The mission of Brooklyn Pride, Inc. is to produce Pride and community events that commemorate, educate, promote and celebrate the spirit of the Stonewall Riots. This is a year round endeavor, culminating with an Annual 5K Run, Multicultural Festival; Parade and After-Pride Parties. A significant percentage of the net proceeds from these events are invested to support other organizations and events that celebrate the strength, diversity and reaffirm the value of all LGBT Brooklynites; groups and all others who support the struggle for equal rights. Brooklyn Pride is the premier LGBT community based-service organization in Brooklyn, serving the neighborhood communities, from Bath Beach to Wingate.

We extend our appreciation and gratitude to the entertainers, DJ volunteers, FrontRunners NY and our investors for their unwavering support, time, talent and energies to produce this year’s event. The Board of Directors also conveys its gratitude and appreciation to the residents, businesses, and elected officials, civic and volunteer organizations in Park Slope. We work hard to make you Proud to host our annual event. Brooklyn’s Annual Pride Celebration commemorates the spirit of the Stonewall riots and Builds a Bridge to Pride for Brooklynites in their own backyard. We strive to bring together the diverse com-

munity of Brooklyn through positive images of our own diverse community. We celebrate family, youth, and the talent of our community as well as the heart of our activist. We are you in our everyday lives. The 13th Annual Pride in Brooklyn celebrates Your Rights, Our Rights Human Rights here at home and internationally. As you peruse the pages of this year’s Pride Guide, note the businesses gay or straight owned, friends and sponsors who support our community, often in the face of opposition. District Attorney Hynes is a proud and life-long resident of Brooklyn, where he was born and raised in the Flatbush section. He met his wife, Patricia L. Pennisi, a registered nurse, while they were undergraduate students. He attended St. John's University while she was at Kings County Hospital. They were married in October of 1963. Throughout the years, he and Mrs. Hynes have remained professionally and personally loyal to Brooklyn where they chose to pursue their respective careers and raise five children. Today, the two enjoy the role of grandparents to sixteen grandchildren. As District Attorney, Mr. Hynes has pioneered many innovative criminal justice strategies. He started one of the first specialized domestic violence bureaus in the country and then worked with court administrators to establish one of the first domestic violence court parts in New York State. In March 2009, Kings County District Attorney Charles J. Hynes announced the indictment of Keith Phoenix, 28, and Hakim Scott, 25, in the murder of Ecuadorian immigrant José Sucuzhanay, whom

the defendants believed was homosexual. District Attorney Hynes was joined in the announcement, by New York City Council Speaker Christine C. Quinn, Councilwoman Diana Reyna, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz, First Deputy Commissioner of the New York State Division of Human Rights Luis Burgos, relatives of the victim, and members of Brooklyn’s LGBT and Hispanic communities. The top charge against Scott and Phoenix is Murder in the Second Degree as a Hate Crime, which carries a maximum sentence of 25 years to life in prison. The indictment charges that, at about 3:25 a.m., on Dec. 7, 2008, Sucuzhanay and his brother, Romel, were walking home in Bushwick, at the corner of Kossuth Place and Bushwick Avenue, when they walked past a car driven by Phoenix and in which Scott was a passenger. The defendants saw the Sucuzhanay brothers walking arm-in-arm, and mistook them for homosexuals. They then attacked the victims brandishing a glass bottle and a baseball bat. The defendants are also charged with shouting anti-

gay and anti-Hispanic insults prior to the attack. Romel was able to run to safety, but Jose was beaten repeatedly with a baseball bat, while he lay in the street. José Sucuzhanay suffered skull fractures and brain injuries, and he died a few days later. An indictment is an accusatory instrument and not proof

of a defendant’s guilt. The case is being prosecuted by Rackets Division Bureau Chief Patricia McNeill, Deputy Bureau Chief Josh Hanshaft and Assistant District Attorney Lauren Hersh. Charles Guria is Chief of the Civil Rights Bureau. Michael Vecchione is Chief of the Rackets Division.

