and welcoming com munity, “you get to know a lot of people, and it provides better satisfaction,” he said.

Thompson was amazed by how the area has grown over the last 30 years.. Among the changes, one thing remains the same. Brookings is a “community with great people,” he said.

AHMED AZZAB is a third-year journalism major, with minors in public relations, digital & social media, and communication studies. Ahmed is from the Minneap olis area and is KSDJ’s programming director for the 2022-2023 year.

COLETTE GANNON is a senior public relations ma jor and digital & social media minor from Inver Grove Heights, MN. In her free time, she enjoys reading and traveling. She also prioritizes being active, with her fa vorite activities including yoga and cycling.

MARA WHEATON is a public relations major with a double minor in retail merchandising and design stud ies, from Mankato, MN. In her free time, Wheaton en joys reading, cooking and spending time outdoors. During her time at SDSU, she has been involved with The Collegian and The Fashion and Apparel Club.

MILDRED YOUNG Mildred Young is an Agriculture Communications student from Arlington, Nebraska. When she is not studying the world of communica tions Mildred can be found throwing for the Jackrabbit Track and Field team and being a cadet in the Air Force ROTC program on campus.

REBEKAH WHITE Rebekah White is an agriculture communications and agriculture leadership double major working towards becoming a parliamentarian. She was born in Moscow, Idaho and loves to read in her spare time.

CORA COOK is a third-year student at South Dakota State University majoring in agricultural communica tions with minors in ag marketing and public relations. When she is not in class you can find Cora participating in Country Swing Dance Club, Collegiate 4-H, and Little International, as well as being a community assistant for housing and residential life.

EMILY MATEJKA is an agricultural communications ma jor from Sherburn, Minnesota. She developed a love for agriculture on her family’s farm and now stays active in organizations such as CAFES Ambassadors and Colle giate Farm Bureau. Emily’s passion lies in agriculture, and she hopes to pursue a career in agronomical sales.

EZRA REVOIR is an advertising major with market ing and public relations minors from Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He is involved in Pi Kappa Alpha Men’s Fra ternity and enjoys hunting, fishing and videography. Post-graduation, he would want to work in the outdoor marketing industry.

JORDAN JOHNSON is a double major in agriculture communications and agriculture leadership with a mi nor in marketing. Johnson was raised on her family farm (Johnson Corner Cattle) located in Fort Dodge, IA. On her farm is where she found her passions for cattle, pho tography, and promoting the agricultural industry.

KARMEN SPERR is an Agriculture Communications and Agriculture Leadership major at South Dakota State Uni versity. She grew up in Donnelly, MN and is extremely passionate about agriculture. She enjoys classes and ex periences where she can learn how to be a better com municator and advocate for agriculture. Karmen is in volved with Little International, Sigma Alpha, Swine Club, and CAFES Ambassadors at SDSU.

LUCIA FRIAS is a recent graduate with a bachelor’s de gree in public relations with minors in journalism and social media from SDSU. She is originally from Lima, Peru. She loves creating social media content and mar keting for her family business back in Peru.

REGEN WIEDERRICH is a communication studies major with minors in leadership and management of non-profit organizations, public relations, and history from Sioux Falls, SD. Regen enjoys spending his time cheering on the Jackrabbits and was the 2022 Hobo Day Grand Pooba..

SAMANTHA SCHOENBAUER is an agriculture com munications major from Hamburg, Minnesota. When not in class, she enjoys spending time with family and friends, photography and co-managing her family’s purebred Shorthorn cow/calf operation.

SYDNEY MITCHELL is a recent agriculture communica tions graduate from South Dakota State University. She is from Elysian, Minnesota and has a goal of sharing the story of agriculture. On campus, she was involved in Dairy Club, the Gamma Sigma Delta Honor Society of Agriculture, Collegiate 4-H, Agricultural Communi cators of Tomorrow and more.

SYDNEY SEDLACEK is a communication studies major with double minors in events & facilities administration and public relations, from Yankton, SD. She is currently the Business Operations Intern for the Brookings Area Chamber of Commerce and loves to spend time with family and friends.

MAGGIE MOLITOR is a junior majoring in agriculture communications and dairy production. Growing up on a dairy farm, Maggie found her love for agriculture ad vocacy. She hopes to go back to her family’s dairy farm while continuing to promote the industry through jour nalism. On campus, she is involved in Dairy Club, Sigma Alpha and Little International.

TAYLOR STORBAKKEN is a public relations major at SDSU, from Veblen, South Dakota. She is involved in the Lead State leadership program, PR & AD Club, Country Swing Dance Club, and is a podcast host for Coffee with COJO. Some of Taylor’s favorite things are meeting new people, going to the gym and simply chatting with friends.
