APRIL 2021
#BrookwoodStrong It’s hard to believe we are already in the month of April and beginning the 4th Quarter – it is great to see the days getting longer and brighter! This month, we continue to welcome students back into the building. We have had a successful transition for students that have returned to our in person learning model on March 16th. For families who are staying remote, it is wonderful to see your students engaging with their classmates in their Google Meet sessions. Please remember to reach out to us if you need to pick up materials or have any technology issues or questions. We are here for each of you. Later this month, we will be having onsite Spring pictures for our 7th graders on April 28th and Graduation pictures for our 8th graders on May 4th! We are right in the middle of a very busy time of year. We have much to celebrate, and much more to prepare for. Please take some time to review the items below… and thank you in advance for your support and as always, thank you for helping to create a school community that supports all of our students. By working together, we can ensure our students will continue to reach new heights in their education. If your child needs an electronic device, any materials/supplies, or if you have any questions or concerns, I can be reached at the school number (708) 758-5252, by email jlarson@brookwood167.org or by cell phone, (708) 362-0115. f

Medicine At School Please be sure that if your child needs to take any medication during the school day, they are not simply selfadministering. Those meds should be controlled by the school nurse and administered in the nurse’s office, even if they are in the habit of self-administering at home. This guidance is a part of District167’s Board Policy. If you have any questions about how to handle the administration of medicine at school, please contact our school nurse, Ms. Owens at towens@brookwood167.org. Thank you for your assistance in this matter of safety.

Author Virtually Visits | Brookwood Jr. High School On March 22, 2021 the 8th grade Honors ELA class had the pleasure of having guest speaker Christie Sever join our Google Meet. Christie is an author who writes children’s novels that focus on monumental moments in history throughout the world. In her stories, two children time travel to different historical time periods where they are immersed in the events of said time. During her time with our students, our class discussed her novel “The Magic March.” In this novel, two children travel to the 1970’s of South Africa, during aparthide.
Our students were lucky enough to have Mrs.Sever read the first chapter of the book. While reading, the students were asked to visualize what they were hearing. After this was over, the students then drew out some of their visualizations.

Author Virtually Visits | Brookwood Jr. High School After sharing their drawings, the class continued with a brief discussion on what aparthide is that was followed by an informative PowerPoint. This allowed the students to see pictures of a new topic to them for better understanding of what they were learning about.
To conclude our class discussion, students were able to give suggestions of book topics they would like to see in the future. Some ideas included South Korea in today’s climate, the revolutionary war from the United Kingdom’s side, the revolutionary war period, and Japan during the jurassic period! I believe that this opportunity allowed our students to learn more about a new topic while being engaged and having a chance to come up with their own great ideas! We were very lucky to have Christie Sever visit our classroom online with us and share her stories! Our school district also purchased ten (10) of Ms. Server’s books to add to our school’s library!
