Online On the Courses Rise More than 30 percent of total higher education students will take at least one online college course this year. Why so popular? Many students cite the convenience of being able to take online courses when their schedule permits instead of being required to show up to class at a certain time. Affordability can also be a driving force. While online courses are generally the same price as in-class options, you can save money on gas and even textbooks if your curriculum is all computer-based and are available any time of day wherever you are in the world. BEING SUCCESSFUL Just because on-line education is hitting its popularity peak doesn’t meant it’s easy to pass a digital course or degree program. Online courses are administered by on-campus professors, but students are accountable for whether or not the coursework gets done. Continued on page 44

COURSES SDSU provides courses towards a Bachelor’s degree in Early Education and Care, General Studies, Geography, Interdisciplinary Studies, Medical Laboratory Science, Nursing and Sociology. Master’s degree courses include Chemistry, Educational Administration, Public Health, Sociology and more. Certificate programs are available in Family Financial Planning, Financial and Housing Counseling and Merchandising.

A few tips to remember when taking an on-line course: • Keep in touch: Just because you’re behind a computer doesn’t mean you should lose contact with your university faculty. Email and call your teacher. Meet with classmates. The more connected you remain, the more engaged you will be in your work. • Save your work: This seems like a simple step, but it is often overlooked by students. Never delete files off of your computer just because you’ve uploaded them into your college’s on-line platform. System crashes or upload errors can happen, so it’s best to be prepared with an external hard drive full of your key documents, reports and papers.

Things to Know
1. Cheating isn’t worth the risk. This applies to tests and relationships. 2. Food is expensive. All food. Be forewarned. Use the meal plan.
10. Don’t fully depend on your advisor. Ultimately, it’s up to you to understand where you are in your program.
3. You will have no money. You have no idea how much living with your parents saves you.
11. Go to the review sessions. This is where professors reveal what you should focus on (read: what will be on the exam).
4. Learn where the “specials” are. Figure out where the food specials are and make the rounds.
12. Plan communication with your parents. Set up a weekly time to chat so they can catch up on your life.
5. You have the time. Own how you choose to use your time.
13. Companies are already looking at you. Keep this in mind as you post about Friday night.
6. Avoid extensions. Procrastinators will procrastinate, no matter the deadline. 7. You will get lonely. 8. You will get bored. 9. You don’t have to buy all your books. Learn which books to buy and which to borrow or rent.
50
14. University health centers are one of the best healthcare options for the price. Take advantage of $6 teeth cleanings while you have them. 15 Get to the gym. You won’t want to. You will make excuses. But you have access to stateof-the-art equipment that, once you’ve graduated, you won’t have without an expensive gym membership.

Adopt Reusable Bag Practices Take reusable bags to the grocery store instead of opting for paper or plastic. It’s wasteful and unnecessary – and several bags with every grocery trip can add up to a whole lot of garbage over a lifetime. Walk or bike Leave the car in its parking spot and walk or bike to nearby events. It’s good exercise and good for the planet as well. Take e-notes Bring a tablet or laptop to class and take electronic notes. This cuts back on paper usage and will enable you to have all notes in a compact file. Nix Bottled Water Reuse old water bottles or purchase water bottles that you can refill instead of tossing out a new bottle every time you need to quench your thirst. Recycle By now, this should be a no-brainer. When you’re able, recycle. Whether it’s paper products, plastics or upcycling old items, it’s important to think about which trash can be saved from a landfill. Buy Less or Borrow Only buy what you actually need. In a consumer culture, it’s easy to fall into overbuying habits. If you only purchase what’s necessary, you’ll not only be going green but saving green as well.
