Bears

Grizzly bears

Grizzly bears (also known as brown bears) are large, powerful bears with distinctive humps on their shoulders. They have a “dished” face and long, curved claws. Often associated with mountainous regions, these powerful predators live solitary lifestyles and are skilled at digging for roots, tubers, and hunting. Grizzlies are found in various ecosystems, including mountains, forests, and tundra.

Black bears

Black bears are generally smaller than grizzlies, with a straight face profile and shorter, more curved claws. They come in a range of colours, from black to brown, cinnamon, or even white. These versatile bears are omnivores and have a diverse diet that includes berries, nuts, insects, and small mammals. They are excellent climbers and are known for their ability to adapt to various ecosystems.

Polar bears

Polar bears are the largest land carnivores on Earth and are adapted to life in the Arctic. They have white fur, large paws for swimming, and a streamlined body shape. They are superb swimmers and are extremely well adapted to hunting seals on sea ice. They have a layer of blubber for insulation and rely on sea ice for travel, hunting, and denning.

Know before you go

When is the best time to go?

The season stretches from the end of April to the beginning of October. The beginning and the end of the season can be a good bit colder as Canada comes out of, or goes into, winter. For example, some lakes can still be frozen until mid-June so you might not see the mesmerising turquoise colour you’ve perhaps spotted in pictures.

By the middle of the season it can be beautifully warm, even at higher altitudes. Wildlife also comes out to play with the rising temperatures. As spring turns into summer, we start to see animals become more active as they align themselves with the new growth of their surrounding areas. This activity and heat grows, then peaks in July and August, and by the end of August you’ll see a flurry of activity, including bears hunting salmon by the rivers – bear lodges are at their busiest at this time! That said, wildlife can be seen throughout the season with small bears, wolves, elk, and whales still being active with the thaw. Coupled with this, at the earlier part of the season, the Rocky Mountains can look particularly lovely with their snow-capped peaks adding to the dramatic scenery.

The winter activity and ski season generally runs from mid-December to March, and at times into April.

So, finding the ‘best’ time to go will coincide with your budget, comfort level, availability, and interests.

What should I pack?

We recommend packing layers as the weather is always changing in Canada. In the mountains you might find it to be cooler in the morning and evenings compared to the middle of the day. We also recommend having a comfortable pair of shoes if joining in any excursions and a raincoat for any uncertain weather.

Do I require a visa to visit Canada?

UK citizens/passport holders do not require a visa to visit Canada, however they are required to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) before flying to Canada.

If you are on an Alaska cruise you will also need to obtain a USA ESTA.

Can I pre-book my flight seats?

With most airlines you can pre-book your seats once the balance has been paid, this is usually at an additional cost. Alternatively, seat selection is complimentary at check in (typically 24 hours prior to departure).

What is my baggage allowance?

Please check with your specific airline however as a guide you can expect to have 23kg checked baggage per person on an economy flight. Premium Economy, Business and First Class will have a higher allowance.

Are Canada holidays suitable for children?

Absolutely! We think Canada is the perfect destination for a family holiday. Whether your kids are mountain biking or skiing in Whistler, spotting bears at a bear lodge, or exploring Quebec in a motorhome with you, they are sure to love every minute of their Canadian adventure. Speak to your Travel Expert who can offer the best advice on how to plan your family trip.

Driving

In Canada they drive on the opposite side of the road from the UK, on the right hand side. You will require a valid UK driving licence, and it is your own responsibility to following local road laws.

On a self-drive or motorhome itinerary you will require a National Parks Pass to drive through national parks.

Currency

Canada uses the Canadian Dollar.

Tipping

Tipping is not mandatory but generally expected. In most cases, a tip in the range of 15% to 20% is perfectly acceptable.

Temperatures (ºC)

Voltage

The standard voltage in Canada is 110–120v. European/UK plugs are not compatible with Canadian electrical sockets, therefore to plug in your electric appliances, you will need a plug adapter or a converter. In general, an adapter is all you need for non-motorised appliances, for example, camera chargers, phone chargers, laptops, etc. However a converter is necessary if you intend to use appliances with a motor, such as a hairdryer or an electric razor. Note that a converter can also be used as an adapter; there is no need to buy both.