Doreen DeJesus Being a part of the Board of Directors of Brooklyn Pride, is an honor and a privilege. I was born in Brooklyn but raised in Memphis,TN. I moved my family back to Brooklyn 17 years ago and have never looked back. I am the owner of Ambicionz a Virtual Enterprise. My specialty is working with coaches, entertainers, entrepreneurs, real estate professionals, speakers and writers. I take away their graphical, marketing and administrative tasks. The rest of my spare time is devoted to Brooklyn Pride and serving the LGBT community in every way possible. I have been on the Brooklyn Pride’s board since 2007 and continue to learn a lot from my fellow board members. I am very proud to be sitting on a board with individuals who know how to face a challenge

I would like to thank Carmen, my partner of 12 years for her understanding and for standing by me through all the emergency meetings and many events. Gina Osnovich is the editor of OUTBrooklyn, the gay lifestyle column at the Brooklyn Eagle family of papers. She lives on Long Island with her partner Robyn and her son, Quentin, 5. Gina also works in design and sales. She writes horror fiction in her spare time, and her anthology, Scars, received honorable mentions and accolades from various groups, and raised thousands of dollars for the American Red Cross. She was named a Brooklyn Woman History Maker in 2002 by the

Caribbean American Chamber of Commerce. She is writing her novel now and has every intention of making her first million from it, so that she can buy a house and work from home, finally. Robyn Ong grew up in Forest Hills, Queens, and now lives on Long Island with her partner Gina and her son. She is an account executive at Maxwell Plumb Mechanical Corp in Bayside, Queens. Robyn travels extensively for a column she and her partner write for OUTBrooklyn. She is working on expanding her family and has every intention of restoring classic cars when Gina makes that first million.

It rained on us towards the end but it never stopped us. We continued to have fun and made the best out of it. We actually donated our business last year "Just Me Productions Entertainment". "India" performed on stage and Kathy DJ’d helping the performers with their tracks.When the festival was over we knew it was not over with "Brooklyn Pride". We continued to stay in touch with the board members and became friends with them. It was like one big family.When it was time for the meetings to begin again we were there. Now Here We Are "Talent Committee". It wasn't hard finding talent being that's what we do on our own time. Finding the talent for our stage this year was fun and challenging. It gave us a chance to meet many

Love During the Golden Years Written by Denise Samen and Partner

After my accident in '81, I thought nobody could love anyone who was missing a limb, and all broken up, so I put myself into what I affectionately call my "cocoon" - and there I stayed for the next 25 yrs! One day, I saw a woman that changed my whole life. She wasn't exceptionally beautiful, nor was she even gay! But it hit me that I finally wanted to be happy. Oh, I was content, being a part of an organized church, but I wasn't happy. I needed more than the church could give me. So, I made a list of my goals to aim for, and except for losing 50 lbs, my quest is almost over. I had a lot of love to offer a woman, but just where would I find a gal my age? One of my friends g/f got me involved with the Web, and so I made out a few applications and "BINGO" I started hearing from "older" women. I even had the opportunity to actually meet some of these nice gals, and if nothing else, we became friends. Friends were good, but my heart ached for something deeper. Was I asking for too much at my age now, here I'm in my late 50's, could it happen? I was fortunate to have met 2 very nice woman, unfortunately, they were both "butches" One was a soft and the other a tweener. Now back in my day, we didn't have such names, you were either butch or femme, and being an old fashioned butch, I was interested in attracting a femme. Circumstances lead to my backing away graciously from the situation. My quest continued, until I heard from HER. I explained my situation to her, thinking that we'd just be friends. But the more we talked, the more similarities started to click. I have an eye fetish, and she had the prettiest blue eyes, that ran down to her soul, which was as pure as the driven snow. We finally met, but I was struck with monumental shyness. I tried to make advances, and god knows she tried to stimulate my interests. But neither one of us wanted to get hurt, so we decided to take things really slow. However, she was in my mind constantly and just talking and writing didn't fill that gap completely, so we took another stab at taking the next step. Now, we're both in our 60's and one would think that we're over the hill. What hill, I didn't see a stinking hill? But we have scaled the peak of happiness from the valley of loneliness and despair. The future looks bright, happy and definitely gay now, for both of us. Wow, if this is what the 60's are all about...I can't wait to reach 70 or better, and with her by my side, it can only get better.

