A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR
MAYA HAYUK
BOLD DOES NOT MEAN “STRONG” NOR DOES IT MEAN “LOUD” OR “GUTSY”. BUT SOMETHING SUBTLER WHICH EMBODIES ALL OF THOSE THINGS ALL TIED TOGETHER IN A NEAT LITTLE PUNCH OF A PACKAGE. BOLD WILL MAKE YOU TURN YOUR HEAD TO SEE IT. Bold requires confidence. It requires the attitude of: “I look like I don’t give a sh*t because I don’t”. However, it’s not boorish. It does have some eloquence to it. Some forethought. It’s not an impulsive decision to be wild and ridiculous. That would be ridiculous. Rather, it’s calculated, it’s product of the gut and brain working in congress. That’s why bold is so delicate, it’s easy to overshoot. There’s a science to bold and that’s what makes it so special when it’s done right. Bold is a necessity in Brooklyn if you want to survive. Bold gets things done. Bold helps us get through the fits of winter. In this issue we present some of our favorite examples of boldness to inspire you through the dark days of the season.
Maya Hayuks’ paintings and murals has been celebrated internationally for years yet perhaps it took last summer’s Bowery wall mural to cement her local celeb status in among her fellow New Yorkers. There’s no denying that the wall will stop you in your tracks with it’s bold strokes and bold colors. What’s impressive about it is how universally regarded it was- I don’t think I passed by it once when there wasn’t at least one person with their phone camera out snapping away- it’s undeniably ‘cool’? We put a slice of it on our cover. Maya invited us into her studio which was bursting with paintings she’s about to ship to Europe for a show. The work was almost overwhelming and the colors were completely intoxicating against the
white white floor full of paint buckets. Maya was dressed in all black and showed us how she likes to sit on the paint buckets and meditate to draw inspiration during painting sessions. It made sense that she would channel her work this way there is a calm organization to her work which is why I think they are so successful. While chatting, she mentioned the character Sabina from the book Unbearable Lightness of Being and we thought it would be fun to photograph her as Sabina. Sabina is the strong (dare I say bold) mistress of Tomas who juxtaposes his mousy wife Tereza. Sabina is an artist and a seductress and a leader. So I’m sure it wasn’t too much of a stretch for Maya to get into character.

JILLY BALISTIC
Jilly Ballistic might be MTA’s most wanted- she uses the subway as a canvas for her provocative artwork and has no plans to take her art above ground where there are far less cameras. Bold indeed. The gas masked figures she puts up commemorate the anniversary of WW1- it’s been 100 years now- and we are still warring with gas masks! Only now they are updated to protect soldiers from more lethal substances.

Jilly also challenges social norms as they intercept with modern technology. Her ‘error messages’ and ‘software updates’ are tailored to comment on specific adverts and they are equally funny and provocative - I can’t help but giggle every time. But they don’t last long. The G train may forever be running late, but the MTA is quick to take down her work (within hours of her placing them). So if you see one consider yourself lucky, like you’ve found a four leaf clover of spotted a shooting star.
JILLY BALISTIC
Strategically Placed We asked her to make us a piece that we all could use- yes that means you dear reader. In keeping with our philosophy - you are beautiful just the way you are...really! Each curve and laugh line (you earned those) should be celebrated. It’s ultimately a choice you make to feel beautiful or not. Why choose to feel anything less than perfect. ??Celebrate it.?? Cut out this piece and take a picture of yourself (or put it on a photo of a friend who needs reminding that yes, she’s perfect as she is) and hashtag ____. Let the revolution begin.

CINTHIA ROWLEY
I’m so honored to have Cynthia Rowley included in this issue. She has been a wardrobe staple since the the late 80s. I remember a brocade dress I owned of hers over a decade ago. It made me feel like a princess at a ball- it was hyper-feminine and precious, as were most of her pieces back then. You still see that femininity in her collections today, but lately there’s been a real daringness in her collections. She’s seems to have found her comfort zone creating those feminine pieces but now pairing them with unusual fabrics
and bold prints. I believe I wore her printed neoprene pants for the better part of last year- just the right amount of bold! I suspect she has drawn inspiration from her close ties with the fine art world. She’s a fixture in the New York downtown scene but you may also spot her biking around Montauk if she’s not there surfing in her colorfully self designed wet suits- oh and she’s a mom too. She really does it all. Here are some questions the foxes had for her:
