Guided by the Quaker belief
that there is a Divine Light in everyone, Brooklyn Friends School cultivates an intellectually ambitious and diverse community that celebrates each individual’s gifts. We challenge our students to value and embrace difference as they develop critical thinking skills and apply their knowledge and intelligence both in and out of the classroom. In this rich learning environment, we inspire all members of our community to voice their convictions, to discover and pursue their passions, and to seek truth. Our graduates are compassionate, curious, and confident global citizens who let their lives speak in the spirit of leadership and service.

A MESSAGE FROM
Dr. Larry Weiss Head of School
Over the past eight years, it has been my pleasure and privilege to help guide and lead Brooklyn Friends School to fulfill the extremely ambitious goals of our 2008 Strategic Plan. As a result we have grown by approximately 40% by increasing our average grade-level enrollments from 40 to 60. In order to accommodate this expansion, we have constructed a new Upper School facility, a new Family Center facility, and we have thoroughly renovated our Pearl Street main building. Our faculty and staff have increased more than 40% in size, and we have successfully implemented the International Baccalaureate curriculum in our Upper School. Moreover, we extended our outreach and impact into the public school sector through the Horizons at Brooklyn Friends enrichment program, which has reached full enrollment of 140 Kindergarten through Grade 8 students. The expansion required substantial increases in capital and annual fund raising as well as securing long-term debt at reasonable terms. These requirements have been met, and BFS is poised to focus on sustainability, continuous improvement of all-school curriculum and student services, and increased attention to the Quaker values and practices. I am thus very pleased that the BFS 2018-19 school year has begun with the announcement of “Community” as the Testimony of the Year. This initiative grew out of the formidable work of the BFS All-School Quaker Life Committee, which is led by Marna Herrity and Kenneth Alston and is composed of a dedicated group of teachers, staff members, and administrators. The Committee surveyed the school’s 200-plus faculty and staff to determine the 2018-19 testimony, and “Community” was the overwhelming choice.
2 BROOKLYN FRIENDS SCHOOL JOURNAL Summer 2018
Inclusion, equity, friendship, justice, beauty, and joy that animates our ongoing commitment to Quaker education remains as important today as it has ever been over the past 150 years.
Dr. Larry Weiss was a central part of all the school’s sesquicentennial celebrations, including the allschool photo on the steps of Borough Hall (with PAT co-president Eisa Ulen Richardson), Commencement for the Class of 2018 (with graduate Isabel Ullman), and many more.
As one of their first projects, Committee members brainstormed and agreed on a community-related word or phrase, along with a quotation, to be printed on every month of the school’s printed academic calendar. The chosen words are peaceful, reflective, embracing, open, integrity, diverse, nurturing, intentional, truth, loving kindness, and joy. In combination with the quotations and outstanding artwork of students, these words bring the calendar to life and will provide all of us with inspiration, encouragement, and expectation as we navigate the new school year together. The vision and practice of BFS, particularly as they are informed by Quakerism, were frequent and important subjects of reference during last year’s very successful Sesquicentennial celebrations. Over the past 150 years, what has it meant for BFS to be a Quaker school? Beyond the SPICES acronym (Simplicity, Peace, Integrity, Compassion, Equality, Stewardship), our learning community renewed a focus on the ways in which Quaker vision and practice inform what we are and will become as well as what we have been.
ongoing commitment to Quaker education remains as important today as it has ever been over the past 150 years. We, as members of the wider Brooklyn Friends learning community, all share the centrally important work of preparing our students for lifelong learning, knowing and speaking truth, and acting conscientiously to make a positive and meaningful difference in the world. I will always be most deeply grateful for the opportunity to work with and serve the students, faculty, staff, and parents of Brooklyn Friends. My 46-year career in secondary and undergraduate teaching and administration began at BFS in 1973, and 32 of those years will have involved work in Quaker schools and colleges by the time I retire in 2019. With your support, I look forward to the spirit of renewed commitment to the values and practices of the Religious Society of Friends in 2018-2019 and beyond. In friendship,
I firmly believe that the quest for truth, honesty, understanding, compassion, active and meaningful service to our wider community, inclusion, equity, friendship, justice, beauty, and joy that animates our

FOREVER FRIENDS The Class of 2018 by Joan Martin It’s been said about schools that heads of school may come and go, trustees may come and go, and teachers may come and go, but alumni are part of the school forever. Forty-two accomplished young men and women of the Class of 2018 joined that community of forever friends when they received their Brooklyn Friends School diplomas on June 12. Commencement exercises took place that evening at the Ethical Culture Society Concert Hall in New York, with the Board of Trustees’ co-chairs, Stephen Burwell and Edward Oliver, presiding. Head of School Larry Weiss and Peter Prince, Interim Upper