Eventually she realized that the two women she had been corresponding with were leading nowhere. One day she wrote me and told me she had dreamed about me the night before and told me what she had dreamed, a perfectly innocent dream no romance or sex involved. She soon told me that she thought about me constantly and that she thought she loved me.To say the least I was skeptical saying that was not possible we had never even met I could be a liar. But the more we talked the more we knew we were right for each other. We determined we were not going to move too quickly and take a chance on ruining what we had. I had suggested I drive to Brooklyn in October and she agreed then in September I was planning on driving to Indiana to visit with my granddaughter before she went back to college and had a brainstorm? I decided I was over 170 miles closer to Brooklyn if I left from Indiana so I called Denise and asked what she thought of me coming in September instead of October need I tell you what she replied. We both had some physical flaws which we were apprehensive about the other seeing but, they turned out to be minor to the other person. When we met it was instant rapport it was as though we had known each other for years and people who see us together think we have known each other for years we are so comfortable with each other like a pair of gloves we just match. Don't get me wrong we have plenty of differences from tastes in food (I live in a hick town in the Midwest where farming is a big industry and I guess my tastes could be described as pedestrian) to her liking open mike (if I did that I would probably get physically ill) but, in the things that are important from being monogamous to what makes a relationship work we agree. Our living together will not happen overnight but, we are willing to wait as long as it takes and for most months will have to live on phone calls. But when it does happen it will all be the sweeter. I guess what I am saying love does happen to people in their later years (we're both in our 60's) and it is all the more precious and sweet because you had to wait so long for it to happen. Never give up the one you love could be just around the corner.

The Other Side of the Love Story

Before I met Denise on the Internet I had been married for 42 years and a widow for 4. I guess I had been relatively happy, but had always felt something was missing. I finally got brave enough to admit to myself what was missing and joined a few dating sites. I was surfing through this site for lesbians only when I saw her picture, it jumped out at me and I just had to write her. I found out she was contacting two other women (one couldn't spell computer much less use one). The other woman kept telling Denise she was coming to Brooklyn to be with her, the plan being she would move in with Denise until she could find a

Center For Anti-Violence Education

ounded in 1974, CAE teaches practical strategies to cope with intimate partner violence, hate/bias crimes, abuse, and harassment. We empower LGBT individuals, adult and teen women, children, and other communities especially affected by violence to heal from, prevent, and respond to violence. As one participant recently shared, CAE “restore[s] to survivors something that is often lacking in other forums—a connection between mind, body, and spirit that was severed for most people when they were assaulted.” CAE participants learn in-depth verbal and physical self-defense strategies that give them a range of responses to cope with harassment, increasing their confidence when faced with violent or potentially violent situations. Participants find their inner strength and practice speaking up for themselves and others. They develop self-esteem, build community, and learn ways to get support. Our course also enables survivors of violence to break through the shame and fear that often immobilizes them. From the beginning, CAE has had deep roots in the LGBT community and in LGBT activism. In the 1980s,

CAE was the first organization to provide self-defense programs for transpeople. Also at that time, in partnership with the New York City Gay and Lesbian Anti-Violence Project (AVP), CAE was the first organization to provide violence prevention and self-defense training for people living with HIV/AIDS. We continue to be on the forefront of services for the LGBT community and are proud of our increasing prominence as a youth service provider. Our classes provide a safe, nurturing space for young people who identify as LGBT or who are questioning/ exploring their sexual orientation and gender identity and/ or presentation. In addition, we focus on those most in need, including homeless youth and trans individuals. A young woman who came outwhile at CAE said, “CAE has been one of the few major support centers in my life as a lesbian. CAE is like a gate opener, it leads you into discovering the different aspects of yourself by teaching that you don’t have to figure everything out, but just keep learning…I feel proud to see CAE's community standing up and working together to end discrimination. ”

