FEBRUARY 2021

#BrookwoodStrong As we begin the 3rd quarter, we cannot stress enough the importance of student engagement in both synchronous and asynchronous learning. Parents, please be sure to frequently check your child’s progress by logging on to Power School and reaching out to their teachers. We are all here to help and we want your child to be successful. At this time, we are happy to announce that we will hopefully be returning back to in-person learning, provided health conditions allow, on Tuesday, February 23rd. Parents have the option to send their child(ren) back to school for full-time instruction or they can choose to have them continue the remote learning model for the remainder of the school year. We want to remind you that our enrollment form is posted on our school website and a hard copy is also attached to this newsletter. We ask that all parents complete the enrollment form if you haven’t already done so by Thursday, February 4th, so we can move forward in our planning process. In order to ensure the safety of students and staff, we ask that students and parents view the “Welcome Back to In Person Learning Expectations” video that will be posted on our Website. This video includes safety procedures and protocols that all students and staff will be following onsite. Safety is our top priority!

February is Black History Month it’s a great opportunity for us to teach students with intention, honoring the tradition and showing students its importance, along with the importance of Black history and culture. This year’s theme is The Black Family: Representation, Identity, and Diversity. Now more than ever, it is important to uphold this tradition and celebrate Black History. I want to thank all of our parents and students that participated in our remote winter Parent Teacher Conferences, we had a great turnout. We appreciate your continued involvement and support. It is important to stay connected and it is a great opportunity to discuss your child’s progress and discuss their strengths and areas for improvement. If your child needs an electronic device, or if you have any questions or concerns, I can be reached at the school number (708) 758-5252, by email jlarson@brookwood167.org or by cell phone, (708) 362-0115.

Sincerely, Jill Larson, Principal

Virtual Family Reading Night Brookwood Junior High School’s Virtual Family Reading Night was held on Wednesday, January 20th from 6:00-7:00 p.m. A Google Classroom was created and a link was posted for students and their families to join. When families logged on at 6:00 p.m., administrators and staff greeted them and explained they would be participating in a Reader’s Theater, The Mystery of the Stolen Laptop. After a quick review of the meaning and purpose of a Reader’s Theater, parts were distributed to students, family members and staff. At the conclusion of the Reader’s Theater the families participated in a Kahoot trivia game. Three (3) Reading games were raffled off during the night. Reading resources were included on the Google Classroom for families to continue to use after the event ended. All participants had a great time. Our goal is to continue to have one (1) Virtual Family Reading and Math Night a month.
