Welcome to Flandreau Our dynamic and energetic community is the county seat for Moody County and this year we are celebrating our Sesquicentennial! For 150 years Flandreau has been a hub of economic activity in the area and the home of the Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe. We have a great small town atmosphere where businesses and families are able to grow and thrive and we’re conveniently located in east-central South Dakota. As a life-long resident of Flandreau, and in my second term as mayor, I’ve seen many changes in our community, but the amenities that make our little city such a great place to live, are still here. We have modern schools and health care facilities; beautiful parks; a wonderful aquatic center; a thriving local arts scene; a spacious community resource center and public library; and a lively Boys & Girls Club. And we are continuing the upgrades of public infrastructure which makes Flandreau even more appealing to businesses

and residents. The quality that really sets Flandreau apart is the friendly, inclusive and big-hearted attitude of our hard-working people. Many of those people have worked hard in the past couple of years to plan and pay for all the activities of our Sesquicentennial celebration and the accompanying All-School Reunion at Flandreau High School. To them, I say, “Thank you for all you do for our city and great job!” On behalf of the City of Flandreau, I invite you to take a closer look at our community, whether you’re here for a visit or to call this home, we welcome you! Mayor Mark Bonrud

Welcome Whether you’ve always called Flandreau home, have moved here (or moved back like me), or are in town for a short time, you’ll find that we have much to offer those who come into our community. Flandreau boasts many locally owned businesses as well as corporate entities with stores in Flandreau. We also have companies who manufacture goods or provide services to people in town, the region and across the country. And the City has a long partnership with the Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe, which operates the Royal River Casino and Motel. We offer many opportunities for outdoor recreation including bicycling, golfing, hunting, cross country snow skiing and many activities along the Big Sioux River such as fishing, canoeing, camping and snowmobiling. Our well-kept parks and trails and fantastic aquatic center offer many hours of recreation and fun for all ages.

Flandreau has great schools and a spacious Boys & Girls Club and we’re fortunate to have a variety of health care options available in town including a recently updated hospital and clinic. Several Christian denominations have churches in Flandreau and are active with events throughout the year and the local arts community is full of creative people willing to share their talents with you. If you’re still looking for things to do mark your calendar with reminders of the many city-wide celebrations we host every year. On behalf of the City of Flandreau, I welcome you and invite you to stop at our offices at 1005 W. Elm Avenue if you have questions about our friendly city. City Administrator Jeff Pederson

Flandreau Indian School The Flandreau Indian School’s vision is that students will eventually take their rightful place as participating members of their communities. It was established in 1872 as a missionary school for the children of Sioux Indians who had settled near the current city. In 1890 Congress appropriated funding for the purchase of land and the construction of an industrial school on the north edge of Flandreau. The grades 9-12 boarding school educates 250-350 students each year from Native American tribes of the western states. Class offerings include many technical areas, which

train students in a variety of vocational skills. The school provides a safe and healthy environment, which is disciplined by adherence to cultural values and practices. Many students participate in extra-curricular activities and regularly compete against or cooperate with students from other schools in the region. The school is fully funded by the Bureau of Indian Education under the U.S. Department of the Interior. For more information about Flandreau Indian School, call 997.3773 or 800.942.1647 or visit flandreauindianeducation.com.