Friedman ’55, President Emeritus of Pace University, received the George Fox Award and spoke at the beginning of the ceremony. Student and faculty speakers Hasanti Kelly ’18, Joy Freund ’18, and Zenzile Keith were selected by the graduates, as is customary, to address the gathering. They spoke passionately about the difficulty of living in today’s society and they advocated that the graduates pursue futures as activists committed to social justice, antiracism, equity, and inclusion. The remarks also reflected the students’ experience of speaking truth to power and

Class of 2018 continued from page 5 holding BFS accountable to its mission statement. At the same time, as Zenzile observed, “I watched you support each other through some difficult times in a way that only people with strong bonds can do.” In between the commencement speeches, there were beautiful, uplifting musical performances by graduates Devante Dunbar ’18, Oliver Betz ’18, the Upper School a capella singers, and the Chamber Ensemble. Miranda Chang ’18 closed the ceremony with a personal reflection about the value and impact of Quaker Meeting for Worship. Among the graduates, 10 were recognized as “lifers” for having spent their entire educational careers as Brooklyn Friends School students, one of the highest percentages of lifers in recent history. Collectively and individually, members of the Class of 2018 have made significant contributions to the school community and have excelled in scholarship, the arts, athletics, social justice activism, and service. Every student took International Baccalaureate (IB) courses and completed the IB’s Creativity, Activity, Service component; 80 percent were part of the IB Diploma Program. Of note scholastically, Sophia Lipkin, earned a semi-finalist spot in the Presidential Scholars Program, one of the highest honors in the United States for high school seniors. Sophia will attend Johns Hopkins University in the fall. Aishat Adelkunle received a $40,000 per year Jack Kent Cooke Foundation scholarship for her studies at Yale. Anthony Hohn earned a Posse Scholarship covering full tuition for his studies at Vanderbilt University. For their ability to stay focused on challenging IB classes while having an impact on all areas of school life, senior faculty advisor Teresa Cano perhaps put it best in describing the Class of 2018: “I commend the class for showing the strength and the ability to get back up again and keep going. I thank them for bringing smiles and jokes to the classroom, creating the most pleasant academic environment. I’m especially grateful to those who showed continuous cooperation, enthusiasm, motivation, empathy, intellectual curiosity, and generosity.”

Beyond this fundraising achievement, the Gala was a joyous occasion that brought together our community of parents, alumni, faculty, staff, and friends for an evening of celebration and pride in our School. The Gala celebrations kicked off two weeks before the big night with an online auction. Featuring 70 items, the auction itself raised over $33,000 for financial aid at BFS and helped to build excitement for the main event. Then on Friday, May 11th, Brooklyn Friends took over the Brooklyn Museum. Almost 500 guests began the evening in the Glass Pavilion for mingling, food and drink. They then moved to the Beaux Art Court for dinner under a starry sky and an exciting program featuring a conversation with legendary documentary filmmaker Ken Burns and Head of School Dr. Larry Weiss. Guest viewed films about the history of BFS, and a “paddle raise” led by parent Sabrina LeBlanc brought in over $30,000 in less than 60 seconds. The night ended with a dance party in the museum’s beautiful lobby with late night food and drink, dancing to the music of DJ Pup Dawg and a one-of-a-kind photo experience

brought to us by Robert Johnson, BFS Class of 1971, and Jonsar Studios. The BFS at 150 Anniversary Gala was a night for our community and by our community. Remarks presented at the event by Seth Phillips ’81, Edward Oliver, Steven Burwell and Salomé Galib reinforced the special place BFS has in the lives of so many people. Our deepest thanks are extended to Gala Chairs Paula Dunbar and Hayden Dunbar, special guest Ken Burns, our Leadership Sponsors and Host Committee, the BFS at 150 Gala and Steering Committees, and Chris Concannon of Network Financial Printing for their support of the celebration. Brooklyn Friends School also thanks the generous donors to our online auction and those who bid in very big ways to support financial aid at BFS. Moreover, we thank all those who purchased tickets and supported this milestone celebration in myriad ways. ALUMNI WEEKEND
A BFS party isn’t a party until our vibrant alumni community shows up! In honor of our sesquicentennial, we hosted an Alumni Weekend, beginning with an Alumni listening session with the Board’s Strategic Planning Committee on Thursday, followed by Friday night’s 150th Anniversary Gala and concluding with our annual Alumni Day festivities on Saturday. And on Sunday? We rested.
2018
The listening session was attended by dedicated alums, who met with members of the Board of Trustees to exchange strategic ideas and suggestions for the future of BFS. The 150th Anniversary Gala on May 11 was a magical event that embodied the pride and prestige of being part of the Brooklyn Friends community. Thirty-five alumni representing a range of 60 years — from the Class of 1953 to 2013 — joined in the fun and reflected joyfully on their formative growingup years and their fond affection for the school.