KRAVe BOOGIE's style is aggressive, detailed, and designed to entertain. Dred

A gender bending extravaganza by world renown actress/drag KING DRED. Dred is one of the most sought after artists when it comes to gender bending acts. Dred uses spoken word, monologues, and characterizations such as P. Dddy and Shaft in her one woMa show. Through her performances she draws attention to how society domesticates us into our preconceived notions of sexuality, race, and gender. Her life, humanity, and spirituality, brings us a bit closer to recognizing and unlearning constraints, prejudices and stereotypes. The smooth-headed, internationally known Haitian-American, multi-spirited performance-artist, and gender-illusioning woman, Dred has been seen on HBO, MTV, Oxygen and one of the stars of the award-winning film "Venus Boyz." Using theatre, dance, humor, and cultural history, Dred plays with gender roles and social/racial stereotypes to inspire all audiences to think about race, gender, identites. Her shows are not just about imitating the "opposite" sex, they are about freedom of self-expression and crossing/breaking boundaries. She inspires people to honor and accept the differences in their selves, and each other. Dred's performance has been written about in books including The Drag King Book and Female Masculinity, and also has been published in the anthology Cast Out: Queer Lives in Theater.

We all need a unique way to pour from our heart those things that are heavy on our mind, whether it's a blog, a video, a Hallmark card, or maybe this time, a Dy'Ari. Like it sounds, this Dy'Ari is a vault of stories, dreams, visions, and aspirations balanced with heartache, disappointment, pain, all intertwined with the strength of heart to rise above adversity. Every chapter, every page, every story, every lesson strikes a chord with this musical artist. Producers Miykal Snoddy (Mary J. Home sweet home, where the music always lingered in the air. If it wasn't my parents entertaining us with their old Sicilian songs, it was my older brothers and their band either in the basement or in the garage playing their punk metal music. It took me in, and it will remain in my veins. My brothers played the guitar, bass, drums, and piano, and even as a child, I was twirling around making up my own songs. I would bring my composition notebook with me everywhere and just write… sit on the amp and sing the words on my page to my brother. I was the little girl with the DJ headphones on her head. I never thought of it professionally, but thought of it as a passion... Passion and creativity are what make me me. Having worked at Arista Records for several years, I had the opportunity to meet many artists and to see what goes on behind the scenes. Seeing many of these artists perform made me really

realize that this is what I wanted to do. And now, when I put the headset on, the mic stands before me and reaches deep into my soul, grabbing the moment within me and taking my voice. It is the most fulfilling and happiest feeling I know. It brings me to my own place and embraces my soul. Every time I write and sing a song, I get inspired to create another. I have had the opportunity to work with three people who are very passionate about music. Lisa Nicole, and Pisidia and DJ Xtreame from 'Destination X'. Together we created magic on our first project - "Alive", which was released by RexHouse Music and hit #10 on the Hot Dance Club Billboard Charts, along with several other remixes by other producers including Tim Rex himself. If it wasn’t for Tim Rex discovering me, I would not be where I am today. A follow-up of “Beautiful” was created and now is in the works of promotion. I am honored to be be performing at Brooklyn Pride 2009…word is… more creativity is in the air!

Openly out recording artist Josh Zuckerman is not your typical rock star. While exemplifying the perfect star quality, he continues to carry a message about being true to one's self. He has released two CDs (Out From Under, A Totally New Sensation) to great reviews. His latest CD Got Love? will be released in July 2009. Having toured more than 20 different countries including the United States, Bermuda, Germany, France, Belgium, Sweden, Norway, Japan, as well as Thailand, Josh continues to spread his music across the globe. Josh is a regular on Atlantis Cruise Lines performing for gay men across the world. He has also performed at over 50 pride festivals across the US. Over the last 5 years Kraven Seneca: Dance Company has cemented a reputation of dance performance excellence. Lauren Ianuzzi ain't just a pintsized Jersey girl with thick brown curls, a pearly-white smile and sparkling enthusiasm. She ain't girlie girl vanilla either.The Bergen County-bred songstress boasts a hustler-like spirit with the vocal chops to match, and there's no mistaking her tenacity as she madly croons, "I will turn up the heat" in the sultry funk flavors of "Sweat," one of the many self-penned tunes by the twenty-twoyear-old Ianuzzi. She's been tellin' it like it is for a long time now. It's now the world's turn to catch up and turn an ear. Robert Anton

Robert Anton is a singer/songwriter/actor and has been “singing since he was a thought”, or so his grandmother would tell you; and she should know. He grew up singing with choirs, quartets, and soloists at the pentecostal church where his grandma was the pastor. Not only did this instill in him a deep spiritual love of music and performing, it also gave him the courage to find his true calling at an early age. By the time Robert was a pre-teen, he knew he wanted to sing for his supper. Consequently he went on to study music at the Cleveland School of Arts and Baldwin-Wallace College; then he moved to Chicago and finally New York City to pursue his dream. Once in New York, Robert quickly began performing in any venue available and landed his first big tour doing his favorite show, “Dreamgirls” with Miki Howard and other noted performers. Since then he has toured and performed in over 10 countries and 150 cities in various shows and with headlining performers like Miki, Vanessa Bell-Armstrong, Altrina Grayson, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Corey Reynolds, Lisa Nicole-Carson, and more. Robert was also seen as a finalist on ‘It’s Showtime At the Apollo’ with Steve Harvey. Currently Robert is promoting and celebrating his own releases through his company, playAnton productions. No stranger to broadening his horizons, Stefon moved on to clubs in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Florida, Atlanta and Virginia where he delighted gay and straight audiences alike. Stefon has also been a fierce competitor in the highly competitive ballroom and pageant scene. He currently walks Butch Body and Sex Siren for the House of Legacy International. His pageant conquests include being the reigning Mr. Hampton Roads Nubian King for Virginia as well as the emeritus for the Mr. Bold and Beautiful International Studd Pageant in New Orleans and the Mr. Illusions New Jersey International Male Pageant. Stefon thoroughly enjoys what he does and can be seen in a New York Film Academy documentary entitled “Fake It until You Make It” and in an soon to be released book by Jeanetta Baines which features the top 100 drag kings and queens across America aptly titled “ We Will Always Be Our Mother and Father’s Children”. Vera Wylde

Vera Wylde grew up in Vermont and came into her own in her college years. She got her start on the stage in Boston on a whim and a little luck. Since moving to New York Vera has performed all around the city in Manhattan and Brooklyn in all manner of variety, drag and burlesque shows. She has strived to carve her own niche in the drag world infusing rock and roll energy and aspects of traditional burlesque into her performances. Vera has been fortunate enough to be surrounded by accepting and supportive people throughout her journey and she does what she can to see that others find similar acceptance whenever possible. She's currently a queen amongst kings as the sole drag queen member of Brooklyn's own Switch N Play. Vera also produces and hosts Drags and Dolls Burlesque which after a hiatus is returning at The City as Broadway Comedy Club starting July 12th and continuing through the 2nd Sunday of each month for as long as the venue will put up with her.

Front Runners has been an active running and cycling club for gays, lesbians, and LGBTfriendly athletes for 30 years. We are affiliated with New York Road Runners and run as a club in the many races sponsored by NYRR throughout the five boroughs. Additionally, many of our members are active triathletes and cyclists who participate in triathlons and duathlons throughout the metro area and across the country.