After partying the night away Brooklyn black-tie style at the gala, our alums kept the celebration going the next morning for Alumni Day. Saturday’s events included the 50th reunion luncheon, the alwayspopular alumni basketball game, Meeting for Worship and tours of our campus, including a very special trip down memory lane to our original schoolhouse on Schermerhorn Street. We rounded out the day with a rooftop cocktail reception that was relocated to the upper gym due to inclement weather. Despite the rainy day, Alumni Day was a warm and friendly event that wrapped up a wonderful weekend in the life of BFS.

A Faculty Alum Four Times Over!
Many Thanks, Manny by Lekeia Varlack Judge ’99
– B E T H FA R B E R ’ 7 3
As we wrap up final days of our sesquicentennial school year, we emerge with a greater appreciation for our school’s history and traditions. Very few people in our community have been around to witness our history unravel longer than Manny Narvaez, Brooklyn Friends’ Facilities Manager, who is retiring after 49 years of hard work and dedication to our school – that’s equivalent to a student lifer four times over! And, to put it another way mathematically, Many was part of nearly one-third of our 150-year history. Manny was literally the man behind the scenes, making sure that all our systems ran without a hitch. His role is one that was easily taken for granted, until the moment a disruption occurred and we were quickly reminded of how our school couldn’t function without him. 4
‘‘
Through good times and bad times, Brooklyn Friends has supported me and has inspired me to become the best person I can be. Whether it was engaging in community service, learning and studying in classes, or participating in athletics, the students, the teachers, and staff have been inclusive, generous, and kind. – MILES NABRIT T ’17 8
This past school year, Manny announced his retirement. When the news spread to our alumni community via our alumni Facebook group, he received an outpouring of love and appreciation from former students, faculty and parents. Among the sea of well wishes, alum and former BFS Historian Susan Price ’86 wrote, “Love you, Manny, congrats! And thank you for everything you have done for our school, including so many years safeguarding the BFS archives, valuable artwork, and so much more.”
In addition to Manny’s retirement, there were several other farewells to long-term (10 years plus) BFS faculty and staff as we concluded 2017-18. Manny and Louise Colon relocated to Florida after 15 years of service to the school. The Middle School bid adieu to Maggie King (21 years), Ticia Vreeland (15 years), and Jeffrey Cox (14 years). In the Upper School, Blake Sills completed 10 years as science teacher and department chair, and Lower School teacher Peta-Gaye Grey moved on after more than 20 years at BFS. Very best wishes to all our BFS faculty alums!
Former Head of School Michael Nill added, “Congratulations and thank you for everything you have done and meant to the school. Enjoy the new chapter of life. Cheers.” Many more BFS trustees, parents, students and colleagues added to the chorus of appreciation and well wishes for this BFS living legend. It is easy to tell that Manny touched many of our lives and will be remembered fondly by our entire community, including generations of BFS students. So for now, we bid Manny a friendly farewell and hope that BFS will always have a place in his heart, like he has in ours. Summer 2018 BROOKLYN FRIENDS SCHOOL JOURNAL 17

welcomed some 200 special guests and shared their gratitude for the vital role that grandparents have in the school community and the lives of our students. Guests also enjoyed a viewing of our sesquicentennial history film “150 Years of Light”. They then rode the bronze-doored elevators to the 6th and 7th floors and joined their BFS students in their classrooms. Students gave tours of their classrooms, making special stops at their favorite spots and projects on display, interviewed their guests, and enjoyed singing, dancing and snack with their visitors. The morning was capped off with a viewing of the All School Art Show.

A REMARKABLE DAY PUTS BFS ON THE FRONT PAGE OF THE NEW YORK TIMES
Supporting the Student Movement Against Gun Violence Brooklyn Friends School’s participation in the National School Walkout on March 14 was notable not only for the important message that was sent by the protest, but by the chance encounter that some of our group had with a New York Times photographer covering the event. Many in the BFS contingent of 500 students and faculty were captured in a front-page photograph in The New York Times (above in the upper left quadrant). In addition, a journalist from WNYC-AM radio interviewed and followed our Upper Schoolers as they walked from Lawrence Street to Borough Hall, where thousands of students from local public and independent schools gathered. Younger students and families engaged in the March 14 protest as well, through a beautiful and moving Lower School Sing for Peace held for 2nd-4th graders and their parents.

As we conclude our Sesquicentennial celebrations, we thank and applaud everyone who supported the 20172018 Brooklyn Friends Fund and the BFS at 150 Anniversary Gala.
The BFS student body of 900 students has grown and thrived thanks to the collective efforts of our community members. We would like to especially recognize our Brooklyn Friends Fund volunteers and the Gala Committee volunteers who gave their all to make these milestones possible: We collectively raised $1.1 MILLION to support Brooklyn Friends School now and into the future.
We increased engagement and giving of faculty, alumni, grandparents and students with almost 1,000 donors to the Brooklyn Friends Fund.
We hosted the largest gala in BFS history at the world-class Brooklyn Museum.
